Guérin, Laura. "Manger ensemble : mourir ensemble : ethnographie du repas collectif en Ehpad." Paris, EHESS, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EHES0121.
Full textBased on an ethnographic approach, this dissertation work constitutes an inquiry into the upholding of collective meals within French nursing homes dedicated to the care of dependent elderly populations (Ehpad). Recommended by public health policies and the professional literature as a token of care and sociability, the communal meal is none the less a daily trial within establishments, which commands practical adjustments in order to match, to the extent possible, the social expectations it crystallizes. Because each day it requires residents to be gathered, concentrates community living, we examine it as a particular socializing arrangement for the dependent elderly population. Hence the two lines of analysis we have favored. Firstly, we intend to grasp the Ehpad communal meal as the result of a specific labor: a set of ways of doing and saying that affecl residents, the focal aims of which laying with incorporating food and maintaining social arrangements. Secondly, by analyzing professional embarrassment that this work involves, as well as matching forms ol oppositions on residents' part, we overcome the mere medicalization of behaviors. Inquiry materials comprise participant observation in three establishments as an intern within the restaurant services, together with an analysis of professional best practices written by the French higher health authority and the French national agency for the evaluation of social and medico-social services. Through a review of the biomedical literature, apprehending the gap between norms and practices is placed in a widen reference space, where undernourishment is being built in a scholarly fashion. At last, a historical perspective of the Ehpad meal, through considering late XlXth century hospice meals as well as resulting medical theories on great-age nutrition, brings out the evolutions of elderly's treatment through consumptions. Across this dissertation, we have inquired into the government of bodies, in its disposition to produce hopes as foi maintaining the material and symbolic life of individuals known to be vulnerable and to soon face death

Full textIn Lebanon sectarian affiliation plays an important political and social role. This study analyses how interreligious relations contribute to the construction of national unity in this civil-war-torn country. Interviews and a discourse analysis are conducted on two topics : Muslim-Christian dialogue and the experiences of bi-religious families. National dialogue aims at the establishment of a civil religion based on religious plurality and its management through the system of political sectarianism. The bi-religious families experience the intercommunitarian frontiers; they develop different strategies facing the rejection by their environment and facing their double religious adherence. The study of three socio-political debates (concerning the system of political sectarianisme, civil marriage and religious relations and national unity : the logic of collective diffrence and the logic of mixture

Sieger, Pascal. "Imaginer une autre vie ensemble : ethnographie des communautés d'arts contemporains à Bangalore." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019EHES0066.
Full textMainly known for its high-tech industries, Bangalore is also one of the most vibrant cities of India in the field of contemporary arts. The town where many artists have settled since the 1990s is the cradle of many original experiences in the world of art, from an aesthetic as well as social and political point of view. Based on an ethnography of artists' communities in the performing arts, visual arts and literature, this research examines not only the forms of organization of their creative spaces, but also the values and ideals that are developed by artists whose goal is social change or political resistance. The first part of this thesis analyses the construction of the narrative making from Bangalore the city of the future, a cosmopolitan metropolis, symbol of modernity and creativity. The second part examines spaces dedicated to contemporary arts as well as the motivations of their founders. It shows the political imagination and humanistic values that are behind the desire to create communities. Cosmopolitanism thus appears as an ideal of the residences of artists observed, where the social and political experience is as important as the artistic project. The last part focuses on situations of coexistence of artists in residence. Using concepts from both social sciences and arts, it analyses the implementation of a different way of "living together”. The boundaries between art and anthropology fade and a bridge is build between the two disciplines inviting to a poetic anthropology or poetics of anthropology

Full textEnvironmental impacts induced by urban projects concern various topics (resources, health, biodiversity). Some are indirect impacts (for instance radioactive waste generated by electricity consumption). This calls for a holistic and multicriteria approach such as Life-Cycle-Analysis (LCA) in order to evaluate environmental performance of construction or retrofitting projects. Considering cradle to grave impacts this method is used at different project phases: program objectives, design aid, management strategies evaluation, retrofitting project, dismantling, and waste management. The thesis lies in the framework of life-cycle analysis applied to urban project design, from individual houses up to multifunctional neighborhoods. The underlying objective is to improve relevance and accuracy of the decision aid provided by LCA-based design tools.Three interacting topics have been investigated:- Consequential assessment: How can the results of current research on consequential LCA be implemented in Building LCA?- Dynamic: How to integrate dynamic interaction between buildings and the background system, mainly the electricity grid?- Prospective: How to take into account the long life span of buildings and urban districts? The dissertation firstly suggests a new framework for evaluating construction or retrofitting project, grounded in consequential LCA. The practical application of this consequential-project approach requires knowledge generation on dynamic and prospective LCA.A dynamic model of the electricity system has been developed. From this model, a reference operation year of the electricity system has been determined, mitigating climatic and economical hazards of real years. Based on this model, a dynamic average approach and a marginal approach are defined to assess life-cycle impacts of electricity consumption. These developments improve the accuracy of LCA independently of the chosen modeling approach, consequential or attributional. The prospective dimension is explored, through scenarios development. The suggested scenarios bring together national energy prospective research and global warming effects on buildings thermal behavior. The combined effects are evaluated using a novel and integrated approach. The thesis then addresses the scale issue when moving from building to district projects. Following the consequential-project approach principles, the focus is made on integrating daily transport and domestic waste models in LCA of urban projects. A method to combine local transport simulation models and building LCA is suggested. It establishes a first step towards integrated multidisciplinary assessment of urban projects. The developed approaches and methodologies are finally tested on a case study

Full textThe object of this thesis is an anlysis of the uses of parkings areas of two social housing neighbourhoods in parisian suburb. His purpose is to show how parking areas, usually considereted as non lieu or conflicted and disordered space, are, on the contrary, according to inhabitants interrogated, real areas of living. Parkings are in-between spaces and their tenure are doubtful. They are private places occupied by the car which is a real propriety people pay attention, and handy man and people who tend to lived them as extension of the flat. This characteristics tend to individualize the building and to reduce the public space of high rise flats estated often accused of beeing too huge. Parkings area are in the same time public because of their localisation outside and their activities : power-loom, tinkering are public activities related to work which is an institution. Parkings allow to study the evolution of public and private spaces and the appropriations of the high rise flats

Full textMy project is about studying how the different saxophone sizes interact in an ensemble. The purpose of the study is to investigate how I change the way I play the saxophonewhen switching from baritone saxophone to soprano saxophone in a saxophone quartet. My research questions are: How do I change the way I play the saxophone and my role inthe ensemble when I switch from playing baritone saxophone to playing sopranosaxophone? What are these differences due to? In the background chapter, concepts thatare important to the topic are presented such as rhythm, intonation, embouchure, support, formal roles and informal roles. The theoretical foundation of the study is ahermeneutic perspective. The methodology chapter presents the methods I used, namely video observation and logbook. Finally, the results of the analyzes made of theswitch from baritone saxophone to soprano saxophone are presented. The studypresents all the changes I have made regarding intonation, pace, rhythm, phrasing;embouchure, air, articulation; posture, movement, motor skills, leadership and roles.
