Abstract:
This article discusses the meaning and types of English slangs found in the Ant Man Movie directed by Peyton Reed, produced by Wald Disney Studios Motion Pictures, 2015. The main object of the research was to find out themeaning of English slangs found in the Ant Man Movie and classify themdepending on its characteristics of English Slangs types. This research used a qualitative method. In Classifying the English Slangs, researchers used theory from Coleman that classifying English slangs into seven; English Slang changes in meaning, English Slang changes in function, English Slang change in form, English Slang created by abbreviation, English Slangchanges in spelling, Slangs loans and Slangs from imitating sound. Through this research, researchers found forty English Slangs in the Ant Man Movie; fourteen English Slangs created by changes in meaning, two English Slangs created by changes in, twelve English Slangs created by changes, five English Slangs created by abbreviation, seven English Slangs created bychanges in spelling, four English Slangs loans, and two English Slangs are from sound. English slangs are non-register language. It is more acceptable in daily life because it is fresher and simple in use.

Abstract:
This research discussed about the slang words in Gap Year movie series and the word formation of the slang words which were found in the movie series. Slang itself was used by certain group or community, which could be produced by compounding, affixation, truncation, conversion, blending, neologism, etymology, borrowing, coinage, and multiple processes. This research used a qualitative method. In this research, the data were collected from Gap Year movie series in the form of British slangs.Then the data were checked by using dictionary, Oxford English Dictionaries Online and Etymology dictionaries online to make sure whether the data belonged to slang words or not and also to check the origin of the words. The data were also analyzed based on Plag and Yule’s theories in terms of etymology, borrowing, coinage, and multiple processes. After collecting the data, there were 30 slang words found in this movie series. The result of the research showed that the slangs were formed through compounding (8 data), affixation (5 data), truncation (1 data), blending (2 data), etymology (9 data), borrowing (1 data), coinage (2 data), and multiple process (2 data). Therefore, the most used of word formation process was etymology.

This article is devoted to the analysis of such linguistic phenomenon as youth slang. The article provides the definition of “slang”. The contribution of linguists who studied this linguistic phenomenon is taken into account. The age limits of people who use slang expressions are determined. The possible reasons for the use of slang are listed. Dependence of the use of slang on a hobby and preferences of the owner is revealed. Examples of slang are given. Identified linguistic tendency, consisting in the borrowing of many fishing slang from the English language.

Abstract:
The article deals with the peculiarities of gaming slang in the English language. Its goal is to describe gaming slang, to determine the ways of its formation, and to form the bases for the classifications of gaming slang. It also aims to analyze the problem of translating English gaming slang into Ukrainian, as the issue of gaming slang is not well-studied in linguistics. The connections of gaming slang with Internet, computer and more general youth slang are considered, mentioning their interrelations. The linguistic processes that are used in the formation of English gaming slang are determined, including the employment of metaphor and metonymy, the use of acronyms, abbreviations, clippings and portmanteau words. The following classifications are offered: classification by game genre, by number of players, and by topic of slang units. Every game genre brings its own features into the slang, and so does the number of players, since gaming slang is more actively used in multiplayer games. The authors suggest that the classification by topic should be developed for each genre separately, since the genre influences the gaming process and therefore generates special thematic categories of slang, such as words for the game mechanics, characters etc. The authors mention that English gaming slang is a significant translation problem, since this kind of slang is underdeveloped in the Ukrainian language.

Abstract:
English slang is often used in informal communication. The purposes of this study are to find out the reason of using English slang, how students acquire English slang, and what kind of slang that they mostly use. This study uses qualitative method with the paradigm of experimental design to obtain quantitative data which are then analyzed using interpretative analysis. To collect the data, writers distributed questionnaire to 30 respondents randomly. The findings show that more than half of the respondents say that the reason behind the usage of English slang words is to cut down the time when talking, texting, or tweeting. TV and film are the most frequently used source for acquiring English slang words. The type of slang word which is most frequently used by the respondents is acronym. The result of the analysis also shows that although all respondents say that they know and think English slang words are interesting, more than a half of respondents say that they seldom use English slang words in communication. They still use standard words in informal communication. It is also found that English slang words that they acquire are not many. When they were ordered to write other English slang words they know and use, many respondents answered just one or two words; and even three respondents wrote nothing.

This study aimed to find out whether using English Slang Words affects students’ speaking skill of the 2018/2019 tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Hinai Kabupaten Langkat. In this study, using English slang words as the independent variable (X) and students’ speaking skill as the dependent variable (Y), with the hypothesis: using English slang words significantly affects students’ speaking skill of the 2018/2019 tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Hinai Kabupaten Langkat . The population of this study was the 2018/2019 tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Hinai Kabupaten Langkat. Which consisted of 154 students. The sample was taken buy using cluster random sampling, that consist of 81 students. Then, the sample was divided into two groups, the group taught by using English slang words was as the experimental group and the group taught without Englih slang words was as the control group. The writer used interview test as the instrument of collecting data. The data was analyzed by using t-test formula. Based on the data analysis, it was found that the value of t-observed (t0) was higher than the value of t-table, (tobserved = 7,47 > ttable = 2,00). Therefore, the hypothesis proposed by the writer was accepted. In the other words, using English Slang Words significantly affects the students’ speaking skill of the 2018/2019 tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Hinai Kabupaten Langkat.Keywords: English slang words, speaking skill

Slang is the use of highly informal words and expressions that are not considered standard in the speaker's dialect or language. Slang is very often colloquial: the language and dialect tend to be specific to a particular territory. Slang is a central part of young generation's experience, but contrary to many adults perception of slang as more or less uniform youth language The social meaning of slang is as variable as the teenagers who use it. In short, slang is an integral part of teenage communication. It gives them an identity of youth style of expression. Though slangs are language and culture specific, but they are often transmitted from one culture and language to another. Recent electronic communications contribute a lot in this process. The aim of this study was to show that if Malaysian youth use English slang in their language. The two major objectives were: 1. to illustrate if Malaysian youth are familiar with slang. 2. To examine what kind of slang they use more in compare with other kinds of slang. A pilot-test consists of 20 slang items was administered to 60 students. The respondents were in final semester of bachelor of English language at UPM. The data obtained from the study was coded and analyzed using the statistical package for social sciences (spss). The analyzing of data showed that the internet slang, abbreviations slang, and movie slang are used frequently by youth generation. It seems that they are familiar with these sorts of slang. The reasons can be because of using internet a lot nowadays, another reason can be media, which has the most important role in this case.

There are several varieties of English where rhyming slang is or has been a productive source of new words. However, its incidence in some Englishes still remains, by and large,terra incognitafor slang lexicographers and linguists alike. Based on a number of written sources and oral transcripts, this article surveys the origins and development of rhyming slang in Ireland, its most outstanding characteristics and its productivity throughout the 20th century down to the present. In order to illustrate the significance and creative potential of this category of word-formation in Irish English, the final part of the article offers a glossary of Irish rhyming slang, including many terms which are not recorded in the standard slang dictionaries.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to raise awareness of the significance of slang in educating well-rounded EFL learners. The study, first, uncovers the most salient features of slang, distinguishing it from jargon, argot, cant, etc. It also discusses the reasons why slang springs to life; the users of slang and functions it performs, as well as the word-formation processes employed in its creation.The paper further investigates the familiarity of Macedonian undergraduate students of English with currently relevant English and American slang, the main hypothesis being that they lack knowledge of slang due to insufficient exposure and instruction. The instruments used are a questionnaire and a quiz comprising 60 slang terms, intended to inspect informants’ knowledge of slang.The results obtained from this research confirm that slang is disregarded in EFL acquisition, and that no steady progress is made in the students’ knowledge of slang in the course of their university studies.

This paper focuses on the analysis of translation strategies of slang language as employed in the movie entitled “The Social Network”. This paper analyzes the translation strategies of the slang language from English into Indonesia from the movie entitled “The Social Network”. Baker’s translation strategies were used in this paper in order to analyze the data of this paper. The study findings reveal that there are 30 slang words used in this movie, and the subtitler adopted five translation strategies by Baker for translating the slang words in this movie. The analysis also reveals that most of the slang words in the movie have related words with the target language. There are no English slang words that were translated into Indonesia slang words in the movie. The subtitler mostly used the strategies for translating the English slang words into Indonesian words that have a similar expressive meaning. It can be interpreted as a result of the different culture of both countries that makes different slang words.

Even the most cursory browse through any slang dictionary will immediately reveal that rhyming slang is a highly productive category of word-formation in contemporary British and Australian English. However, because of the inextricable difficulty in tracking what is essentially an oral (and often improvisational) phenomenon, dictionaries have typically overlooked rhyming slang items whose use is restricted to specific geographical areas, especially in Ireland and Scotland. Conceived as a sequel and companion piece to a previous study on Scottish rhyming slang by this author (Lillo 2004b), this article examines the way rhyming slang has thrived in Scotland over the past few years, thereby providing interesting insights into its role in the articulation of Scottish identity and its spread and growth around the anglophone world. While Scottish rhyming slang shows largely the same morphological characteristics as other rhyming slangs, its home-grown flavour is apparent in a significant proportion of its repertoire, which serves as a real marker of national identity and pride among Scots. The final section of the article presents a glossary of Scottish rhyming slang made up for the most part of previously unrecorded items collected by the author.

Abstract:
The objectives of the study to find out the types of English slang words used and strategies in translating slang words from English to Bahasa uttered in “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” movie. The data were collected using the theory of Partridge and Bloomfield, and theories of translation strategies by Mona Baker. The result showed that there were 61 slang words were found in this movie. They were classified into 7 types of slang words namely cockney slang, public house slang, workmen’s slang, slang in theater, slang in art, slang in public school and university, and society slang. Society slang is the utmost type of slang used in the movie and other pop cultures. The translation strategies used were translation by more general word, translation by more neutral/ less expressive, translation by paraphrase using the related word, paraphrase using the unrelated word, translation using loan word, cultural substitution, translation by omission, and translation by illustration. In conclusion, the researcher mostly used translation strategy named translation by a more general word in this research which has been determined by analyzing each source of data.

The knowledge of Internet slang is essential for English language learners who aim to achieve native-like fluency. This study investigated the familiarity of internet slang among EFL female learners in Saudi Arabia. The study aimed explicitly to examine to what extent EFL female learners are familiar with the Internet slang? Besides, what does the students' knowledge of slang reflect? To achieve these objectives, a total of 71 Saudi female undergraduate English majors at Unaizah College of Sciences and Arts participated in the study. The students were given a test of Internet slang. The data were analyzed through SPSS. The study results demonstrated that the learners' knowledge of Internet slang was moderately limited, and they are not familiar with internet slang. The results also revealed that some acronyms and abbreviations are popular among learners because of the learners' exposure to social media. In light of these results, recommendations are presented.

Abstract:
This study deals with the differences between Black English and White American English based on the slang expressions as found in 10 songs by black and white rappers taken from YouTube videos. The analysis shows that the 5 songs by white rappers contain 394 sentences as compared with those of black rappers which is 493 sentences. The slang expressions are identified based on the existing theory and then they are categorized into the semantic change and morphological process or formation of the expressions. It was found that there were more slang expressions in the Black English (39.95%) as compared with that of the White English (25.88%).There are more morphological processes in the black American English (6 of 8 types) compared with those of white American English (4 out of 8 types). The missing processes in black American English are borrowing and compounding whereas in the white American English are acronym, borrowing, backformation and conversion. The major or dominant processes in white American English are clipping (43.24%) and invention (41.44%) whereas in the black American English are clipping (30.02%) and invention (22.31%). At first sight it is difficult to understand the contents of the songs without referring to the explanations on the background and cultural values of the singers. The slang expressions which include a word, a phrase or a sentence contain the themes about sex, drugs and racialism among the black people in the United States. It is suggested that students who wanted to broaden their knowledge about English and its varieties should learn more about Black English. The article analyses phonetic and graphic variations of majority of English borrowings in Russian youth slang, caused by the coexistence of two different methods of recording English borrowings with the letters of Russian alphabet. The findings of the analysis prove that the dominant way of transferring English borrowings into Russian slang corresponds with the slang’s tendency to show the russified version of English pronunciation in a written form.

Abstract:
The article considers the slang of the fashion industry, systemization of slang units by speakers, as well as the main difficulties in translating English fashion slang into Ukrainian. It turns out that the vocabulary of fashion industry slang is enriched in epoch-making moments, important for the state as a reaction to turning points in history and to the emergence of new social phenomena. The article proves that fashion slang unites a large number of social groups: people working in the fashion industry, who create trends and fashionable novelties; fashion distributors and fashion buyers and even forms a new social group around them ‒ hypebeasts. The authors of the article analyse the slang of the fashion world through the prism of its interdependence and interaction with social networks and the Internet as a communicative space. Such methods of word formation of fashion slang units as metaphorization, word formation, appearance of telescopies have been considered in this scientific article. The presented research paper proposes to classify fashion slang by different groups of people who are somehow related to fashion, and thus cause the emergence of new slang units, forming their own kind of fashion slang, taking into account the peculiarities of their activities. It is emphasized that the basis for the formation of new slang of the fashion industry is the slang of young people mad about fashion, who build their own cult around it. The article also considers the most common ways of translating hypebeasts slang, such as transcoding (mixed and adaptive ones), transcription and transliteration.

Abstract:
English is absolutely crusial International language having function as one of global communication tools to connect one country to another countryOne can not be ignored that in Indonesia, English is not only International language but also expanding language influencing the citizens to mix Bahasa Indonesia and English as the slang. Nowadays teenagers use Bahasa Indonesia slang adopted by English words, phrase, and terms. This looks at the society, especially teenagers and the transition from adolescence to adulthood (12 to 23 years). This phenomenon is actually very unique which they use some English words or phrases as their Alay slang language to communicate. It is such a case that should be researched by researcher and many people caring about Bahasa Indonesia and the way English insert in that slang. The cause and the use of it is the main case of that is actually the focus of research.This study uses a qualitative approach design; ethnography research. A qualitative approach design using data derivedfrom documents. While the form of data collecting technique is content analysis of secondary text or visual material where the researcher analyzes the content of the documents grabbed, describe, interprete, determine the settings, last is report reflexively. The data is taken from documents; screenshot of conversations of subjects in Blackberry Messenger with several themes where the English-language Alay language is usually used ie the problem of romance and vacation.

Abstract:
This research focuses on translation strategies and techniques for rendering slang in Quentin Tarantino’s films “Pulp Fiction” and “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. The material of the research was the original scripts for the films and their translations into Ukrainian. Defining translation strategies when transferring English slang into Ukrainian involved: frequency analysis of the slang words; semantic decomposition of the slang words to establish their meanings; and comparison of the words to reveal consistent patterns of translating English slang into Ukrainian. Slang words fucking, fuck, shit, goddamn, motherfucker make up 3.6% of the total wordcount in “Pulp Fiction” and 1.33% in “Once Upon a Time in… Hollywood”. They mainly function as exclamations, nominations for something inferior, as euphony, or to denote a despicable adversary. Literal translation has been registered in 31.73% in “Pulp Fiction” and 30.98% in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, explicitation (6.07% and 26.03%,) substitution (39.75% and 48.8%). Slang words were neutralised in 15.45% and 16.8%, omitted in 21.34% and 21.72%. The study hypothesises that the techniques involved show a correlation between the semantic transparency of the slang word and the strategy chosen.

Abstract:
The article deals with the peculiarities of the English loans use in the modern Ukrainian youth slang. The tendencies of the Ukrainian language development at the beginning of the XXI century, the role of the English loanwords in the process of language globalisation are analysed. Changes in any language are activated by social processes. Modern conditions of the society development are a potential catalyst for the natural language changes, which accelerate their dynamics and make them more significant and noticeable. The youth slang is a certain language layer, which reflects its innovations. The article represents a comprehensive description of the youth slang, as one of the subsystems of the modern Ukrainian languge, the reasons of its occurrence and use. The youth slang is an integral part of any language that is considered to be more comprehensive and up-to-date. The paper presents the results of sociolinguistic research in order to identify the pecularities of the loanwords use. Fifty young people at the age of 16-23 have taken part in the experiment to determine the tendency of the English loanwords use. They have participated in a survey, where they had to determine the frequency of the English loanwords use, which have and do not have one-word equivalents in the Ukrainian language. The results have shown that the most part of the respondents use loanwords in their speech. It can be explained by linguistic and extralinguistic factors. The main hypothesis is the statement about the internationalisation of the English language in the modern language space. The results of the study have confirmed this position. The English loanwords are very popular with the youth. Most of them do not have the one-word Ukrainian equivalents and their use can be explained by the factor of language resources economy. However the significant tendency is that the English loanwords are frequently used in the Ukrainian slang. This process is connected with the phenomena of the English language globalisation.

The aim of this paper is threefold: first, to introduce the topic of youth slang by giving an overview of its main characteristics; second, to show the different word-formation processes that slang has to make the speaker’s message more expressive; and third, to study the extent to which these two aspects are reflected in two corpora representing London and Madrid youth language. The present study is based, primarily, on an inventory of the top ten ‘proper’ and ‘dirty’ slang words in each language variety with particular emphasis on the speakers’ age and gender, and, secondarily, on the entire corpus data, which showed great agreement with the features outlined in the overview of the main characteristics of youth slang, while the most obvious word-formation mechanisms turned out to be related to change of form and change of meaning.

The article establishes the linguacultural gender specifics of the British song slang. All languages are constantly changing, slang invades the vocabulary of people (male and female). Of research, interest is the definition of slang, its origin, the vital need for human communication. The purpose of the study is to identify the gender characteristics of British song slang. Slang as a language system of modern linguistics is considered. In the article, main features and gender characteristics of British slang are described. The authors analyze the song slang of female and male performers and compare the song slang of performers of both sexes. The methods of research are descriptive method, comparative analysis, definitional analysis, lexical and semantic analysis, lexical and grammatical analysis, stylistic analysis, interpretive analysis, quantitative analysis, involving a continuous sample. The material of the study was songs by modern British male and female performers. The theoretical significance of the study is to identify the features of modern British song slang. Research results contribute to the development of lexicology and stylistics of the English language, to contrastive linguistics, linguoculturology. The establishment of the gender specificity of British musical slang contributes to the development of linguistic gender studies. The practical application of the research results is revealed in the possibility of teaching courses in English lexicology, stylistics, and gender linguistics, as well as compiling a linguistic dictionary of modern musical culture.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the names of music stars in Russian youth slang. The number of English borrowings, which appear in the Russian youth’s language, is growing rapidly. Russian youngsters are open for western music. The paper presents the processes of implementation of English names into Russian slang. The studied material shows how English words are transformed to adjust to Russian phonetics. The author of this paper proves that young people do not copy foreign words and phrases, but treat them as a basis for further modifications. They play with foreign words in order to adjust them to Russian phonetics and add humour which is a characteristic feature of youth slang.

Mobile phone no doubt has become everyone’s personal companion. It finds close companionship among the youths. Mobile phone SMS slang has adversely affected students’ ability to write proper English grammar, as they find it a very convenient and economic way of communication. This work presents a needs assessment survey in which over 90% of respondents expressed desire to have an application that converts SMS slang. It also shows the design and implementation of SMS slang to English converter for Android devices. Results show a compression rate of over forty percent, therefore reducing the cost of the SMS, time and bandwidth.

Slang is an essential element of culture. Learning a foreign language is inextricably linked with the study of the culture of native speakers. Teaching slang, idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs in foreign language classes contributes to the students' vocabulary, understanding informal speech patterns found in media texts and everyday communication with native speakers, developing speaking and listening skills. As a rule, at a foreign language class, students improve their listening, reading, speaking and writing skills through various study materials. Even with these skills, you can fail to communicate with native speakers, read magazines, watch television programmes and travel to foreign countries. The paper discusses the possibility of teaching slang, idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs in a foreign language class at a technical university. To substantiate the need to study slang, idiomatic expressions and phrasal verbs, the authors attempted to find out how the youth slang is formed and the reasons for its functioning. Youth slang in modern Russian and English languages has been compared and analyzed.

Based on the research result, there are 8 slang words or phrases in the movie of “The Blind Side”, the slang is divided into four categories: (1) 2 slang words or phrases as the neutral syntactic level; (2) 4 slang words or phrases as typical informal situations and (3) 2 slang words or phrases as creative.

AbstractThe Use Transgender Slangs in Barabai City. This study aims to describe and explain theuse of transgender slangs in the city of Barabai as well as to the describe and explain thefrom of the word formations in the use of transgender slangs in the city of Barabai. Thisresearch uses descriptive qualitative research method with sociolinguistic approach. Thedata of this research is from the speeches of the transgender people, so the data source isthe transgender people. Data collection was done by observation technique, interviewtechnique, recording technique, and technique of renotetaking. The data then weretranscribed, classified, presented and concluded. The instrument of this research is a tablethat classifies data in accordance with the types of word forms, namely the forms of theword based and the word formations. The results of this study indicate that there are 201words of the transgender slangs used in 62 discourse fragments analyzed which arecreated from the transgender language itself or from the word formations which endingsconsist of 12 categories and the formations are from the English language. The meaningsof these words have various meanings depending on the conversations carried out bytransgender people, for example: one word has many meanings and it depends on thecontents of the conversations they have. From the 60 discourse conversations, there are270 uses of slang words in the form of affixation process,i.e. prefixes, infixes (insertion),suffixes or confixes (prefix and suffix) and reduplication process.Key words: slang, transvestite, wordAbstrakPenggunaan Bahasa Slang Waria di Kota Barabai. Penelitian ini bertujuan untukmendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan penggunaan kosakata bahasa slang waria di kotaBarabai serta mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan wujud kata bentukan dalam penggunaanbahasa slang waria di kota Barabai. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian metodedeskriptif kualitatif dengan pendekatan sosiolinguistik. Data penelitian ini adalah darituturan para waria dan sumber datanya dari para waria. Pengumpulan data dilakukandengan cara teknik observasi, teknik wawancara, teknik rekaman, dan teknik catat. Dataitu lalu mentranskripsikan, mengklasifikasi, menyajikan serta menyimpulkan. Instrumenpenelitian ini berupa tabel yang mengklasifikasikan data sesuai dengan jenis wujud kata,yaitu wujud kata dasar dan kata bentukan. Hasil Penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwapenggunaan kosakata bahasa slang yang digunakan dari 62 penggalan wacana yang telahdianalisis terdapat 201 kosakata yang tercipta dari bahasa waria itu sendiri maupun daritata bentukan kata yang berakhiran yang terdiri dari 12 kategori dan tata bentukan daribahasa Inggris. Makna dari kata-kata tersebut mempunyai berbagai arti tergantung dari16percakapan yang dilakukan para waria, misalnya dari satu kata mempunyai banyak artidan itu tergantung pada isi pembicaraan atau percakapan yang mereka lakukan. The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English (NPD) maintains the tradition impressively, enhanced by a more conventional approach to citing sources, a broader focus to include examples of colloquial and vernacular vocabulary worldwide and prominence given to usage since 1945. A thousand new entries from the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, South Africa, Ireland and the Caribbean, and increased representation of the language of social media, document linguistic innovation and/or reflect more sophisticated lexical data capture since the previous print edition of 2006. The non-standard vocabulary of the English language has always been an interesting area of research. The 20th century saw an increase in this interest. Non-standard words and phrases started finding their ways into dictionaries, linguistic journals and even daily newspapers. However, it is still difficult to draw a strict distinction between the standard and non-standard vocabulary, since, as is known, language undergoes constant development. As a result, the same word that used to be considered as non-standard about 20 years ago, can be viewed as quite standard nowadays. Slang is a non-standard form of English. It is a lexical novelty in a certain cultural environment. It is equally existent in all languages and cultures. Many Indo-European languages are rich in slang words and phrases.

Underpinned by a postmodern perspective of (teacher) identity, which characterizes it as unstable, multifaceted, unfinished, complex, dynamic, fluid, constructed in relation with others (Bauman, 2005; Bohn, 2005; Hall, 2006; Beijaard et al., 2011 among others), this qualitative research aims at exploring English language teachers’ identities concerning their knowledge of slang. For this purpose, a semi-structured, audio-recorded interview was conducted with three English teachers, from the three main language institutes in Cornelio Procópio, state of Paraná. Results reveal that on the one hand, teachers consider themselves to be fluent in English and confident of their language and teaching skills; on the other, they consider their knowledge of slang to be somewhat limited. Additionally, geographical boundaries are perceived as a hindrance to address such topic in class.

Abstract:
Rhyming slang (RS) sprang to life in mid-19th century London when it was first recorded by Ducange Anglicus (1857) together with other unusual forms of slang, such as back slang and Polari. In the period of extensive British emigration to the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, this special type of lexis was also carried around the world — though in much less regular distribution than might have been expected on the basis of shared socioeconomic colonial histories. Three types of development were possible: 1. individual RS items might survive (and possibly acquire new meanings); 2. they might die out, leaving a historical record of their extraterritorial existence at best; 3. they might prompt local fashions, imitating the pattern but creating new words. The phenomenon of RS has found various references in books on national Englishes (such as those by Baker (1970), but significantly less so in Ramson (1966) and Mencken (1977)); however, it has never been explored on a contrastive level. Such an approach has become more feasible today now that the set of historical dictionaries of English is complete following the publication of the works edited by Silva (1996), Ramson (1988) and Orsman (1997) — even though slang is badly documented, since it was not always considered worthy of inclusion in general dictionaries.
