Full textThis research based on both a clinical and a qualitative approach aims to provide both a description and a model. It explores the potential role of self assessment in in-service secondary school teacher education courses to modify beliefs and practices concerning assessment and furthermore to change the pedagogical paradigm. Part 1, based on a complex approach to reality, brings to light the "comprehensive" assessment paradigm encompassing formative assessment and "evaluation formatrice" taking into account the implication of the teaching learning participants in the assessment process. Ways in which self assessment plays a role in changing beliefs and in regulating the activity are examined and give rise to a model. Part 2 analyses the contents and organisation of a teacher training programme on assessment and its ricochet effect. Teacher trainers, by applying a process of self-assessment to their own teaching practices, gradually aim to enable teachers to assess themselves so that they, in turn, will encourage their pupils to do the same. Part 3 analyses the effects of self assessment introduced into an in service education course for secondary school teachers. The analysis of their discourse at several points in the duration of their training and longitudinally, shows the changes which occur in their conceptions of assessment and in their practice. Participants who are shown to change their pedagogical paradigm, are those who consciously engage in a process of self-assessment, leading to changes in their vision of the teacher's role. This research aims at contribution to the development of knowledge in the area of self-assessment and at providing teacher educators with tools to analyse their practice

Full textIn a meritocratic society, which reserves its most desirable positions for its most deserving individuals, school assessment occupies a central position. By its function of selection, assessment leads indeed to the distribution of individuals over different specialisations and, in fine, to their various professional statuses. In line with current legislation, it is teachers who are responsible for carrying out school assessment. The exploratory enquiry leads us to focus on teacher judgement: the construction of teachers’ educational judgements is not based on the simple application of evaluation techniques but entails ordinary means of judgement. One of the aspects of teacher judgement is its being constantly subjected to the possibility of criticism, coming from various categories of individuals. This research consists in an analysis of what, within school activity, enables teachers to arm themselves against criticism, to anticipate it and to manage it.A study of the scientific literature shows that the question of teacher judgement emerges as a scientific problem during the 20th century, out of an empirical observation of its weaknesses. Successive research has standardised little by little from the normative view to construct explanatory models of educational assessment as a social phenomenon, by exploiting the resources of the social sciences. A more recent movement, the pursuit of which this work takes up, adopts a more overall posture, leaving a wide margin for the subjectivity of teachers. The latter, building up their judgement during interaction experienced in the framework of their day-to-day work, two sociological currents are at play: firstly, pragmatic sociology, of which one of the central concepts, the test, allows for the description and analysis of the work of defining students within the teaching framework; secondly the symbolic interactionism of Erving Goffman. The gathering of qualitative data is inspired by ethnographic methods. The work of judgement of 11 junior secondary school teachers from the Lille metropolitan area was observed and discussed in interviews leading to exploration of practices. The analysis of data favours inductive reasoning based on the grounded theory method. Results are ordered according to two main ideas: Firstly, the fact that the students are qualified within in the framework of tests, in the pragmatic sociological sense of the word, that is to say interactions aimed at an agreement on the qualification of the human being or object. The tests are conducted with reference to principles of justice and by engaging objects or individuals in the situation that can be requalified during the test. The qualification of students demands therefore, on a teacher’s part, the constitution of a sufficiently strong system on which to rely during tests, if he or she wishes to guarantee the legitimacy of his/her judgment.Secondly, among all the tests for qualifying students, the assessment carried out by teachers is an attempt to industrialise their ordinary judgment. School assessment is made up of an assortment of specific tests which are difficult to challenge without disturbing a theoretical and practical construct that is both coherent and robust. In this way, assessment tests constitute an unavoidable means for the organising of teaching. These tests define procedures, offer scales of value, models of reference, a database of actions, a professional grammar, which is developed in a world oriented towards efficiency, productivity, measurement, objectivity. This attraction to an industrialised system can however block the ordinary function of judgment of the teacher, while de-legitimizing other means at his/her disposal to know his/her student and to construct learning situations

Full textThis thesis would like to highlight the factors which assist the understanding of the continuity of school marking in elementary schools. It attempts to outline the teachers' "marking relationships", i. E. All the behaviors and practices in pedagogical marking that they implement in elementary schools. The teachers' discourses indicate the conviction that stimulation, emulation and competition are intrinsic functions of school marking; however, many contradictions influence the act of assessing. This research postulates the existence of a causal link between school marking and school form. Born more than a century ago, the school form determines paradoxical educational situations: the requirements of a competitive society and conformity determined by the "tradition" of practices, in which teachers try to accommodate their discourses and their practices

Full textThis research interrogates expertise developed by the teachers of the secondary schools in and through the practice of their teaching. It adopts a cognitive definition of expertise that considere problems solving as its indicator and well as the principal processus of its development implying the mediation of the socio-professional context. The protocol presents in writing, three class situations where incidents occur. The 108 participants trained on teaching or not, have between 0 and 240 months of experience in the teaching. They gave in writing, their diagnosis of the situations and their solutions to the problems that they discerned. The results show that the most experienced teachers' representations of situations have some common aspects and that the solutions from the most experienced teachers are in consistency with their representations. We find that teachers who have between 0 and 5 years of experience are bound to superficial aspects of the situations and that the solutions from them are incoherent with their representations. These results are already known in research. In the last group, those who were trained express diagnoses and solutions sometimes recalling those of the most experienced ones To determine how training and experience influence diagnoses of the situations and the proposals of solutions, six independent variables have been estimated. The best models have very weak explanatory power, but this research revealed their meaningful impact on some modalities of the diagnosis and solutions proposed from 5 out the 6 explanatory variables

Full textThis research focuses on the evolution of the profession of teaching and research at the University, and focuses on the evaluation approaches for the quality of their activities in educational science. Various factors explain that quality has become one of the major issues of higher education: Massification from the political will to provide access to the university for the greatest number, internationalization under the effect of the Bologna process and the creation of the European area of higher education. This research tries to answer the main question: “What concept the faculty-member maintains has about the processes of quality in higher education? And why?”. And we use a qualitative approach based on interviews with a sample to know the way in which they represent this concept. In addition, we find through the results of our research, that the concept of quality is a polysemic tem based on the official culture and the own culture of the faculty member at the university. Furthermore, today this concept is at the heart of a lot of discourse on the improvement of higher education. What does it actually cover for those who use it? Faculty member in education have the interest in developing idea to be included in the definition of this concept. In addition, quality could be defined by a confrontation between the needs of students, faculty member priorities, and needs of the professional community. Moreover, assessment of the quality of the activities of teaching and research differs from one interview to another. A lecturer does not have the same vision of a Professor. We note that the development of a specific faculty member’s activities improves the profession either by the research component, or by the administrative component, or finally by the component of teaching and learning

Full textThe hypothesis which I would like to bring about at the beginning of this survey is on the following : It is not the training experience which in itself is the deciding factor, but the training drive. To be more precise, it is not the enrollment in a training program which can alter the course of events but the teacher's formulation or teaching staff's questioning. To emphasize my thesis, I have made up four groups of teachers : the first group (Experimental Group) is which made up of fifteen teaching staff having requested a training session on the usage of the national primary school evaluations for eight year olds, following the next school year with the same group of pupils and the above staff succeeding in obtaining their teacher's training education. The second group is made up of teachers who have requested to be enrolled but have not been accepted. The third group is made up of teachers which have not wished to be trained and having nevertheless been officially enrolled in this training session. The fourth group is made up of teachers who have not asked anything and who will not be enrolled. 564 pupils (around 140 per group) have been evaluated at three successive periods, during one year. This has given me to bring about a comparative analysis, and draw some conclusions on the influential commitment with or without training on pupils' scholastic performance

Full textThis dissertation thesis addresses the skills of future teachers in scientific disciplines of Burkina Faso secondary schools in evaluating information from the Web. Although studies on evaluating information from the Web have been carried out in schools from Western countries, those skills are poorly documented in African countries, particularly among Burkina Faso future teachers, hence the need to know how future teachers in scientific disciplines of Burkina Faso secondary schools evaluate information from the Web. This results in the following three research objectives: 1) to determine the objects assessed by future teachers in scientific disciplines of Burkina Faso secondary schools; 2) to determine the indicators evaluated by future teachers in scientific disciplines of Burkina Faso secondary schools; 3) to identify the strengths and weaknesses of future teachers in scientific disciplines of Burkina Faso secondary schools to evaluate information from the Web. In order to achieve these three research objectives, a qualitative approach was used. Eight future teachers in scientific disciplines of Burkina Faso secondary schools, who were completing the theoretical training at the Institut des sciences de Ouagadougou (IDS), participated to the research. Each of them individually performed five information evaluation tasks and then immediately participated in a recorded explicitation interview. A thematic analysis was done using the data transcribed in verbatim. The results of that analysis revealed that participants faced difficulties to evaluate information from the web. The success rate in completing the evaluation tasks is low. Actually, only two of the eight participants successfully completed four of the five evaluation tasks. Overall, only three objects (source, author, information) from four have been evaluated. Among them, information is the most evaluated object. Regarding the fourth object to be evaluated, the support object, it was not considered by the participants. In terms of indicators, the « relevance of information » is by far the most evaluated. The results also reveal that each participant has evaluated essentially the information object and the « relevance of information » indicator. Moreover, this thesis suggests that when a participant evaluates several objects and makes numerous suitable comments on these objects, its ability to succeed a task increases.

Full textThe purpose of the thesis is to identify the values declared by 191 teachers of music in junior high schools, to study the link between these values and the history of the subject, to examine the personal history of these teachers as well as their relation to knowledge of music. The collection of samples of official texts, the methods of investigation (questionnaires, interviews after observations), the analysis of discourse of these teachers and that of official texts, and the principles of categorising have, at times, enabled the inference of values, at others, the collection of values explicitly declared. Whatever the way of dealing with the question of values might be – be it implicitly or explicitly- teachers give priority to moral and ethical values over aesthetic and intellectual values. There is some tension (some sort of interference) between moral and aesthetic values; this tension turns into hesitation between subjective and objective bases for their judgments of value when it comes to assessing the musical object. For teachers interviewed in a personal capacity, the general and specific criteria for their judgments of value are linked to the feeling of the receiver as well as to the composition, adopting therefore a subjectivist attitude. However, as teachers, they require from their pupils an objectivist attitude. These teachers, who are non relativist, non postmodern, would, therefore, be rather ‘Goodmanian' in their relationship to the aesthetic when confronted to pupils, and rather ‘Kantian' in a personal capacity. The training they have had seems to have had more influence upon their declared values than competitive examinations or national curricula

Full textIn both utterly different contexts, China and Quebec, what are the perceptions, practices and expectations of teachers with regard to support for teachers? How Supervisors accompany individually and collectively teachers? What obstacles facing the accompaniment of teachers? What similarities and what differences between coaching teachers in China and Quebec? This memory will answer these questions from a survey by questionnaire to teachers working in several levels of school. In China, there were N = 118 participants who voluntarily responded to our study, and the number is N = 125 for Quebec. The theoretical framework of the interconnected model of professional growth Clarke & Hollingsworth (2002) suggests that the changes of teachers occur in different areas with external domain, internal domain and the field of results. The factorial analyses for the external domain of individual practices show teachers from China and Quebec share the same factors, with a slight difference in the statements. In the external domain of collective practices, the factors are different from one context to another. Then there is the internal area, where participants of the two contexts have the same needs and the same wishes to achieve a sense of personal and collective efficacy. Finally, it is also the case for the field of results: teachers of both territories share contribution factors and obstacles encountered during the process. Key words: Supervision, opinions, China, Quebec

Full textA better taking into account of the school stories of the future teachers, and what they had produced, would bring a more professional formation ? The construction of knowledge and professional competences in the process of training of teachers shows singular characteristics analyzed under the time frame, activity and socialization perspectives. Forming themselves in the same kind of institution where they are going to exert later as professionals, the school biography of the future teachers would participate in the present training process. How the acquisitions of experience related to the past life in the school and to the present training experienced by the future teachers start interaction with the dynamics of professional training ? The analysis of teachers' syllabus of all the French IUFM has permitted to describe - at prescript level - the importance given to the school biography of the future teachers distinguishing four main tendencies. Later, a case study of two contrasting IUFM has permitted to describe the dynamic of training situations - as they are experienced and acknowledged by the professors and future teachers - as well as to identify the modes of taking into account of the school biography in the process of initial training of teachers in France

Full textThis qualitative research, documentary style, focuses on the reform of teacher evaluation in France. These went on strike Dec. 15, 2011 to protest against its application planned for September 2012. This thesis offers a reading grid for the evaluation of teachers from different points of view raised in the press during that strike. Contextualist analysis models from Brouwers (1997), which was associated with the typology of the seven worlds of justification by Boltanski (1991), helped to highlight the value code that justifies the different positions, points of resistance and the points of support for possible negotiations. The results show that this project is possible under an obligation of competence, not a performance obligation, if combined with training for all and if it makes a large part to the autonomy of stakeholders.

Full textAlthough it is well known that teachers play a key role in the academic success of students, it remains unclear how teaching quality is operationalized and assessed within teachers’ selection practices. This Master thesis identifies the knowledges (K), skills (S), abilities (A) and other characteristics (O) that are sought-after when recruiting a new primary or secondary level teacher as well as the instruments that are favored to assess these characteristics. A human resources representative from 20 French School Districts (Commissions scolaires) from Quebec answered a questionnaire designed for this study. Results show that School districts have multiple requirements when selecting a teacher but that they particularly value knowledge of classroom management strategies, subject matter knowledge, oral communication, pedagogical skills and classroom management skills. The classic interview appears among the instruments that are most frequently used for teachers’ selection. The most valid selection instruments, however, seem to be scarcely used. Correlations reveal a significant relation between the recruiter’s perceptions of his/her use of the most valid selection instruments and those that they actually use. Discussion focuses on the ways School districts can improve the selection of teachers, considering recommended practices emerging from the personnel selection literature. The opportunity to consider some requirements of the School districts as competences to be further developed through professional supervision and continuous training is also discussed. Keywords: teacher selection, teaching quality, exigencies, selection instruments, professional development.

Full textThe question of a professionalization by training is fashionable and the discourses do not miss to evoke this professionalization of the teachers. The main question that can be asked is to know wether high school teachers in Burkina Faso are really involved in professionalization process today as discourses tend to say. Using three modes of investigation (semi-directed interviews in form of explanation interviews, document analysis and direct observations) and through a qualitative content analysis, this research shows that the increasing of number of trained teachers, the yearly recruiting of teachers to be trained at École Normale Supérieure (ENS), and at the Institut des Sciences (IDS), the activities of in-service training introduced by the educational picture framers, are sound approaches likely to contribute to the professionalization of teachers in Burkina Faso. Nevertheless, the current trainings are insufficient and inadequate as they don't always consider the didactic aspects liable to help both teachers and students to perceive « flavour of the knowledege ». In addition of the absence of reflective practice, the procedural commitments which teachers have to undergo especially in didactic transposition of contents, all constitute obstacles to their professionalization

Full textHow does anyone teaching French take up reading a text written by a secondary school pupil? What are the questions involved in the very peculiar role that has been handed down to him and which compels him to hesitate between two attitudes: the reader’s and the examiner’s. The presented research studies the tension between these two behaviours, tension which lies in the depths of one of the secondary school French teacher’s regular activities: marking fictional essays written by pupils. The analysis is interested in the “traces of correction”, that is to say the teacher’s comments and his re-writing of the pupil’s texts. The experimental devices implemented thus enable us to suggest a typology of the examiner’s behaviours and try to understand some characteristics of the text expected by a teacher in response to a writing instruction. In the end, it is a question of getting to know better what a specific professional task consists in – a task in which subjectivity and standards are implemented but in which most of the time they remain implicit

Full textThis survey describes the role of inspection in primary education and considers inspection in its efficiency as regards to essential questions relating to school. It examines two aspects of the inspector's mission : valuation and training. It surrounds valuation by precising criterion, fonctions and qualificatives referring to it ; it sets some problematic aspects which regard inspection in a valuative purpose ; it elucidates the concept of training according to etymological, historical, institutonal as well as psychological and scientific approaches in order to aim training as the transforming of representation, points of view, behaviours and practising. Inspectoral devices registered in an experimental preparing are described, analysed, brought in question. The elements of analysis, as regards the reality of inspection in its ideological evolution, as regards its link to training, as regards its place in the relation to knowledge that child establishes at school, lead to the following theses : if the act of inspecting has no longer any sense as a mere control, it still has a role to play for the teacher, in the institution, provided that it's inscribed in other logics such as valuation, intervening and mediation to knowledge. New devices enabling to situate teachers in an interactive autoformation proceeding are to be invented. Thus, the inspector gathers varied competences inscribed in a relation of help, a guidance and a mediation so propicious as to allow him to become an author in a system he contributes to pilot. This new aspect of inspection and the purpose of its action lead to reconsider both its denomination, its missions, some structures, in fact all what - in a prospective matter - this survey tends to

Full textThis doctoral thesis falls within the framework of assessment ( see G. De Landsheere 1979 et 1980; G. Scallon 2000; Lussier 1992; D. Lussier and C. Turner 1995 ; L. Allal 1989. . . ), of communicative competence in French (S. Moirand 1990; H. G. Widdowson 1981; M. Canale and M. Swain 1980. . . ) and of verbal interaction (see C. Kerbrat-Orecchioni 1998). It purports to study the problems associated with the teaching and learning of oral communication, its assessment and its practice among learners of French in Teacher Training Colleges in Ghana. It seeks particularly to examine the modalities put in place for the assemment of proficiency in oral communication in an external examination context. It endeavours to analyse the method of assessment, the conduct of teacher-examiners and the communicative behaviour of learner-candidates in a face to face interaction. It also examines and identifies communicative difficulties and strategies used in overcoming these difficulties. With regard to data collection, a questionnaire relative to pre- training college and college practices of teaching and learning and also of assessing oral French was established and addressed to learners and teachers alike. The study equally takes into account the oral communication, test items and recording of verbal interactions between panel of examiners and candidates. The findings of this research will contribute to reflections on different aspects in the area of assessment namely, instructions, criteria, nature of test items or conduct. The study suggests the adoption of an interactive approach to the teaching and learning, a regular assessment and constant practice of oral communication within and outside the classroom setting

Full textThe investigation carried out near the teachers of the town of Taza and its areas relates to the designs and the practices of the stop-assessment (moment of evaluation and support) in the bilingual teachers charged to teach French in the Moroccan public primary schools and on their teacher training. This study attempts to determine the factors preventing the application of a productive evaluation of the act of teaching/training of French within the primary education. The recorded results revealed a deficiency of their teacher training: a lacunar initial formation, an irregular continuous formation and a car formation almost absent for arbitrary criteria. This work makes it possible to the teachers to be informed on the principal theoretical bases of the stop-assessment, namely the formative evaluation, the pedagogy differentiated and pedagogy from support to enrich their knowledge and to manage consequently to overcome the difficulties encountered for the development and the practice the stop-assessment. Starting from our personal experiment and official writings (teaching intentions, new Moroccan national charter), we present suggestions concerning the stop-assessment and the teacher training of the Moroccans teachers. Admittedly, in the absence of a fertile continuous formation, the teacher is invited, in spite of the obstacles met, to cross the step towards a car suitable formation to bring up to date his knowledge and to better follow scientific progress

Full textThis actionresearch consists in designing, implementing and evaluating the continuous teacher education programme 'Ecole multilingue'. The programme is aimed at preschool and primary school teachers and concerns the pedagogy of multilingualism. During the programme, video excerpts showing language learning practices at school were studied, multilingual projects were designed and implemented in the classes of the participants and discussions and exchanges took place within ten monthly meetings. The research questions are the following: What is the professional development that is realised throughout the programme? What are the characteristics of the programme that have afforded this development? The research positions itself within the framework of socioconstructivist and sociocultural theories. The chosen methodology draws upon thematic analysis, grounded theory, analysis of interactions and analysis of practice. It implies the collection of different types of data: questionnaire, videotapes and transcriptions of the training meetings, logbook of the trainerresearcher, videotapes and descriptions of innovative practices. During the research process, description and analysis grids are used and designed, and research results are cut across. A reflexion about the double role of a trainer and a researcher is developed. The analysis reveals the representations about language learning, multilingual practices and institutional context, as well as the ways of analysing pupils' learning processes, coconstructed by the participants. It characterises the innovative multilingual practices that the participants have developed in their classes, and it shows the process of accompanyingchallenging by the trainer. It furthermore brings out the ways in which the different elements of the programme have contributed to the teachers' development. It finally may inform a prospective, improved training programme

Full textThe research aims at exploring an alternative approach to a standard-based certification assessment used in teacher training and qualification. The underpinning question of the thesis is the following: can a reflective project approach enhanced by web 2.0 tools and qualitative assessment help develop the professional skills needed by future language teachers when still at university? The empirical research has been conducted with three student classes. The theoretical basis and the operationalisation of the research question have thus emerged as the research was being developed. The gathered corpus is varied (logbooks, professional writings, community blogs, collective interviews). Both the qualitative analysis and computer-aided discourse analysis bring to light marked elements pointing to the relevance of the chosen approach

Full textAccording to A. Jorro (2002) a teacher's evaluative statement is part of his professional gesture that is to say resulting from the teacher's underlying action by his incorporate background, his personal values and especially his professional ethos and his attitude towards the pupils. If we consider this behaviour as taken for granted and if we submit them to Joas's theory of Human actions' creative nature (Joas, 1999) based on intentionality and adjustments, the study attempts to show their consequences on the pupils' discursive positioning. The pupils' discursive positioning is studied by the use of registers mainly handled by the pupils themselves in terms of interaction (Goffman 1973 & 1974) intercomprehension (Habermas, 1987) and interpretation (Ricœur, 1969 & 1992). His study is based on five filmed sequences showing five 6th year's Primary School teachers with different profiles working in the same school. Each sequence shows the teacher doing corrections either in French or in Mathematics. The observation scale of evaluative statement is composed of linguistic indicators such as the teachers' favourite recourse to subjectivemes (Kerbrat-Orecchioni, 2006), to linguistic modalities (Ducrot & Schaffeur, 1995) and to perlocutionary intentions (Vermersch, 2007)

Full textThe research aims to show the influence of training upon conceptions and the assessing practices of non vocational secondary school teachers in the Gabonese educational system. It pursues a broader objective that of the identification and analysis of mobilized competences in the teachers' work. It also takes into account the role of experience in the training of the latter. First of all it raises a set of questions on the experiences of training, the conceptions and assessing practices, this set of questions emphasizes factors that can act on teacher' perception of evaluation in the classroom – standard terminology, link between practice and theory, mobilized knowledge – From these categories, it is suggested a framework of questions about the teachers' viewpoint regarding the origin of their know-how in this field – initial training, continued training, experience-based training. The methodology that is resorted to consists in establishing, from exploring interviews, a categorization of the group that is studied, namely non vocational secondary-school teachers in subgroups – trained/untrained, old timers/newcomers – and investigating a representative sample of this group via a questionnaire and a test based on the marking of secondary school pupils' work. The findings though incomplete and inconclusive show that the knowledge acquired thanks to training is being eroded over the years ; it also puts forward a widespread tendency to have a preference for injunction-based evaluation, it highlights the significant role of experience and the varying effects of continued training. All of these observations evidence the problems raised by the assessment of teachers' training
