Guérin, Laura. "Manger ensemble : mourir ensemble : ethnographie du repas collectif en Ehpad." Paris, EHESS, 2016. http://www.theses.fr/2016EHES0121.
Full textBased on an ethnographic approach, this dissertation work constitutes an inquiry into the upholding of collective meals within French nursing homes dedicated to the care of dependent elderly populations (Ehpad). Recommended by public health policies and the professional literature as a token of care and sociability, the communal meal is none the less a daily trial within establishments, which commands practical adjustments in order to match, to the extent possible, the social expectations it crystallizes. Because each day it requires residents to be gathered, concentrates community living, we examine it as a particular socializing arrangement for the dependent elderly population. Hence the two lines of analysis we have favored. Firstly, we intend to grasp the Ehpad communal meal as the result of a specific labor: a set of ways of doing and saying that affecl residents, the focal aims of which laying with incorporating food and maintaining social arrangements. Secondly, by analyzing professional embarrassment that this work involves, as well as matching forms ol oppositions on residents' part, we overcome the mere medicalization of behaviors. Inquiry materials comprise participant observation in three establishments as an intern within the restaurant services, together with an analysis of professional best practices written by the French higher health authority and the French national agency for the evaluation of social and medico-social services. Through a review of the biomedical literature, apprehending the gap between norms and practices is placed in a widen reference space, where undernourishment is being built in a scholarly fashion. At last, a historical perspective of the Ehpad meal, through considering late XlXth century hospice meals as well as resulting medical theories on great-age nutrition, brings out the evolutions of elderly's treatment through consumptions. Across this dissertation, we have inquired into the government of bodies, in its disposition to produce hopes as foi maintaining the material and symbolic life of individuals known to be vulnerable and to soon face death

Full textIn Lebanon sectarian affiliation plays an important political and social role. This study analyses how interreligious relations contribute to the construction of national unity in this civil-war-torn country. Interviews and a discourse analysis are conducted on two topics : Muslim-Christian dialogue and the experiences of bi-religious families. National dialogue aims at the establishment of a civil religion based on religious plurality and its management through the system of political sectarianism. The bi-religious families experience the intercommunitarian frontiers; they develop different strategies facing the rejection by their environment and facing their double religious adherence. The study of three socio-political debates (concerning the system of political sectarianisme, civil marriage and religious relations and national unity : the logic of collective diffrence and the logic of mixture

Sieger, Pascal. "Imaginer une autre vie ensemble : ethnographie des communautés d'arts contemporains à Bangalore." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019EHES0066.
Full textMainly known for its high-tech industries, Bangalore is also one of the most vibrant cities of India in the field of contemporary arts. The town where many artists have settled since the 1990s is the cradle of many original experiences in the world of art, from an aesthetic as well as social and political point of view. Based on an ethnography of artists' communities in the performing arts, visual arts and literature, this research examines not only the forms of organization of their creative spaces, but also the values and ideals that are developed by artists whose goal is social change or political resistance. The first part of this thesis analyses the construction of the narrative making from Bangalore the city of the future, a cosmopolitan metropolis, symbol of modernity and creativity. The second part examines spaces dedicated to contemporary arts as well as the motivations of their founders. It shows the political imagination and humanistic values that are behind the desire to create communities. Cosmopolitanism thus appears as an ideal of the residences of artists observed, where the social and political experience is as important as the artistic project. The last part focuses on situations of coexistence of artists in residence. Using concepts from both social sciences and arts, it analyses the implementation of a different way of "living together”. The boundaries between art and anthropology fade and a bridge is build between the two disciplines inviting to a poetic anthropology or poetics of anthropology

Full textEnvironmental impacts induced by urban projects concern various topics (resources, health, biodiversity). Some are indirect impacts (for instance radioactive waste generated by electricity consumption). This calls for a holistic and multicriteria approach such as Life-Cycle-Analysis (LCA) in order to evaluate environmental performance of construction or retrofitting projects. Considering cradle to grave impacts this method is used at different project phases: program objectives, design aid, management strategies evaluation, retrofitting project, dismantling, and waste management. The thesis lies in the framework of life-cycle analysis applied to urban project design, from individual houses up to multifunctional neighborhoods. The underlying objective is to improve relevance and accuracy of the decision aid provided by LCA-based design tools.Three interacting topics have been investigated:- Consequential assessment: How can the results of current research on consequential LCA be implemented in Building LCA?- Dynamic: How to integrate dynamic interaction between buildings and the background system, mainly the electricity grid?- Prospective: How to take into account the long life span of buildings and urban districts? The dissertation firstly suggests a new framework for evaluating construction or retrofitting project, grounded in consequential LCA. The practical application of this consequential-project approach requires knowledge generation on dynamic and prospective LCA.A dynamic model of the electricity system has been developed. From this model, a reference operation year of the electricity system has been determined, mitigating climatic and economical hazards of real years. Based on this model, a dynamic average approach and a marginal approach are defined to assess life-cycle impacts of electricity consumption. These developments improve the accuracy of LCA independently of the chosen modeling approach, consequential or attributional. The prospective dimension is explored, through scenarios development. The suggested scenarios bring together national energy prospective research and global warming effects on buildings thermal behavior. The combined effects are evaluated using a novel and integrated approach. The thesis then addresses the scale issue when moving from building to district projects. Following the consequential-project approach principles, the focus is made on integrating daily transport and domestic waste models in LCA of urban projects. A method to combine local transport simulation models and building LCA is suggested. It establishes a first step towards integrated multidisciplinary assessment of urban projects. The developed approaches and methodologies are finally tested on a case study

Full textThe object of this thesis is an anlysis of the uses of parkings areas of two social housing neighbourhoods in parisian suburb. His purpose is to show how parking areas, usually considereted as non lieu or conflicted and disordered space, are, on the contrary, according to inhabitants interrogated, real areas of living. Parkings are in-between spaces and their tenure are doubtful. They are private places occupied by the car which is a real propriety people pay attention, and handy man and people who tend to lived them as extension of the flat. This characteristics tend to individualize the building and to reduce the public space of high rise flats estated often accused of beeing too huge. Parkings area are in the same time public because of their localisation outside and their activities : power-loom, tinkering are public activities related to work which is an institution. Parkings allow to study the evolution of public and private spaces and the appropriations of the high rise flats

Full textMy project is about studying how the different saxophone sizes interact in an ensemble. The purpose of the study is to investigate how I change the way I play the saxophonewhen switching from baritone saxophone to soprano saxophone in a saxophone quartet. My research questions are: How do I change the way I play the saxophone and my role inthe ensemble when I switch from playing baritone saxophone to playing sopranosaxophone? What are these differences due to? In the background chapter, concepts thatare important to the topic are presented such as rhythm, intonation, embouchure, support, formal roles and informal roles. The theoretical foundation of the study is ahermeneutic perspective. The methodology chapter presents the methods I used, namely video observation and logbook. Finally, the results of the analyzes made of theswitch from baritone saxophone to soprano saxophone are presented. The studypresents all the changes I have made regarding intonation, pace, rhythm, phrasing;embouchure, air, articulation; posture, movement, motor skills, leadership and roles.

Full textThe purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the national policy documents regarding gender perception and how teachers are dealing with this in ensemble education in jazz and popular music in the Swedish upper secondary school. I have chosen to analyze the attitudes and actions of ensemble teachers from a gender perspective. This study is based on the perception of gender as a social construction,, where gender patterns are generated in the interaction between people, through constant repetition of action and behavior. In an attempt to answer these questions, I conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with four current teachers at four upper secondary schools. After analyzing the interview material, the result shows that all the participants believe that the perception of gender and human equality is fundamental in the field of education. The procedures for how educators handle equality in ensemble teaching differ slightly. They highlight various aspects of the subject linked to policy documents governing the various ways. The teachers agree that perception of gender affects the educational work, both through interaction with the students, as well as on a collegiate level.

Full textThe study of sociability in Saige, a neighbourhood defined as a "priority urban zone" and "famous for its ethnic diversity" enlightens the alterity production processes linked to territorially-based local policies, Ethnic identification depends on groups relations: this work insists on the complexity of the social relations ethnicisation process. This research combines empirical qualitative and quantitative data. The restitution of the data is organised around everyday life and special events. The ways "inhabitants" define the situations they participate to depends on negociation, conflicts, and power relations. The general problem in Saige is enounced as a question of citizenship and the local actors consider the territory should be "renewed", "revalorised" and that social ties should be "refounded". In that perspective, they adress paradoxal injunctions to inhabitants. We also analysed depreciative denominations such as "fathers", "mums", "young people" and "storey-blocks people". In practice, they are used as susbtitutes for ethnic categories such as "foreigners", "immigrants", "foreign background" and "people of origin"

The involved double-sided contact is represented by a classical torsion stiffness and a viscous torsion damping. The piecewise linear motion equation obtained is solved by a semi analytical method. A continuation technique, based on a semi analytical shooting method, is used to describe periodic orbits and their bifurcations. The chaotic behaviour is revealed by the computed Lyaopunov exponents and Poincaré applications. Finally, an experiment idealizing the vacuum pump system has been performed. Experimental and computed results will be confronted to validate the model and the analysis procedure

Full textTheoretical and empirical analysis show that different meanings of participation exit (participation solidarity, participation-dispute and participationmanagement) and that several groups of inhabitants who have their own logical and strategy of action coexist. For some institutional actors, participation means the possibility of having the inhabitants to adhere to their plans - and is conceived as an instrument of management. For others, it means on the contrary a possibility to mobilize the inhabitants of one neighbourhood, to create a bound of solidarity and/or to contest the decisions taken by institutional actors. Three types of groups can be distinguished in one quarter that will develop logics and various strategies of action according to local context and the position of actors one to another and the relation to the overall social system. The groups promote various participations (militants, voluntaries, users, beneficiaries, etc. ) and can come into conflict, in competition or can be supplementary depending on the political context and each actor's position. In this context, partipation-management suggested by the institutional actors, in particular in one social quarter development, must take the actors configuration, in account in one social quarter where three types of groups exist. In this sens, the methods of participation suggested by elected representatives are at the same time the result of action strategies configuration developed by different actors and a new process of inhabitants participation

Full textMy research aims to examine from the archaeological record organization of power elites indigenous ee of what we might call "signs of royalty" present in Southern Italy in the territories which the Campania, the Sannio, the Lucania (Basilicata ) and essapia (Apulia). Well aware of the great historical problem (for example, the almost total lack of indigenous written sources on the subject) and archaeological (which are actually signs to identify a royalty of meaning Greek and / or how to distinguish them from those rather linked to indigenous world) the This argument has gone thus forming from an idea and the will of Pierre Carlier to analyze and document the archaeological evidence of these manifestations of power that could be recognized as signs of royalty setting them in a specific historical period rich sources of Greek origin but poor in terms of indigenous. His work "The royauté en Grèce avant Alexandre", while analyzing a different social context in a wider span, was the starting point for this research that his intention was to go to complete the geographic landscape also including the south Italy and Magna Grecia. In the remainder of the work, and with the acquisition of the data collected from the various geographical areas considered, we have realized the almost total absence to date of inscriptions, literary sources and whatnot matrix indigenous can refer explicitly to a indigenous royalty, the only statements of fact these elements from a historical point of view, as we shall see, are only of Greek origin

Full textThis work presents a very fast algorithm to segmentation of moving parts in a video, based on detection of surfaces of the scene with closed contours. The input video is preprocessed with an edge detection algorithm based on level lines to produce the objects. The detected objects are clustered using a combination of mean shift clustering and ensemble clustering. In order decrease even more the computation time required, two methods can be used combined: object filtering by size and selecting only a few frames of the video. Since the detected objects are coherent in time, frame skipping does not affect the final result. Depending on the application the detected clusters can be refined using post processing steps.

Full textThe turbots’ (Scophthalmus maximus) selection of habitat in the Baltic Sea has been modeled on the basis of fish survey data and environmental variables. At a total of 435 stations in the Baltic Sea, data was collected in the form of fish survey data, CTD (Conductivity, Temperature and Depth) measurements and videos. By analyzing the videos from the seabed of the Baltic Sea, four different explanatory variables have been classified: coverage of soft bottom, structure-forming plants, other algae and coverage of mussels. Another six explanatory variables have been collected from measurements and existing rasters: salinity, temperature, depth, water transparency, wave exposure and the bottom slope. These ten explanatory variables have been used in ten different species distribution modeling methods with the presence/absence of turbot as a response variable. Nine out of ten models showed good results (AUC > 0.7) where the CTA (Classification Tree Analysis) and GBM (Global Boosting Model) performed the best (AUC > 0.9). By combining the models with good performance in six different ensemble models each individual models’ weaknesses were decreased. The ensemble models clearly showed strength as they gave a very good performance (AUC > 0.94). The worst ensemble model was significantly better than the best individual model. The results of the models show that the largest probability of occurrence of turbot in the Baltic Sea is in shallow (< 20 m) and warm (> 10 ° C) water with high wave exposure (> 30,000 m²/s). These three variables were those with the highest significance for the models. Coverage of soft bottom and the two vegetation variables, from the video analyzes, had the lowest impact on the turbots’ choice of habitat. A higher quality of the videos would have made it possible to classify these variables in more specific groups which might have given a different result. Generally, the models showed that this type of modeling of habitat is possible to perform with fish survey and environmental monitoring data and generates useful results.

Nevertheless, to exist socially, to be recognized and thus integrated into the consumer society where they were born and grew up, they have the major conviction that only the money in great quantity will make the deal. Full textThis PHD analyses the media coverage of poor districts through the study of lower-class urban neighbourhoods and of the work of journalists'. The first part shows the combined effects of the transformations of poor areas (through monographs realized in two social-housing areas in the suburb of Paris) and of the journalistic field on the production of a dominant representation of « trouble-spot ». The second part looks at how the journalists work in these areas and the way their sources (policemen, sociologists, municipalities, associative actors, social workers, and so forth) attempt to become part of the production process of news items. The third part deals with the different procedures implemented in two council block areas, in the aftermath of journalistic scandals in which they are involved. In order to deal with journalists, the reactions range from creation of communication cells by the local municipalities, attempt at controlling the speech of the young generation through the elder brothers, local associations' concerted endeavours at offering a unified vision to the media, and even cases of physical aggressions against journalists in order to forbid their access to the area. It is because the media provide powerful instruments in the making of reputations that such controlling reactions occur ; such a phenomenon illustrates the-paradox according to which the more media coverage a domain receives, the less journalists themselves produce the information

Full textThis PhD-thesis demonstrates the potential of ensemble weather forecasts in the decision support tools developed to assist farmers in anticipating the application of phytosanitary treatments. We consider the models EVA that simulates the dynamics of grape berry moth and Septo-LIS that forecasts the development of wheat septoria. We illustrate the potential of using ensemble weather forecasts in agronomic models compared to frequency data. We then propose strategies to design seamless ensemble weather forecasts that combine information from three ensembles with different spatio-temporal scales. Finally these seamless forecasts are evaluated from a meteorological and agronomic point of view. The design of seamless ensemble predictions is considered as a concatenation problem. Ensemble predictions are first calibrated using a parametric approach, then the concatenation of forecasts is handled with a distance measure and an assignment algorithm. We show that the so-called Hungarian method is able to provide ensembles of independent and temporally consistent forecasts. It is shown that the EVA model is significantly improved by the calibration of temperature forecasts, while the benefit of seamless forecasts is not significant

Full textThe historiography and sociology renewals as well as the outstanding turmoil within the juridical circle that have impressed vividly upon the Israeli society during the eighties constitute an "intellectual mirror" reflecting the erosion of the classical socio-political conceptions of the nation-state. One can notably observe a feeling of exasperation with the national cause, a desire to see the multiculturalist character of its society recognized and protected, and a longing for a supposedly more democratic regime. The echo met by this literature among an elite as well as the disapproval it also generated mean that what it distils certainly belongs to a contemporary democratic trend going beyond the State's borders. Hence the possibility of an analysis stemming from the reflection led in Western societies in the pursuit of a new « vivre-ensemble »

Full textOur work has two aims. First, the joint analysis of the indicators in order to qualify the relationship between their developments based on the mechanical loads. Then, the study of the behavioral patterns of one collective funeral deposit in Vaucluse: the hypogeum of Boileau. Then, we expand the study at the departmental scale while comparing four funeral deposits: the Capitaine and Roaix hypogeums and the dolmen of the Ubac. The goal is to apprehend the homogeneity or the specificity of behaviors between subjects and samples through the various indicators thanks to the long bones. No relationship due to mechanical loads aroused between the indicators. Their developments are not influenced by the presence of another one and do not infer it. Indicators bring complementary information on a global skeleton or a smaller scale. The activities of the Boileau hypogeum subjects are bilateral and specialized activities is difficult to prove. Males have a physical investment equal to females for the upper limb with a few behavioral differences. Men are more mobile and their recurring postural mode for the lower limb is different. The squatting posture is common for both sexes. We propose a sexual division of labor.Inter-samples stressed a behavioral uniformity with a few nuances depending of the samples along the postural mode of the lower limb and the solicited muscles of the upper limb. The terrain has no real impact on the robusticity of the lower limb for all the samples. The artifacts in the burials cannot be used to reconstruct the behavioral patterns. Our work shed light on occupational markers and the data behavioral patterns of late Neolithic populations
