AbstractEnsete ventricosum (enset) has been cultivated in Ethiopia since ancient times. It is a multipurpose, drought tolerant and food security crop. When burying enset corms for vegetative propagation, manure is usually placed on the soil surface. However, there is no research-based evidence to justify this practice. We hypothesised that enset sucker production would be enhanced by placing manure in the corm burial hole. We tested this hypothesis, investigated manure application rates per buried corm and tested the effect of supplying a small amount of inorganic fertilizer. Three enset culti

SUMMARYEnset [Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheesman (Musaceae)] is a multi-purpose and drought-tolerant crop, traditionally grown in Ethiopia. Food from enset has nutritive values similar to potato; it could improve food and livelihood security for many in larger geographical areas. Agronomical advice is needed which requires increased knowledge of management techniques. The purposes of this study were to (i) compare traditional corm pre-treatments when planting for sucker production, (ii) compare all six officially released cultivars regarding sprouting and (iii) investigate the effect of water

Enset (Ensete ventricosum (Welw.) Cheesman) is a traditional staple crop that is economically significant for over 20 million people in the central, southern and southwestern regions of Ethiopia. This study provided updated information on where wild and cultivated enset grow and how well their seeds can germinate. Purposively, six study sites were selected based on factors that affect the socioeconomic significance, diversity, and distribution of enset. Data gathered included socioeconomic values, types of landraces, seeds, and conservation status for each site. Different methods were used for

Enset (Ensete ventricosum) is an important food crop that is cultivated in Ethiopia. In vitro propagation: zygotic embryo culture, shoot tip culture, callus culture and somatic embryogenesis were investigated for this crop. Forty four percent germination of excised embryos of stored seeds of enset genotype Oniya was obtained when the embryos were placed horizontally on the medium that was supplemented with 0.5 mg l ̄¹BA and 0.2 mg lˉ¹ lAA, after germination of intact seeds could not be achieved. Abstract Histories generally portray southern Ethiopians as pagans who lacked kings because they rely on the historical accounts of their northern Abyssinian conquerors, who adopted Christianity in the first century AD. Justified by a call to spread Christianity and suffering the threat of famine and disease to his empire, Abyssinian emperor Menelik II (1889–1913) conquered and colonized southern Omotic-speaking polities, who cultivated a drought-resistant crop, enset (Ensete ventricosum). According to most Ethiopian histories, Boreda were one of the southern Omotic societies, who quickly succ
