Abstract:
In response to Iolaus' cry for help, the chorus in Held, enter at a run (βοηδροµοντεс cf. 121), and the Parodos takes a form appropriate to that. Instead of choral song-and-dance, what follows, after an exceptionally brief non-strophic ‘entry’-passage, is an amoibaion first between the Chorus-leader and Iolaus, then between the Chorus-leader and the Herald, musical only as featuring some ‘half-chanted’ sequences in the Chorus-leader's utterances.

Abstract:
The friendly expatriate ladies of the chorus in Helen enter having heard loud lamentation issuing from the palace, while engaged, like the Φ⋯λα of the chorus in Hippolytus 125ff., in spreading laundered crimson textiles to dry in the sun. The central theme of ‘hearing cries’, with the verb ἒκλυον and nouns of utterance (185–6), is reminiscent also of Medea 131ff., where the opening words of the Parodos ἒκλυον Φων⋯ν, ἒκλυον δ⋯ βο⋯ν… allude to Medea's loud utterances ἒсωθεν in 96ff. (ἰώ…) and 111ff. (αἰαî…): here, as there, the Parodos exploits the familiar motif of βοηδρομ⋯α.

Full text
Abstract:
Freezing survival may differ among winters in chorus frogs ( Pseudacris triseriata (Wied-Neuwied, 1838)), and low freezing survival is associated with low hepatic glycogen stores. The pattern of prehibernation liver glycogen accumulation in chorus frogs is unknown. Frogs might accumulate hepatic glycogen stores until a threshold level sufficient for winter survival is attained, after which frogs enter hibernation (critical threshold hypothesis). According to this model, frogs active late in the season should only be those with low hepatic glycogen stores. Alternatively, hepatic glycogen levels might continue to increase throughout the fall as long as frogs remain active (continuous increase hypothesis). We tested these hypotheses by measuring liver and leg muscle glycogen, glucose, and glycogen phosphorylase activities in chorus frogs throughout the fall prehibernation period in southeastern South Dakota. Hepatic glycogen levels were significantly related to date and increased throughout the fall period, consistent with the continuous increase hypothesis. This suggests that hepatic glycogen levels do not serve as a cue for entrance into hibernation. Liver phosphorylase activity did not vary significantly with progression of the fall season and activity was lower than in winter, suggesting that the winter increment of phosphorylase activity requires some stimulus during hibernation (e.g., low temperatures).

Abstract:
Vocal output during the dawn chorus is often an honest indicator of male quality, where males with greater access to food and in better condition produce more vocalizations. We compare the vocal output among male mountain chickadees living along an urbanization gradient to assess how urbanization affects male signalling. Chickadees forage in the canopy, and because urban habitats are associated with lower canopy volume, we predicted that urban habitats may offer lower food and thus lead to reduced song output. Contrary to our predictions, males in more urbanized habitats had greater vocal output. We suggest that despite decreased canopy cover, urban birds may have greater access to food in both the breeding and pre-breeding seasons due to differences in both supplementary resources and vegetation composition of urban vs rural landscapes in our area. Living in urban habitats may allow males to enter the breeding season in better condition.

McLister, James D. "The metabolic cost of amplexus in the grey tree frog (Hyla versicolor): assessing the energetics of male mating success." Canadian Journal of Zoology 81, no. 3 (March 1, 2003): 388–94. http://dx.doi.org/10.1139/z03-013.

Full text
Abstract:
The metabolic cost of amplexus was calculated for 37 pairs of grey tree frogs, Hyla versicolor, by measuring the rate of O2 consumption of each amplexed pair and the combined resting rates of O2 consumption of the two individuals of each pair, and calculating the difference. The mean cost of amplexus was 1.20 mL O2·h–1 for each pair. The cost of amplexus was correlated with the mass of the males but not the mass of the females, and amplexus with artificial males did not have a significant effect on female metabolic rate. Therefore, the cost of amplexus appears to be incurred entirely by the male. Reproductively successful males spend less time calling per evening than reproductively unsuccessful males, leaving the chorus early to enter into amplexus. The mass-specific cost of amplexus (0.158 mL O2·g–1·h–1) is approximately 1/10 the mass-specific cost of call production (1.620 mL O2·g–1·h–1), and net energy consumption per evening is less for reproductively successful male H. versicolor than it is for reproductively unsuccessful males. The probability of future reproductive success is enhanced if reproductive success is energetically less expensive than reproductive failure.

Abstract:
Philoctetes was a good man and a good soldier. When he was on his way to Troy to fight alongside the Greeks, he had a terrible misfortune. By sheer accident he trespassed in a sacred precinct on the island of Lemnos. As punishment he was bitten on the foot by the serpent who guarded the shrine. His foot began to ooze with foul-smelling pus, and the pain made him cry out curses that spoiled the other soldiers' religious observances. They therefore left him alone on the island, a lame man with no resources but his bow and arrows, no friends but the animals who were also his food.Ten years later, according to Sophocles' version of the story, they come to bring him back: for they have learned that they cannot win the war without him. The leaders of the expedition think of Philoctetes as a tool of their purposes; they plan to trick him into returning, with no empathy for his plight. The Chorus of soldiers, however, has a different response. Even before they see the man, they imagine vividly what it is like to be him– and they enter a protest against the callousness of the commanders:For my part, I pity him– thinking of how, with no living soul to care for him, seeing no friendly face, wretched, always alone, he suffers with a fierce affliction, and has no resources to meet his daily needs. How in the world does the poor man survive?

Abstract:
Society is becoming increasingly aware of the value of healthy aquatic ecosystems as well as the effects that man’s activities have on those ecosystems. In recent years, many urban and industrial sources of contamination have been reduced or eliminated. The agricultural community also has worked towards reducing off-site movement of agricultural chemicals, but their use in farming is still growing. A small fraction, estimated at <1 to 2% of the pesticides applied to crops are lost from fields and enter nearby streams during rainfall events. In many cases aquatic organisms are exposed to mixtures of chemicals, which may lead to greater non-target risk than that predicted based on traditional risk assessments for single chemicals. We evaluated the potential toxicity of environmental mixtures of 5 classes of pesticides using concentrations from water samples collected from ∼50 sites on midwestern streams during late spring or early summer runoff events in 1989 and 1998. Toxicity index values are calculated as the concentration of the compound in the sample divided by the EC50 or LC50 of an aquatic organism. These index values are summed within a pesticide class and for all classes to determine additive pesticide class and total pesticide toxicity indices. Toxicity index values greater than 1.0 indicate probable toxicity of a class of pesticides measured in a water sample to aquatic organisms. Results indicate that some samples had probable toxicity to duckweed and green algae, but few are suspected of having significant toxicity to bluegill sunfish or chorus frogs.

Full text
Abstract:
The separate entrances of the male and female semi-choruses in Aristophanes' Lysistrata are marked by an unusual bit of stagecraft whose importance to a general theme of the play the salvation of Athens–has never been fully appreciated. The old men enter the stage at v. 254 each carrying a pair of olive-wood logs, a vine torch and a small pot of live embers. Having heard that Lysistrata and her comrades have taken control of the Acropolis, they come intent on burning down the gates of the citadel and removing the women, whom they liken to the Spartan general Cleomenes who occupied the citadel in 510. The men pile their logs before the closed gate, ignite their torches in the hot coals and then try to set fire to the logs (vv. 307-11). But after a few minutes of hilarious bumbling their plans are foiled for good by the sudden appearance of a semi-chorus of old women who rush in with water-jars on their shoulders or in their hands; these women threaten the men and then finally–with an invocation of the river-god Achelous douse them and their fire (vv. 381-82), thus effectively ending the threat of incineration. In the past, this entire choral routine has been explained in one of two ways: either it is a standard bit of slapstick humour with no importance whatsoever to the development of the comic plot, or it is part of an elaborate sexual pun of Freudian proportions in which the closed entranceway to the Acropolis assaulted by men symbolically prefigures the battle of the sexes that is about to ensue. Of course given the wonderful richness and polyvalence of Aristophanic comedy, it is extremely difficult to deny either of these interpretations. I shall argue here, however, that the staging of the parodos also reflects a very popular type of Greek salvation myth, known to the Athenians from the tragic stage, from the visual arts and from rituals associated with local mystery cults. In light of these parallels drawn from the theatrical and religious life of the city, I shall argue that when the audience saw the women rush onto the stage with their hydriai, they would have undoubtedly seen them in a very positive light as saviours of the city–precisely the role they claim for themselves later in the play.

Abstract:
Two scales were constructed to separately evaluate the perceptual and motor difficulty of the finger chords employed to enter letters in a newly designed chord keyboard, developed to provide an efficient alternative to the existing QWERTY keyboard. The index of motor difficulty evaluated the biomechanical problems associated with the execution of the 31 possible chord combinations of five-fingers. The perceptual index scaled the difficulty of identifying the spatial pattern created by each of the 31 chords. A regression equation that was based on the two indexes accounted for about 60% of the variance of actual typing on the chord keyboard. Perceptual and motor determinants appear to be equally potent and mostly independent in their influence on efficient data entry performance.

Abstract:
In Act III of Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, the chaplain Raimondo appears at the wedding celebrations to tell the assembled guests that Lucia has murdered her husband Arturo. While the chorus expresses shock, Lucia enters, dishevelled and deranged; the crowd turns towards her, murmuring ‘Par dalla tomba uscita!’ This image of a figure emerging from the grave, certainly apt by nineteenth-century poetic standards, also suggests itself as a contemporary metaphor: a shift in critical reception. Traditionally, a noisy chorus of operatic critics has regarded Lucia with a mixture of fascination and horror, emphasising the sepulchral aspects of her madness. Recently, however, a rather surprising resurrection has been effected through the notion, popular among some feminist critics, that Lucia's mental decline could be interpreted as positive, even liberatory. This view has been expressed most flamboyantly by Catherine Clément, for whom madness is one of the few ways an operatic heroine can escape the near-inevitable plot process of seduction and death. Her effusions on Lucia's mad scene illustrate this position vividly: ‘Lucia dances with her desires: listen how joyful, airy and peaceful it is. Who says anything about unhappiness? Madwomen's voices sing the most perfect happiness’

Abstract:
The article discusses the specifics of children's music on the example of the collection "Pieces for Kids" by Edison Denisov. The authors use the example of the analysis of the musical language of this collection to define the specifics of music for kids of the second half of the twentieth century in general and some features of the author's style of Denisov in particular. Despite the traditional nature of the chosen means of musical expression, based on the basic principles of tonal organization (functionality, connection between harmony and form creation, etc.), the pieces sound very fresh and modern. This explains the fact that the pieces in the collection are difficult to enter into the pedagogical repertoire. At the same time, the composer expands the tonality by means of various types of major-minor (of the same name, parallel, one-point), and also uses the means of chromatic tonality. Updating the musical language is associated with updating the chord. Denisov uses not only chords of the third structure, but also fourth, second chords and accords. The modal structure of the pieces is also diverse. Along with major and minor, the collection contains examples of using a natural diatonic modes.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Although the face possesses potent social and symbolic meaning, the “dancing face” is rarely addressed in dance scholarship. In spite of its neglect, the face participates choreographically in the realization of aesthetic codes and embodied conventions that pertain to different dance styles and genres. I therefore turn to Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari's (1987) theory of “faciality” to understand the semiotic coding of the face in relation to the Busby Berkeley chorus girl. Although their work offers an important critique of universalist theorizations of facial expression, I argue that “facial choreography” offers scope to dismantle the legibility of the face that is produced through the overcoded “abstract machine of faciality.” To do so, I introduce the concept of a “choreographic interface” to explore how facial expression enters into a choreographic relationship with other faces and bodily territories. With this in mind, I explore two dancing bodies that engage the face in ways that complicate existing modalities of facial expression. I analyze a hip-hop battle and a neo-burlesque striptease number to show how the mobility and ambiguity of facial choreography opens a dialogic space through which meaning is generated and social and political critique take place.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Racial issues are increasingly visible in current times and it is essential to speak and listen to the body in relationships, in the face of the suffering caused by racism. Racism causes suffering and can kill. There are many ways to kill and die. The breath and throat are affected by choking or muting the voice, the vehicle of expression and autonomy of thought. Racism is in the air and all bodily senses recognize it. It enters the throat and chokes. It touches the skin and freezes. Racist ideology enters and roots the body and the mind. It registers internal memories that will communicate in gestures and attitudes in the white body and in the black body. In society, the white body will present itself as a place of privilege. Listening attentively to the analyst in race relations involves listening to oneself, being involved in the context, and recognizing the relationship of these socially marked bodies that solidify inequality. Listening is the art of caring, as it leads to transformations toward the rescue of free movements of the breath, the body and the mind.

Abstract:
Pregnancy is seen as a time of joy and anticipation but sadly for some women it is a time when they suffer violence and abuse. Pregnancy can cause to stress in any type of relationship, and it’s a common cause of domestic violence. The emotional abuse and violence may begin or get worse during pregnancy. One third participants had experienced emotional and physical violence in present pregnancy. Participants experienced emotional violence such as: verbally abused, threatened to leave spousal house, threatened for remarriage, and restricted to enter the kitchen and their belongings were thrown out etc. Participants experienced punched, pushed on the floor/walls, slapped, kicked, beaten everywhere in the body, hit by fire wood and hair pulled. The causes were inter caste marriage, sub fertility, not working properly at home, dowry related and personal habits of alcoholism/ gambling of the husband etc. The consequences of domestic violence exhibited by the pregnant women felt pain and agony, feeling helpless, wanted to terminate pregnancy, wanted to break the marital relationship, feeling to suicide, backache, and high blood pressure. Experience of emotional violence is more prevalent than physical violence. Main causes of domestic violence are inter caste marriage, sub fertility, demanding of money and valuable things (dowry), drinking and gambling habit of husband and not working properly at home. Husbands and mother in-laws are the main perpetrators. Abstract:
Summary Joint involvement of couples is an effective strategy to increase contraceptive use and improve reproductive health of women. However, engaging couples to understand how their gender attitudes affect their personal and family health is an idea in search of practice. This mixed-methods study explores opportunities and barriers to couples' participation in health promotion in three slums of Delhi. For each couple, surveys and semi-structured interviews were conducted with husbands and wives individually to contrast self and spousal work, time, interest in health, sources of information related to health and depth of knowledge (n = 62). Urban poverty forces men to work long hours and women to enter part-time work in the informal sector. Paid work induces lack of availability at home, lack of interest in health information and in performing household chores and a self-perception of being healthy among men. These factors inhibit men's' participation in community-based health promotion activities. Women's unpaid work in the household remains unnoticed. Women were expected to be interested in and to make time to attend community-based health-related activities. Men recalled significantly less sources of health information than their spouse. Men and their wives showed similar depth of health-related knowledge, likely due to their spousal communication, with women acting as gatekeepers. Health promotion planners must recognize time constraints, reliance on informal interpersonal communication as a source of health information and the need to portray positive masculinities that address asymmetric gender relations. Innovative, continuous and collaborative approaches may support couples to proactively care about health in low-resource settings.

Abstract:
Purpose – Academic research has endeavoured to understand women's behaviours in entrepreneurial activity, identifying the differences when compared to men. The main topics analysed show similar findings in relation to characteristics and motivations, leadership style, strategic choice, obstacles and results. This paper delves further into these differences by examining the personal characteristics of entrepreneurs, the motivation to enter the activity and the performance of their enterprises. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – The authors study Spanish entrepreneurial activity using a survey carried out in 2009 of 608 randomly selected entrepreneurs. The main methods used are descriptive analyses and logistic estimations. Findings – There were two groups of entrepreneurial women with different profiles and results: the first group comprises a variety of sectors reflecting the economy's average; and the second mainly operates in those sectors traditionally considered as female. Male and female reasons for success and survival are found to be substantially the same, but personal characteristics and motivations were found to be different. Among the differences found, it is worth highlighting the amount of time devoted by entrepreneurial women to household chores, the higher proportion of women in the staff they employ, and their commitment to product and service innovation. Social implications – The findings point to some ideas in terms of policies regarding entrepreneurial activity and gender. The women's greater commitment to innovation in goods and services suggests new approaches in policies aimed at promoting the entry of women in entrepreneurial activity. Originality/value – The main findings of the paper are consistent with relevant existing literatures, but the results offer new insights that contribute to improving the knowledge of the dynamics of entrepreneurial women.

Abstract:
Problem statement. Musical director’s activity of an opera performance is a complex phenomenon and largely unexplored, in particular, the theoretical aspects of the conductor’s interpretation of the opera have not received a sufficient development in domestic musicology yet. In the theoretical aspect not only the role of the conductor-director, but also co-directors of an opera performance – a director, a choirmaster and others who in cooperation create an artistic image of an opera spectacle is insufficiently investigated. The necessity of exploration of practical issues of the opera’s interpretation for further theoretical generalizations, awareness of specifics of the various performing interpretations determines the relevance of the topic of the offered article. The recent researches and publications by O. Menkov, P. Lando, G. Tkachenko and V. Makarenko emphasize the need of creation of the theory of collective performing, in particular, of the opera works, as well as the conductor’s role as a head of staging process. Admitting all the above, we insist also the necessity of developing a shared position by the all co-creators of the performance (a conductor, a stage director, a choirmaster, a ballet master, a painter and others). The purpose of the study – to reveal the specifics of the creation of the performing interpretation in student’s opera theater on the example of the work of opera studio of the Kharkiv National University of Arts named after I. P. Kotlyarevsky. The methodology of the research includes the interpretive analysis, chosen for understanding and explanation the specifics of the opera performance, as well as retrospective historical observations over the working process in Opera Studio of Kharkiv University of Art on the cusp of the 20th and 21st centuries with followed by generalization. Results. As the research material, the creative activity of the opera studio’s team under the leadership of the People’s Artist of Ukraine, professor of Solo Singing and Opera Training Department of Kharkiv National University of Arts was chosen. During the period since 1989 year to present time about 30 operas were staged in Opera Studio under the leadership of the Maestro. Co-organization persons of the opera studio’s performances were the stage directors I. Ryvina, O. Kolomiytsev, A. Kaloyan, the choirmasters – Honored Arts Workers of Ukraine professor N. Byelik-Zolotaryova (in performances 1989–2008, from 2013 and to present day) and associate professor I. Verbitska (during the period from 2009 to 2012), which also was executed the functions of the conductor of performances of student’s opera theater. The concertmasters headed by professor L. Kucher carried out studying the musical material of operas by students. According to our explorations, the principles of selection of operas for production in the Opera Studio became: art value of the chosen sample; presence of performance stuff among undergraduates of Department of the Solo Singing to create the main and secondary characters; vocal possibilities of young performers (because the opera studio is the student’s opera theater); the material base for creation of sceneries, tailoring the costumes etc.; demand of the chosen sample in opera theaters. For identification of the specifics of production process in student’s opera theater two representative samples were chosen: the production versions of the operas “The love for three oranges” by S. Prokofiev (18.12.1989, the stage director I. Ryvina, the choirmaster N. Byelik-Zolotaryova, the painter T. Medvid) and “Dido and Aeneas” by H. Purcell (19.11.2001, the stage director O. Kolomiytsev, the head of the opera’s staging I. Ryvina, the choirmaster N. Byelik-Zolotaryova, the painter K. Kolesnichenko), under maestro A. V. Kalabukhin’s conducting. The choice of these opera samples by Kharkiv University Opera Studio brightly demonstrates the essence of its repertoire policy, which is concluded in selection for staging the operas of different styles and directions. The performing conception of the opera “The love for three oranges” was built, on the one hand, on the understanding of this musically-scenic opus as the embodiment of the forms of “conditional theater”, on the other hand – as solution to the problem about essence of art, the theatricalized answer to the question, which it should be. The staging of the first English opera “Dido and Aeneas” by H. Purcell was directed on comprehension and acquisition by students of Baroque stylistics in an opera genre. Conclusions. As features of the staging process in the opera studio, it should be noted, at first, the synthesis of creative and pedagogical orientation in the activities of the producers of performances. So, in the student opera the conductor on rehearsals not only builds the structure of the opera whole, seeking an ensemble between performers-soloists, chorus and orchestra, but also is at work with students upon the technique of sound articulation (breathing, diction, phrasing), upon the emotional and meaning content of music. The rehearsals of young singers with stage directors also have a clear pedagogical orientation, presupposing detailed explanations of both the general line of development of the image and the specific situational details of the behavior of the character in different stages of the opera. An integral part of the artistic and pedagogical process, when creating the performance of the opera studio, the work of professional collectives is: choir and orchestra, which helps the student to enter the atmosphere of a real opera art. In the above successful performances of the Opera Studio of Kharkiv National University of Arts, the choir sound (choirmaster N. Byelik-Zolotaryova) featured a magnificent ensemble, a variety of dynamics, expressiveness of the word, intelligent emotionality, spirituality. Under the direction of A. Kalabukhin and I. Verbitska, the orchestra supported young performers by naturally way, and in solo instrumental episodes it showed the timbre saturation and completeness of expression of a musical thought. In the process of ground work on the performance, one should pay attention to certain organizational moments on which its success depends, namely, the drawing up of a clear schedule of rehearsals depending on the employment of students at lectures and the availability of the own premises for orchestral and stage rehearsals and performances. Given the sufficiently limited number of such rehearsals before the premiere, as well as the pedagogic orientation of student opera performance, it is extremely important to coordinate the actions of all the co-directors of the performances. A conductor, a director, a choirmaster, a painter, a costume designer and others have to adhere to the general artistic idea of the work, which clarified by the way of preliminary joint discussion.

Abstract:
Circumstances that affect domestic consumption in Spain from a gender perspective Abstract: This work aims at analysing the differences affecting men and women in charge of the shopping, taking into account that socio-demographic and socio-laboral circunstances, the roles and the subjective appreciation of consumption (satisfaction and happiness) affect both sexes in different ways. The results show that domestic consumption is not the same for men and women, but it is more shared than other domestics chores. This non-equal distribution of responsibilities regarding domestic consumption is grounded on traditional family stereotypes. By comparing two lineal regression analyses, one for men and the other for women, we prove that the circumstances pushing women to do the shopping are more numerous that those pushing men to do so.

Abstract:
The body postures intending to execute daily and labor chores such as sitting, grabbing, holding and moving objects, among others, are often responsible by the strain upon certain articulations and muscles, especially when done in a wrong way, not respecting the biomechanical principies.2 In order to efficiently check the body posture adopted under various everyday situations, an instrument of evaluation through video was designed and valided, based on the original test of dynamic posture, by Basler, Beisenherz-Hahn, Frank, Griss, Herda, Keller (1 993) adapted by Souza (1995), which allows us to judge the different movements and body postures under previously settled criteria. To obtain the validation of the instrument ten subjects were filmed, being later analyzed by three professional in dynamic body posture. The results of the statistical treatment showed a high index (Cronbach Alpha) of inner consistence for ali the analyzed criteria and a high correlation (Spearman) among the raters making this a reliable instrument.

*** Notes about (or chords for) By night in Chile, the noisy storm of Roberto Bolaño ***By night in Chile, by Roberto Bolaño, works as an authentic literary machine of denunciation, of intoned irony and instigating aesthetic labor. The present essay seeks to analyze the formal subtleties that Bolaño develops in the controversial internal struggle between the narrator’s memories and the historically contextualized narrative matter, in order to understand how the notion of the gift for listening, composed by Walter Benjamin and rearticulated by Jacques Derrida, is pertinent for a critical reading of the book, which, in turn, invokes debates about the problem of alterity, affection, responsibility, and finally, ethics in the face of cruelty and the possibility of producing a poetics of listening in contemporary times. Keywords: By night in Chile; gift for listening; poetics of listening; Roberto Bolaño; alterity.

Abstract:
[Full article is in Spanish]English: Presently, international development organizations have adopted gender perspectives in all policy spheres as a transversal approach as a result of a process that has transited through different foci since the 1950s. Nonetheless, different studies have highlighted the fact that implementation is limited beyond the recurring discourses of governments, non-governmental organizations and funding agencies. We can speak of a discrepancy between rhetoric and practice around gender in development policies, a subject that lies on the edges of power. Furthermore, there is another discrepancy between policy analysis and a gender perspective, where we find little research that achieves a theoretical articulation between two traditions that somehow seem irreconcilable. This article aims to initiate a reflection on that which it identifies as a double discrepancy between gender and policies focused on the edges of power: the failure to integrate gender in development policies and the difficult theoretical articulation of gender within policy. Faced with this double discrepancy, the article proposes some points of convergence around an inclusion of power relations both as a goal of development policies and a policy analysis.

Abstract:
In May-June 2002, as part of a survey of a variety of taxa in the James Bay region of Ontario and Québec, we surveyed the poorly documented herpetofauna of this region. In Ontario we visited sites near Moosonee that FWS had previously surveyed in 1971-1972, and continued ongoing herpetological monitoring around Cochrane. In Québec we surveyed the inland James Bay Road, and roads to four settlements along the coast. American Toad (Anaxyrus americanus), Spring Peeper (Pseudacris crucifer), and Wood Frog (Lithobates sylvaticus) were widespread and abundant throughout. Blue-spotted Salamander (Ambystoma laterale) and Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis) were widespread and common in Québec and at the study site near Cochrane. We obtained the first taped calls and voucher specimen of the Boreal Chorus Frog (Pseudacris maculata) from Québec, and failed to find it at the settlement and airport of Moosonee where it had been present in 1972. A significant range extension was for the Two-lined Salamander (Eurycea bislineata), which we found 200 km north of its previously known range in northwestern Québec. Despite extensive searches, the species was not found north of 52°05'N. The Mink Frog (Lithobates septentrionalis) was widespread and relatively common in Québec, but was sought but not found in Ontario. The Leopard Frog (Lithobates pipiens) was only found at two Québec sites, including one where it was reported in 1974, but it has not been found at any of the Ontario sites where it was found in the 1970's. We present some suggestions for the further study of the herpetofauna of the area, and review evidence for contacts between eastern and western lineages of widespread species.

Abstract:
Abstract. Feminization of poverty is referred to as the most characteristic feature of contemporary poverty. This term applies to a greater share of women in the population at risk of poverty and the consequences of poverty for women, the difference between the poverty of women and men as well as a deeper poverty of households where a woman is the main breadwinner. Feminization of poverty in Poland can be seen in various areas of social life. On the macro scale, it is related to the situation of women in the labour market (lower employment rate, higher long-term unemployment rate, difficulties in finding employment and reintegration into the labour market) and to the area of income (lower wages and retirement benefits). On the other hand, the feminisation of poverty and social exclusion in the microscale of the family and household is related to the unequal distribution of household chores and duties on the basis of gender. Additionally, what seems to be important here is the question of money management and controlling household expenses. Women are more likely than men to be at risk of poverty because they are more frequently faced with social problems such as domestic violence, partner alcoholism, loneliness and due to their disproportionately low participation in public and political life. The paper was based on empirical research which had a qualitative (90 individual in-depth interviews with social workers) and quantitative nature (500 Computer Assisted Telephone Interviews with social workers from all of Poland). Keywords: poverty, feminization of poverty, social assistance, social workers, gender.

Abstract:
<div class="WordSection1"><p><em>In many traditional societies, women play an important role as informal caregiver. They take care of small children, family members who are disabled, old and frail. They perform their role within the private family sphere without much complaints. However when many women enter labour force outside their family many of them can no longer become family care giver. The seperation between nuclear familes and extended families due to rural urban migration makes older women like mothers and mothers in-law can no longer available to provide help. As an alternative, many urban families opt for domestic help to look after their young children, disabled family members and the elderly. Domestic helpers continue their domestic chores as instructed by the lady of the house an at the same time perform caregiving role. The important issue related to having domestic maid to perform care giving role especially in Muslim family is regarding physical contact. Most of the activities in caregiving roles involves physical contact especially during cleaning patients body, changing their clothes, prepare their bed, feeding them, holding their hands and body for therapy. However Islamic paractice do not allow physical contact like touching between two people who are not close family relations or mahram. Since most of domestic maid who also perform the role as caregiver are women, therefore the issue of empowering men to become caregiver is very important because the needs of male caregivers to care for male patients is increasing. Based onwhat is stated in the Quran and hadith and related documents, this paper will outline the need for informal care in families and communities that need to be addressed, particularly those who are Syariah-compliant. Cases from research in the relevant field will be presented to highlight the issues why men should be encourage to consider role as informal caregivers.</em><em></em></p><p>Dalam banyak masyarakat tradisional, perempuan memainkan peran penting sebagai pengasuh informal.

Abstract:
This article questions Nicolas Bouvier’s photography during his travels and the way in which images created during this time suggest travel as a state of being. Taking pictures as a means of notetaking, Bouvier records his perceptions and findings through the medium of photography. Within photographic motifs referring to the experience of travel (roads, the taking of close-up details, the lack of concern for technique), the sense of movement can be seen, as well as the subjectivity of the writer-traveller.
