Abstract:
This study examines the film adaptations of six English novels; Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Tess, Jude, A Room with a View and A Passage to India. Through textual analysis of both the films and the original novels it demonstrates that many of the changes which occur in the transition between media are explicable in terms of differences between film and literary genres. Most previous writing on adaptation has tended to explain such changes as a consequence of film and literature having different signifying or expressive capacities. This thesis is a study of the representation of class in English film culture which focuses primarily on films and written texts produced between 1978 and 2002. My approach to these representations takes the work of Ellen Meiksins Wood on the theoretical principles of historical materialism as its most general methodological guide. Thus, I seek to place representations of class within a conceptual framework which, like the one found in Wood's work, puts emphasis on approaching class as a relational and conflictual social phenomenon lying at the heart of capitalist society. Abstract:
This MA thesis seeks to apply Henri Bergson’s theory of time to a reading of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” and David Fincher’s film adaptation of the text, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. By applying Bergson’s notions of durée and simultaneity, timeless moments will be seen to emerge in the text and the film. I place Fitzgerald’s text in context with other seminal modernist works in order to provide a study of the importance of the story within its time period. Through Deleuze’s application of Bergson to cinema, I analyze the evolution of the time-image with

Abstract:
By using adaptation theory and Linda Hutcheon’s depiction of adapters in the process of adaptation as “first interpreters and then creators” (18), this article argues how the original Sherlock Holmes illustrations, penciled most notably by Sidney Paget, are both a canonical element of the Holmes legacy and themselves an adaptation. This creates a means of exploring why and how the television show Sherlock Holmes (1984-1994), developed by Granada Television, uses the original Holmes illustrations as a source of adaptation to create the appearance of fidelity to Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Hol

Abstract:
Filmmakers have had four main difficulties adapting The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn to film: point of view, structure, audience and the novel's ending. By studying the different approaches of various directors to each obstacle, certain facts emerge about both the films and the novel. While literary scholars have studied Huck from practically every angle, none have sufficiently viewed the book through the lens of adaptation, despite the fact that it has been adapted to film and television over twenty times. The few critics who have studied the adaptations have done so using dated methodologi

"Zombie enterprises" usually refers to those companies that are in financial crisis but rely on the help of creditors to survive. At present, the problem of "zombie enterprises" in China is increasingly prominent and has serious consequences. Despite a remarkable economic achievement, development in China’s financial system has lagged behind: the system lacks diversity, since resources are concentrated in a small number of state-owned banks, with heavy regulation and political influence on state-owned banks which have led to a bias in credit allocation towards state-owned enterprises and priva
