Abstract:
In recent years, the film industry has witnessed a significant transformation with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a formidable creative force. This abstract provides an overview of an essay exploring AI’s multifaceted implications in the film sector. The essay delves into the palpable concerns surrounding AI’s influence on the industry, particularly in scriptwriting. AI’s remarkable script generation capabilities have led companies to explore cost-saving measures, which raises questions about the potential displacement of human creatives. The essay examines how these changes have sparked tensions, exemplified by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike. However, amidst these concerns, the coexistence potential of AI and human creativity is highlighted. The role of AI-regulating laws in safeguarding employment and ensuring ethical AI implementation will be discussed. Moreover, the essay underscores the enduring value of human creativity, as very few AI systems have passed the Turing test. Sorenson, Hannah. "Spare the Rod, Spoil the Society? The Moral Complexity of Caning in Singapore." Journal of Contemporary Sociological Issues 1, no. 1 (February 3, 2021): 35. http://dx.doi.org/10.19184/csi.v1i1.21506.

Full text
Abstract:
You have the opportunity to decide whether or not a person gets caned, the only caveat is that they have committed a crime against you. What will you do? This essay explores the moral complexity of caning in Singapore through an exploration of corporal punishment, criminal justice, moral philosophy, and the Asian values debate; a dilemma that ultimately places concerns of society and the individual at odds. In doing so, the essay argues that the morality of caning changes on the basis of the ethical framework and modification of situation variables. Even so, the moral complexity of caning is not superficially evident. In order to thoroughly engage with all elements of this complexity, this essay begins by attempting to decipher the place of punishment within international human rights frameworks. From there, the essay explores the morality of punishment and its employ in colonial endeavors. This leads to a discussion of modernization, humanitarian ideologies, and control. By creating a framework for analyzing criminal justice in Singapore—including an outline of the intersections of criminal justice, development, and prosperity —this essay seeks to explore the balance between corporal punishment as a tool of prosperity and corporal punishment as a source of pain and degradation. When placed in consequentialist and virtue-based ethical frameworks caning in Singapore looks very different, forcing the moral actor to weigh societal concerns with concerns for individual pain, suffering, and liberties. Keywords: Caning, Morality, Society, Punishment.

Abstract:
LANGUAGE NOTE | Document text in Chinese; abstract also in English. To establish appropriate medical professionalism in contemporary China, institutional construction, reform and development are certainly necessary. However, they must be conducted by drawing on relevant cultural ideas and values to gain support. In particular, traditional Chinese medical culture and ethics contain a great amount of intellectual and moral resources that are useful for the construction and development of contemporary Chinese medical professionalism. This essay attempts to explore such resources and make relevant recommendations.Traditional Chinese medical culture is informed by Confucian ethical concerns and commitments. It requires that the physician must have a benevolent heart to treat the patient and a diligent mind to pursue health care knowledge. At the same time, the physician must hold reverence for life and appreciate the vital importance of human life. In addition, Confucian culture expects the physician to be fair in treating different kinds of patients and their families, and to be generous in attempting to help people. In the process of providing medical treatment, physicians’ personal integrity and an attitude for pursuing harmonious outcomes (among patient, family and physician) are emphasized. Finally, the Confucian notions of righteousness and fraternity refer to the view that physicians should engage in serious cultivation of virtue so that they may form a firm moral aspiration to help others and be honored to conduct noble actions in helping others. Accordingly, when we attempt to set up effective health care institutions and establish proper contemporary medical professionalism, these traditional values and commitments should be studied and drawn upon.Based on these considerations, the final part of the essay puts forward four suggestions for rebuilding a proper Chinese physician profession. First, the government should provide a reasonable income and effective security for physicians, not only to supervise but also to protect their legitimate interests in providing health care services to the public. Second, pubic hospital administrators should pay attention to physicians’ personal interests and their work conditions, to provide a feasible working environment for them to treat patients effectively. Third, physicians should understand that although the external environment can never be perfect, they should discipline themselves by ensuring good professional, interpersonal and psychological standards in providing health care services to the people. Finally, physicians must recognize that as professionals, they are expected to hold proper virtues and a benevolent heart to overcome their personal difficulties, whatever they are, to treat patients and their families in virtuous and benevolent ways.DOWNLOAD HISTORY | This article has been downloaded 361 times in Digital Commons before migrating into this platform.

Milevska, Suzana. "The Return to Kalokagathia: Curating as Leverage in the Ongoing Dialogues between Aesthetics and Ethics." Philosophies 5, no. 4 (October 12, 2020): 29. http://dx.doi.org/10.3390/philosophies5040029.

Full text
Abstract:
This essay argues that curating brought back a kind of leverage that redressed the otherwise imbalanced relationship between aesthetics and ethics. Curating lends out to art its innocent and aspirational belief in such a balance because the ethical concerns in art theory and art criticism have long been toned down while form was prioritized over content. Ever since the curatorial profession created its own niche in the art world—started, for example, in the West, in the late 1960s with curators such as Siegelaub, Szeemann, or Lippard—curating began to mediate this relationship, thus helping to activate the catalyst potential of art without having to compromise its formal aspects. More specifically, this essay explores the ways in which theories and practices of curating brought back to mind the ancient Greek notion of kalokagathia, the intertwinement of aesthetics and ethics and, with it, other ethical responsibilities, principles, and values that art forgot to address while giving privilege to its formal aspects.

AbstractThe essay explores the relationship between Christian faith, ethical thought and political action. It examines two views of the matter. First, the autonomy thesis, advanced by writers such as Edward Norman in his Reith Lectures and elsewhere, which claims that Christianity in general is independent of political concerns, and that Church leaders in particular have no business engaging in political debate, or using their teaching authority to commend or condemn the actions of governments. Second, the commitment thesis, here derived from writings of Kenneth Leech, which maintains that fidelity to the biblical revelation involves an explicit commitment to Christian humanism, and thereby to practical opposition to capitalism and support for radical socialism.

Abstract Since the Nuremberg Code and the first Declaration of Helsinki, globally there has been increasing adoption and adherence to procedures for ensuring that human subjects in research are as well informed as possible of the study’s reasons and risks and voluntarily consent to serving as subject. To do otherwise is essentially viewed as violation of the human research subject’s legal and moral rights. However, with the recent philosophical concerns about responsible robotics, the limits and ambiguities of research-subjects ethical codes become apparent on the matter of constructing automata that maximally resemble human beings (as defined hereunder). In this case, the automata themselves, as products of research and development, are in the very process of their construction subjects of research and development. However, such research faces a paradox: The subjects cannot give their informed consent to this research for their own development, although their consent would be needed for the research. According to ethical codes, this research would be unethical. The article then explores whether the background concepts giving rise to this paradox could be reframed in order to allow such research to proceed ethically.

Abstract:
This paper explores the significance of the relationships and disjunctures between the global moral discourses of Fairtrade that are articulated through ethics of fairness in supply chains and the everyday moral experiences, discourses and practices of producers that shape moral economies in specific localities. Due to increased governance through universal codes, standards and certification, Fairtrade risks becoming an abstract ethical and regulatory tool, disconnected from the moral economies of those poor farmers it is intended to benefit. In response, the paper makes a case for a deeper understanding of the moral economies of farmers involved in Fairtrade networks and the ways in which these emerge out of moral experiences that are deeply embedded in local social and cultural relations. Through a case study of Eksteenskuil Agricultural Cooperative in South Africa’s Northern Cape, it seeks to demonstrate the importance of understanding the moral experiences of producers to better consider what is at stake for them, focusing on notions of cooperation, fairness and the ‘good farmer’, perceptions of community, and concerns with survival and self-sufficiency. The paper concludes that working in culturally-sensitive ways with producer communities and understanding how their local moral worlds are structured is vital in bridging the gap between abstract ethical discourses and the place-based moral experiences of producers, and to ensuring the effectiveness of Fairtrade initiatives.

Abstract:
Abstract: This essay argues that Ralph Waldo Emerson's thinking and style are governed by a hitherto unrecognized "logic of decadence" that manifests as a fascination with the philosophical and ethical functions of negativity, decay, and destruction. It discerns in Emersonianism a peculiarly American idiolect of decadence—an "alter-decadence"—that emerges from similar sources as that of the fin de siecle Decadent movement but evolves in a divergent direction, notably by valorizing the dialectical tension between the totality of nature and its parts instead of celebrating the breakdown of holistic unities. The first section argues that although critics have long invoked tropes of decadence to describe features of Emerson's work, they have generally misunderstood their functions. The second section excavates ideas about decadence that Emerson received in his reading of historians like Montesquieu and Edward Gibbon, arguing that even in his early thinking Emerson was adapting a historical logic of decadence in order to reconcile his alternately monistic and pluralistic views of the universe. The final section explores how the logic of decadence provides an infrastructure for Emerson to develop these metaphysical concerns into an ethic of relationality and contingency that eschews belief in absolute conceptions of the good.

Abstract:
Post 9/11 the ‘invisibility’ of political prisoners as part of the ‘war on terror’ has had a direct correlation with the concealment of abusive treatment of detainees in the detention camps at Guantánamo Bay and Abu Ghraib. Details of these abuse scandals have indicated that there has been a notable shift away from the optical towards the sonic as a form of punishment and torture, with accounts of detainees being subjected to rock music played for prolonged periods at excruciating volumes (Smith, 2008). Addressing a number of key concerns – sound and phe- nomenology, sound and the ethics of spectatorship, sound and the experience/intensification of confinement, sound as a (potential) mode of resistance/control – this paper will investigate the use of sound in cinematic depictions of imprisonment including A Man Escaped (Bresson, 1956), Hunger (McQueen, 2008) and Zero Dark Thirty (Bigelow, 2012). The aim is to explore how an auditory perspective might complicate previously held ocularcentric conceptions of power in penal institutions (Foucault, 1977) and to examine how this experience of sound is represented on screen. The essay also considers how sound design can bridge the distance between self and other, and align the spectator emotionally, ethically and politically with a film’s characters. The essay thus proposes that an ethical spectatorship may require cinematic auditors to listen more critically, and it claims that a better understanding of the fundamental role that sound and listening play in the articulation and recognition – or indeed, disavowal – of the subjectivity of prisoners within these narratives may lead to an increased awareness of the politics of aesthetics of individual films. The essay concludes by suggesting that the field of sound studies creates further opportunities for research that explores these important questions about representation, spectatorship and ethics from a range of disciplinary perspectives.

Abstract:
Walter Pater's theoretical "come-back" over the past forty years or so has been dominated by the competing claims of the new historicism and deconstruction, both of which discover prescient forerunners of their own, seemingly mutually exclusive, theoretical concerns in Pater's aesthetic criticism and in his historical novel Marius the Epicurean(1885). Yet despite their obvious differences, both critical approaches share one thing in common: the same post-humanist denigration of the trope of metaphor in favor of the seemingly more ethically responsive (because inclusive) trope of metonymy. In this essay I observe how the new historicism's and deconstruction's privilegings of metonymy as the prime trope of difference poses an immediate problem for ethical thought that, largely under the influence of Alain Badiou, has become increasingly cognizant of the need for a workable conception of sameness (or universality), traditionally supplied by metaphor. Accordingly, this close reading of the metaphorical dialectic of one of Pater's surprisingly underread Imaginary Portraits, "Sebastian van Storck" (1887), explores the basic charge against metaphor-namely, that it is an essentially"theological" trope insofar as it invariably pre-posits the "identity" that it modestly claims to have merely discovered. Employing the central figure of Sebastian's idealism-equation-I venture that, once rethought as a relation not of identity but of equivalence, metaphor is capable of shouldering the rhetorical burden of similarity without relinquishing its ethical claim as a primary producer of new differences in the world and is, hence, deserving of a central place in a post-deconstructive ethics.

Abstract:
Connected Matters: Collaboration and Care in Nana Francisca Schottländer’s Bodyscaping By Solveig Gade This article is preoccupied with the dramaturgies and collaborations between human and more-than-human agents in contemporary eco-performance. Putting Anna Tsing’s concept of contamination as collaboration as well as Maria Puig de la Bellacasa’s notion of care time into dialogue with theatre and performance studies, the article investigates Danish choreographer Nana Fransisca Schottländer’s performance Bodyscaping, arguing that contemporary eco-performance does not only represent, but also practice care. Jessie Kleemann’s Art of Survival By David W. Norman In her work as an educator, actor, poet and visual artist, Jessie Kleemann has persistently expanded the limits of arts discourse in Kalaallit Nunaat, not least through her unique approach to body art informed by historical Kalaallit theatrical forms and antimimetic dramaturgy. Emphasizing how Kleemann’s embodied practice prompts reflection on the potential for action amid environmental collapse, this essay situates her work alongside schools of thought that have theorized the body during moments of crisis. I focus on Kleemann’s early experimentation with analog video and recent ecocritical poetry, aligning her work with traditions ranging from ancestral Inuit performance genres to post-1945 action art and contemporary practices advocating on behalf of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. Kleemann’s methods, refracted through these traditions, place embodied action at the center of efforts to form more ethical relations. The Art of Sustainability By Sarah Woods As the systems thinker Fritjof Capra points out, through the course of Western history we have tended to give more attention to elements or things than to interconnections or relationships, thinking more mechanistically than holistically, asking “What is it made of?” rather than “What is the pattern?” 26. Sometimes, however, the study of patterns and relationships comes to the fore. Now, in our networked, digital world, as we wrestle with some of the 66 continuous problems that Donella Meadows and her team addressed in the classic Limits to Growth27, like climate change, global inequality and migration, is one of those times. This article shows the diverse and multi-fold advantages of using systems thinking as a methodology for working creatively with complexity. It explores the basic biological patterns that define life; the nature, patterns and effects of different forms of feedback; and how systems thinking can assist us in problem-solving, managing complexity and in understanding how creativity works. Living sustainably means living within the finite limits of our system. Understanding more about the systems we live with, whether through taking action on climate change or creating a well-functioning piece of art, helps us to live well and to create well. The Slow Integration of Sustainability into Contemporary Theatre and Performance Practices in Cameroon By Kenneth T. Nsah, Lisette N. Malung and Noella M. Ngunyam The Cameroonian theatre landscape, both Anglophone and Francophone, is not left untouched by current concerns and discourses about climate change, ecological degradation, and particularly environmental/natural sustainability. In this article, we will examine the emerging inclusion of sustainability in theatre and performances in Cameroon. Specifically, we will discuss the ways in which choices of costumes, makeup, stage props, and occasionally thematics reflect and seek to promote the sustainable management of Nature. Methodologically, we will employ data gathered from five current theatre troupes in Cameroon, interviews conducted with some theatre directors and practitioners, and the personal experiences of (some) co-authors who are also theatre practitioners. We will begin by discussing some unsustainable practices that characterised much of previous Cameroonian theatrical performances and then proceed to present the evolution of the situation, especially as demonstrated in the choices and deployment of costumes, makeup, stage props, and thematics in a selection of theatre performances and theatre scripts. In this way, we hope to highlight the contribution of Cameroonian theatre towards ensuring a just and sustainable planet Earth for all. Costume and Sustainability: From Past Practice to Future Strategies for an Ecological Costume Praxis By Sofia Pantouvaki, Ingvill Fossheim and Susanna Suurla What can we learn from past traditions and what sustainability practices are currently employed in the field of costume? Moving towards a more ecological costume creation, there is an increasing need to address the responsibility of the costume practitioners through the lifecycle of costume from design to production. This article provides an overview of current sustainable costume practices and suggests that it is timely to rethink costume praxis from an ecologically responsible perspective. The article addresses the necessity of embedding ecological equity into all aspects of costume creation and proposes that a resilient ecosystem of costume practice can be envisioned within professional institutions, as well as the individual costume designer. Seeking Performance Sustainability within Disability By Molly Joyce The disability community has traditionally been left out of sustainability conversations. Disability is often seen as a “blind spot” in such frameworks (Miethlich 2019) and is not considered part of sustainability metrics (Beyond Green,2019). Therefore, it is pertinent to investigate what sustainability can manifest within the institutional and aesthetic circumstances of disability arts, specifically through the lens of disabled artists across performative disciplines. Leave No Bodymind Behind: Sins Invalid’s Vision of Crip Sustainability By Nina Muehlemann This article discusses how the work of US-collective Sins Invalid, particularly the 2021 documentary Loving with Three Hearts and 2020 performance piece We Love Like Barnacles, addresses the exclusion of disabled people, especially multiply marginalised disabled people, in discourses and practices that address ecological disaster. The article argues that the company positions ableism as a crucial part of said exclusion and with their work proposes a version of sustainability that is rooted in collective access and care.

Abstract:
Dislocation, expatriation, and the attendant loss of homeland are concerns at the heart of Jewish literature. The dialectical relationship between identity and the sense of homeland informing the Jewish diasporic consciousness, in particular, has often culminated in nostalgic depictions of Israel in post-war American Jewish literature. In focusing on such a literary representation, this essay unravels the multidimensionality of diasporic Jewish identity. Critically analyzing Nicole Krauss’s Forest Dark (2017), it evaluates the trauma of exile and the psychic dilemma of third-generation American Jewish writers. The novelist brings about a confluence of nostos and nostalgia in Forest Dark. In evoking the visceral sense of loss, dislocation, and a painful yearning for the lost homeland, the author succeeds in tracing the lives of two protagonists, Jules Epstein, a retired New York lawyer, and Nicole, a Jewish American novelist struggling with a deep marital crisis. The text foregrounds the theme of self-discovery exemplified in the homecoming of its two central characters. Following his parents’ death and haunted by the anguish and horror of the Shoah, Jules unmoors himself from his current life and flies to Tel Aviv on a whim. Nicole, who suffers from creative blockage on account of her failing marriage, undertakes the trip to Tel Aviv hoping to recover from her soul-sickness, as it were. If Jules and Nicole do not cross paths, it still remains that their Jewish identities stem from the originary tragedy of the Holocaust. Although removed from the horrific sights and scenes of the tragic event, intergenerational trauma resonates with certain aspects of the diasporic Jewish existence. Using theoretical interventions of memory studies and the Freudian concept of Unheimlich or the uncanny, this essay explores the ethical implications that undergird Nicole Krauss’s diasporic depiction of Israel.
