The paper examines the use of the modal verb SHALL in the if clauses of conditionals found in legal English. The study traces the history of such usages and compares them to two uses of WILL attested in the same grammatical environment: a temporal use and a nonepistemic modal use. Abstract:
This chapter begins with a discussion of Kripke-style possible worlds semantics. It considers one of the most important applications of possible worlds semantics, the account of counterfactual conditionals given in Robert Stalnaker and David Lewis. It then goes on to examine the work of Richard Montague. Montague specified syntactic rules that generate English, or English-like, structures directly, while pairing each such rule with a truth-theoretic rule interpreting it. This close parallel between syntax and semantics is what makes the languages of classical logic so transparently tractable, and what they were designed to embody. Montague's bold contention is that we do not have to replace natural language natural languages with formal substitutes to achieve such transparency. The same techniques employed to create formal languages can be used to describe natural languages in mathematically revealing ways.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter begins by describing the decline of English teaching in China. Although English is still the most popular foreign language for students taking the National College Entrance Examination (NCEE), the state has lately begun to expand the number of options available, including Japanese, German, and Spanish, particularly as those relate to expanding trade and global soft power. These indicators may presage a transformation of the English language industry in Shenyang to come, but it is important to appreciate the difference between the marketplace for language instruction and the more cultural dimensions of linguistic desire that this book discusses. A change in the economics of language schooling is an inevitable consequence of a maturing market. Similarly, the relatively minor reduction of English's weighting on university entrance exams underscores changes to the underlying ideology of education, but does not necessarily herald the doom of foreign languages in China or the elimination of English's linguistic capital. Nevertheless, the chapter surveys the ground traveled in this ethnography and highlights some of the issues brought to the fore. There is much still that could be said about language, education, and modernization in China, and the chapter points the way forward to further research on these topics.

This chapter assesses the commerce of foreign languages in contemporary Shenyang. It focuses on the production of language as a commodity, the means by which certain forms of language are imbued with social value through the practices of marketing them to consumers. In the scramble to develop Shenyang's foreign language marketplace, school owners developed innovative strategies to build and maintain their businesses, strategies that themselves were crucial in reconfiguring the nature of language itself from something that is learned to something that is sold. The commodity logic of English extends far beyond their reach through uptake into almost all aspects of foreign language use in China, from public schools to testing to corporate management of linguistic (human) resources. It is no longer a stretch to say that English speakers in China are manufactured in much the same way as the vast number of goods bound from Chinese factories to Western marketplaces.

Abstract:
This introductory chapter provides a brief history of the English language in China. At the end of the 1970s, as China was emerging from the political maelstrom of the Cultural Revolution, English was spoken by only a relative handful of academics, foreigners, translators, and interpreters. English became a required subject when university entrance examinations were reinstated in 1978, and foreign language education began to take off again in the early 1980s at the beginning of the “reform and opening up” (gaige kaifang) period, a time when the socialist ethos of state, economy, and society was gradually dismantled in favor of a model of explosive economic growth and private individualism. Ultimately, the prominence of English in China today is the result of historical relations of colonialism and power that forged its global presence and the hierarchical ordering of linguistic inequality. The chapter then presents an overview of contemporary speech practices and English language learning in the northeastern Chinese city of Shenyang. It also considers two of the concepts that Russian literary theorist Mikhail Bakhtin pioneered: heteroglossia and the chronotope.

This chapter discusses how the Chinese landscape is defined by its walls and, consequently, by an architecture of enclosure. Clearly demarcated walled spaces, each one nested inside another, provide order as they structure and arrange the landscape into conceptual units of social space. The chapter then looks at how space, time, and language interact within the discursive formation of Chinese modernity. Language inhabits a spatiotemporal geography in Shenyang, with words and accents indexing each person's location within this environment both physically (where they are from) and temporally (how they are oriented in terms of being “ahead” or “behind” others). Modern languages belong in modern spaces, while antiquated ones belong in antiquated spaces. Thus, Dongbeihua is properly thought to be a language spoken in the countryside, or by the poor and elderly residents of Shenyang's older neighborhoods. For those who can speak standard Mandarin, Dongbeihua belongs in private domestic spaces, signifying close social relations among family. English, in contrast, is a language expressed, both verbally and graphically, in popular shopping districts and corporate enterprises.

This chapter studies the category of language popularly known as “Chinglish” and what this stigmatizing label means for the speakers to whom it is attached. For individuals to discover that their speech or writing was in actuality Chinglish was perhaps the most discomfiting news a Chinese English speaker could hear, implying as it did that the language in use was not only semantically or syntactically wrong but, more importantly, that the speaker's status as an authorized user of the English language was illegitimate and false. Chinglish is formed through the process of enregisterment, where discursive practices encode and systematize the evaluative judgments of entire speech communities, and then sediment over time into particular semiotic registers imbued with social value and identified with distinct social types. The metapragmatic statements that shape the perceptions of Chinglish may be explicit but are more generally embedded within other speech genres such as jokes. Ultimately, membership in the stigmatized speech community of Chinglish users is not claimed by intentional use of the variety but instead assigned by others, reflecting and maintaining existing inequalities in linguistic capital.

The behaviour of compounds in language contact situations is examined here through the consideration of case studies involving the influence of Greek on English, of Western European languages, especially English, on Russian, of Western European languages, especially French, on Greek, and of French on English. It is shown that in the borrowing of compounds and compounding structures, languages seem not to engage in adaptation to native language patterns, and that once a new structure enters a language via borrowing it takes on a life of its own, so to speak, and can assume forms that are quite different from their form in the source language. The question of simplification versus complexification under conditions of language contact is also treated against the backdrop of compounds and contact.

In this study, a computer program is developed to calculate characteristics of a Chevron type gasketed plate heat exchanger (CTGPHEX) such as: the number of plates, the effective surface area and total pressure drops. The main reason to prefer the use of CTGPHEXs to other various types of heat exchangers is that the heat transfer efficiency is much higher in comparison.
