Abstract:
Since 2004, the International Civil Aviation Organization has imposed pilots and air traffic controllers elsewhere in the world to comply with the established language proficiency standards as a safety measure against language and communication problems during flights. Currently, one of the problems that aviation English practitioners face is the lack of training materials on aviation specifications to learn various language aspects. This article discusses peculiarities of technical English used in aerospace. Thus, technical English not only facilitates communication between native and non-native English speakers but reduces the risk of errors and overall risks as well. In this regard, appropriate teaching approaches should be chosen, various tools and forms of teaching English aviation language should be used to form the language competence of future specialists.

Abstract The present paper provides a series of examples of common translation mistakes that are the result of source language interference. The issue of crosslinguistic interference, and its impact upon translation is a useful aspect to consider if one wishes to significantly improve translation results and create texts which stay true to the target language structure. Comparing the grammatical structure of the source and target languages of a text becomes a tool for predicting possible mistakes rooted in source language transfer to the target language of a text. Initially, comparative-contrastive analyses were performed primarily in the field of language teaching and acquisition, but recently the method has started being applied also in the field of Translation Studies. The comparative analysis of specific language structures can thus come in handy for both the study of translation and for translator training.

Duolingo is a free online language learning app. It adapts to the needs of “mobile learning” and allows language learners to take full advantage of “fragmented” time for language learning, using gamification and adaptive learning techniques to teach foreign languages. Once on the start screen of Duolingo, 16 language courses will be presented in English. Learners can control four learning modes and choose their learning styles. Beginners can start from basic courses. If you are not a beginner, take a five-minute placement test to match your placement. In addition to the 16 languages mentioned above, there are 38 language learning combinations (English <> Spanish, English > French, English > German or English > Portuguese, etc.). The system will prompt the user to create a personal profile to save the learning progress, and be able to set the learning, practicing content and learning time. Duolingo is as effective as any leading language learning software. As a language-learning app, Duolingo can be used as a tool for self-study or blended learning context.

Linguistic and cultural needs of non-English Speaking background graduates in science and technology fields are currently not being met due to the lack of specific language and communication programs. This paper discusses the development of an innovative Scientific and Technical English curriculum to be offered in university as well as industrial settings, with the aim of providing language and acculturation bridging programs for the overseas qualified professionals, to satisfy Australia’s educational and industry requirements. It describes the aims, design and outcomes of a modular, socio-cultural, negotiated curriculum, written from a perspective of training in its broad sense with education playing an integral part. The acquisition of communicative skills in English which will enable the learners to access and function in positions commensurate with their overseas qualifications and experience is seen as the ultimate objective of the program.

Abstract:
This paper explores degrees of equivalence constructed in English technical definitions. From an ergative perspective, the degree of equivalence depends upon the effectiveness of the clause (i.e. effective vs middle). Effective clauses tend to be encoding in orientation (i.e. the direction of the coding in the clause is from the gloss to the term) whereas middle clauses tend to be decoding (from term to gloss) (Halliday 1967/8, 1994; Davidse 1992a, 1996). In technical definitions, ideational meaning (expressed in relational clauses) is typically metafunctionally dominant and lexicogrammatically "deautomatized" (Mukarovsky 1977), while interpersonal meanings (expressed in mood and modality) are less dominant and "automatized". In technical definitions, the source of knowledge is either absent but probeable or absent and non-probeable. It is argued here that, despite the general automatization of interpersonal meaning in definitional clauses, a residue of interpersonality is in fact critical to the degree of equivalence constructed in the clause.

The article highlights the urgent need for a new approach to teaching ESP (English for professional purposes) to Master’s applicants specializing in Physics and Mathematics. Therefore, a comparative analysis of textbooks and methods has been carried out to draw a parallel between traditional and innovative approaches to teaching foreign languages in technical tertiary institutions. The analysis has revealed the insufficiency of comprehensive ESP methodologies particularly in terms of teaching would-be mathematicians and physicists considering the science-students’ mindset. The latter should be primarily taken into account to ensure that the selection and submission of educational materials are tailored to the needs of science modes of thinking, namely, coherent and cohesive presentation of a project and its results and arguments; unified forms of presented achievements; academic command of style; concise and laconic content; universal “schemes” of presenting results. Within this context the role of extracurricular autonomous studies has been reconsidered and re-evaluated as far as language learning skills and competences are concerned. Particularly, benefits and drawbacks of individual work with an academic article have been examined as well as the current online availability of material and the extent of teacher’s involvement. The article stresses the need of transforming the conventional teaching models of technical translation and science-literature reading into a new form of seminar-workshop consultation. Its distinctive features and key principles would include its correlation with physical and mathematical disciplines, the use of specific formulaic expressions. The conclusion advances an idea based on some theoretical evidence of close integration between English and science departments to provide a Master’s applicant with relevant skills and competencies for professional communication in English.

Abstract:
This paper reports on patterns of verb choice in identifying relational clauses (e.g. ‘X is Y, Y is X’) in English technical manuals. While it is obvious that specific lexical verbs will feature in identifying clauses of different functions, e.g. mean (defining), call (naming), exemplify (exemplifying), less transparent is the distribution of these more specific verbs and the general or neutral verb be. The findings suggest that verb choice in (technical) identifying clauses is strongly associated with the degree of equivalence constructed between the two central nominal groups in the clause (the Token and Value). Equivalence relations are one-to-one (rather than one-to-many) and exhaustive (rather than semantically open). Major grammatical influences on equivalence include nominal group structure, ergativity of the clause, and the inclusion of features (e.g. interpersonal, logical or textual) that undermine the privileging of an experientially homogeneous world-view. The results challenge the notions that be and specific verbs are interchangeable and that be is an unmarked choice. On the contrary, the data reveal that under certain conditions be is the more marked choice. The results have practical implications for teachers and students of English (in particular, students of English for Academic and/or Specific Purposes) as well as translators.

The lexicon is one of the most core elements in a language system, so acquiring/learning it is a must-do job for ESL/EFL learners. Nevertheless, whether ESL/EFL learners can employ English lexical learning strategies (LLS) autonomously or not has concerned researchers and educators in different contexts. This study, therefore, endeavors to explore the use of autonomous English LLS by non-English majors at a technical Ho Chi Minh City-based university in Vietnam. It involved 200 students in answering a closed-ended questionnaire and ten students in semi-structured interviews. The results revealed that research participants sometimes utilized LLS autonomously in English language learning. Among five groups of autonomous English LLS, participants sometimes tended to use more determination strategies than other groups of social, cognitive, and metacognitive strategies and memory strategies. Additionally, the results showed that females utilized English LLS more autonomously than males. The findings imply that technical students, especially male students, seemed not to focus much on English LLS.

Controlled language, as a subset of natural language, refers to the restricted or standardised use of lexicon, grammar and style. It has been hypothesised that the use of controlled language makes technical texts more translatable and therefore more understandable. This paper reports the results of an experimental study designed to test this hypothesis. The results showed that controlled technical language improved the comprehensibility and translatability of technical documentation in terms of accuracy, style and text quality. The study suggests that international companies should employ technical writers and translators who prioritise the language and extralinguistic norms of the target audience, rather than blindly adhering to the source text.

This research examines the contribution of language variation in translating technical texts from English into Arabic language. It aims at analyzing language variation, technical texts translation competence, creating subject field knowledge and generating authenticity in technical texts and translation setting. This study attempts to uncover problems that English language and literature students at the University of Jordan / Aqaba branch problems of translating technical texts. This qualitative research included 30 B.A students selected randomly from the Dept. of English Language and Literature at the University of Jordan. The results of the study revealed that literature students encountered many problems when translating technical texts, particularly when using two different varieties of English American / British into Arabic language. This research recommends that translators and professional in the field should be concerned with translating technical texts and include them in translation syllabi.

The study examines socio-psychological orientations of students of technical education (commerce colleges, technology colleges, Technical training institutes, and vocational training institutes) towards the learning of English language. The study emphasizes the social psychological variables of attitude and motivation. In technical education the syllabus of English is different from the institutes of general education. The students of general education study English language till the last year of their graduation, while the students of commerce education study functional English in the 3rd year and business communication in 4th year. These courses relate to business correspondence. The study finds that students of technical education concentrate on learning of English for its utilitarian purpose. It is due to the reason that the absence of inadequate language policy and linguistic reality of Pakistan impact these essential socio- psychological elements of the student and his view point about English language learning. Further, students also like to learn English language due to 'instrumental' purpose or for the purpose to acculturate themselves with the target language society.

Abstract:
The purpose of the work is to create a methodology for managing educational activities in LMS English Patient using blended learning model Flipped Classroom in the course of improving the language skills of university teachers. The study was conducted in four stages. At the first stage, the features and technical characteristics of the LMS English Patient for teaching foreign languages at the university were studied. At the second stage, the authors electronic course Professional English Language Development (PELD) was developed in LMS English Patient for teaching foreign languages at the university according to the model of blended learning Flipped Classroom. At the third stage, the methodology of organizing educational activities according to the Flipped Classroom model using the LMS English Patient is described. At the fourth stage, the level of formation of language skills while working in the LMS English patient was revealed. The scientific novelty of the study consists in creating of effective methodology for managing educational activities using blended learning Flipped Classroom model in LMS English Patient. It is proved that LMS English patient, as a means of organizing the educational process according to the blended learning model for learning a foreign language, is an effective tool for organizing not only independent work, but also classroom interaction of students with a teacher, which is demonstrated by the high efficiency (76.8 %) of mastering language skills as a result of final testing.

The purpose of this article is the study of morphonological phenomena in the word formation of the English language of science. Morphonology is a relatively new discipline, and before proceeding to the study of specific material. The authors consider it necessary to acquaint the reader with its main provisions. Morphonology word formation of modern English scientific and technical literature contributes to the standardization of terminological systems based on the mutual influence of the general standard language and the language of science as its functional type. It should be noted that there is no strict dependence between the parameters of word families and modifications of the basis, except for one thing: there is no change of the basis in the adverbial direction of the derivative. Morphological modifications of the producing base in one direction or another, as a rule, are obligatory, but optional. The scientific value is that the wide prevalence of morphological phenomena in the word formation of the English language puts forward the provision on taking into account morphological modifications in the producing basis in the formation of producing words, which is very important in the process of teaching professionally-oriented scientific English. The practical value of this research is that special research in the field of teaching reading literature in the specialty is the main purpose of teaching a foreign language to scientific and technical workers and students of non-linguistic universities. The article concludes that the practice of teaching foreign languages shows that the use of word formation achievements as one of the linguistic disciplines greatly facilitates learning a foreign language. The research uses a comparative method, transformational, descriptive, and semantic. The results of the study indicate the regularity and wide prevalence of morphonological modifications in the generating basis for the formation of derived words in the process of teaching English.

The goal lies in description of the terms of chemical industry, namely "Production of technical formalin" in the Russian and English languages. The subject of this article is the study of the terminological systems of chemical industry in the field of production of technical formalin relative to functionality of the term-word and terminological phrase. The novelty consists in the comparative analysis of the terminological system "Production of technical formalin" on the example of Russian and English languages. Abstract:
The interactive learning is the mandatory requirement in the Federal State Educational Standard of Higher Education. Language skills are necessary for high-qualified specialists in different fields including the technical sphere. Therefore, the new interactive methods of teaching a foreign language should be developed. The goal of the study was to theoretically substantiate and experimentally test the pedagogical conditions and implementation forms of interactive teaching a foreign language at technical university. As research tools, we used methods of literature review, theoretical analysis of pedagogical literature, and generalization of scientific data. It is concluded that in the educational practice such forms of interactive learning as creative tasks, educational games, work in groups, projects and e-Learning are used. As a result of the study, there have been proposed pedagogical conditions for implementing interactive language teaching; besides, there have been studied the educational resources of the interactive forms; the created and tested author's educational and methodological materials based on the platforms Quizlet and Worldwall.net were intended for the effective organization of students independent work in an interactive mode. The study concluded that interactive methods and techniques develop language skills, but by teaching a foreign language in modern conditions, a competent combination of traditional academic forms and interactive, including electronic forms, is required.

In Quebec—a province with complex and fraught language politics—the federal Official Languages Act recognizes the English-speaking population of Quebec as a minority language community. Anchored in the perspective of English-speaking Quebec, the essay argues that the Official Languages Act is an attempt at nation-building, embedded and embroiled in the history and politics of language. First, the essay discusses how the existence of English-speaking Quebec shaped language rights and the Official Languages Act in particular. Next, it describes the English-speaking minority of Quebec and how this minority fits within the framework of the Act, commenting on and critiquing the Act from this perspective. Lastly, it argues that the modernization of the Act is more than just a technical exercise and that it requires a national conversation and debate around language and identity.

One of the main tasks of training postgraduate students in graduate school is to develop competences necessary to present and discuss the results of their research work in a foreign language in oral and written forms, as well as to fully understand foreign language scientific texts in their specialty.In the last decades international scientific communication has shifted from a plural use of several languages to a clear dominance of English. The shift implies that an ever-increasing number of scientists whose mother tongue is not English have moved to English for publication and conference participation.A literature analysis and own experience revealed such problems of postgraduate students’ training in foreign languages as heterogeneity of the contingent with an unequal and often low initial level of language proficiency, a limited number of hours allocated for practical classes in English; a low level of self-directedness in language learning, a lack of elementary knowledge of the scientific discourse.In an attempt to solve these problems, the Department of Foreign Languages staff at Kharkiv National Automobile and Highway University have developed and implemented a training course for postgraduate students in two, traditional paper and online, versions, the latter designed with the use of such a modern approach in language didactics as audiovisual translation appropriate for self-learning and flipped classroom activities. The course comprised three modules: scientific reading, academic speaking and academic writing. Besides, postgraduates with the elementary level of English were offered a grammar course covering all the basic grammatical topics necessary to formulate correct written and oral utterances. The effects of teaching English with the use of videos with recorded parallel bilingual vocabulary and texts placed on an online platform were compared to the results of the traditional teaching with the use of the paper copy. The research was carried out in the 2021-2022 academic year and aimed, firstly, to compare language skills of two groups of learners: those who studied the course with the use of audiovisual technology (the experimental group) with those who studied in the traditional mode (the control group); and, secondly, to reveal how the level of self-directedness changed in the process of the course study in both groups. The study involved a mixed approach of quantitative and qualitative methods to diagnose the level of learners' language competence and self-directedness. Our results indicate that the use of audiovisual translation in teaching foreign languages improves students’ language skills and increases autonomy in studies. It can be concluded that utilizing audiovisual translation due to auditory and visual support and opportunity for learners to study at their own pace has a significant impact on postgraduate students’ language proficiency though this approach requires further research and wider implementation.

In some Rwandan schools, the use of Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in English teaching has influenced students' English performance. In technical secondary schools, language teachers have begun utilizing new technologies as pedagogical tools to enhance students' English performance. The current study investigates how teachers adapt to the use of CALL and its implications for students' performance in English subjects in some Rwandan technical secondary schools. Sociocultural theory in language teaching guided this investigation. It used a descriptive research design with a sample of 24 English teachers from Nyanza Technical Secondary Schools. This study utilized a census of all 24 English teachers. Data were collected using questionnaires in the form of a Likert scale. Descriptive analyses indicate that 91% of respondents have a positive attitude towards CALL. The findings show that teachers of English use CALL in teaching English, which affects students’ performance in English. The inferential analysis results show a P value of 0.020, which is lower than the significant correction of 0.05. Therefore, the study findings confirm the teachers’ positive attitude towards CALL. According to the research, the Rwanda TVET Board should train new teachers and continue updating existing English teachers with new CALL technologies.

This analysis examines some of the problems that are faced by teachers and students in the teaching and learning of English for special purposes (ESP) in multilingual nations. A survey recently found that although 98 percent knew that English was the sole language of instruction at the institution, only 49 percent expected to study English as a subject in any form as part of their curriculum. Many students looked upon English as a subject of study necessary only to gain entrance into the university, and had little motivation to study it past the secondary level. Other problems faced by teachers and students include the multilingual background of the learners, lack of cooperation from teachers of other subjects, the need to import language materials, poor levels of language teacher training, and large class sizes. An alternative approach to ESP is suggested, one in which the learner's native language and other languages in the learner's environment play a major role in tertiary education. The importation of culturally and educationally irrelevant materials is noted along with the urgent need for teacher training reform.

This paper studies English words and phrases formed by means of conversion. The authors provide a definition of the term and dwell on the history of this phenomenon in the English language. Types of conversion (full and partial, classical and non-classical) and its directions (verbification, nominalization, and adjectivization) are considered. The authors focus on such interesting phenomena as ellipsis, abbreviation and others. Typical stems (simple and complex – affixal and portmanteau) are analysed, as well as two types of acronyms (using individual initial letters and syllables) that are utilized in word formation by means of conversion. Further, difficulties translating sentences with words formed through conversion are pointed out. Two main criteria for determining the direction of conversion are named: 1) the meaning of the source stem is wider than that of the derived word; 2) the source member of the pair has a more extensive derivational family. The authors introduce their own examples based on the information from Russian-English, English-Russian and English-English dictionaries to demonstrate the use of conversion in various spheres (scientific and technical, journalistic, nonfiction, and literary texts). As a result, the authors come to the conclusion that conversion, being an advanced way of word formation in English, helps to significantly expand the vocabulary and achieve the most adequate translation of different parts of speech in a certain context. This article can be of use to scholars dealing with translation problems, practicing translators and university teachers of English.

The aim of the research is to identify the nominative and structural characteristics of metaphorical terms in technical discourse using the material of Russian, Bashkir, and English. The paper clarifies the notions “metaphor” and “metaphorical models” in a comparative aspect. In scientific language, metaphorization is the process of selecting terms based on similarities between different objects in terms of their features, functions, or characteristics. The main conceptual fields in the formation of metaphorical terms are represented by the metaphorical models “Human” and “Nature”. The study is novel in that it is the first to analyze metaphorical term formation in the Russian, Bashkir, and English languages, introducing into scientific use new factual data on technical terminology in a comparative aspect. It was found that in the analyzed languages, there is a high percentage of metaphors within the “Human” and “Nature” models. The research revealed that the process of metaphorization in technical terminology is more extensive in Russian and English compared to the Bashkir language. Metaphor proves to be an effective means of forming technical terms in the languages under consideration.

The application of modern technology represents a significant advance in contemporary English language teaching methods. Indeed, Mohammad Reza Ahmadi (2018) maintains that electronic teaching programmes have become the predominant preference of instructors since they arguably boost positive student engagement with teachers and incentivize overall English language learning. Most contemporary English language teachers now actively incorporate a range of technological aids designed to facilitate optimum teaching delivery. The current research therefore addresses various elements of the technology used in English teaching by devising innovative curricula which harnesses recent scientific and technical developments, equip instructors with the technological skills to ensure effective and quality subject delivery, provide technical media such as audio-visual and modern technical programmes, and create student-teacher platforms which maximize positive language learning outcomes. English, as a second language in Tanzania, and a medium of instruction in higher learning institutions has shown discrepancies in students’ academic performance. Therefore, the study focused mainly on three specific objectives: to explore the use of English as a medium of instruction in terms of teachers’/students’ competency and confidence of students at Arusha Technical College, to describe the student’s academic performance in terms of proficiency in EMI, continuous assessment, and semester examination of students at Arusha Technical College, and to determine the relationship between the use of English as a Medium of instruction and the student’s academic performance in Tanzania. The study employed a quantitative research method specifically using descriptive and correlational research design. The secondary data were collected through a literature review; while the primary data were obtained through a self-constructed questionnaire. Questionnaire data were analyzed through the use of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences version 24 (SPSS). The study used a sample size of 100 respondents from Arusha Technical College where the English language is used as a medium of instruction. The results of the study revealed that most students had sufficient English language mastery due to the background of their previous education level. This fact led to the understanding and success in speaking and writing good English. Further, the findings showed that the lecturers used code-switching and translation strategies to enable students to understand the lessons. The study recommends a need for further research to be conducted on other institutions of higher learning to make rational decisions about usefulness of the language of instruction.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to address the maintenance errors caused by the lack of understanding of maintenance manuals. English is the official language of civil aviation and all relevant maintenance manuals are written in it, but – for 80 per cent of the global maintenance personnel who are using such manuals – English is not their native language. The majority of these users have knowledge of English that is rather limited and they are easily confused by complex sentences and by the number of meanings and synonyms that English words may have. Design/methodology/approach – Scientific analysis of the faulty maintenance tasks to determine the impact of the inability of maintenance personnel to correctly understand maintenance manual written in English. Findings – Analysis of the maintenance processes clearly shows that ineffective communication between system designers and maintenance personnel, through maintenance documentation, is a well-recognised contributor to the occurrence of a faulty maintenance task. Practical implications – Significant improvements in the direction of effective communication and improvement in a quality of maintenance could be achieved by applying Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100), the benefit of which on the quality of maintenance is presented in this paper. Originality/value – Unique consideration of the quality of maintenance, which is to see it as a function of the comprehension of maintenance manuals written in English.

The article is devoted to the quite relevant topic of interdependence between language and cognitive structures, which is especially important for a regulated scientific and technical functional style. The analysis of the received material showed that metaphors related to the design, construction and operation of ships/ vessels can be divided into the following general, basic categories: TECHNOLOGY - SPACE, TECHNOLOGY - MOVEMENT, TECHNOLOGY - OBJECT, TECHNOLOGY - MIND, TECHNOLOGY - EMOTION, TECHNOLOGY - VISION, TECHNOLOGY - CHARACTERISTIC/PROPERTY. The universality of the cognitive metaphor SPACE lies in the fact that science is generally implemented in the form of a spatial metaphor and is understood as some environment or space for exploration, definition, discovery, some world that unfolds around the object or in which the object is located: a field, a segment , layer, place. The metaphorical model TECHNOLOGY - MOVEMENT is logically connected with the environment (space) of scientific knowledge, where such movement can occur. The metaphorical model TECHNOLOGY - OBJECT presents what turns out to be the goal or task of research. The metaphorical model TECHNOLOGY - MIND is a kind of evidence of the interaction of thinking and language as a means of reflecting reality, one of the examples can be cases of expressing the physical perception of reality through language. The metaphorical model TECHNOLOGY - EMOTION is often used to isolate economic or technical problems (disasters or economic crises). The metaphorical model TECHNOLOGY - VISION actualizes the fact that the world is perceived by human senses (visual, auditory, tactile). The metaphorical model TECHNOLOGY - CHARACTERISTIC/PROPERTY is expressed by terminological anthropometric adjectives or noun phrases. So, in the metaphors of English-language scientific texts on the subject of shipbuilding, we singled out the most frequent metaphorical models, which makes it possible to more clearly understand the characteristic features of this concept and its meaning for scientific and technical discourses, that is, from a cognitive point of view, to see a metaphor as a mental operation that allows you to understand some part of reality: first it is formed on the basis of experience, and then in the form of a conceptual model it is activated by a certain lexeme (the focus of the metaphor) and is fixed as a mandatory and stereotypical element of the scientific and technical functional style.

Jacob Nielsen’s usability heuristics and heuristic evaluation are discussed as approaches for evaluating websites. Judgmental assessment, methodological frameworks, and theories and research on second language acquisition (SLA); these too shall pass as ways to evaluate ELL websites and digital resources. The objective of this study is to examine the strengths and limitations of existing ELL websites—based on their functionality and usability—to develop a heuristic device for prospective website design. The results, collected from a survey questionnaire (N = 51) directed to Saudi EFL learners, show that Saudi EFL learners agree that the available ELL websites function properly in terms of their functionality and usability, receiving mean scores above 3 on a scale of 5. This evaluation research has various implications. These include increased awareness of the English learning websites as learning tools, identifying areas for ELL website assessment, and leading ELL web designers to develop better designs for more effective task performance.

In this study, there are 2 objectives, 1) To determine the effect of the quality of English course services on people's satisfaction at the UPT Center for Science, Technology and Language of Pontianak City. 2) Knowing the sub-variables of the quality of English course services that have a dominant influence on community satisfaction at the UPT Center for Science, Technology and Languages of Pontianak City. The results achieved in this study, 1) The effect of service quality on community satisfaction in the service of the English language course at the UPT Center for Science, Technology and Language of Pontianak City. The article is written on the basis of the master’s study on online foreign languagesteaching, in this case, the English language. Online teaching or distance learning is no longer a “novelty” inmodern methods of teaching foreign languages. However, the question that requires close attention today inthe process of online teaching is the preparedness of teachers to teach online and their possession of necessaryskills for this. This study presents the results of a small survey (n = 378) among teachers of English as asecond language (TEFL), where they determine their level of technical skills necessary for teaching languagesonline. The survey was conducted in online and traditional modes and included 32 questions exclusively inEnglish. The data were correlated with the skills offered in the Internet language learning system accordingto L.K.L. Compton’s theory.
