This article analyzes the reception of the figure of O. Wilde, the 19th-century English writer, and his works in the prose and criticism of Alexandra Mikhailovna Moiseeva (1874-1913), who entered the history of Russian literature of the Silver Age by the name of “Mire”. The study focuses mainly on her story Black Panther (1909), in which the author provides an original perspective on the tragic love episode in Wilde’s life. This dissertation presents a study of the ways in which concepts of pain were treated across a broad range of late Victorian writing, placing literary texts alongside sermons, medical textbooks and campaigning leaflets, in order to suggest a pattern of representation and evasion to be perceived throughout the different texts assembled. In the first two chapters I establish the cultural and historical background to physical suffering in the late nineteenth century, as the Christian paradigm for suffering (the subject of the first chapter) lost its pre-eminance to that of medicine (Chapter Two).

Abstract:
A survey of academic histories of literature published in the 19th and 20th centuries in different countries reveals that, while thoroughly covering the English Renaissance poetics, the scholarship allows for a variety of views on Tudor literary theory and on what constitutes literary canon. Considering this variety of views, we also have to be aware of two different perspectives on the large body of literary art of the 16th-century: the present-day and the Elizabethan. Drawing on a substantial number of sources, we offer a general account of influential theoretical (poetological and rhetorical) works known in the 16th-century Great Britain, including those written in English. Also of note are educational treatises, “mirror” literature, and metaliterary comments withing literary works. Authors of those treatises used to interpret fiction as something feigned, counterfeit — an attitude informing ludic passages in Spenser and Shakespeare. Whereas the techniques of fashioning fictions by way of employing figures of feigned/counterfeit representation were addressed in detail by such critics as R. Sherry and G. Puttenham, the poets — Spenser and Shakespeare — seemed to be testing these techniques in practice. Our study pays particular attention to methods used by Spenser and Shakespeare when creating simulated, fictional reality.

The article is devoted to the study of readers’ receptions of N.V. Gogol “Taras Bulba” in Russia. This work, imbued with a deep religious and patriotic intention, occupies such a significant place in Russian culture that the reviews of readers and critics, the assessments and interpretations of its researchers, dramatizations in the theater, opera and ballet, etc. allows to analyze not only history of the story’s existence, but also to trace the key moments of Russian life in the second half of the 19th–20th centuries. The interaction of the patriotic story’s spiritual lyricism with the contradictory socio-political processes of the era identifies the most significant features of the poetics of Gogol’s work. Enthusiastically received by contemporaries, including A.S. Pushkin, “Taras Bulba” was subsequently met with hostility from domestic liberalradical and Polish nationalist criticism. Continuing to be one of the favorite works of the domestic and foreign readers, the story after 1917 was removed from the Soviet school curriculum and again restored in rights only during the Great Patriotic War. The article presents a detailed analysis of the assessments and interpretations of “Taras Bulba” for more than a century and a half.

Abstract The term “fair play” emerges in the late 14th century, and already has its modern meaning in the Scottish poet Robert Henryson a century later. By the 1590s “fair play” was well established in the language, with Shakespeare himself a prominent early adopter. For the next couple of centuries “fair play” had a secondary meaning of “free action”, and in some contexts it is not easy to say which was the primary meaning intended. We first find the idea that “fair play” is a particularly English, or British, trait in Daniel Defoe’s writings. This association with being British often goes hand in hand with the idea that the common people in particular live by a code of fair play (in which enjoyment of the spectacle of others fighting was usually an important component). We also first find in the early 18th century the association between fair play and schoolboy culture. After 1800 the analysis is based on the occurrence of “fair play” in periodical literature. The idea that fair play is an English or British trait rose sharply in the second half of the 19th century, but we also find the idea used in new ways: for example, that it requires justice in the way society treats women, the poor, or ethnic minorities. The note of scepticism or even ridicule also becomes more insistent: many writers asserted that a particular situation belied the English or British reputation for fair play, but an increasing number questioned whether that reputation had ever been justified.

The present paper focuses on the history of the rise of classical poetry in the17th century England by Edmund Gosse, the outstanding British 19th century critic, writer and poet. The author aims at analyzing Gosse’s work as a scientific monograph, on the one hand, and fiction, on the other hand. In his history of the rise of English classical poetry Gosse sheds light upon the life and work of twelve poets: E. Waller, J. Denham, W. Davenant, A. Cowley, S. Godolphin, J. Cleveland, R. Wild, W. Chamberlayne, T. Stanley, H. Vaughan, A. Marvell, J. Dryden. The paper deals with the scientific methods used by Gosse in his work and its fictional elements such as his personal point of view, a variety of stylistic devices, etc. The author of the present paper draws a conclusion on the combination and interaction of a work of science and that of fiction in Gosse’s book.

This chapter examines an early, substantial piece of Tyneside Dialect Literature, the poem The Pitman’s Pay by Thomas Wilson (born 1773 in Gateshead). The Pitman’s Pay, published 1826-1830, has several characteristics which make it ideal for linguistic analysis: it introduced many of the orthographic conventions for representing Tyneside dialect; its length provides large numbers of tokens of many linguistic features; the non-standard spelling system was employed in a consistent fashion to represent aspects of Wilson’s Tyneside dialect accurately; it has a regular rhyme scheme (ABAB) with almost all of the 568 rhyming pairs in the dialect part of the poem being exact rhymes. The combination of the regular rhyme scheme and consistent non-standard spellings allows us to reconstruct the phonology of his early 19th century dialect in rich detail. This chapter thus demonstrates that 19th century dialect writing is an important linguistic resource for understanding the phonological history of Tyneside English and other dialects of Northern English.

Over the last seventy years, the discipline of English literature has been marked by an unnecessary and largely counterproductive tension between aesthetics and history. For many politically oriented critics, aesthetics was either uninteresting or implicated in the elite practices they deliberately opposed. And for those who focused on aesthetics, history frequently seemed like a distraction from what made the work of art a special kind of utterance, separate from other modes of language. This chapter revisits some of the signal literary engagements in the latter half of the long twentieth century, in order to consider what has been accomplished, what we have left out, and where we may be going next. With reference to writers from Donne and Herbert to John Milton, the chapter suggests, finally, that our analyses have too frequently ignored the decidedly impractical pleasure that emerges from literary activity, and argues that by bringing our own pleasure out of the closet, we can begin to restore to literary criticism some of the visceral thrill that drew us to it in the first place.

Abstract:
The article discusses the distinction between the concepts of «edition» and «version» in the history of the text of L.N. Tolstoy’s stories and plays of the 1880 s, addressed to the people’s audience. The author revises the traditional approach to the textual criticism of the writer’s works, according to which the indicators of a new edition appearance are taken from the graphic features of manuscripts, such as quantitative indicators of changes in the text and the abundance of its discrepancies. The author of the article concludes that the problem of editions and versions of Tolstoy’s folk stories and plays should be solved by combining the tasks of textual and literary studies: to trace the formation of such categories as content and form of works from manuscript to manuscript, to take into account the dynamics of the artist’s worldview, his creative and aesthetic search. To create an objective picture in the research, it is necessary to cover the entire manuscript corpus of writer’s works, but not selectively published fragments in the Anniversary edition and or the volumes of the academic series «Literary Heritage».

Abstract:
This chapter analyses how discussions about race and nationhood surfaced in nineteenth-century British and American literary criticism and literary historiography. It discusses Carlyle’s and Emerson’s writings about the relationship between literature and nationality and argues that, drawing on a handful of near-contemporary German and French authors, they positioned themselves at the crossroads of cultural nationalism and literary cosmopolitanism. The second half of the chapter explains how Carlyle and Emerson conceptualised continuity and change in literary history and highlights the role of Romantic expressivism in their nation-centred poetics. The two developed conflicting accounts of English literary history: where Carlyle’s narrative emphasised the past achievement and future global dominance of metropolitan writing, Emerson tended to invest in the authority of the English canon to locate the future of a specifically Anglo-American tradition in the cultural periphery.

Abstract:
The present article is devoted to the multidimensional analysis of the book by I.A. Bunin “Liberation of Leo Tolstoy” (1937). Attention is devoted to the history of its creation and to its unique structure, combining the genres of memoirs, journalistic sketch, diary, epistles and literary portrait with philosophical contemplation. Special consideration is paid to the properties of style of the text as well as to the development of the artistic image of Leo Tolstoy. The center of the research is occupied by the problem of the spiritual and religious quest of Tolstoy in the latest decades of his life, to his multifaceted concept of liberation and also to the enigma of his last flight from Yasnaya Poliana. Bunin’s interpretations are investigated on the complex background of literary, philosophical and theological evaluations of Tolstoy’s worldview, as it took shape after the spiritual crisis of his later years. Different reactions to his final escape are also taken into account. The article reflects the positions of G. Adamovitch, V. Hodasevitch, V. Maklakov, I. Shahovskoy, S. Bulgakov, as well as many other literary critics, philosophers and theologians. Bunin’s book is investigated as a source for the studies of spiritual and intellectual quest on the verge of the centuries, i.e. the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Bunin’s book is presented also in the context of Russian émigré literary and philosophical criticism.
