Statistics on place of death, validated against longitudinal evidence on the entrance into nursing homes, show the “final” rate of institutionalization to have risen in the decades between 1938 and 1975 in Sweden. In a local study, 15 percent entered a nursing home between the ages of sixty-seven and eighty, which seems representative of national trends. The “final” rate is estimated to be between 22 percent and a maximum of about 40 percent. Currently, the socially and economically deprived dominate in Swedish nursing homes just as they did in the poor house of the past. Yet, rising rates may

Colleges and universities welcome new students every September. After the intense study in high school, the new university life will make the new students feel excited and embarrassed. They are about to face and meet new life, new ways of learning, new classmates and teachers, and so on. Since the new things and environment are very different from those for the new students before they entered the school, we need to pay attention to their psychological changes and promptly channel their psychological problems, otherwise it will cause a lot of psychological discomfort, and maybe it will have so

Abstract. Ambulatory assessment refers to the use of computer-assisted methodology for self-reports, behavior records, or physiological measurements, while the participant undergoes normal daily activities. Since the 1980s, portable microcomputer systems and physiological recorders/analyzers have been developed for this purpose. In contrast to their use in medicine, these new methods have hardly entered the domain of psychology. Questionnaire methods are still preferred, in spite of the known deficiencies of retrospective self-reports. Assessment strategies include: continuous monitoring, moni

Two new second-generation cephalosporin derivatives with extended half-lives, ceforanide and cefonicid, have recently entered the U.S. marketplace. Because longer dosing intervals require fewer daily doses, potential exists for overall cost reduction if pharmacy and nursing time can be effectively saved. Reduction in personnel costs, however, must be sufficient for these more expensive products to be truly cost effective. We studied the impact of substituting these newer agents for older, less expensive products with formulary status at our 200-bed community hospital. Results show that no nurs

SynopsisGoodwin Wharton (1653–1704) was a nobleman's son and a Whig MP who played no small part in English public life. His manuscript journal shows, however, that he also lived a bizarre secret life of the mind of a kind which, in later generations, would have led to his confinement as suffering from mental illness. Above all, through the offices of his medium and lover, Mary Parish, he entered into elaborate relations both with the fairy world and with God and His Angels.
