Verma, Suman. Social Protection, Adolescent Well-Being, and Development in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190847128.003.0016.

Full text
Abstract:
Effective social protection policies are crucial to realizing adolescents’ rights, ensuring their well-being, breaking the cycle of poverty and vulnerability, and helping them realize their full developmental potential. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have extended social security coverage to ensure basic protections—while continuing to develop social protection systems. Social protection for LMIC adolescents in the context of gross violations of their basic rights is examined. Prevalence, consequences of protection rights violations, and the role and impact of social protection programs in ensuring enhanced opportunities for development and well-being among young people are discussed. Results demonstrate direct impacts (e.g., increased income, consumption, goods and services access; greater social inclusion; reduced household stress). LMICs need integrated social protection policy and program expansion if the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to be realized. With adolescent-centered policies and investments, governments can help adolescents realize their rights to a fulfilling and productive life.

Abstract:
Addressing environmental concerns in a post-conflict setting is a difficult undertaking; yet addressing these concerns, particularly their cyclical nature, is vital to ensuring that post-conflict countries develop sustainably. Fundamental human rights may also be implicated where there is systematic environmental degradation and those rights infringements in turn can threaten efforts at peace and stability. Given the inadequacy of existing post-conflict country domestic and international hard law governing environmental rights and protections, voluntary and soft law norms and the corporate social responsibility movement are critical to ensuring that multinational investment in post-conflict countries is in line with sustainable development principles and the long-term economic and environmental prosperity of those countries, and therefore should be included in a holistic jus post bellum framework. These norms provide a critical opportunity to harness the power of private corporations and investments to ensure sustainable development, resulting in a more durable transition to peace in post-conflict states.

Gender, Health, and Development in the Americas: Basic Indicators 2019. Organización Panamericana de la Salud, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.37774/9789275122624.

Full text
Abstract:
This is the eighth edition of the statistical brochure on Gender, Health, and Development in the Americas: Basic Indicators 2019. The usefulness of this brochure is widely recognized by various audiences throughout the Region of the Americas. The first step towards achieving gender equality is understanding the differences in the living and working conditions among men and women, as well as the risk factors and vulnerabilities that influence health outcomes. Additionally, in order to meet the targets set by the Sustainable Development Goals, countries should collect data to show the inequalities between diverse groups of men and women, identifying the most disadvantaged population groups and ensuring that no one is left behind. While countries of the Americas have taken significant strides in disaggregating health data by sex and age, additional efforts are still needed to include ethnic variables into health registries. This compendium of indicators illustrates the differences in health between men and women and, in the social, economic, and environmental determinants. It highlights once again the importance of continuing to collect disaggregated data to conduct gender-based analysis in order to determine, address, reduce, and eliminate the causes of gender-related inequalities.

Abstract:
Of 1.2 billion adolescents in the world today, 90% live in low- and middle-income countries. These adolescents not only face many challenges but also represent a resource to be cultivated through educational opportunities and vocational training to move them toward economic independence, through initiatives to improve reproductive health, and through positive interpersonal relationships to help them avoid risky behaviors and make positive decisions about their futures. This volume tackles the challenges and promise of adolescence by presenting cutting-edge research on adolescent social, emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and physical development; promising programs from different countries to promote adolescents’ positive development; and policies that can advance adolescents’ rights within the framework of international initiatives, such as the Convention on the Rights of the Child and Sustainable Development Goals, which are guiding the international development agenda through 2030. This volume seeks to provide actionable strategies for policymakers and practitioners working with adolescents. Disconnects between national-level policies and local services, as well as lack of continuity with early childhood responses, present a significant challenge to ensuring a coherent approach for adolescents. Increasingly, adolescent participation and demands for rights-based approaches are seen and often unfortunately conflated with violence. This volume adopts a positive framing of adolescence, representing young people as opportunities rather than threats, and a valued investment both at individual and societal levels, contributing to a positive shift in discourses around young people.

Abstract:
The economic and social challenges of the twenty-first century in the quest for sustainable development are multiple. On the positive side, good progress was achieved in setting clear targets and the results that eventually came with them. Human longevity, poverty reduction, overseas development assistance, and the fight against corruption all show progress. In other areas, the future is less certain. Some tools, including free trade, have reached unprecedented heights in creating economic growth. Ensuring that this is always a tool for good, by avoiding damaging subsidies, for example is necessary. An equally big challenge for free trade is ensuring that distributions of benefits are more equitable. The challenge will also be in accepting that although voluntary measures, ranging from those for ethical consumers through to those for responsible corporations, are commendable and can produce good results in some instances, there are limits to how far voluntary approaches may go.
