Abstract:
Teacher education is related to the future talent training of the country and has far-reaching significance. Teacher-training students majoring in English not only need to learn English well but also need to learn how to teach English. Therefore, teacher-training English majors should emphasize the cultivation of English subjects and teaching ability, which should not be limited to either language learning or teaching skills. At present, all levels and types of education attach great importance to the role of teaching materials, and education for future teachers is no exception. It can be said that the quality and level of teaching materials are directly related to teachers’ teaching and students’ learning, and directly related to the quality and specifications of talent training. The article takes the series of textbooks—“English for Teachers in the New Century”—published by Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press as an example. From the perspective of the characteristics of the selected topics and content innovation, it discusses the feathers of “teacher training” and “political thinking” of the core curriculum textbooks for English teacher training. Also, some scientific suggestions will be made to help teachers penetrate the concept of teacher education while cultivating students’ language abilities.

Abstract:
The article raises the issue of creating a system of introductory training for Aviation English teachers for successful realization of teaching in military and civilian institutions of higher education in the aviation industry. A new scientific and pedagogical concept is introduced and argued, as «introductory training for teachers». Such training is necessary for teachers of higher educational establishments when transferring to higher positions into the institutions with another specialization, like transition from a civilian to a military institution to continue teaching career while teaching a foreign language for professional purposes. It was stressed in the article that in the context of transformation processes in Ukraine's transition to NATO and ICAO standards it is necessary firstly to train qualified teaching and instructional staff for the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine to ensure high quality of future specialists training. The article considers the requirements set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for teachers who teach Aviation English to pilots and air traffic controllers in higher education institutions or on the basis of accredited training organizations. The conclusion on expediency and necessity to use these requirements to implement into the system of introductory training of Aviation English teachers in higher education establishments of Ukraine is made. There is also an approximate content of introductory training program for Aviation English teachers, as a result of which teachers will have an opportunity to acquire necessary knowledge and skills to teach Aviation English.

Abstract:
The ability of teaching English among English teachers still needs to be improved. The atmosphere of English class will feel maximal when the teacher as a key factor plays its function and ability as an attractive, energetic, creative teacher and always uses English as a medium of communication in teaching. English as Medium of Interaction (EMI) is an approach in training to improve teacher skills in teaching English to junior high school teachers in the Kadugede Group. Instructor provides training with full of English so that the trainees are moved to respond in English as well. The use of English in the classroom with a percentage of only 60%: 40% will certainly have a significant positive impact in the learning process. Motivating teachers by providing concrete examples that communicating optimally in English classes must continue to be done to get effective and efficient learning outcomes. After completion of teacher training – teachers feel motivated to teach in the classroom using EMI. They felt that during the training, they had received full training in English, so they realized that in English, students were accustomed to listening and were moved and forced to speak English because learning the language was just the matter of habit.

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore elementary teachers’ experiences and perceptions of English in-service teacher education and English language teaching. Fifty elementary English teachers took part in the survey. Of these, ten teachers were involved in the focus group research. Their interviews, reflection journals, and lesson observations and analyses were collected. Data were analyzed through a mixed-method approach, primarily qualitative with quantitative methods as needed. The results are as follows: First, novice teachers found that the provision of English courses in novice teacher training was insufficient, but they felt in-service teacher training, graduate programs, teacher learning communities, and mentoring helped improve their teaching abilities. Second, when teaching, novice teachers in the focus group concentrated on phonics and basic language skills and activity- and learner-centered instruction, and they developed effective materials in their English classes. They experienced difficulties teaching English in English and teaching students at different levels. However, they made progress through various trials and errors. Third, for the professional development of novice English teachers, suggestions were made in the areas of teacher education programs, teacher learning communities, schools and administrations, and policies on teachers and teacher education, as well as the novice teachers’ efforts. Significant implications concerning novice English teacher education will be explored in greater detail.

Abstract:
The contemporary discussion on the topic of multicultural education in the Canadian literature relates questions of race, ethnicity or culture to public schooling, with little attention given to the area of teacher preparation. In this study we review the political and social background of multicultural education. This study notably presents the results of a 42 item survey of pre-service teachers' perceptions of: (a) the concept of multiculturalism and; (b) the adequacy of their training for multicultural classrooms.<br>The pre-service teachers also examine their curriculum for multicultural content. This is followed up by a content analysis of the respective programs by the researcher.<br>The implications of this exploratory study are especially valuable for teacher training institutions. As multiculturalism is a fact of Canadian society, it is logical to educate our future citizens in accordance with this reality. Institutions are failing to prepare teachers for today's society if they are not providing courses in multicultural education.

Abstract:
Informe de Seminario para optar al grado de Licenciado en Lengua y Literatura Inglesa<br>The following thesis reports on a qualitative study of the Estándares Orientadores para Carreras de Pedagogía en Inglés by MINEDUC (2014). Since there are values associated with standards, the creation and application of them entail an ideology that reflects a particular shared vision. Then, the goal of this study is to identify these values in order to understand the ideologies behind the standards for teacher training in Chile, by means of characterising (a) their structure, (b) their content and (c) their social function. The Estándares Orientadores para Carreras de Pedagogía en Inglés consists of 10 standards which state the necessary skills and knowledge an early English teacher should have. These standards were analysed by assigning codes to their content in order to observe general ideas that could be interpreted as ideologies. These ideologies were categorised into three domains: structure, where standards are constructed as principles, declarations and illustrations; content, where it is explained that teachers of English should know, apply, and value their knowledge and abilities; and social function where standards seem to be created as a set of curriculum features, and not as mere guides. Ideologies identified were interpreted also in the light of an interview conducted to the head of standard design team. The ideologies identified in this study are relevant to the discussion of current English teacher training processes in Chile, and the impact that public policies have on the teaching of English in the country.

Abstract:
This study investigated the connection between teacher use of motivational strategies and observable learner motivated behavior in an adult Intensive English Program (IEP) in the United States. The question of whether teachers would find value in being specifically trained in the use of motivational strategies as part of teacher educations programs was examined. Eight teachers and 117 students were observed over the course of 24 classes using a classroom observation instrument, the motivation orientation of language teaching (MOLT), originally developed by Guilloteaux and Dörnyei (2008) and modified by the current researchers. The MOLT observation scheme allowed for real-time coding of observable learner motivated behaviors and teacher motivational behaviors based on Dörnyei's (2001) motivational strategy framework for foreign language classrooms. Postlesson teacher evaluations completed by both the observer and the teacher formed part of the measure of teacher motivational practice. Additionally, teachers attended up to two training sessions, responded to postlesson interview questions and completed a feedback survey. The results validate the previous findings that teacher motivational practice is strongly related to learner motivated behavior. Additionally, results show that teachers find value in motivational strategy training.

Abstract:
TThe aim of this paper is to offer an overview of how an EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) programme was designed at the University of A Coruña (Spain) to implement courses taught in English by its teaching staff. The final goals of this initiative were twofold: to attract an increasing number of foreign students through mobility or as new admissions; and to promote internationalisation at home for both students and lecturers. Some of the steps taken in this process (from coaching to EMI) are explained as well as the principles on which a particular teaching methodology for non-native speakers of English is based. Content knowledge and a B2 level of English is presupposed, but a further level of teacher professionalism is aspired to, involving commitment, reflection, responsibility. A shift in focus, from teacher- to student-centred learning is required. Instructors should show their students how to learn and guide them along their learning paths. This implies a shift in the original mindset that is strongly rooted in particular teaching traditions. Communicative competence is also a key factor: knowing how to transmit and communicate is at least as important as the material content itself, and lecturers should be good communicators.

Abstract:
We live in the digital century with a rapid pace of technological innovation fascinated globally with Internet being the dominating call. It has resulted in integrating technologies using online learning which has evolved in recent years. Online learning has become popular because of its potential in providing more flexible access to content and instruction at any time, and any place. In tandem with the growth of online learning in teacher training and teacher education, the focus of this research is therefore, to highlight a fully online learning mode using an online gamified learning platform (Classcraft) to enhance teachers’ proficiency. The research question addresses to design and develop an online gamified learning for English language teachers. English language teachers need a certain level of proficiency in the language to serve as models for our students and provide them with valuable language input that can help them learn. Thus, the framework conceptualises the issue of proficiency being at the forefront for English language teachers, the Roadmap and professional competencies. According to The Roadmap 2015-2025, the current requirement of a minimum CEFR Level C1 for English language teachers in Malaysia is aimed at ensuring that teachers are able to teach effectively in the language classroom. For this reason, there is a need for all English language teachers to initiate their own learning. The method employed is design and development research design. The findings have portrayed online gamified learning has enhanced teachers’ competencies using Classcraft.

Full text
Abstract:
In-service teacher training aims to improve the supply of public education. A randomized experiment was conducted in Mexico to test whether teacher training could increase teacher efficiency in public secondary schools. After seven and a half months of exposure to a trained teacher, students improved their English. This paper explores two mechanisms through which training can affect student learning. First, trained teachers improved their English by 0.35 standard deviations in the short run. Teachers in the control group caught up with treatment teachers by the end of the school year in part because teachers in the treatment group reduced out-of-pocket expenditures to learn English in 53 percent. Second, teachers changed classroom practices by providing more opportunities for students to actively engage in learning. This evidence suggests that teacher training may be effective at improving student learning and that teacher incentives may play a role in mediating its effects.

Berdan, Robert, Terrence Wiley, and Magaly Lavadenz. California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) Position Statement on Ebonics. Center for Equity for English Learners, 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.15365/ceel.statement.1997.1.

Full text
Abstract:
In this position statement, the authors write in support of Ebonics (also known as African American Vernacular English, Black English, Black Dialect, and African American Language) as a legitimate language. The linguistic and cultural origins of Ebonics is traced, along with its legitimacy by professional organizations and the courts. CABE asserts that the role of schools and teachers is therefore to build on students’ knowledge of Ebonics rather than replace or eradicate Ebonics as they teach standard English. This position statement has implications for teacher training.

Mridula, Kashpia Afroz, and Wahid bin Ahsan. Bridging the English Proficiency Gap: The Higher Education Challenges of Bangla-Medium Students in Bangladesh. Userhub, 2025. https://doi.org/10.58947/journal.svfz89.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the challenges Bangla-medium students in Bangladesh face when transitioning to English-based higher education. Despite over a decade of English instruction, many struggle with comprehension, academic writing, and classroom engagement due to exam-oriented learning, ineffective pedagogy, and limited exposure to spoken English. Socioeconomic disparities further widen the language gap, restricting access to English-medium education and supplementary learning resources. Using a qualitative approach, semi-structured interviews with 15 students, teachers, and guardians explored their experiences. Thematic analysis identified key barriers, including reliance on rote memorization, limited communicative teaching, and inconsistent language use in universities. The findings highlight the need for curriculum reforms, teacher training in communicative methods, structured university support, and targeted policy interventions to improve students’ academic success and career readiness.

Matera, Carola. Incorporating Scaffolded Dialogic Reading Practice in Teacher Training: An Opportunity to Improve Instruction for Young Dual Language Learners in Transitional Kindergarten. Loyola Marymount University, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.15365/ceel.policy.4.

Full text
Abstract:
Findings from a joint collaborative between the Center for Equity for English Learners (CEEL) at Loyola Marymount University and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to provide professional development and coaching to Transitional Kindergarten (TK) teachers on the Scaffolded Dialogic Reading (SDR) are presented in this policy brief. SDR is a method to enhance language skills through dialogue and research-based scaffolds between teachers and small groups of children mediated through repeated readings of storybooks. The purpose of this brief is to: 1) state the opportunity to ensure Dual Language Learner (DLL) support within California’s TK policy; 2) provide a synthesis of research findings; and 3) provide TK professional learning and policy recommendations that would allow for the inclusion of professional development on evidence-based practices purposefully integrated with DLL supports. Policy recommendations include: 1) utilize professional learning modules such as SDR in 24 ECE unit requirement for TK teachers; 2) include individuals with ECE and DLL expertise in the ECE Teacher Preparation Advisory Panel; and 3) allocate additional funds in the state budget for training on SDR, in-classroom support for TK teachers of DLLs, and evaluation of these efforts.

Cassity, Elizabeth, Debbie Wong, Jevelin Wendiady, and Jennie Chainey. Teacher Development Multi-Year Study Series. Vanuatu: Final Report. Australian Council for Educational Research, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.37517/978-1-74286-729-8.

Full text
Abstract:
The Australian Government is supporting the Government of Vanuatu through its Vanuatu Education Support Program (VESP) to undertake long-term education reforms. A key focus of these reforms is the rollout of a new national curriculum in conjunction with the National Language Policy (2012), intended to improve teaching quality and student learning outcomes for students in the primary and early secondary years of education. Part of a multi-year study series, the Education Analytics Service (EAS) is investigating how the VESP is making a difference to these teaching and learning outcomes. The new primary curriculum has been rolled out to schools in stages by year level, starting with Year 1 in 2016, and is accompanied by the distribution of teaching and learning materials and training. The new curriculum facilitates content uniformity and promotes pedagogical approaches, such as student-centred learning, that aim to transform teaching and learning. The National Language Policy is an important change implemented as part of the new curriculum, allowing agreed local languages to be used throughout the primary years as students make the transition to English or French (MoET, 2012). 1 Phases I and II of the VESP have been integral to the design and implementation of the new primary curriculum. In-service training modules have supported the curriculum rollout. VESP also supports the distribution and development of teaching and learning materials as part of the new curriculum. This study has provided the opportunity to investigate teaching quality and student learning outcomes in Vanuatu linked to the rollout of the national curriculum.

Acosta López, Juan Carlos. Unveiling hidden opportunities: a case study on the perception of affordances in informal english learning activities mediated by technology in a fl teacher-training program. Sello Editorial UNAD, 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.22490/ecedu.8389.

Full text
Abstract:
This qualitative single-case study explored the perceived affordances of informal activity systems mediated by online technologies for promoting English language learning among 115 FL teachers-in-training at UNAD. The study employed a word-based questionnaire administered to the entire sample, followed by small focus group interviews with 20 purposively selected participants, (Morgan &amp; Hoffman, 2018). The resulting data were analyzed using a dynamic and fluid 2-cycle coding procedure. The findings show that learners’ ability to per-ceive and engage with technological, social, metacognitive, and language learning affordances significantly influences their engagement with technology-mediated activities and their level of success in acquiring a for-eign language. Notably, perceiving physical affordances serves as a prerequisite for perceiving more complex affordances, such as educational and social ones. This research significantly contributes to the advancement of knowledge regarding informal English learning mediated by online technologies, with a particular focus on distance education models. The study highlights the importance of fostering learners’ autonomous learning skills, given that most of the language learning in such models occurs in informal settings, and it discusses the need to leverage online resources to maximize language FL affordances for FL teachers-in-training, ultimately enhancing their language learning outcomes.

Abstract:
This empirical study investigates AI knowledge, beliefs, and reported practices among secondary school learners of English, French, and Spanish in Germany (n=226). A survey revealed significant gaps between students' self-perceived and actual understanding of AI as well as their use and critical reflection on it. The findings suggest that integrating AI into foreign language learning, initially through targeted teacher training, is instrumental to develop both functional and evaluative skills among students, thereby sustainably fostering critical digital literacy.

Rodriguez-Segura, Daniel, and Isaac Mbiti. Back to the Basics: Curriculum Reform and Student Learning in Tanzania. Research on Improving Systems of Education (RISE), 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.35489/bsg-rise-wp_2022/099.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2015, the Tanzanian government implemented a curriculum reform that focused instruction in Grades 1 and 2 on the “3Rs”—reading, writing, and arithmetic. Consequently, almost 80 percent of the instructional time in these grades was mandated towards foundational literacy in Kiswahili and numeracy skills. Other subjects such as English were no longer taught. Using student-level panel data, we evaluate the effect of this policy on learning outcomes using a difference-in-differences approach which leverages the variation in the timing of implementation across grade levels and cohorts impacted by the policy. We find that the policy increased learning by around 0.20 standard deviations in Kiswahili and math test scores one year after the start of the reform. Timely teacher training on the new curriculum was associated with even larger effects. Evaluating longer term outcomes, we find suggestive evidence that the reform decreased the dropout rate of children up to four years later. However, this was also accompanied with lower average passing rates in the national Grade 4 examination due to compositional changes as low-performing students became less likely to dropout.
