Abstract:
The concept of entropy, a fundamental principle in the field of chemistry, has traditionally been oversimplified as a mere measure of disorder. However, this simplistic perspective fails to capture the intricate and multifaceted nature of entropy, along with its profound influence on various phenomena. This paper seeks to delve deeper into the understanding of entropy by moving beyond the conventional disorder-centric viewpoint and adopting a more nuanced approach that integrates both disorder and energy considerations. Through the redefinition of potential energy and microstates as integral c

Abstract:
This report is the first output in a body of work undertaken to identify operationally feasible suggestions to improve risk communication and community engagement efforts (RCCE) with displaced Rohingya people in Cox’s Bazar. Specifically, these should seek to improve healthcare seeking behaviour and acceptance of essential health services in the camps where the Rohingya reside. It was developed by the Social Science in Humanitarian Action Platform (SSHAP) at the request of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in Bangladesh. As a first step in this process, this review paper sy

Abstract:
The novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a global pandemic that has infected at least 1.2 million people and caused more than 67,000 deaths worldwide. The Philippines has recorded 3,764 confirmed cases and 177 deaths as of April 7, 2020 and has implemented an enhanced Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) from March 17 to April 30 in attempts to limit population movement and curb the spread of the epidemic. Based on the disease transmission model, it is projected that aggressive efforts in the post-ECQ period to isolate at least 70 percent of infectious cases through better co

Abstract:
Middle-level theory (MLT) sits between project-level theory, which is specific to a particular context, and grand theory, which is too general to be empirically useful. By understanding the underlying causal processes of a class of interventions, as well as the factors conditioning their operation, MLT seeks to enhance the transferability of study findings and so inform programme selection and design. During its inception stage, enhancing transferability through the use of MLT was identified as a Programme of Work for the UK Aid-funded Centre of Excellence for Development Impact and Learning p

Abstract:
This paper seeks to estimate the extent to which market-implied policy expectations could be improved with further information disclosure from the FOMC. Using text analysis methods based on large language models, we show that if FOMC meeting materials with five-year lagged release dates—like meeting transcripts and Tealbooks—were accessible to the public in real time, market policy expectations could substantially improve forecasting accuracy. Most of this improvement occurs during easing cycles. For instance, at the six-month forecasting horizon, the market could have predicted as much as 125
