Abstract:
This study presents data from a survey on height trends in Brazilian Navy enlisted men and recruits born from 1970 to 1977. The sample consisted of 52,574 enlisted men and 4,459 recruits ranging in age from 18.00 to 18.99 years. The statistical processing employed two-way analysis of variance procedure, simple linear regression comparing height and year of birth and multiple analysis controlling for schooling (regression coefficient) and the chi-square. The results show that enlisted men and recruits displayed height increments, characterizing a contemporary process of secular trend. Such increments were also present in the country's various macro-regions. The results were compared to a recent investigation of a national scope the National Survey on Health and Nutrition (PNSN) and both enlisted men and recruits displayed higher median height than that reported by the PNSN. Level of schooling for individuals in the Navy is high, far superior to that of the Brazilian population as a whole. This set of data suggests that young men enlisting in the Navy are on average of a higher socioeconomic status than the Brazilian population in general, which limits possibilities for extrapolating the findings from this research.

Abstract:
The decline in healthy behavior in young people is a concern for public health in general and for country’s defense. The aim of this study is to identify and compare health behaviors and psychological distress between male conscripts enlisted and rejected for military service. This cross-sectional study included 1243 men aged 19–26 years (mean age 22.50 ± 2.43 years). We assessed health behaviors (physical activity, adherence to healthy eating patterns, cigarette smoking, and alcohol consumption) and psychological distress. Among all conscripts, 44.7% were physically inactive, 50.2% had low adherence to healthy nutrition, 9.6% were heavy drinkers, 62.3% were current smokers, and 9.1% had high psychological distress level. Compared with physically inactive conscripts, physically active conscripts were more likely to be enlisted (adjusted odds ratio (OR) = 1.42; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.11–2.03). Compared with current nonsmokers, current smokers were less likely to be enlisted (OR = 0.58; CI 0.39–0.86). Compared with conscripts with a high distress level, those with a low distress level were almost four times more likely to be enlisted (OR = 0.26; 95% CI 0.12–0.55). Adherence to guidelines for healthy eating and alcohol consumption was not significantly related to enlistment. These findings suggest that health behaviors in male conscripts are unsatisfactory. That is, about half are physically inactive, have a poor diet, and smoke, and nearly one in 10 is a heavy drinker and has a high psychological distress level. The enlisted conscripts were more likely to be sufficiently physically active and less likely to be a current smoker or have a high distress level. Early intervention programs to provide a heathier population of young men for conscription should focus on mental well-being and target health-related behaviors such as physical activity and not smoking. Preferably, these should be implemented as health education programs in schools to help prevent the development of adverse health behaviors among young men. Governmental policies and strategies are required to enable intersectional collaboration and shared responsibility among the education, military and health sectors.

Abstract:
That women served in every military conflict in the history of the United States is common knowledge—but that women performed duties other than nursing during the First World War may come as a surprise to some. Regina Akers, a historian with the Naval History and Heritage Command, describes the service of the more than eleven thousand women that enlisted in the Naval Costal Defense Reserve during the Great War in The Navy’s First Enlisted Women: Patriotic Pioneers. She also details the meaning of their contributions to the war effort both at home and overseas. By working as clerks, typists, stenographers, translators, cryptologists, messengers, and even designers of camouflage for ships, these women volunteers freed up men for sea duty and combat.

Abstract:
This study examined the frequency and characteristics of repeated attempted and completed rape (ACR) incidents reported by newly enlisted male navy personnel (N = 1,146) who participated in a longitudinal study during the transition from civilian to military life. Overall, 13% (n = 144) reported engaging in sexual behavior that approximates legal definitions of ACR since the age of 14. Among those men, most (71%) reperpetrated ACR incidents (M = 6.36, SD = 9.55). Demographic variables were unrelated to perpetration history. Regardless of time period, respondents reported perpetrating primarily completed rather than attempted rape, perpetrating multiple ACR incidents rather than a single incident, using substances to incapacitate victims more frequently than force, and knowing their victim rather than targeting a stranger in completed rape incidents.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates reenlistment behavior of a particular occupational sector of the U.S. Navy. The data set consists of enlisted members with nuclear NECs and 4 to 9 years of service during the 1977-1987 time frame. Specific pay and employment data from the civilian nuclear industry is used for comparison to military pay. Two econometric modelling techniques are employed: logit analysis for individual level data, and time-series cross-sectional analysis for pooled data. The effect on reenlistment probability of changes in relative military and civilian salaries is determined. The results demonstrate the importance of pay to the reenlistment decisions of these men, but indicate that the supply elasticity is relatively low. It is argued that this low responsiveness of retention to pay changes is due not only to the arduous conditions of the work environment, but to the fact that military to civilian pay ratios were uniformly low during the period of observation. Previous research concerning the relationship of retention to pay has aggregated occupational categories and found higher elasticities. This paper shows that retention behavior can be better understood using information about compensation in disaggregated military occupational sectors and specific civilian alternatives. Keywords: Retention; Extension; Nuclear propulsion operators; Pooled time series cross sectional data analysis; Logit analysis; Selective reenlistment bonuses; Turnover; Quits; Economic causes of quits. Abstract:
碩士
輔仁大學
社會工作學系
95
By using narrative method, this study analyzes the process of enlisted men facing loss of love while serving their military obligation. Through this study, we expect to present some key points of counseling enlisted men on the issue of affections by analyzing the progression of their love affairs. The purpose of the research is to make suggestions, as reference for the military mental health staff, on how to help enlisted men to deal with the matter of breakup during their military service. The study analyzes the progression of enlisted men’s love affairs as well. The main subjects of the study include the factors that lead to breakup, the adaptation after the breakup, the personal meaning of reflecting on the breakup, etc. Through analyzing the progression of enlisted men’s love affairs, the findings present some key points of counseling enlisted men on the issue of affections. After interpreting and analyzing the five cases in this study, we found the common path of their love affairs as below and concluded as the following titles: I) The process of romance (1)The phase of togetherness - the days of getting along (2)The phase of separation - the process of breakup (3)The phase of reconstruction - growing up after the loss (4)The phase of rebirth - the reminiscence and reflection II) Influences in the process of adaptation (1)Push and pull - the assistance and hindrances in the army (2)Backing –the capacity of support (3)Healing - ways of adaptation This study is also focused on the unusual military society, proposing the essential points that can better help enlisted men to face the aftermath of being lovelorn in practical ways. I) Ways of counseling: (1)The phase of denial (2)The phase of disorder (3)The phase of reconstruction (4)The phase of rebirth II) Ways of organization management and education: It’s recommended that in the army, there could be more flexibility while assisting enlisted men losing their loves. Also the ways of adaptation should be taught by giving lectures in public which are themed with “being lovelorn in the army” during the time of mental health guidance. And the first line supervisors should be educated to understand the mental experience of the enlisted men suffering breakup in the army and should be educated to help those facing different phases of breakup.

Abstract:
碩士
元智大學
資訊社會學研究所
95
Current study intends to focus on Volunteer Enlisted men from the angle of sociology in the aspect of Social Interaction of sending and receiving Short Message in a closed career environment. Social interaction further involves concepts such as “Cognition”, “Sense” and “Presentation of Self” from which the meaning of Volunteer Enlisted men and Short message is derived. From information obtained in the interviews, current study aims to explore the interaction and interpretation of sender and receiver in the process of writing and reading Short Messages. Several interesting phenomena which include metaphors such as fans, locks and octopus used to describe Short Message. Through the writing and reading of Short Message, Volunteer Enlisted men are able to change personal images. In addition, they expect themselves to keep in touch with their previous friends when being in the military environment through the 70 word presentation of self like flocks of birds who migrate as a group. Furthermore, they expect that Short Message will change their images much like one with different outlooks and will facilitate Social Interaction with their past and current families and friends. One of the arguments proposed in current study is to conceive Short Message as a tool and method for people to express emotions, maintain interpersonal relationships, seek for personal consolation, and expand social interaction. These three types of Social Interaction are the manifestation of a multi-layer proof, the proof of the seal and disclose of memory and the proof of personal emotions. These proofs reveal the inability of Volunteer Enlisted men to adapt in a closed military environment and their continuous eagerness in the inner world for others to care and concern for them.

Wall, Earl V. "Effect of an AIDS prevention program on the incidence of gonorrhea in enlisted men in the 105 Battalion of the Honduran Army." Thesis, 1994. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/36762.

Full text
Abstract:
This study evaluates the effect of an Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) prevention program on the incidence of gonorrhea among the enlisted men in the 105th Battalion of the Honduran Army. The education program was initiated as a result of the high incidence of AIDS in Honduras (more than half of all of the known cases of AIDS in Central America are in Honduras). The AIDS prevention program for this battalion was initiated in July, 1989 and consists of lectures, videos, and printed materials concerning the nature of HIV/AIDS. The program emphasized the use of condoms as a means of avoiding infection: thus the incidence of gonorrhea would also be expected to decrease as a result of the program. The program is presented to new recruits as a portion of their three month basic training in first aid and personal health. Although the AIDS education program provided to the recruits entering the 105th Battalion is similar to that given to recruits entering other battalions, in only the 105th is the program continued after graduation from basic training, where quarterly refresher courses are given throughout the enlisted men's service career. This retrospective observational study compares the prevalence of gonorrhea among the 105th and three other military units that did not receive ongoing AIDS educational program. The prevalence of gonorrhea was used as an indicator of the effectiveness of the program because its prime route of infection (intimate sexual contact) is the same as HIV, and because gonorrhea is easily detected. The study covered the period between January 1990 and December 1993. The data in the study were provided by the Honduran Army and consists of summaries of the results of periodic inspections conducted by military physicians on all enlisted men at approximately 6 week intervals. In these inspections, the enlisted men are medically examined for the presence of signs of gonorrhea. The data include the date of the inspection, the number of soldiers examined, and the number cases of gonorrhea detected. In the Honduran Army, the incidence of gonorrhea has declined significantly in the last four years. It is speculated that at least three contributing factors are responsible: the free distribution of condoms; the increasing awareness and fear of AIDS; and, the specific AIDS education campaigns presented to the enlisted men. The results of this study indicate that significant reductions in the prevalence of gonorrhea occurred in all military units studied and that the rate of reduction in the unit that received the ongoing educational campaign was greater than in the units that did not receive the educational campaign. The study indicates that the provision of ongoing AIDS education to the Honduran enlisted soldiers results in a decrease in the prevalence of gonorrhea. The study also demonstrated the feasibility of conducting research on sexually transmitted diseases in military units.
Graduation date: 1994

Abstract:
W. H. Younce of Ashe County, an admitted “Lincolnite,” attempts to flee over the mountains to Tennessee to avoid conscription-but he is betrayed by a young woman he has been courting and is taken by the Home Guard. Enlisted in the 58th North Carolina, he tries to desert and is again betrayed. Time and again, he deserts, is captured, and deserts again-till at last he makes it to Tennessee. He is one of thousands of North Carolina troops to desert, many after significant service, congregating in the mountain counties. The crisis is so acute that Confederate generals begin shooting deserters-even those who, like John Redman, simply take unauthorized leave to harvest crops and then return to the army. Younce recounts lynchings by the Home Guard of suspected Unionists and deserters, including one man who survives hanging and joins the U.S. Army. The nephew of one of the hanged men tracks down and murders five of the men who lynched his uncle.

Abstract:
In 1914, the Indian Army was not prepared either conceptually or materially to participate in a high-intensity conventional war. It was an occupation force geared for policing purposes and launching punitive expeditions across the frontiers of India. Before the First World War, the industrializing/industrialized nations of West Europe depended on mass armies based on short-service conscripts. The Indian Army comprised of long-service volunteers numbering to 180,000 men. Sepoys and sowars were enlisted for a service of 3 years, but with the option of continuing serving for 18 years. The recruits were trained for 10 months and then they joined the regiments. After the end of 18 years’ service, they became eligible for pension. Most Indian soldiers signed for long service. For the regiments that enlisted in north India, accommodation for families of the personnel was fixed at 5 per cent of the strength. The Indian soldiers lived in hovels made of earth, which were filthy and dilapidated, hence, unsanitary. Overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of the Indian soldiers’ lines caused diseases such as tuberculosis and so on....

Abstract:
Thomas Fanning Wood has ambitions of being a doctor, but his father, a builder, forbids him to attend the University of North Carolina, where young men “dress like gentlemen and act like rowdies.” But enlisted in the Wilmington Rifle Guards and bound for the front, Wood succumbs to fever and winds up at Moore Hospital in Richmond-one of 26 hospitals that handle the 75,000 casualties from area battles. Dr. Otis Frederick Manson recruits Wood to be a wardmaster and oversees his training as a doctor. Ninety days after passing his exam, Wood is made assistant surgeon and performs field amputations.

Abstract:
Overall approximately 152,000 Irishmen and a few thousand Irish women enlisted in the British armed forces during the First World War, joining 58,000 Irish men who were already serving or were army reservists. This was an impressive number but compared poorly with rates in Great Britain. For many years there was a perception that it was only ‘Loyal’ Ulster which provided recruits. However, it is clear, from the important works of Patrick Callan and David Fitzpatrick, that recruitment was nationwide. The support of John Redmond, leader of the Irish Party, was essential in mobilising Catholic, Nationalist support for the British war effort.

Abstract:
This paper discusses the training given to the personnel of the Marine Engineering Branch of the Royal Navy to enable them to maintain and operate the main propulsion gas turbines fitted in the new generation of warships. Concentrating on the aspects appertaining to gas turbines, the paper describes the training given to both officers and enlisted men during their initial career training both ashore and at sea, and also outlines the training undertaken by personnel to prepare them for appointments to specific ships. Finally, the methods of validating this training to ensure that it meets the requirements of the Fleet are described.

Abstract:
The YS2000 program is a 73 meter length and 10.5 meter width all composite Corvette class vessel. It displaces 640 metric tons when fully equipped and drafts 2.5 meters. It is to be crewed by 18 officers and 25 enlisted men. It is a CODOG propulsion system supplied by Vericor Power Systems, with two MTU 16V 2000 M90 diesels and four TF50A gas turbine engines. Both the diesels and gas turbines are connected to a pair of MA-107 SBS gearboxes that run two 125 SII KaMeWa waterjets. The Visby is designed to be difficult to detect by enemy using radar, infrared, hydro-acoustic monitoring or any other sensor system. The Visby has been in development In Sweden since 1999. To date, four craft have been constructed and sea trailed out of the five totals. The fifth ship is on schedule to complete construction and sea trials later in the 2006 year. Many refinements to the overall propulsion package and related supporting systems have been incorporated since the first ship “Visby” has been sea trailed and since put in service. This paper will review various areas of the propulsion package, explaining the challenges that had to be overcome. The areas of interest will include: the FADEC digital engine control, the exhaust & inlet systems, the turbine engine and starting system, engine room cooling and turbine engine enclosures. The paper will focus on some of the before and after results and attempts to highlight the specific challenges that had to be overcome.

It is to be crewed by 18 officers and 25 enlisted men. It is a CODOG propulsion system supplied by Vericor Power Systems (VPS), with two MTU 16V 2000 M90 diesels and four TF50A gas turbine engines. Both the diesels and gas turbines are connected to a pair of MA-107 SBS gearboxes that run two 125 SII KaMeWa water jets. To date, five craft have been constructed and sea trialed. Many refinements to the overall propulsion package and related supporting systems have been revisited and incorporated since the first “Visby” ship has been sea trialed and further entered in to service. This paper will focus on various areas of the entire gas turbine propulsion management system (GTPMS) that had earlier exhibited some operational issues and will review the challenges that had to be overcome in order to remedy them. The areas of interest will be related to one of the several TF50A turbine engines modifications, and then further review other key related supporting systems, to include the installation of the hydraulic engine starter and water wash system, combustor enclosure and the engines related exhaust and inlet systems issues, to include problems experienced as a result of some of the early initial designs. In conclusion this paper will update the subject topics the findings previously presented and again focus on some of the before and after results and attempt to detail some of the specific challenges that had to be overcome to make this one of the finest propulsion packages in this class of ship.
