Abstract:

Paraules clau: Oratòria sagrada, Sermons, Barroc, Sacralització del territoriAbstract: The baroque sermon is a way of comprehension of the world, which was considered to be a enigma to deciphering. Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract This article examines the author-reader relationship as it is shaped by an “enigma of reading.” Evident in texts that directly address their readers, this enigma attempts to interpellate those readers into a specific role. Using two different models of interpellation created by Slavoj Žižek and Eyal Dotan, this article describes the shift from modern to postmodern texts in terms of reading enigmas. The author's particular case study focuses on the narrator's addresses in John Barth's Floating Opera. These addresses reveal how the narrative oscillates between interpellations that encourage a paranoid reading stance, stemming from an “enigma of desire” (as in Žižek's model) and interpellations that discourage this position, derived from an “enigma of addresser” (as in Dotan's model). Ultimately, readers are left feeling confused, without a stable reading position, and are forced to apply a “flickering” reading practice. This kind of practice rejects the oedipal role of the author as a father, in the Lacanian sense, who is the absolute subject responsible for constructing meaning and forming the law of the text.

- This article is a small contribution to keeping alive an original and rigorous way of thinking, coherent and articulated, not immediately revealed. The thinking of Muraro in Sorpresa ed Enigma (surprise and enigma). Muraro, who nurtured a deep impatience towards a certain psychoanalytic establishment, dedicated his book to those patients and to those analysts still animated by a spirit of research and engaged in a path of life for which both the direction and the result appear uncertain. According to Muraro the invariable fact in analysis is the method, whereas the pivot experience is the patient's surprise. The analyst is requested to be there. As a real person who is not thrown off balance. Maintaining the mysteriousness that the patient tries in every way to eliminate is indispensable for being able to restore to the patients their existential mysteriousness. Their enigma. To melt their own enigmas, patients must expose themselves through subjective choices. It is the feeling of surprise that permits them to come in contact with themselves. Abstract:
On the basis of evidence obtained by unravelling enigmas in Philostratus and Eunapius’ Lives of the Sophists and lifting the veil of mystery surrounding some of the crucial, sophistic-related passages from Isocrates and Dio Chrysostom’s writings, we were able to arrive to a conclusion that, contrary to all expectations, the Second Sophistic is closely connected not so much with rhetoric as with philosophy itself, no matter what the so-called sophists say of the phenomenon in their attempts to disguise the essence of things. Paradoxically enough, it turned out that the enigma in Eunapius and, above all, Philostratus’ work played almost the same role as did myth in Herodotus’ historical work in so far as only the skillful use of the mentioned stylistic device might confer an aura of magic to the scarce material being at the disposal of the authors. Abstract:
In 1861, in a reviewof Wilkie Collins'sThe Woman in White, a critic for theSpectatorcomplained that, “We are threatened with a new variety of the sensation novel … the whole interest of which consists in the gradual unraveling of some carefully prepared enigma” (“The Enigma Novel” 20). He was hardly the only reviewer to use a vocabulary of “puzzlement” or “enigma” when discussing Collins's work. Whether we look to an earlier review ofThe Woman in Whiteto find Collins faulted as “not a great novelist … the fascination which he exercises … [is] that he is a good constructor. Each of his stories is a puzzle, the key to which is not handed to us till the third volume” (Rev. ofThe Woman in White249) – or whether we turn to a critic ofThe Moonstone, who found Collins and his latest production “[un]worthy”: “We are no especial admirers of the department of art to which he has devoted himself, any more than we are of double acrostics or anagrams, or any of the many kinds of puzzles on which it pleases some minds to exercise their ingenuity” (Page, ed. 171–72) – we come up against the fact that Collins's novels, and especially his sensation novels, were sometimes known as “enigma novels” in the Victorian period. We can see too that this was not necessarily intended as a complimentary label. Indeed, though our own contemporary tendency has been to employ this particular moniker in a more neutral, descriptive register – to denote simply some fictions' reliance on mystery – we quickly find that Victorian reviewers were not so dispassionate in their usage. Instead, tracking names like “conundrum novel” or “enigma novel,” and terms like “puzzle,” “enigma,” and even “anagram,” shows that Collins's critics often used such phrases to index some of the same kinds of problems or concerns they more familiarly described with a rhetoric of “sensation.” A short survey suggests that their language of “puzzles” and “enigmas,” like their language of shocks and nerves, expressed disappointment at Collins's tendency to create anticlimaxes (the novel fizzles when the “puzzle” is solved); his emphasis on plot – or “carefully prepared enigma[s]” – over character; and his potential to render readers amoral and passive – patient attendants of solutions (“the key to which is not handed to us”) – rather than creatively engaged thinkers or moral questers. A simple nickname would seem to be a damning label indeed, on fuller survey.

The so-called "Hypothetical" Form (L.S. Finally the almost omnipresent a morpheme, an other enigma, is derived from an ancient General-Classifier (cf. ponapean language).

Abstract:
PDZ and LIM domains are modular protein interaction motifs present in proteins with diverse functions. Enigma is representative of a family of proteins composed of a series of conserved PDZ and LIM domains. The LIM domains of Enigma and its most related family member, Enigma homology protein, bind to protein kinases, whereas the PDZ domains of Enigma and family member actin-associated LIM protein bind to actin filaments. Enigma localizes to actin filaments in fibroblasts via its PDZ domain, and actin-associated LIM protein binds to and colocalizes with the actin-binding protein α-actinin-2 at Z lines in skeletal muscle. We show that Enigma is present at the Z line in skeletal muscle and that the PDZ domain of Enigma binds to a skeletal muscle target, the actin-binding protein tropomyosin (skeletal β-TM). The interaction between Enigma and skeletal β-TM was specific for the PDZ domain of Enigma, was abolished by mutations in the PDZ domain, and required the PDZ-binding consensus sequence (Thr-Ser-Leu) at the extreme carboxyl terminus of skeletal β-TM. Enigma interacted with isoforms of tropomyosin expressed in C2C12 myotubes and formed an immunoprecipitable complex with skeletal β-TM in transfected cells. The association of Enigma with skeletal β-TM suggests a role for Enigma as an adapter protein that directs LIM-binding proteins to actin filaments of muscle cells.

By identifying two general issues in recent history textbook controversies worldwide (oblivion and inclusion), this article examines understandings of the United States in Mexico's history textbooks (especially those of 1992) as a means to test the limits of historical imagining between U. S. and Mexican historiographies. Drawing lessons from recent European and Indian historiographical debates, the article argues that many of the historical clashes between the nationalist historiographies of Mexico and the United States could be taught as series of unsolved enigmas, ironies, and contradictions in the midst of a central enigma: the persistence of two nationalist historiographies incapable of contemplating their common ground. The article maintains that lo mexicano has been a constant part of the past and present of the US, and lo gringo an intrinsic component of Mexico's history. The di erences in their historical tracks have been made into monumental ontological oppositions, which are in fact two tracks—often overlapping—of the same and shared con ictual and complex experience.

The search for the chemical origins of life represents a long-standing and continuously debated enigma. Despite its exceptional complexity, in the last decades the field has experienced a revival, also owing to the exponential growth of the computing power allowing for efficiently simulating the behavior of matter—including its quantum nature—under disparate conditions found, e.g., on the primordial Earth and on Earth-like planetary systems (i.e., exoplanets). In this minireview, we focus on some advanced computational methods capable of efficiently solving the Schro¨dinger equation at different levels of approximation (i.e., density functional theory)—such as ab initio molecular dynamics—and which are capable to realistically simulate the behavior of matter under the action of energy sources available in prebiotic contexts. In addition, recently developed metadynamics methods coupled with first-principles simulations are here reviewed and exploited to answer to old enigmas and to propose novel scenarios in the exponentially growing research field embedding the study of the chemical origins of life.

Abstract: This essay reads Samuel Johnson’s Rasselas (1759) against the background of negative or apophatic theology and argues that it is unique among Johnson’s works in expressing a sense of life as an enigma . The silent or hidden symbol of the story is the Giza Sphinx, one of the foundational symbols of such theology: the second-century Church Father Clement of Alexandria, whose works Johnson owned, associated the enigmas of the Hebrew Bible with the mystery of the Egyptian sphinxes. More widely, Rasselas contains absent objects and symbols, enigmatic silences and responses, hidden images and paradoxes, self-defeating dualisms and habits of style, apophatic philosophy (“philosophy can tell no more”), and an enigmatic conclusion (“ nothing ”). The apophatic quality is embodied in the text through what Jorge Luis Borges refers to as Rasselas ’s “agile music,” the subtle, flexible management of narrative voices, which generates a distinctive kind of attention in the reader.

Abstract:
Background: A ruptured ectopic pregnancy is a true emergency and remains the leading cause of pregnancy related deaths worldwide. The objective is to study the clinical profile of ectopic pregnancy in a tertiary care hospital. Methods:A retrospective study conducted at Coimbatore Medical College Hospital from Jan 2019 to Dec 2020. A total of 149 patients with ectopic pregnancy were analysed on patient characteristics, risk factors, intraoperative findings and treatment modality. Results: A majority of patients with ectopic pregnancy (64.5%) did not have any risk factors, while 33.5% had predisposing risk factors associated with ectopic pregnancy. Most common presentation was ruptured tubal ectopic and the commonest site was ampulla (85.9%). There was 1 maternal death out of 149 cases reported (0.67%). Conclusion: Ectopic pregnancy still remains one of the major causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. Early diagnosis and referral in hemodynamically stable state along with use of minimal access surgery or medical management can change the scenario of ectopic pregnancy in the developing world.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Abstract Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) is one of the most accurate modes of obtaining thyroid nodule biopsies, however, up to 25% of biopsies still yield indeterminate results. There is an increasing number of thyroidectomies due to indeterminate nodules by FNA alone. Therefore, more accurate and time efficient diagnostic approaches for analyzing indeterminate thyroid nodules is required. Recent studies showed that Enigma is associated with different cancer types, including thyroid cancer progression and calcification through its interaction with bone morphogenic protein-1 (BMP-1) and tyrosine kinases linked to mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway. Our published data on Enigma protein analysis with immunohistochemistry showed promising findings to discriminate malignant versus benign nodules. We also showed a thyroid cancer stage-dependent enhancement of Enigma protein expression. In this study, we are investigating Enigma at a gene expression level by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), which is more time-efficient, quantitative, and requires less tissue than immunohistochemistry. We extracted mRNA/DNA/proteins from fresh malignant and benign thyroid nodules using a Qiagen AllPrep DNA/RNA/Protein Mini Kit. After verification of the quantity and purity by NanoDrop, isolated mRNA was then run through Enigma-RT-qPCR. MAPK assay was done by western blotting using MAPK-antibody. Our initial results found that Enigma-mRNA expression level was 3-fold higher in malignant compared to benign thyroid tissues. This finding supports our previous protein expression data with a relative quantitative difference in Enigma-mRNA expression level between malignant and benign thyroid nodules. MAPK expression was upregulated in thyroid cancer compared to benign nodules. We conclude that Enigma-RT-qPCR can be used effectively in FNA samples derived from thyroid nodules, which could potentially enhance the diagnostic accuracy of indeterminate nodules and decrease unnecessary thyroidectomies. Furthermore, both Enigma and MAPK were highly expressed in advanced tumor in the same tissues. Future study is needed to establish the functional interaction of Enigma-MAPK activity in thyroid cancer cells.

Abstract:
Enigma protein, encoded by the PDLIM7 gene, is overexpressed in thyroid cancer in a stage-dependent manner, suggesting a potential involvement in the initiation and progression of thyroid cancer. The Enigma interacts with several cellular pathways, including PI3K/AKT, MDM2, and BMP-1. The Enigma is regulated by microRNAs. Specifically, we showed that the Enigma protein upregulation corresponds to the downregulation of Let-7 family genes. There is limited research on the interactions and regulation of the Enigma with other proteins/genes in thyroid cancer tissues, indicating a gap in current knowledge. Our aim is to establish the Enigma as a biomarker. We also aim to study the interacting partners of the Enigma signaling pathways and their probable miRNA regulation in thyroid cancer progression. Using Western blotting, densitometric analysis, immunoprecipitation (IP), and reverse IP, we detected the protein expression and protein–protein interactions in the corresponding papillary thyroid carcinomas (PTCs). Utilizing real-time qPCR assay and Pearson’s correlation test, we highlighted the correlation between PDLIM7 and Let-7g gene expression in the same tissues. The results showed the differential upregulations of the Enigma protein in different stages of PTCs compared to benign tissues along with AKT, VDR, BMP-1, and MDM2 proteins. Loss of DBP was observed in a subset of PTCs. Strong interactions of the Enigma with PI3K/AKT and MDM2 were noted, along with a weaker BMP-1 interaction. Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis between PDLIM7 and let-7g gene expression was significant (p < 0.05); however, there was a weak inverse correlation (r = −0.27). The study suggests the potential utility of the PDLIM7-qPCR assay as a biomarker for thyroid cancer. The Enigma’s interactions with key signaling pathways may provide valuable insights into the development of thyroid cancer. The study contributes to understanding the molecular mechanisms involving the Enigma protein in thyroid cancer and highlights its potential as a biomarker.

Abstract:

Abstract:
By reinterpreting the motto as a form of enigma, the article provides an epistemological reading of the Sixth Day of Giovanni Boccaccio’s. As a peculiar metaphorical tool, the motto conceals and reveals philosophical knowledge. Besides providing a link to the medieval enigma tradition, the motto shows the same formal features of the ancient Greek enigma with which pre-Socratic philosophers exercised their search for knowledge.
