This dissertation refuses the assumption that poetry is a dying art form. In this study, I focus on poets Marc Smith, David Hernández, Patricia Smith, and Bob Holman. <p> The oceans and seas play a fascinating role in human culture and literature. This thesis examines the sea imagery in several Anglo-Saxon poems in order to gain a deeper understanding of the function the sea plays in the Anglo-Saxon literary psyche. These texts include <i>Beowulf, Andreas, Exodus,</i> as well as the shorter "Seafarer" and "Whale" poems. The first part of this thesis focuses on sea imagery at the word level, analyzing Anglo-Saxon morphology and lexical compounding as a key to the metaphorical content of sea-kennings. In this article I explore the work of Lorine Niedecker, a poet not conventionally associated with disability studies, in order to flesh out an account of the function of visual disability in midcentury poetics and praxis. To do this I read Niedecker’s formative sequence “For Paul,” the late long poem “Wintergreen Ridge,” and other poems, through deformative practices in the belief that such an engagement shows how Niedecker’s hybrid objectivist praxis can be integrated with critical models of disability studies.
