Despite teaching English language in Saudi Arabia for 6 decades, yet the outcomes are unsatisfactory. In this article, the lack of qualified English teachers in Saudi Arabia is the main reason for causing that issue. To address the issue, this study attempts to understand how untrained teachers have a negative influence on students' performance and competence. Unstructured interviews were conducted with students from two Saudi schools to reflect on the problems and obstacles that Saudi pupils encounter as a result of their incompetent instructors. Culture and language are inseparable. Language is used both as a means of communication as well as a carrier of culture. Language without culture is unthinkable, so is human culture without language (Wei, 2005). While teaching a foreign language, a teacher needs to accustom himself with the culture of the target language and the culture of learners. However, teachers in different classrooms in different parts of the world still ignore the importance of culture as a part of language study. Abstract:
This article describes how Saudi Arabia has a scholarship program that provides opportunities for Saudi citizens to pursue their undergraduate and graduate university education abroad. Because students have not mastered English, they initially enroll in an English institution. The internet is an enormously valuable learning tool for ESL students. However, Saudi students' use of information resources for learning English is unclear. This study thus investigates the information-seeking behavior of scholarship students when using online resources to learn ESL. The findings reveal that the students have a positive perception of online resources; however, they require training on searching for and using such resources. It is also found that most students use self-motivation to find online resources to increase their knowledge of English. The lack of awareness of appropriate resources is found to be the most common problem.

The positive effects of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) have been widely acknowledged in the body of literature. While the majority of studies concern the use of CALL in the West, there is a dearth of research on the use of CALL in the Middle East and in particular in the Arabian Gulf where the English language plays a prominent role and being able to speak English is the passport to attending higher education and gaining employment. This chapter documents two case studies in higher education institutions in the Gulf, one in Saudi Arabia and one in the United Arab Emirates. The studies show how the use of CALL positively affected Arab students’ language skills and their attitudes towards learning English with technology, paving the way for further research in the Arabian higher education context, where the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for teaching and learning is gaining ground at a fast pace.

This study examines non-traditional language learners’ interactions and satisfaction with online learning in the Saudi context during the pandemic. Saudi Electronic University (SEU) is unique in Saudi Arabia as it has adopted a blended mode of teaching and students’ completion of both online and class-based materials is mandatory. It enables non-traditional students to further their studies. In a quantitative study, 732 students completed a questionnaire which examines the online learning experiences of these learners. The survey assessed learners’ self-efficacy for completing an online course, interactions with content, instructor, other students, and overall satisfaction. The paper examines whether moving to entirely online learning during the pandemic has affected their life and study positively or negatively.

Abstract:
Wall Street English has built online activities that allow students to record phrases and receive word-level Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) driven pronunciation feedback. Students in language centres in China, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and Italy (N=2,867) used ASR-Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL) activities, and some (N=482) completed a questionnaire. A high number of students reported that ASR-CALL activities helped them to improve their pronunciation. However, the study found remarkable differences in usage of product features across countries, with students from Vietnam and China using more retries than Saudi Arabia, and students from Italy using the fewest retries. Students from China, Vietnam, and Saudi Arabia more frequently listened to model audios than students from Italy. A series of Kruskal-Wallis tests revealed significant group differences between dominant L1 and students’ beliefs and perceptions using ASR, and between age groups and students’ beliefs and perceptions using ASR. This study points to the importance of considering regional differences, and suggests that learner engagement may depend not only on the effectiveness of the technology, but also on learner beliefs and perceptions.
