The production of urban space in Latin America turns out to be a social product resulting from a historical process in which natural space undergoes significant transformations. This paper analyses how the urban history of Ibagué (Colombia) is related to three historical processes crossed by nature, identifying common aspects with other Latin American cities: nature as a limit to urban growth (conquest and colony), nature as an artifice of urban space (modern city), and nature as a transition zone between the city and the countryside (metropolitan edge). The presence and circulation of Southern Netherlands’ values is a fascinating subject with a lot of possibilities for the researchers: Graphic material – printed or manuscript – books, stamps and engravings, as well as paintings, tapestries, sculptures and textiles exported from Antwerp found their way to the New World or even further, via Seville – the gateway to America. Today many examples of Southern Netherland’s books and artistic objects can still be admired in Latin American and from Goa to Manila. AbstractThe De Bry collection of voyages, published in Frankfurt and Oppenheim between 1590 and 1634, has traditionally been regarded as dispensing a Protestant iconography of the New World. But for the analysis of the translated travel accounts in the collection, too long considered of secondary importance to the monumental copper engravings, a fundamentally different interpretation of the editors' objectives is in order. This article studies the Latin and German versions of the narratives, which offer a mosaic of variations disclosing a careful editorial strategy. While the German volumes we

What is the relationship between visuality, racial violence, and political hegemony in Cuba? In Vista del amanecer en el trópico (1974), Guillermo Cabrera Infante tries to answer this question by focusing on visual media and its manipulation over half a millennium. My analysis of the novel as a parody of a Latin American álbum de vistas—a book with idealized etchings, engravings, maps, and/or photos of places and people—uncovers the connection of engravings and photography to Cuba’s racialized political projects. Vista del amanecer underscores continuities in racist ideologies and policies tha

The Cuzco School as an artistic phenomenon stands out in the history of colonial painting in Latin America. It arose on the lands of the Inca Empire, which roughly coincided with the territory of the modern Andean countries. Some features of pre-Columbian art can be traced in the art of the Viceroyalty of Peru, such as the abundance of gold ornamentation on canvases, the static nature of the characters and the monumental nature of the images. The painting also embodies elements of the world that surrounded local artists: flora and fauna, traditional clothing, etc. Of great importance for the d
