Abstract:
<span>Indonesian movies make foreigners interested to watch it. English subtitle is the solution to make Indonesian movies worldwide. Subtitle’s strategies to make good subtitle is very important to make clear subtitle. The objective of the research are to identify subtitling strategies subtitle used in translating The Raid 2 movie and to describe the subtitling clarity of The Raid 2 movie’s English subtitle. The research method used is descriptive approach. The data are required from three source, they are the script of The Raid 2 movie, the reader evaluation and the expert evaluation. This research uses documentation as the technique of collecting data. The researchers use data, investigator, and theory triangulation to make this research can be trusted. The results of this research show that: (1) there are 11 strategies that subtitle used in translating The Raid 2 movie; (2) the clarity of subtitle in The Raid 2 movie is high. The percentage of subtitling clarity from respondents is 91, 02%. The researchers obtain 41 subtitles included into lowest score, 154 subtitles included into medium score, and 681 subtitles included into high score.</span>

Abstract This study investigates the linguistic dimensions of the subtitling of English movies into Chinese. The data derive from literature analysis, interviews with experienced subtitlers and administrators of translation agencies, my self-analysis as an experienced subtitler, and an analysis of four English movies rendered into Chinese subtitles. Grounded research methods are used to analyze the data and complete the report. The results indicate that several factors affect the quality of subtitling, including movie pirating, uncontrollable outsourced projects, economic factors, and linguistic factors. In the Chinese subtitles, swearwords are toned down, some punctuation marks and inessential information are omitted, and despite the source-language register, literary Chinese is used for brevity.

Abstract The most famous rule on the speed of subtitles is the six-second rule. In this study we investigate if the six-second rule is too slow for contemporary viewers. We also address the question of whether subtitle processing depends on the speech rate of film dialogues and on viewer’s proficiency in the language of the film soundtrack. With these questions in mind, we tested 53 Polish viewers watching English videos at two different speech rates (slow and fast), subtitled into Polish in accordance with the six-second rule. We examined participants’ reading patterns and comprehension and asked them to assess subtitle speed and the congruity of subtitles with the dialogue. Analysing people’s eye movements enabled us to measure that viewers were looking at subtitles for only about 30% of the subtitle display time. We found that the film speech rate affected comprehension: faster dialogues, implying more text condensation in subtitles, resulted in lower comprehension compared to slow speech rates. Viewers more proficient in the language of the film soundtrack spent less time gazing at subtitles than those who had only elementary knowledge of the language.

Throughout the history of language teaching, using subtitles has had their particular advocates in teaching English as a second language. This study was conducted to investigate the impacts of Persian subtitled movies on vocabulary knowledge improvement of Iranian intermediate EFL learners. To achieve this goal, out of 35 participants, 20 female learners from a language institute in Isfahan, took part in the study. Their ages were between 12 to 16 years old and they were randomly divided into two homogenous groups (controllable and uncontrollable subtitle groups) based on Oxford Placement Test (OPT). As the pretest of the study, a content specific vocabulary test was administered which consisted of 30 multiple-choice items and was developed by the present researchers. Instructional materials included 10 parts of a movie, titled ‘Tangled’ (produced in 2010). During 10 sessions of treatment, vocabularies were instructed to the participants. Experimental group was instructed watching a controllable subtitled movie (English dialogues with repeated Persian subtitles) while control group was instructed using the same audiovisual materials but without any repetition; watching an uncontrollable subtitled movie (English dialogues with unrepeated Persian subtitles). After treatment, as the posttest, the two groups were administered a test similar to the pretest and under the same conditions. Based on the findings of analysis of covariance on the pretest and posttest vocabulary test scores, the results indicated that the group using controllable Persian subtitles outperformed than the other group. Material designers and instructors can use the findings of this investigation to include movies with Persian subtitles for learners to learn more vocabulary due to the fact that these learners have learnt to appreciate the importance and the value of vocabulary, including its effectiveness in communicative tasks.

Abstract:
The present study aimed to find out the effect of watching captioned TV series on speaking accuracy of Iranian advanced English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learner. To do so, 66 advanced learners were selected out of 104 ones, using Oxford Placement Test. The researchers assigned the participants randomly into three groups, one control and two experimental, each including 22 learners. One of the experimental groups watched the series with English subtitles and the other group with Persian subtitles while the control group (CG) watched the same series without any subtitles. The form of the pre-test and post-test was semi-structured interview. Before the treatment, the participants were asked questions about friendship, similar to the theme of the series and after the treatment they were asked the same questions as the post-test. The results indicated that both English and Persian subtitling had a positive impact on the accuracy of Iranian advanced English learners. Furthermore, it was found that oral accuracy did not considerably change in the CG, but there were significant improvements in English subtitle and Persian subtitle groups in oral accuracy. Moreover, the study has insights and implications for EFL/English as second language teachers and curriculum designers. AbstractThis study investigated how semantically relevant auditory information might affect the reading of subtitles, and if such effects might be modulated by the concurrent video content. Thirty-four native Chinese speakers with English as their second language watched video with English subtitles in six conditions defined by manipulating the nature of the audio (Chinese/L1 audio vs. English/L2 audio vs. no audio) and the presence versus absence of video content. Global eye-movement analyses showed that participants tended to rely less on subtitles with Chinese or English audio than without audio, and the effects of audio were more pronounced in the presence of video presentation. Lexical processing of subtitles was not modulated by the audio. However, Chinese audio, which presumably obviated the need to read the subtitles, resulted in more superficial post-lexical processing of the subtitles relative to either the English or no audio. On the contrary, English audio accentuated post-lexical processing of the subtitles compared with Chinese audio or no audio, indicating that participants might use English audio to support subtitle reading (or vice versa) and thus engaged in deeper processing of the subtitles. These findings suggest that, in multimodal reading situations, eye movements are not only controlled by processing difficulties associated with properties of words (e.g., their frequency and length) but also guided by metacognitive strategies involved in monitoring comprehension and its online modulation by different information sources.

Abstract:
The paper examines the role of typographical devices in subtitling practices. As subtitling is significantly determined by its temporal and spatial constraints, the verbal part of a subtitle may be rather condensed and incomplete for perception, which requires additional means to modify meaning-making processes and add up information. The research gives a systematic account of typographical devices and their functions in a subtitled filmic text. The common graphical devices featured are typefaces, colour, punctuation marks, and numeric signs. The performed analysis showed that typographical devices do not only assist in dealing with technical considerations, but they may also serve as means of intersemiotic cohesion linking subtitles with visual or acoustic-or both-components of a film and enabling their functional cooperation. The drawn conclusions allow to state that graphical devices in subtitling possess such functions as they contribute to intersemiotic texture of a subtitled filmic text; help to manoeuvre in spatial and temporal circumstances; enhance reading and comprehending.

The advent and popularity of the Internet offers people all over the world easier, quicker and cheaper access to foreign movies and TV programs. The Chinese audience’s increased demand for online subtitled foreign movies and TV has brought many new changes to the traditional field of subtitle translation. This paper, by collecting and studying many cases of online subtitled English movies and TV in China, has found some changes in the main features of the subtitle translation on the Internet, such as the de-professionalization of the subtitle translators, a wider choice of translation strategies, the audience’s longing for active participation and interaction and the extended functions of subtitles. A study of these new changes is intended to be of value to the adaptation and development of film and TV translation in the new media age.

Abstract This study aims to investigate and identify the connotative equivalence of taboo words in American hip hop/musical movies and their Arabic correspondence in the subtitle/Audiovisual Translation (AVT). The sample of this study consists of English subtitles and their Arabic fansubs of three of the most profane American hip hop movies: 8 Mile, Straight Outta Compton, and All Eyez on Me. The study analyzed the data qualitatively and quantitatively. The researchers adopted Ljung’s (2011) typology of swearing to identify the connotative functions of the English taboo words and examine how the corresponding Arabic translation conforms to them. The findings revealed that the Arab fan subtitler managed to translate these tabooed terms in Arabic using certain translation techniques, viz. euphemisms and omission. These are both mainly used for the same reason, i.e. cultural constraints. The subtitler used the ‘euphemistic swearing’ technique where the word remains a swear-word but the degree of offense and insult is milder and toned down (Montagu 1967). The Arabic subtitles in the selected sample correspond to the connotative functions of English taboo words to a significant extent only when the translator used the euphemism technique. But the connotative functions misfired when the translator resorted to omission. Finally, the research provides some implications for translators when facing such hurdles in translation.

Understanding of key character attributes in foreign film may be reduced when perception is dependent on subtitles. This research aimed to validate a reception-based method for empirically measuring functional equivalence of character voice in subtitled film. Participants watched a Japanese film excerpt, with or without English subtitles, and rated their impressions of the central character (Takuji) on 16 character descriptors (8 antonym pairs), identified by the author as important for understanding Takuji. Perceptions of Takuji’s personality were compared between Japanese and English speakers in two studies (Study 1, N = 49, 28 Japanese, 21 English; Study 2, N = 53, 23 Japanese, 30 English). Both studies involved assessment of Takuji by Japanese speakers (no subtitles) and English speakers (English subtitles). Study 2 attempted to improve inter-item reliability and equivalence between languages by using more direct antonyms and longer descriptors than Study 1. Results from both studies established significant differences in character perceptions between Japanese and English viewers and confirmed the reliability of Japanese intracultural perceptions. Consistency in the loss of character voice between language groups in both studies confirmed that this approach to measuring character voice has strong potential for assessing subtitling approaches that aim to address functional equivalence in character perception.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis was to study how conversations change when they are translated for subtitles. The idea was to find out what kinds of changes occur especially in the structure of conversations and what translation strategies are used to cause the changes. The research material consisted of seven conversations from the first episode of the British television series Sherlock. The translations were from two different versions of Finnish subtitles. The chosen conversations were essential for the plot, because in them Sherlock presents the observations he made and supports his conclusions with argumentation. The conversations were divided into three phases. The first phase starts the conversation and leads to the argumentation, the middle phase encompasses the argumentation and the third phase leads away from the argumentation. The theory portion of the study covered three different areas that were utilised in analysing the translated conversations: the characteristic elements of subtitling as a form of translation, translation strategies and illocutionary acts. The conception of the constraints and conventions of subtitling helped in understanding the situation in which the conversations were translated. The translation strategies that were chosen for this study were Chesterman’s (1997) pragmatic strategies, because they were thought to be the most useful ones in translating conversations. The concept of illocutionary point from speech act theory was used to ascertain the functions that key utterances for the conversations’ structure played in the conversations. The translated conversations were analysed in terms of their different phases and the key utterances within the phases, but also in terms of other aspects. The analysis of the different phases revealed the following findings: The structurally significant conversation initiating utterance was always a directive, which was translated in the majority of cases. The utterance that initiated the argumentation phase was also always a directive, but it was omitted in about a third of the cases. Argumentation retained its structure during translation, but its coherence suffered due to the omission of connectives. Rebuttals of Sherlock’s conclusions were translated every time they occurred, but directives asking for further argumentation were sometimes omitted. The utterances in the ending phases of the conversations that referred back to the argumentation were translated every time. There were also findings relating to changes outside the structure of the conversations: Omissions lead to the lessening of coherence in the translated conversations. Moreover, the way in which the characters on screen appeared to the viewer as well as how the relationships between the characters were manifested were subject to changes when the conversations were translated. The two most actively used translation strategies that emerged were information change, which caused changes in the structure, coherence and interpersonal aspects of the conversations, and illocutionary change, which changed the form of key utterances but retained their function in the conversations. Omissions, which were mainly the result of the temporal and spatial constraints of subtitles, were the dominant contributor in the changes the conversations underwent. Some of the pragmatic translation strategies proved to be inapplicable for subtitling, because they were originally intended for literary translation
Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia, miten keskustelut muuttuvat, kun ne käännetään tekstityksessä. Tarkoituksena oli selvittää, mitä muutoksia erityisesti keskustelujen rakenteessa tapahtuu ja mitkä käännösstrategiat aiheuttivat kyseisiä muutoksia. Tutkimusmateriaalina oli seitsemän keskustelua brittiläisen Uusi Sherlock -televisiosarjan ensimmäisestä jaksosta. Tarkastelun kohteena oli jakson kaksi suomeksi tekstitettyä versiota. Valitut keskustelut olivat juonen kannalta keskeisiä, koska niissä Sherlock esittää tekemiään johtopäätöksiä ja tarjoaa niiden tueksi argumentaatiota. Keskustelut jaettiin kolmeen vaiheeseen, joista ensimmäinen aloittaa keskustelun ja johtaa argumentaatiovaiheeseen, keskimmäinen sisältää varsinaisen argumentaation, ja kolmas johtaa pois argumentaatiosta. Tutkimuksen teoriaosassa käsiteltiin kolmea eri aihealuetta, joita hyödynnettiin käännettyjen keskustelujen analysoinnissa: tekstityksen erityispiirteet kääntämisen muotona, käännösstrategiat ja puheaktit. Käsitys tekstitykseen liittyvistä rajoituksista ja konventioista auttoi ymmärtämään keskustelujen kääntämistilannetta. Tutkittaviksi käännösstrategioiksi valikoituivat Chestermanin (1997) pragmaattiset strategiat, koska niiden ajateltiin olevan hyödyllisimmät keskustelujen kääntämisessä. Puheaktiteoriasta poimittua illokutiivisen merkityksen käsitettä käytettiin määrittämään keskustelujen rakenteen kannalta keskeisten lausumien funktioita keskustelussa. Käännettyjä keskusteluja analysoitiin eri vaiheiden ja niistä esiin nousseiden keskeisten lausumien kautta, mutta myös muilta osin. Keskustelujen eri vaiheiden analysointi paljasti seuraavia tuloksia: Rakenteen kannalta keskeisen keskustelun aloittavan lausuman todettiin olevan aina direktiivi, joka käännettiin suurimmassa osassa tapauksista. Argumentaatiovaiheen aloittava lausuma, jos sellainen keskustelussa esiintyi, oli myös aina direktiivi, mutta se jätettiin pois noin kolmasosassa tapauksista. Argumentaation rakenne säilyi käännettäessä, mutta sen koherenssi kärsi sidesanojen poisjätön takia. Sherlockin päätelmien kiistämiset käännettiin aina niiden esiintyessä, mutta lisäargumentaatiota pyytävät direktiivit jätettiin joskus pois. Keskustelujen loppuvaiheessa esiintyvät argumentaatioon viittaavat lausumat käännettiin aina. Rakenteen ulkopuolisia muutoksia löytyi myös: poisjätöt johtivat koherenssin vähenemiseen käännetyissä keskusteluissa, ja myös ruudulla esiintyvien henkilöiden näyttäytyminen katsojalle sekä heidän välisten suhteiden ilmeneminen altistuivat muutoksille keskusteluja käännettäessä. Käytetyimmiksi käännösstrategioiksi nousivat informaation muutos, joka aiheutti muutoksia niin keskustelujen rakenteessa, koherenssissa kuin ihmistenvälisissä tekijöissä, ja puheaktin muutos, joka muutti keskeisten lausumien muotoa, mutta säilytti niiden funktion keskusteluissa. Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the approaches identified for the translation of Taiwanese Mandarin dialogues into English subtitles is different from those described in research studies which examined the translation of English film dialogues into Mandarin subtitles using data gathered from a Taiwanese movie entitled Cape No. 7. Taiwanese Mandarin is significantly influenced by the Tai-yu dialect, and in order to carry out the translation of Taiwanese Mandarin, it is important to deal with the functions of the dialect and related culture-specific items (CSIs). Therefore, the researcher of this thesis has investigated whether the translator of Cape No. 7 successfully applied a variety of translation strategies and prioritized the translation criteria well, to enable the target audience to receive the same message of the film as the source audience, especially when subtitling is constrained by time and space. There are two research areas which have been examined: slang and humour. The data analysis of slang scenes included Tai-yu slang and swearing, while humorous scenes were divided into three areas: puns, irony and metaphor. The research data have been analysed by means of analysis diagrams, which were trialled in a pilot study, described in Chapter Three. The pilot study lead to a new categorization based on previous researchers’ taxonomies (Aixelá, 1996; Davies, 2003; Tveit and Fong 2005, as cited in Yang, 2006), and this was applied to the analysis diagrams. According to the findings from the analysis chapters (Chapter Four & Five), the translator of Cape No. 7 preferred to use mostly the paraphrasing strategy in translating Tai-yu slang and humour, and the synonymy strategy in conveying swearing. In addition, the translator often strengthened swear words rather than toning them down in the English subtitles. However, when subtitling humorous scenes, the translator preferred to incorporate two strategies to deal with the cultural barriers when conveying the humorous effect. The compensation strategy was not used often in slang translation. In regard to the translation criteria, pragmatics and accuracy appeared to have been deemed more important by the translator than other criteria. Surprisingly functional equivalence did not seem to have been the translator’s first priority, as suggested by earlier research. Overall, this research study appeared to show that the translator of Cape No. 7 considered the paraphrase strategy to be the most efficient strategy for maintaining CSIs, and that pragmatics and accuracy were the translator’s most important criteria, which differs from the findings of previous research studies.

This study deals with the translation of cultural references and proper-name allusions from English to Finnish in the DVD-subtitles of Gilmore Girls. Its most important aim is to examine what types of methods have been used to translate the culture-bound items found in the so-called Gilmore-isms or, what type of relationship does the target text have with the source text and whether the translations are more foreignising or domesticating. In addition to this, the study examines the type of influence the needs of the receiver and the audiovisual format and the relationship between the source and the target culture have on translation and in which ways translation is associated with cultural and social power structures in society. The research questions are approached with the help of Translation Studies. A methodological basis has been sought especially from the research on allusions by Leppihalme and the methods of foreignisation and domestication by Venuti. In addition to this, the analysis draws from Reception Theory and the Study of Audiovisual Translation. 9 episodes from the 4th season of Gilmore Girls were analysed. There were 62 Gilmore-isms and 80 cultural references to music, films, television programmes, fictional characters, politicians and famous people found in the study material. Based on this study and earlier research, it can be claimed that culture-bound items are usually translated with foreignising methods when translating from English to Finnish in television series. This is believed to have to do with the socio-economic power of Anglophone countries, especially the United States, over marginal ones. Finnish viewers are also used to English expressions and the culture of Anglophone countries and, therefore, the use of U.S. American cultural references does not form a problem for the receiver. The audiovisual format has not affected the chosen translation methods as much as had been anticipated, thus space has not been a particularly significant factor for the translators which can also be seen in the translation methods chosen
Tässä tutkielmassa käsitellään kulttuuriviittausten sekä erisnimi-alluusioiden kääntämistä englannista suomeksi Gilmoren tyttöjen DVD-tekstityksissä. Sen perimmäisenä tarkoituksena on selvittää, millaisin metodein niin kutsutuista Gilmore-ismeista löydetyt kulttuurisidonnaiset viittaukset on käännetty, eli millainen suhde lähdetekstillä on kohdetekstiin ja ovatko käännökset kotouttavia vai vieraannuttavia. Lisäksi tutkielmassa selvitetään vastaanottajan tarpeiden ja audiovisuaalisen formaatin sekä lähde- ja kohdekulttuurin välisen suhteen vaikutusta käännöksiin ja millä tavoin kääntäminen liittyy yhteiskunnassa vallitseviin kulttuurisiin ja sosiaalisiin valtarakenteisiin. Tutkimuskysymyksiä lähestytään kääntämistutkimuksen keinoin. Metodista teoriapohjaa on haettu erityisesti Leppihalmeen alluusioiden tutkimuksesta, sekä Venutin kotouttamisen ja vieraannuttamisen strategioista. Tämän lisäksi analyysiosio ammentaa tietoa vastaanottotutkimuksesta, sekä audiovisuaalisen kääntämisen tutkimuksesta. Tutkimuksessa analysoitiin 9 Gilmoren tyttöjen jaksoa 4. tuotantokaudelta. Musiikkiin, elokuviin, televisio-ohjelmiin, fiktiivisiin hahmoihin, poliitikoihin sekä kuuluisuuksiin liittyviä Gilmore-ismeja löydettiin tutkimusmateriaalista 62 kappaletta ja niistä kulttuurisidonnaisia viittauksia 80 kappaletta. Tämän sekä aiempien tutkimusten perusteella voidaan väittää, että kulttuurisidonnaiset viittaukset käännetään useimmiten vieraannuttavasti silloin, kun käännetään englannista suomeksi televisiosarjoissa. Tämän uskotaan liittyvän englanninkielisten maiden, erityisesti Yhdysvaltojen omaamaan sosio-ekonomiseen valta-asemaan. Suomalaiset katsojat ovat myös tottuneet englanninkielisiin ilmaisuihin ja englanninkielisten maiden kulttuuriin, joten yhdysvaltalaisten kulttuuriviittausten käyttö sellaisenaan ei muodostu ongelmaksi katsojalle. Audiovisuaalinen formaatti ei ole vaikuttanut valittuihin käännösmetodeihin niin paljon kuin odotettiin, eli tila ei ole muodostunut merkittäväksi tekijäksi kääntäjille, mikä näkyy myös valituissa käännösmetodeissa

Abstract:
During the 21st century, online communities that crowdsource audiovisual translations have been born alongside the professional translation agencies. These amateurs translate subtitles for their own favourite movies and TV series, and share them online for other fans free of charge. The aim of this study is to find out whether the use of translation techniques differ between commercial and crowdsourced translations, and if they do, why, and how that affects the comprehensibility of the translation. The data for the study consists of two translations, one crowdsourced and one commercial, of the same source material: the introductory act of one episode of the American situational comedy How I Met Your Mother. The analysis is based on nine translation techniques described by translation researchers Vinay, Darbelnet, Malone and Retsker: literal translation, borrowing, calque, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation, omissions and compensations. The results of the study show that the translator of the commercial subtitles has aimed for more concise translation to follow the stricter technical limitations, such as the number of characters that can be visible in a screen text. This is done by favouring the use of adaptations and omissions and avoiding the use of literal translations. The crowdsourced subtitle, on the other hand, stayed more faithful to the source material where the broader limitations allow it. Because the data of the study is rather small, the results are not to be generalized into all commercial and crowdsourced subtitles
Ammattimaisen audiovisuaalisen kääntämisen rinnalle on 2000-luvun aikana syntynyt Internetissä toimivia verkkoyhteisöjä, jotka talkoistavat käännöksiä: amatöörit kääntävät tekstityksiä omiin suosikkielokuviinsa ja -TV-sarjoihinsa ja jakavat niitä ilmaiseksi muille saman materiaalin faneille. Tämän tutkielman päämääränä on selvittää, eroavatko talkoistetut käännökset kaupallisista käännöksistä niissä käytetyiden käännösstrategioiden osalta, ja jos eroavat, miksi, ja miten se vaikuttaa käännöksen ymmärrettävyyteen. Tutkimuksen aineistona on samasta lähdemateriaalista, Ensisilmäyksellä-tv-sarjan erään jakson alkunäytöksestä, tehdyt kaksi eri käännöstä. Analyysi pohjautuu yhdeksään käännösstrategiaan, jotka käännöstieteen tutkijat Vinay, Darbelnet, Malone ja Retsker ovat kategorisoineet: sananmukaiset käännökset, sanalainat, käännöslainat, uudelleenmuotoilut, mukautukset, vastaavuudet, sopeutukset, poisjätöt ja täydennykset. Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että kaupallisessa käännöksessä kääntäjä on pyrkinyt pitämään ilmaisun suppeampana pysyäkseen tiukemmissa teknisissä vaatimuksissa, kuten yhteen ruututekstiin mahtuvien merkkien rajoituksessa. The study undertaken sets out to explore if there is any difference in English comprehension when viewing TV-programs with or without subtitles, in the classroom. The research which has been executed prior to ours shows that lots of people spend more time watching television than they do reading books in their native language. Still, there is more research in reading than in the field of television and comprehension. Furthermore, there are very few studies in the area of subtitling. Media use in today’s society is unavoidable and we believe that future teachers should use television as an educational tool and incorporate multimedia in lesson plans in an effective way. It is our belief that the visual and oral input of television with subtitles can aid students in their ability to memorize and comprehend the content.The research was carried out in the south of Sweden with a class of ninth graders. Firstly, we tested their vocabulary skills through a word knowledge test. Secondly, we proceeded to divide the class into two groups. These groups later saw the same episode of an American TV series. One group saw the show with subtitles, and the other one without. After the show they answered questionnaires on the content of the program and later on six students were selected to be interviewed. These target students were questioned on their thoughts and attitudes towards subtitles, as well as tested on their ability to analyze the content of the show. Although no definite answers can be given from this degree paper, we came to some conclusions. The students’ attitudes towards subtitles differed. Four out of six students were negative towards the usage of subtitles in an educational setting, because they felt more challenged to comprehend the plot without them. The two remaining were positive to subtitles and would use them at all times as support to aid them in their English comprehension.

Abstract:
Information literacy is a relatively new concept in Turkey and is most accessible to English Language Learners. This article-format dissertation identifies the information needs and habits of English Language and Literature majors at a major Turkish university, discusses the development of an online intervention to teach information literacy to these students, and tests the efficacy of using Turkish subtitles to teach information literacy skills to these English majors. Article 1 surveyed students majoring in English Language and Literature about their attitudes towards library usage and sources. Student attitudes revealed a preference for internet sources over library sources and a belief that internet sources are more likely than library sources to provide students with the information they need. In response to the need for increased information literacy instruction, an online tutorial was developed to teach information literacy skills that focus on the Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education. Article 2 discusses the design and development of this tutorial. Article 3 tests the most effective language configuration for students to learn these information literacy skills, finding that students that completed the tutorial with an English-language soundtrack and Turkish subtitles finished tasks at a statistically significant faster pace than other groups and with statistically significant more success. Overall, Turkish English majors showed a need for increased information literacy skills. A subtitled tutorial is one way to provide this information literacy training.

Use of movies and TV shows for foreign language learning purposes pervades informal settings where viewers enjoy the multiplicity of soundtracks and of subtitles. However, this is not an integral part of formal language education policies. Hoping to inform policy making processes, this study aimed to investigate the most efficient use of audio/subtitle combinations for specific purposes. As a result, reversed subtitling was found to be effective for vocabulary learning whereas, generally, bimodal subtitling was considered to benefit accent-related problems. The participants self-reported preferrence for non-subtitled version in case of listening comprehension in general, which was due to the subtitle effect in the case of students at lower levels. Considering that mostly interlingual subtitled content is the only version in most platforms, these findings make it necessary to prefer a platform presenting a variety of alternative combinations in terms of soundtrack and subtitles.

Most studies on the use of subtitled videos for EFL learning have focused on intermediate and advanced adult learners viewing short L2 clips with captions. However, there is hardly any that deals with the use of TV series for young learners, and research has rarely assessed the various aspects of vocabulary knowledge in which students may improve when watching TV. In the present experiment, three groups of sixth-grade beginner EFL learners watched a full-length TV series episode under different input modalities: L1 subtitles (N=19), L2 subtitles (N=16), or no subtitles (N=17). All groups showed progress in form and meaning recall from pre-test to post-test, and L2 subtitling led to significantly greater gains in vocabulary recall than L1 subtitling, although this advantage was not shown in the case of episode comprehension.

This chapter proceeds by detailing two important fields of subtitling and dubbing practice that involve deliberate mistranslation and/or misuse, where quality concerns are overshadowed by politics and policing. Censorship and piracy deploy subtitling and dubbing to radically different ends, intersecting with errant value politics in both unregulated and over-regulated contexts. Together, they indicate the excessive and far-reaching impact of errancy on everyday practices of screen translation. Focusing on pragmatic considerations, this chapter explores how censorship regularly infiltrates professional audiovisual translation operations, and how pirate subtitling and dubbing violates copyright laws, industry regulations and professional translation norms alike while drawing attention to non-Western and non-English speaking contexts as sites of geopolitical contestation. It concludes that screen translation practices associated with censorship and piracy are particularly prevalent within global media flows, as distribution, access and engagement become increasingly decentralised and/or communal.

John Adams is a biographical miniseries produced and broadcasted by the American satellite network HBO, which ran between March 16 and April 27, 2008. It illustrates the life of the United States' second president, John Adams, from 1770 to his death in 1826. Some of the key scenes deal with the Tea Party of Boston, the process of independence and the signing of the Declaration. This series is a major example of how to use a media source to get the student involved in the lesson while acquiring skills and knowledge belonging to different areas. The development of the American Revolution (for history and geography), the ideals of Liberalism (for philosophy), and the early pamphlets and the Declaration of Independence itself (for literature) are some examples of how the student can get acquainted with a multidisciplinary learning process. The experience has shown how this miniseries helps the student to learn English while watching it (with or without subtitles, regarding the subject's skills), and through several workshops afterwards.

Subtitling Malay movies into English in Malaysia presents particular constrictions and defies subtitlers, as the two languages have little in common and have a number of untranslatability elements. Upin and Ipin is a Malaysian television series produced by Les’ Copaque Production, which features the life of the twin brothers in a fictional Malaysian village. The series was first introduced in 2007 and can be considered as one of the most successful animated television series in Malaysia. However, the series represents significantly unique language, leading to a significant concern in subtitling. Hence, this article aims to investigate the errors utilized in the movie Upin and Ipin Pengembaraan Bermula. The research used Koponen’s (2010) error categories to classify the translation errors, by comparing the subtitles in the source and target texts. The study supports the findings of Rull et al. (2016) on omission and mistranslation as the common errors. It is hoped that this study could serve as a reference for other translation research on subtitling to and from other languages in Malaysia.

Crazy Rich Asians (2018) is a movie telling about Singaporean wealthy families, and in particular a love story between an heir and a commoner. Taking place in Singapore and Malaysia, this Hollywood movie includes Singaporean English (Singlish) in the dialogues so as to expose Asian identity. This study purports to illustrate Singlish utilized in Crazy Rich Asian (2018), and the strategies applied in subtitling the Singlish into Indonesian. This study is descriptive in nature, and scrutinizes the movie script while comparing the Singlish found with the Indonesian subtitles. Utilizing a Microstrategies theory proposed by Cintas and Remael (2007), this study maps subtitle strategies to reveal their impact on viewers. There are 86 Singlish words and phrases identified, and the subtitle strategies found are calque, transposition, explication, loan, omission, substitution, lexical recreation and compensation. The most frequently applied subtitle strategy applied is calque, which turns Singlish specific lexical and grammatical features into a set of formal Indonesian words and phrases. As a consequence, the translator can be considered successful in providing information about the movie story for Indonesian viewers. However, the translator fails to effectively introduce Singlish words and phrases as markers of Asian identity to Indonesian viewers.

Currently, thousands of free K-12 educational videos exist online with the aim of trying to help young students learn outside of the typical scholastic environment. However, most of these videos are in English, so without subtitles it may be difficult for non-native English-speaking students to fully understand them. These students may need to spend time searching for translations and understanding content, which can distract them from grasping the important concepts within the videos. The state-ofthe- art of speech-to-text and NLP techniques might help this group digest the content of instructional videos more effectively. This paper proposes an application that uses speech-to-text, machine translation, and NLP techniques to generate translated subtitles and visual learning aids for viewers of instructional videos. This video application supports more than 20 languages. We applied our application to some popular online educational videos and conducted a qualitative evaluation of its approach and effectiveness. The results demonstrated that the application could successfully translate the English of the videos into the viewers’ native language(s), detect keywords, and display relevant images to further facilitate contextual understanding.

Abstract:
This video describes an intervention conducted by the Evidence Project in Port Said, Egypt, aimed at increasing demand for private family planning health (FP/RH) services among young men and women (aged 18–35 years) who work in garment factories. In Port Said, the intervention was aimed at young garment factory workers, where selected factory workers were trained to serve as peer educators and to provide FP/RH messages to their co-workers, referring them to the infirmary nurse for more information and counseling, as needed. This nurse referred those who desired more services or FP methods to trained physicians and pharmacists. This video also describes how factory health committees were created to ensure sustainability of the program in each factory. This video, which is in Arabic with English subtitles, can be used to introduce a worker health program to factory leadership.
