Abstract:
The aim of this essay is to find out how well Swedish adolescents understand concrete and abstract English proverbs, if concrete proverbs are easier to understand than abstracts ones, if there are differences between boys’ and girls’ and between monolinguals’ and bilinguals’ understanding of these. In a multiple-choice questionnaire, Swedish 7th to 9th graders read 15 short stories followed by three choices. They were then asked to mark the alternative they thought best described the proverb in each sentence. The results in this study show that, generally, concrete proverbs are easier to understand than abstract ones and that proverb understanding steadily increases in adolescence. Furthermore, the difference between boys and girls as a whole was not significant, nor between monolinguals and bilinguals. However, differences between different language groups were immense.

Abstract:
This study will examine the representation and embodiment of the body part eye(s), in proverbs. The research is cross-linguistic as the proverbs analysed are in the languages English, Swedish, and Japanese. Information about the origins of proverbs, their expansion across the globe, their use in order to embellish everyday communication in all different types of languages, even those belonging to cultures not similar to the Western norm, will be discussed with references to sources based in the area of Paremiology. The study will also investigate cultural markers found in the proverbs and how the metaphoric interpretations of eye(s) are displayed through our bodily experiences. In order to analyse the representation of eye(s) in the proverbs, through metaphoric concepts, this study will employ Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory. Categories which will accompany the conceptual metaphors are based on one of the Oxford English Dictionary’s definitions of ‘eye’. Thereafter, an analysis is conducted regarding eyes(s) in the example proverbs. The results of the analysis showed that there are quite a few similarities in all three languages. However, the western languages differ from the Japanese language in regards to how the proverbs are worded. Further, cultural markers could only be found in one example in the Japanese proverbs.

Wilson, Freeda Catherine. "A model for translating metaphors in proverbs (French to English) : a cognitive descriptive approach." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/12923.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis presents a model for the translation of proverbs which is multidisciplinary in that it draws on an analysis of theories of metaphor, connotations, context and translation. The culmination of various viewpoints, such as those of cognitive science, translation, semiotics, and comparative linguistics substantiates, in conjunction with the support of a detailed analysis of French and English proverb translations, that translation is a multidisciplinary process, and that a multidisciplinary viewpoint is necessary for the understanding of the translation process. The diversity of premises included in this thesis offer insight into various aspects of translation. Each premise relies on its own area of expertise and jointly they form an overall process that represents the translation of proverbs from French to English. A concept, as well as its components, must be translated in the translational process, including, but not limited to, the message, meaning(s), connotations and linguistic structure of the original text, as well as the information derived from sources external to the linguistic structure, such as information located in the text or in the readerřs own knowledge of the world. This paper proceeds with a methodological progression through seminal theories, beginning with metaphors and followed by proverbs, translation and comparative linguistics, and concludes with a comprehensive examination of a corpus of French and English proverb translations. Fundamental to the entire translation process is that translation is a cognitive activity, involving multiple processes that are sequential, simultaneous and interdependent. Therefore, the translation model is composed of two levels, how translation occurs and what occurs, as the processes and methods are two different, yet simultaneous, aspects of the translation model. Proverbs were chosen as the corpus and focus of this thesis due to their intensively cultural and metaphoric nature, as well as their received translation pairings. My thesis will also demonstrate that proverbs offer a vast and reliable source of French to English translations, through their use in demonstrating that a model for the translation of metaphors in proverbs is possible.

Othman, Othman Ahmed Omran. "An analysis of the role of micro and macro levels in rendering some standard Arabic proverbs into English." Thesis, University of Leeds, 2013. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/4873/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis was inspired by my MA Dissertation back in (2007). This dissertation dealt with 'situationality'. After a couple of years, there was a need to explore other aspects of translation. This study investigates the role of micro and macro levels in the translation of a sample of Modern Standard Arabic proverbs into English. These proverbs may not be understood if a translation focuses on the micro level, i.e. the surface features of the proverbs such as semantics, syntax and style, without taking into account the macro level, i.e. the socio-cultural context for the proverbs. Therefore, the solution suggested in this study is to translate their micro levels as well as their macro surroundings in order to convey their meaning to speakers of English. This study had two main aims: to assess students’ ability to translate the selected proverbs and to convey the meanings of these proverbs to native English speakers. To achieve these aims, twenty Modern Standard Arabic proverbs were selected on the grounds that they deal with various subjects and are widely used in Arab culture. A randomly chosen sample of fourth-year students from the Department of English at Benghazi University were asked to translate these proverbs into English and their translations were then analysed at micro and macro levels. At the micro level, three main types of errors were identified: semantic, syntactic and stylistic. The study found that most of the students in the sample faced difficulties when asked to translate proverbs from their mother tongue into English. The use of error analysis provided possible solutions and suggestions for assessing the students’ requirements and needs in a particular training situation in terms of the real text being translated. During this analysis, deficiencies in translation skills were identified and evaluated, and appropriate translations by native English speakers were provided to show alternative translations of these proverbs. At the macro level, a number of problems relating to student translations of the context of the proverbs were identified. The study recommends that translation of this feature is necessary in order to convey their meaning to English native speakers. The study shows that when the situation and context for a proverb are not provided, it becomes meaningless and difficult to comprehend.

Abstract:

This essay was underpinned by the premise that the proverb plays an important role in language teaching as a part of gaining cultural knowledge, metaphorical understanding and communicative competence. The purpose with this essay was to examine whether proverbs are a part of the EFL (English as Foreign Language) teaching in the county of Jönköping, Sweden. The investigation focused on the occurrence of proverbs in eleven textbooks for the English A- and B-courses, and on the attitudes toward using prov-erbs in the teaching among nineteen teachers at seven upper secondary schools. Descriptive methods were used, which combined quantitative and qualitative approaches, i.e. content analysis and close read-ing of the textbooks and a questionnaire answered by the teachers.

The result showed that proverbs are a small part of the EFL teaching regarding both the textbooks and the use in the classroom by the teachers. Proverbs are mainly used as bases for discussions in the text-books, and by the teachers as expressions to explain, to discuss the meaning and to compare to the Swedish equivalents. There is a positive attitude toward using proverbs and the result showed awareness among the teachers regarding proverbs as a part of the language and the culture as well as for communi-cation. The conclusion of the result was that the knowledge has to increase among educators and text-book authors about how proverbs can be used as effective devices and tools, not only as common ex-pressions, in every area of language teaching.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates future English teachers&rsquo
experiences of learning English proverbs in Anatolian Teacher Training High Schools (ATTHS) in Turkey. In order to reveal the situation about proverb teaching in English language classrooms in ATTHS, students&rsquo
opinions are sought and coursebooks are analysed. In doing this, this study aims to find out EFL teacher trainees&rsquo
attitudes towards learning and teaching English proverbs, their conceptualization of proverbs, their thoughts about their knowledge and use of English proverbs, and perceptions about how sufficiently their English teachers and coursebooks at high school taught them English proverbs. This study also aims to uncover how the English coursebooks they used in ATTHS teach proverbs. To achieve these aims, a questionnaire is administered to 187 freshman ELT students
a semi-structured interview is conducted with volunteers and the coursebooks used by the majority are examined using an analysis form and a checklist. As a result, it is found that those teacher trainees have positive attitudes towards learning and teaching English proverbs, think that they do not have enough knowledge of English proverbs and that their English teachers and coursebooks did not teach proverbs sufficiently. Moreover, the participants&rsquo
conceptualization of proverbs reflects traditional definitions. Besides, coursebook analysis reveals that while the examined local coursebooks contain almost no proverbs at all, the analysed international coursebooks include a relatively bigger number of proverbs. However, except for some of the semantic and cultural aspects of proverbs, there is hardly any explicit reference to other aspects of proverbs in all the coursebooks examined.

Abstract:
This dissertation research is devoted to the comparative analysis of the representation of the dual concepts "life" and "death" in the paremiological fund of the English and Russian languages. The work is carried out in line with current research in the field of cognitive linguistics and linguoculturology. Russian and English proverbs and sayings representing the concepts "life" and "death" are the main subject of the study, and the main research material is the proverbs and sayings of the English and Russian languages that represent the concepts "life" and "death". As a result of semantic analysis of paremiological units, cognitive features of the dual concepts "life" and "death" in the paremiological fund of English and Russian languages were formulated, most of which are national-specific, i.e. available only in one of the studied paremiological funds. As a result of the comparative analysis, cultural and national features and differences in the paremiological fund of the English and Russian languages were identified, namely, those cognitive features of the dual concepts "life" and "death " that were identified only in one language and thus are distinctive only for one of the analyzed linguistic cultures.

In Taiwan, Taiwanese is the native language of the immigrants originally from the south-eastern provinces of China during the 17th century. Proverbs are the accumulation of life experience and traditional cultural background of a certain group of people (陳昌閔,2001;黃飛龍,2001;劉育青,2009). The purposes of this study is to, first, analyze the English translation of 30 common Taiwanese proverbs based on Chen's (1997) translation theory: literal translation, adaptation, semantic translation, literal & semantic translation and annotation; second, investigate the differences between these Taiwanese proverbs and the given parallel English proverbs. A total of 150 Taiwanese college students answered a questionnaire to examine what Taiwanese proverbs familiar to them. In addition, an American translator who has lived in Taiwan for over nine years and can speak fluent Mandarin Chinese was requested to translate the Taiwanese proverbs into English and provide corresponding English proverbs. The findings show that the strategy adopted most often by the translator is literal translation, which remains the original source text and directly conveys the meanings of the Taiwanese proverbs. Furthermore, different from the given English proverbs, the Taiwanese proverbs contain lots of metaphors concerning things that happen around Taiwanese life styles and customs. Hopefully, this study can help both locals and foreigners to appreciate the meanings of Taiwanese proverbs and promote our unique Taiwanese culture to the world.

ŠULCOVÁ, Tetyana. "A Comparative Study of English, Russian and Czech Proverbs." Master's thesis, 2019. http://www.nusl.cz/ntk/nusl-396503.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis deals with the usage of proverbs in contemporary language and compares English, Russian and Czech proverbs. The theoretical part explains the differences in terminology between idiomatics and phraseology, defines phraseology and incorporates proverbs into the field of paremiology together with an explanation of its subject of study and paremiographic activities. Further on, the proverbs themselves are described and their individual types and subtypes are set apart. Attention is also paid to their origin and meaning in the past and today. The practical part examines concrete proverbs of three languages. For the purpose of comparative study, four types of equivalence are established and on this basis, selected proverbs are compared and contrasted. The analysed proverbs are further examined from grammatical and semantic perspectives. The geographical viewpoint is also taken into account because it is evident that proverbs of the individual languages can differ due to the different locations of the given countries.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the vast volumes of English proverbs and apply them to teach English as a second /foreign language. Proverbs, characteristic for their easily -memorized forms, wisdom, and popularity, could be traced back to thousands of years ago both in China and in the west. Proverbs are abundant sources for teachers to teach language, culture and literature in second/foreign language classrooms. Using proverbs properly will add flavor to our language. The more students read and appreciate proverbs, the more knowledgeable they may become in their study of the English language. The truth revealed in proverbs is not the only point of interest; proverbs are thought of as cultural products that enable better understanding of cross-cultural beliefs and behaviors (Hess, 1999). The proverb that “If the bird hadn’t sung, it wouldn’t have been shot,” reveals one of the Japanese traditional values: keeping silent. Since most of the traceable proverbs have roots in literary texts, there seems to be a close relationship between literature and proverbs. Various practical approaches of applying proverbs in language classrooms with some research will be discussed.

The present study aims to examine how education-related metaphors are represented through metaphors in Mandarin Chinese and English idioms and proverbs, and probe into the conceptual, cognitive processes and the cultural differences underlying these education metaphors. The education metaphors are identified based on Conceptual Metaphor Theory (Kovecses, 2002; Lakoff, 1993; Lakoff & Johnson, 1980) and the Network Model (Fauconnier & Turner, 1994, 2002; Kovecses, 2002). Four main philosophical differences between the education-related concept of Mandarin Chinese and that of English have been found in this study. To start with, education is conceptualized in a context of religion in both languages, while the image of a door of knowledge, which derives from a door of a temple, is solely pervasive in MANDARIN CHINESE. In addition, TEACHING IS GARDENING is the most prominent metaphor in Mandarin Chinese but not in English, 9.76% of metaphorical expression in English but 14.29%in MANDARIN CHINESE employing LEARNER IS PLANT, which implies a fact that the Chinese society or culture expects teachers to play a dominant and decisive role in the process of education and imposes a great deal of responsibility on them. Secondly, LEARNING IS JOURNEY has been founded in both languages. However, systematic structural metaphors, inclusive of KNOWLEDGE IS DESTINATION, LEARNING DIFFICULTY IS IMPEDIMENT, and LEARNING PROCESS IS MOVEMENT are utilized exclusively in Mandarin Chinese. In Chinese culture, the profound and sublime knowledge usually lies on the top of mountain or at boundless sea. Learners have to overcome the barrier encountered, such as messy grass, and climb up to pursue the distant knowledge. On the other hand, knowledge is conceptualized as experience in English. Learning from mistakes or painful experience is highlighted in English. Finally, LEARNING IS COMMODITY and LEARNER IS COMMODITY are found solely in Mandarin Chinese. As for LEARNING IS COMMODITY, the value of learning or receiving education is highlighted in Mandarin Chinese, whereas learning is conceptualized as gardening, journey, or building in English, still corresponding with the nature of learning as an event. In Chinese culture, education is considered to be a way of facilitating upward social mobility and thus achieving success. As to LEARNER IS COMMODITY, there is a belief that learners can become elites through the process of education and the importance of the elites in a sense that they will make a great contribution to the society is underscored through highlighting the preciousness of a commodity. Based on the metaphorical analysis and different perspectives taken, philosophically and traditionally ingrained concepts of education in the two cultures can be explored and explicated.

Fenn, Jessica. "Aural Literacy: Rhetorical Community and Shared Sayings in Late Medieval England." Thesis, 2012. https://doi.org/10.7916/D8N877VF.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyzes aural literacy, or learning by hearing, in late medieval English literary works by Geoffrey Chaucer, Thomas Usk, and Margery Kempe. Aural literacy enabled late medieval people to engage with the literate tradition by adopting short, formulaic phrases such as proverbs, parables, and sermon stories. These phrases, or shared sayings, became part of a common hoard of aural resources widely available to many due to the late medieval practice of reading texts aloud. Shared sayings' conventional uses joined their speakers together into rhetorical communities, or groups of people with similar ideas as to how these sayings functioned in the world. Rhetorical communities offered a platform for contested and divergent ways of speaking that threatened these conventional uses, as late medieval speakers turned shared sayings to their own purposes, provoking angry resistance in their attempts to change their positions within their societies.

A Chinese-English Dictionary Hakka-Dialect (CEDH) and Dictionnaire Chinois-Francais Dialecte Hac-ka (DCFH), written by missionaries in late Ching Dynasty for convenience of evangelization in Hakka areas of Canton province, contain an abundant number of Hakka ancient proverbs which are worth our studying. Based on Diachronic Comparative Method, the essay contrasts Hakka animal proverbs in CEDH and DCFH and those in contemporary proverb collections to explore their meanings and how they have transformed. The essay is composed of five chapters, with the first Chapter Introduction and the Fifth Chapter Conclusion. The key points of the other chapters are described briefly as follows. The Second Chapter deals with the classification of the animal proverbs in CEDH and DCFH. All the entries in these two dictionaries related to the animals are classified into beasts, birds, and fish and insects, which are further subdivided into certain minor categories with the total 196 entries. Chapter Three mainly focuses on the meaning of the Hakka animal proverbs. All the 196 entries at hand are analyzed to get their core meaning. Through the discussion, it is found that images of animals are employed figuratively in most of the Hakka animal proverbs to explicate the philosophy of life. In other words, they are mostly the “social proverbs” which convey social experiences, with few “natural proverbs” offering knowledge about nature. The Fourth Chapter elaborates the transformational rules of Hakka animal proverbs. In form, they tend to evolve from “short to longer,” while from “limited to richer” in meaning. As for the factors that triggered the transformation, on the one hand, the change is believed to have a bearing with the passage of time, distinctive areas, and interpersonal spread. On the other hand, it has something to do with the flexibility of the proverb itself.

Roscoe, Brett. "Sagacious Liminality: The Boundaries of Wisdom in Old English and Old Norse-Icelandic Literature." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1974/12183.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the relationship between wisdom and identity in Old English and Old Norse-Icelandic literature. At present, the study of medieval wisdom is largely tangential to the study of proverbs and maxims. This dissertation makes wisdom its primary object of study; it sees wisdom not just as a literary category, but also as a cultural discourse found in texts not usually included in the wisdom canon. I therefore examine both wisdom literature and wisdom in literature. The central characteristic of wisdom, I argue, is its liminality. The biblical question “Where is wisdom to be found?” is difficult to answer because of wisdom’s in-between-ness: it is ever between individuals, communities, and times (Job 28:12 Douay-Rheims). As a liminal discourse, wisdom both grounds and problematizes identity in Old English and Old Norse-Icelandic literature. After a preliminary chapter that defines key terms such as “wisdom” and “wisdom literature,” I examine heroic wisdom in three characters who are defined by their wise traits and skills and yet who are ultimately betrayed by wisdom to death or exile. The implications of this problematic relation to wisdom are then examined in the next chapter, which analyzes the composition of wisdom in proverb poems. Like the wise hero, the poets represented in these poems blend their own voices with the voice of community, demonstrating that identity is open and therefore in need of constant revision. Next I examine how the liminality of wisdom is embodied in the figure of the wise monster, who negatively marks the boundaries of society and its desires. This then leads to a study of the reception of wisdom in chapter six, which focuses on instruction poems. Like narratives of wise monsters, these texts present lore as the nostalgic remnant of a tradition that defines identity, in this case the identity of a community. However, nostalgia assumes loss, and these texts also reveal an underlying fear that wisdom, the basis of the community’s identity, will be forgotten. Whether communal or individual, identity in this literature is both formed and threatened by liminal wisdom.
