Full textThis research deals with the teaching and learning of a foreign language in an exolinguistic setting. The learning situation analysed concerns the teaching of french in a scolastic setting in thailand. The central hypothesis is that the exolinguistic setting, when characterised by strong cultural distancing, has a marked impact on the teaching and learning processes, and that in such contexts, the latter are conditioned by the source culture. The mode of investigation adopted gives priority to interpretation of data obtained through field research. The results of the socio-cultural analysis (parts 1 & 2) show how attitudes and perceptions are moulded by the source culture and also how the choice of pedagogic tasks emanates from these, rather than from curriculum aims and objectives or from any foreign language method or methodology. The didactic analysis of observable behaviour (part 3), attempts to reveal the sociocultural rules operative in classroom interaction. Models specific to the analysis of communication in a pedagogical setting are applied. The conclusions reaffirm the importance of taking the cultural specificity of teaching and learning contexts into account

Full textLanguage is seen as a system of options, the individual elements of which are understood in relation to their use in communication. Language learning is seen a process, the eventual construction of grammatical functions in the individual learner dependent on sufficient encounters with language in authentic situations in order to see patterns developing as well as on interaction of the learner with le language itself. The construction of individual functions develops over a period of tinme, their consolidation dependent on recognition of patterns gleaning of examples and use. Listening to the language can provide the adult learner of a second language with the necessary input. The period for the construction of individual functions, however, can be shortened by encouraging the learner to use his analytic powers on examples taken from context and by incorporating generalisations about the language into the pedagogic material prepared by the teachers. The s. A. P. A. G. (service d'apprentissage et perfectionnement en autonomie guidee), a service independant of any classroom teaching, is the application of the above theories

Full textThe didatic dyad is a relation established between a teacher and a single student. In this research, we analyze dyades within a French foreign language course observed in a private training institute. The study is based on a corpus of four sessions with four different adult students. Each student had completed about thirty hours of course work at the time of the recordings. We initially analyze the framework, the scene of the courses and the roles of the actors through the sociology goffmanienne. Indeed these dyadic courses are not conducted in rooms adapted to groups (classes) but in rooms of the size of an office conceived for this relation. Ethnomethodology is used to collect the ethnomethodes implemented by the actors in order to conform to the dyadic situation and to make it function as a didactic situation. Following this first approach to the dyad, the corpus is analyzed using the tools of conversational analysis in order to study the actions of teaching/learning and to see how teacher and student co-build their roles. Lastly, we analyze the phases of variation identified in the interaction. They are periods during which the social character of the student and the theacher appear in the didactic interaction. These periods, which are caused by a too intense cognitive load for the student and the monotony of the rythms of interactions, generate changes in the contents and the management of the interaction, in particular the distribution of the turn taking. Thus, we study the dyadic relation in a complete way from the perspective which includes the management of the relation of the roles and the face of each participant

Full textLeaning a second language in an institutional setting implie a specific type of language activity. The research then must deal with the acquisition of second languages in a "natural" setting, and with the "grammaticalisation" processes. In both kinds of settings, learners have a mealinguistic activity which one must study if one wants to guide it through efficient metalinguistic teaching. In order to study this activity, it is necessary to analyse learners' verbalisation and to compare them with their linguistic activities both in comprehension and in production. On thus needs a theoretical linguistic description of the two systems (source and target). The particular field which is studied here is the aspect tense domain (passe simple passe compose imparfait and english preterit), where the different kinds of lexical verbal constructions are taken into account. One can then study the possible efficiency of teaching in the processes of acquisition learning, and the possible role of a type of mealanguage which would be adapted both to linguistic reality and to the melalinguistic representations of learners

Full textThis thesis deals with the question of migrant populations in France having to acquire French as a second language, but also with the various implications it may have for such populations to use a second language in their everyday lives. We decided to focus on a specific part of the French migrant population, the one composed of intellectuals (scholars, university professors, writers). Indeed, such a population is presumably highly motivated to learn the language of the country they have migrated to. However, some resistances can be observed as to use the second language in general, and particularly, to conceptualize and create in this language. The resistances to acquire a second language are not necessarily linked to learning difficulties but in some cases are to be understood as a mere refusal to acquire and assimilate a second language. In fact, this refusal is not so much a matter of learning but a refusal that the second language becomes the first one. The French migrants having to use French as a second language may fear that their first language (mother tongue) would be replaced by the second language. Furthermore, the French migrants may consider that assimilating and speaking a second language might lead to integrating the group speaking this second language, which can be disturbing for the feeling of their identies

Full textThe aim of this thesis lies in the evaluation of the contributions of the augusto boal theater and a range of concepts developed from short therapies (ta, gestalt therapy, nlp) within the framework of teaching french for specific purposes. The experimentation was carried out in a german polytechnic, an engineering college wich takes students with or without school-leaving qualifications (abitur) who show signs of a complex with regard to university studies. The teaching method had a double aim: a) to improve attitudes towards knowledge and how to learn; b) to enable the students to refer to their knowledge at a later stage, here, in a professionnal context. The thesis seeks to show how these methods of dramatization and analysis of games offer the possibility of attaining the two levels mentioned above

Full textWithin a psycholinguistic frame, the thesis is focused on the part of dual interactions in institutional context (d. I. I. C) between a native and a learner for the second language acquisition. From the viewpoint of cognitive psychology, the study is aimed at the identification of acquisitional factors and mechanisms and of the various types of previous knowledge language. Acquisition is mainly considered as a by-product of comprehension and production activities. This thesis is made up three parts: a theorical first part, an experimental second part and a longitudinal study

Full textThis thesis is the theory elaborated from a practical experience in pedagogy born of a research "in situ", started fifteen years ago at the "college de samatan". Condidering that the function of school is not only of teaching but also of securing learning s kills and that teaching which is at the service of learning must answer the pupils' requirements, the "socio-pratique" methodology thus elaborated aims at making the foreingn language an instrument of communication at the service of the social group the class is. The teaching of spanish will therefore consist in building up and making alive the foreign language class modelled on a social group and the functions required by the group's life will lead to the creation of institutions, these functions being undertaken by individuals. Within these mutual support and communication groups, the individuals have to play different roles hence a rotation enforced by the teacher who is at the core of a network of functions the assumption of which enables to reach objectives (defined by observable behaviours). Objectives of "structuration" (sensorimotor and cognitive ones) and objective of orientation (affective ones). Thus the centre of initiatives and actions shifts from the teacher to the pupil whose activity is essential to the acquisition of knowledge as it has been proved by the conclusions of genetic psychology. However the pupil benfits from the teacher's contribution essential to make learning easier. Yet in addition to his role as a specialist in the subject he teaches, the teacher is led to become in such classes an animator, an educator and sometines a tutor. This teacher-pupil relationship takes its whole meaning within evaluating processes (formative and summative ones) with the purpose of securing each pupil a dynamogenic accomplishment through the taking into account of errors in order to improve the quality of learning (auto-regulation or feed-back)
