Full textIdioms are found in every language and learning them is an important aspect of the mastery of a language. The English language is no exception as it contains a large number of idioms, which are extensively used. However, because of their rather rigid structure and quite unpredictable meaning, idioms are often considered difficult to learn. Although little research has been done to date on the nature of idioms as well as how they are used, a better understanding of variations in idioms can nevertheless be acquired by looking at some theories and thoughts about their use and their structure.
The aim of this paper is to examine a number of animal idioms, focusing primarily on English idioms and the similarities and differences found in equivalent Swedish idioms, even when the Swedish idioms do not contain an animal. Two types of studies are presented. In the first one, the English and Swedish animal idioms collected are grouped into four categories. The results of such a categorization show that half of the English animal idioms found have an equivalent in Swedish containing an animal. In the second study, the content, structure, wording, semantics and metaphorical meaning of the animal idioms are analysed and compared. The results indicate that the Swedish animal idioms that correspond to the English animal idioms have, for the most part, the same structures and similar variations in degree of literalness, fixity, manipulation and transformation. Furthermore, the use of metaphor, personification and simile appears to be common both in English and Swedish animal idioms. The role of context and literal and figurative translation are also addressed in this study.

Full textLanguage-play can briefly be described as the wilful manipulation of the peculiarities of a linguistic system in a way that draws attention to these peculiarities themselves, thereby causing a communicative and cognitive effect that goes beyond the conveyance of propositional meaning. Among the various phenomena answering this description are the different kinds of puns, but also more strictly form-based manipulations such as rhymes and alliteration, in addition to a host of other, sometimes even fuzzier, subcategories.
Due to its unusual nature, and especially its frequently strong dependence on the idiosyncrasies of a particular language, language-play can generally be assumed to constitute a significant challenge in a translation context. Furthermore, given its non-negligible effects, the translator is not free to simply ignore the language-play (provided it has been recognized as such in the first place) without having taken an active stance on its treatment. However, the difficulties in finding a suitable target-language solution are possibly exacerbated if the source text is a complex multimedia product such as a film, the translation of which, normally in the form of dubbing or subtitling, is subject to additional constraints.
In view of these intricacies, it has been the aim of this study to analyze and measure how language-play in film has actually been treated in authentic dubbing and subtitle versions. As a prerequisite, the concept of language-play has been elaborated on, and more than a dozen subcategories have been described, developed, and employed. For the purpose of carrying out a meaningful analysis of the dubbing and subtitling of language-play, a corpus has been compiled, comprising 18 family films and 99 of their various target versions, most on DVD, and yielding nearly 800 source-text instances of language-play and thousands of translation solutions.
The results indicate that especially two sets of factors, among the many that are likely to influence a translation, play a prominent role: the type of the language-play, and the identity and working conditions of the translator. By contrast, the mode of translation (dubbing vs. subtitling), the target language, or the general properties of the films, could not be shown to have a sizeable impact.

Abstract: Our purpose in this study is to analyze and understand things that occur in English language teaching / learning process in the space of language schools and the relationships that occur in this space from a discursive, and therefore historical, perspective. More specifically, we investigated discursive aspects in speeches produced by two language schools, which represent, in our view, much of the history of teaching / learning foreign languages in Brazil. In order to do so, we separated our corpus into two groups. On one hand, texts produced by the schools in order to celebrate each school foundation and, on the other hand, the discursive corpus consisted of advertising of these schools, so that we could monitor how these institutions have spoken about themselves over the years and offered their services to brazilian learners. With the development of our analysis, we see that throughout its history, the schools we chose tried to build, through their advertisements, a network in which the discursive meanings produced on the teaching / learning of English language meant students, teachers and two of the environments where teaching / learning of languages can take place: the language schools and the regular schools. These meanings produce a game between what is said and what is not said establishing power relations among and between the environment (s) language (s) mentioned. While the regular school are able to offer only what can be called bad English, the language school are available to meet the demands offering good English, completing the subject with what he feels like he does not have. And what will, according to market laws, guarantee the success. These meanings seem to work in the erasure of other possible ways for those involved in the process of teaching / learning, leaving the subject (almost) without options.

Full textThe Languages without Borders (LwB) Program promotes actions for the teaching and learning of languages in order to strengthen the internationalization of universities and the development of language teachers, since the very undergraduate students are responsible for teaching the classes. The Language Centers (LC) organize weekly pedagogical-administrative meetings, i.e., formal, or institutionalized, moments to discuss bureaucratic issues about the Program, and, above all, to promote learning, questioning and reflection on their own teacher education itself. In this context, this study aims to describe and analyze the teacher education program for teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP) experienced by the student teachers in the context of a LC of the LwB Program in a Brazilian public university. The theoretical framework is related to an organic teacher education process, one that occurs within the profession, in a reflective and transforming manner, combining theoretical and practical knowledge to the context in which the teacher is inserted (SCHÖN, 1995; PÉREZ GÓMEZ, 1995; VILLEGAS-REIMERS, 2003; NÓVOA, 2007; COSTA, 2013), and to EAP, the focus of which is on the English language teaching and learning aiming at the participation and circulation of knowledge in university contexts (FLOWERDEW; PEACOCK, 2001; HYLAND; HAMP-LYONS, 2002; BRUCE, 2011). The guiding question was to understand if the formal, or institutionalized, teacher education program at the LC prepares the student teachers to teach EAP. The research was conducted during eight months of fieldwork and involved ethnographic data generation in a LC through participant observation, audio recordings, photographic records, semi-structured interviews, and document collection. The teacher education program gave teachers the opportunity to learn and practice EAP and to reflect on their teaching through three initiatives of the LC: TOEFL ITP preparation classes, in which participants mobilized their language skills to carry out the test and broaden their repertoire of classroom dynamics; pedagogical-administrative meetings, where they shared classroom materials and inquired about the teacher education developed in their LC, proposing new actions to be implemented; and academic reading and writing classes taught by one of student teachers to their colleagues, in which they could discuss skills and genres that circulate in the academic sphere, analyze them and reflect on their use in the classroom, providing subsidies to these student teachers to deal with the teaching of EAP in that context. In addition, participants’ expressed that there are differences between teaching EAP and general English regarding lesson planning and their own classroom practices, as well as their teacher development itself, because they also need to have knowledge of academic practices besides the linguistic knowledge to teach this type of course. Based on this study, we hope to contribute to a deeper understanding of EAP teacher education and to the need to integrate teaching practices with academic practices.

Full textMother language use (ML) plays a role in proficiency exams of Foreign Language (FL) which are taken as evaluation tools in graduate degrees in Brazil as they make use to a great extent of translation and reading comprehension of a text written in English. However, English courses tend to leave ML out of teaching-learning process. Another important issue lies on the quality and comprehensiveness paid to reading comprehension, although it is known that English courses teach the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) in classrooms. In light of this scenario, this study aims to appraise the perception of the English learning process of thirteen students when they faced the need of undergoing English exams as part of Masters and Doctoral degree selection. Here, we turned our attention to the use of language concerning the objective of reading comprehension, one of the possible branches of the theoretical background of English for Specific Purposes. In this sense, we have taken support from Hutchinson & Waters (1987, p. 19), once they focus on learner-centered approach as well as on the needs the student brings at some moment of his/her professional or academic life. In order to do so, thirteen participants perceptions were collected by means of Focus group technique, concerning the way they have learnt English language over the years. The Appraisal System, proposed by Martin & White (2005) and others, was employed to analyze their realizations, under the scope of Systemic-Functional Linguistics, particularly the semantic domain of Attitude to investigate their opinions. Despite students performed all the categories over Attitude sub-system, Affect and Appreciation were the most frequently used, once their speeches reveal not only the way they felt and still feel when playing the part of students under the current available methods, but also their criticism regarding English learning methodologies. We observed 10 negative Appreciations concerning debarment of ML from the part of language institutes besides 11 negative Appreciations in relation to English language teaching at schools.

The following research was carried out in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, specifically at high school level in public schools. The objective of this research is to know, through surveys, the teachers´ and students’ perceptions, about the use of songs in English teaching. This research is divided into three chapters the first called educational stage of Honduras, in which the its describe the location of the Central American country, as well as a brief description of the economic and social situation of the country. In addition, it describes how the education system in Honduras is organized based on the National Basic Curriculum (CNB), also defines the purpose of each educational level, with an emphasis on the high school level. The second chapter is about the English teaching methodology, and the relevance in Honduras. It also explains the proper use of English songs to increase the four basic skills of a language (listening, speaking, reading and writing). The third and final chapter shows the data analysis about the surveys applied in high school level to teachers and students. At the end of the third chapter it is suggested a didactic proposal based on the songs mentioned by teachers and students.

This study focused on the discussion of critical language education (DUBOC, 2012, 2014; NORTON; PAVLENKO, 2004; OKAZAKI, 2005; PENNYCOOK, 1999, 2001, 2012, 2017; URZÊDA-FREITAS; PESSOA, 2014, among others) with English language teachers from a language school, located in Goiânia, through a collaborative experience of critical teacher education (ELLSWORTH, 1989; HAWKINS, NORTON, 2009; KUMARAVADIVELU, 2012; PESSOA; URZÊDA-FREITAS, 2012; SILVESTRE, 2016, among others). These theoretical perspectives are based on Critical Applied Linguistics (FABRÍCIO, 2006; MOITA LOPES, 2006a, 2006b, 2013a, 2013b; PENNYCOOK, 1990, 2001, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010), in which the teaching-learning process is seen as a politicized act; the classroom is seen as a space of social practices; and teachers and students are seen as active agents of their realities. The research is characterized as qualitative (DENZIN; LINCOLN, 2013) and collaborative (IBIAPINA, 2008; TELES; IBIAPINA, 2009), and it was developed by a group of eight teachers and me in the period of September and December of 2015. During the study, the activities implemented were the reading and the discussion of six academic texts and the problematization of the teaching-learning process of English in the light of these texts. Thus, the objectives of this study were: 1) to discuss which reflections on critical language education stood out and 2) to problematize how the teacher education experience lived was characterized and how the educators interpreted it, grounded on Critical Applied Linguistics. An initial questionnaire, discussions of the focus group on selected texts (recorded in audio), interviews (also recorded in audio), field notes and personal narratives were the sources of the empirical material generated. In relation to the language teaching-learning process, the teachers focused on the discussion of their understandings on the critical language education perspective, in a way they could highlight their local realities and their agency, question conflicts and power relations in the classroom and problematize the teaching materials used in the school. With regard to language teacher education, teacher preparation and the challenges for the implementation of a critical work, principles related to this perspective and the care related to its development, and the hindrances and contributions of the research to the participating group stood out.

Full textThe textbook is one of the most available and used resources for teaching English. Analyzing its roles in the process of teaching and learning is essential for the contribution of the material use in the success of this process. Therefore, the main objective of this research is to understand the use of the textbook made by the teachers in practice, verifying if the material is adapted in some way and the changes made. With the intention of mapping the predominant topics in researches about textbooks, we analyzed Qualis A1 and A2 national publications in Languages/Linguistics Brazilian academic journals and international publications using the search tool of Portal de Periódicos CAPES/MEC website. We also analyzed the contents related to the use of textbooks in methodology books for teaching English. A research on possible adaptations to the textbook was carried out taking the ideas of Greenwood (1987), Graves (2003), Harmer (2001), McDonough e Shaw (1993), Nunan (1991) e Ur (1996) as a starting point. The methodological procedures for data generation were classroom observations and interviews with the teachers. For the observations, seven groups of the Languages without Boarders-English Program were selected. The same teachers who were observed were also interviewed in order to get to know their opinion about the use of textbooks to teach English. The data generated from the observations were analyzed based on the possible adaptations to the material. Through the analysis it was possible to perceive, among other aspects, that: the teachers frequently adapt the textbook and in a diverse way; the textbook has a central role in the choice of contents and types of tasks, even when the teacher complements the book bringing extra material; and most of the classroom time is dedicated to the use of the material. In the interviews, the teachers stated that they consider the textbook as a guide, and affirmed that they use the teacher’s book very little, which was confirmed in the observations. This research aims at contributing to expand empiric studies about the use of textbooks, thus helping teachers reflect on their practices and consciously use the material, adapting it to the context where it is/will be used and prioritizing their students’ interests and needs.

Having as its main purpose to carry out a discussion about the role of the language schools in the professional life of English teachers, this research starts from the stories told by language school English teachers in their reflective portfolios in order to, through narrative inquiry, be able to visit these teachers` lives, observing the reflective process and the stories each teacher chose as the most important to portrait them in their portfolios

In this research I investigate the phenomena traditional class, whose backbone is the coursebook, and complex class, based on the Complex Educational Design (CED), both from the students’ perspective. The phenomena emerge from experiences in English language classes for adults, at a language institute. The English proficiency level in Brazil is not satisfactory when compared to other countries and, associated to that, the contemporary world demands didactic alternatives which can be more inclusive, being able to embrace the interwoven network knowledge. Thus, I propose a reflection upon the contrasts between a traditional and a complex class, based on the essence arising from the description and interpretation processes of such classes. For this purpose, the methodological basis is the complex hermeneutic-phenomenological approach (FREIRE, 2010, 2012, 2017), which, for being a qualitative approach, enables the articulation of objectivity and subjectivity during the interpretation process, fostering the revelation of the essence of the human experiences’ phenomena studied. As theoretical support, I chose the complexity epistemology (MORIN, 1999, 2001, 2005, 2013, 2015) due to its articulation to the methodological approach used, which demonstrates its inter/transdisciplinarity from a teaching-learning point of view, according to Fazenda (2006, 2012) and Leffa (2006). To design the traditional classes, I used coursebooks by an international publisher and for its theoretical basis I found support in the studies of Paiva (2009), who brings a historical overview of the English language coursebook in Brazil, and Souza (1997-1998), who considers that a pedagogical weapon. To the complex classes, I chose a design based on the Complex Educational Design (FREIRE, 2013) proposing a course design based on complexity. Average forty-five-minute classes were taught to two different groups; each one had a traditional and a complex class and the teacher required the seven students to write a text describing the class they had just participated in. Fourteen texts were obtained, and they were interpreted based on the complex hermeneutic-phenomenological approach. From the texts describing the traditional classes, the following themes emerged: Grammar, Learning, Information, Transmission, Repetition and Dynamism. From the complex classes, the themes that emerged were Reflection, Discussion, Learning, Expression and Sharing. The contrasts between the themes of the two kinds of classes suggest that a complex design, for embracing traditional aspects, can be more inclusive, besides promoting reflections upon contemporary issues

Full textThis dissertation aims at investigating the representations of a group of students from a language school towards the English language and its learning process. It discusses the continuing process of identity construction through the analysis of these representations. The theoretical framework of this research is based on a socio-historical perspective of development as discussed by Vygotsky (1934) and it is also supported by Bakhtin s (1929) dialogical comprehension of language. In order to contribute to a better understanding of the issues involved in the construction of identities, this study is also based on Hall (2000), Rajagopalan (1998) and Moita Lopes (2002), amongst others. As for the discussion on the topic of representations, this research is also based on Marková (2003), Moscovici (2003) and Freire and Lessa (2003), amongst others. The data were analysed according to the concept of thematic content, proposed by Bronckart (1999), based on the lexical choices made by the participants. This study was carried out on a language school in the city of Santo André throughout two years. The research followed a critical and interpretative line of inquiry realized through a case study. The representations of these students towards the language and its study were collected and the analysis revealed how their identities are formed. Results have shown that these representations indicate a view towards the language as an opportunity provider and for career development. It has also pointed that the language is seen as a mean of gaining knowledge and providing cultural awareness

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate and compare middle school student’s understanding of Swedish and English idiomatic expressions. Furthermore, this study aims at investigating whether there is any age progression in the understanding of idioms and examine how teachers work with idiomatic expressions. The study was conducted at two different schools and a total of 196 students from year group 4 - 6 participated in a questionnaire survey and a total of five legitimized teachers was interviewed. The study shows that the overall understanding of idiomatic expressions is relatively low. However, the understanding of Swedish idioms is higher than the understanding of English idioms. The progression of English idiom comprehension follows a more linear development curve, while the progression of Swedish idiom comprehension decreases after year five. In Swedish, students show a greater understanding of the idiomatic form, how an expression is structured, rather than the actual meaning of the expression. In English idiomatic comprehension, the study shows that the students have a greater understanding when it comes to the meaning of the expression rather than the form. The result of the interviews shows that teachers, in both subjects, works with idiomatic expressions to a small extent. Swedish teachers work sporadically when idioms occur in fictional texts or when they appear in other educational materials. English teachers, on the other hand, work with idiomatic expressions in a more planned and structured way.

This case study research questioned in which way the use of information and communication technologies (ICT) facilitates the English teaching and learning process taking into consideration the network society and the use of technologies for this purpose. In addition, the way ICT are used in English classes was verified, along with the web 2.0 tools most used in the process. Thus, the general objective of this research was to investigate the potential of web 2.0 tools and their use by teachers and students at Yázigi language school, in São Luís, Maranhão. Data from teachers and students were gotten through questionnaires, focus groups and non-participant observations. The data achieved by closed questions were treated with simple statistics supported by Excel software, while open questions concerning the questionnaires and narratives from the focus groups were treated using the content analysis of the statements and opinions regarding the samples. After that, an analysis of all data collected from the subjects involved in the research was carried out in order to correlate them obtaining more accurate conclusions about the use of Web 2.0 tools in the English teaching and learning process by the subjects who took part in the research. Part of the data generated was analyzed keeping in mind the eight principles of Connectivism (indicated by Siemens, 2004), as well as the objectives proposed in this study since its beginning. It was concluded that web 2.0 tools are used by teachers for the planning of lessons and their use in the classroom. In addition, they are used for monitoring learning outcomes via instant (or non-instant) messaging tools, Facebook groups and WhatsApp as well as for monitoring activities results performed by students using House of English. On the other hand, the students use the web 2.0 tools to study the target language in an organic, not conscious, way. It was noticed that they use English as a means of obtaining information on the web as well as developing various tasks, although a language structured study plan was not perceived. Nevertheless, both groups assured it was important to use those tools. Moreover, students have inferred that their interest in studying the target language increases as web 2.0 tools are used in class. It has also been observed throughout the research that the use of mobile devices has fostered new forms of language study, since the learner prefers the use of applications that associates exercises and games with immediate results, and the possibility of instant communication with the teacher. Therefore, new possibilities of studies about the tools related to mobile learning come up.

The study is aimed at improving the teaching and learning process of English focused on changes in the assessment process. This process is conceived as an integral part of the teaching and learning of English language using alternative forms of assessment. These forms must ensure a formative assessment of the language in authentic communicative situations. The work focuses on the teachers' training in order to introduce changes in their assessment practices. As a result, changes are feasible in a short period of time leading to a better learning of the language. The research was conducted from an interpretative perspective using a qualitative methodology.

[EN] The gender instruction called the non-fiction personal narrative or memoirs, together with the Harkness method of teaching in the written expression of Spanish as a Foreign Language, will demonstrate in the particular context of an American University in Spain and in the US a higher development of this ability and performance. The author of this thesis would like to contribute to a long-awaited Spanish writing presence as L2 in the research literature. This study tries to develop in SFL classes for American universities and students' new methods that manage to awaken the desire since there is no need in this context to learn Spanish. Based on the experience in teaching Spanish to American university and high school students, on the one hand, in the United States as a mandatory requirement by the university for credit in foreign languages and, on the other hand, in American academic programs of immersion in Spain (in both cases following the books and the method imposed by the universities) it is common for students and teachers to be dissatisfied. The intention is to demonstrate that with the Harkness pedagogy and the teaching of written expression through the personal essay genre, it is possible to create an academic curriculum where clear improvements are obtained in the final learning. Besides, it creates an environment where students are motivated and happy to learn a second language. The construction of gender and gender-based instruction could be carried out in a socio-contextual foreground to allow SFL students to see the content in terms of language from the beginning, rather than having to integrate them later. SFL's university study programs have at their disposal shaping their destiny, the quality of their program, and that of their students' learning. The objective will have been achieved if the study has convinced readers that SFL university programs can be revitalized by applying a humanistic, at the same time, language-based orientation.

International academic mobility programs have been intensified in Brazil in the last few years. In 2015, one of these initiatives, Science without Borders (SwB), achieved its goal of sending 100 thousand students for academic programs, 78% being undergraduate students. Since the beginning of this governmental action in 2011, the need for developing Brazilian students’ proficiency in English became evident, which led to the stablishment of the national program Languages without Borders (LwB) in 2013. In this research, we developed an analysis of locally produced teaching materials used in courses for students who wanted to participate in academic mobility programs in English speaking countries. These material have been designed by the local IsF team, with the participation of student teachers. Through an evaluative case study (MERRIAM, 2007), we analysed 6 undergraduate students’ experience after taking courses LwB in Brazil and becoming participants of the SwB program. Using semi-structured interviews and developing a virtual group with the participants, we analysed situations that they have experienced and identified linguistic and pragmalinguistic challenges, the latter are related to appropriate linguistic choices that the speaker makes during communicative situations (KASPE e ROSE, 2001; HINKEL, 2012). The analysis demonstrates, based on principles of teaching materials development (TOMLINSON, 2010), that the materials had a positive impact on the students’ experiences. Issues like autonomy development, extensive opportunities of listening speakers in communicative situations and study of genres were identified. This study reveals that there are aspects to be closely considered in ELT materials for exchange students, such as developing students’ awareness about communication with other speakers of English as a second language and using strategies in new environments.
