Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to consolidate the critical success factors (CSFs) as published in enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation case studies. The authors perform the analysis and propose the final CSFs based on the reported ERP implementation process stages. Design/methodology/approach – The paper follows the eight category coding steps proposed by Carley (1993) and utilizes only ERP implementation case studies to identify a distinct set of critical success factors. The 37 case studies used in this paper provide a reasonable sample from different countries and contexts. Two methodologies were followed, one for the literature review process and the other for the analysis and synthesis. Findings – Out of 64 reported CSFs that were extracted from the literature and subsequent detailed analysis and synthesis the authors found a total of 22 factors that are distinct. These factors which encompass change management, are proposed with five ERP implementation stages. Research limitations/implications – The final set of success factors proposed in this study gives a consolidated and unified view of the significant variables to be considered during all the stages of ERP implementation. The research is limited to case study literature and does not account for ERP implementation models and frameworks. Another limitation would be the scope of the literature searched which is that of the Management Information Community. Practical implications – The proposed CSFs can be used by practitioners in five ways: assess implementation of an ERP; ex-ante assessment; comparative analysis with other implementation experiences; utilize CSFs from model as part of key performance indicators; and utilize the model to establish a concise strategy to project management process for the ERP implementation. Social implications – ERP implementation is complex. The promise has not yet been fully realized. An ERP-enabled organization entails primarily strategy and change management. To that effect, all stakeholders are impacted by ERP implementation. This paper, identified CSFs extracted from cases of ERP implementation and proposes a model to support its project management, user satisfaction and sustainability. The results aim at reducing costs, maintaining timeline, reducing employee anxieties and with a successful implementation, better service to customer base. Originality/value – This paper is the first attempt to present a consolidated list of CSFs and mapping them to the stages of an ERP implementation as reported from the industry. It originality is its focus on utilizing rigorous published case studies with the hope that future case studies would utilize the work to report on the same factors. The value is that as the case studies are increased, comparison and differentiation between is enhanced.

Abstract:
PurposeThis research aims to explore the enabling and constraining effects of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems and speculate on how these can be linked to the four generic roles of operations management (OM) proposed by Slack et al.Design/methodology/approachThis research understands ERP as boundary objects characterised by modularity, abstraction, accommodation, and standardization. An in‐depth cross‐disciplinary literature review and role synthesis is conducted.FindingsFour enabling and three constraining effects of ERP are deduced from existing literature. ERP and OM are linked conceptually. Based on the identified effects of ERP, the paper speculates on the managerial tasks of the production and operations manager (POM) in an ERP environment and lists a set of central concerns of potential relevance to POM and to future research.Research limitations/implicationsThe identified roles of ERP and their implications could be empirically tested using case based and survey research.Practical implicationsThe results provide insights into how ERP has multiple and parallel roles, and how these roles are relevant to the function of OM. Such knowledge is valuable for practicing POMs in managing the implementation and design of ERP to support the different domains of OM.Originality/valueCurrent studies of the effects of ERP and their link to the practice of OM tend to focus on one or a few roles of the emerging system. Such studies do not properly take into account the modularised and pluralistic nature of ERP. This research provides a platform from where future research on the effects, managerial dilemmas and implications of ERP can be reconciled across research communities.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to propose an implementation model for enterprise resource planning (ERP) based on resource-based view, and using the dynamic capability theory as its theoretical foundation. This model includes: the establishment of the objectives of the implementation, an assessment of the available resources and the scope of the implementation, the redesign/integration and organizational learning during the process, the implementation of the system, and the measurement and evaluation of its performance. Design/methodology/approach – An integrated circuits design company in Taiwan was used in a case study to examine the validity of the proposed model. Findings – When the proposed ERP implementation model was applied in this study, the results show that organizational coordination, system-process redesign and integration, and organizational learning are the critical strategies for enterprises, in order to reduce the risks during the implementation of ERP projects. Practical implications – This model can help enterprises recognize the resources needed when implementing an ERP. In addition, they need to consider the reliability of these resources, as this will increase the efficiency of the implementation, and thus the probability of success. Originality/value – Studies of past models in the implementation of ERP have been conducted in various industries. There is a need for further studies that evaluate the different concepts in terms of the effectiveness of specific methods, in order to enhance the probability of successfully implementing a dynamic system. This paper is one of the first to explain how an enterprise can implement an ERP that is based on the theory of dynamic capabilities. The case study illustrates the important, critical success factors.

Abstract:
Today, enterprise resource planning system (ERP) becomes popular and it is implemented in most business (in all fields and sizes) all over the world as well as in Vietnam. However, according to consultant experts, ERP projects, though on a large scale with high cost, entail low success rate. For Vietnamese contexts, those findings above are all the more true, because most of Vietnamese enterprises are on a small scale with short-time computerization access, lack of understanding of enterprise systems, and lack of financial resources. This research focuses on exploring key factors affecting the success of ERP projects in Vietnam. Through case studies and data collection, using SPSS for data analysis, key factors affecting the success of ERP projects are listed on such a descending order as follows: Characteristics of ERP team, Quality of consultancy, Characteristics of end-users and Characteristics of business. From the abovementioned analysis, suggestions for ensuring success of ERPs in Vietnam are also proposed.

Abstract:
In this thesis success and failure of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations through case studies of three Turkish organizations based on Critical Success Factors (CSFs) is investigated. The main purpose of this thesis is to reveal success and failure stories according to the effects of CSFs in ERP implementations. The case studies are composed of three Turkish organizations from different sectors. The data is gathered through active observations, analysis of project documents and interviews conducted with project managers who decided to implement ERP systems in their organizations, key users who involved in implementation projects, and consultants. All these projects are evaluated as success stories since most of the determined CSFs affected the implementation projects positively in these three organizations which have been using ERP system effectively for some period. Besides, the case studies show that there are problems about training, change management and legacy systems during projects and more attention should be paid on these issues during ERP implementation projects.

This dissertation discusses the use and difficulties of obtaining benefits when adopting ERP systems. Although this topic is widely discussed in the literature, there is still a perceived lack of qualitative studies that deepen the understanding. The theoretical framework Acceptance Model Technology (TAM) is perhaps the one that best fits the discussions about the reasons why a new technology is not fully utilized by organizations. In this sense, the main purpose of this study was to evaluate the TAM model and present the main variables that impact on the level of usage of ERP and in addition, empirical data demonstrating the low ROI when using the ERP system is low. The research in this study, therefore examines - in a given organizational context - how to reduce the perception of ease of use and usefulness of ERP through two propositions drawn from qualitative literature: characteristics of initial design and changes in the external environment (business and law). The results of the dissertation show that the company does not use the whole system. Around 30% of the initial, defined design features were no longer used after a certain time. The conclusions suggested from the analysis, found that the design characteristics and changes in the external environment (business and law) influence the low utilization of the system and directly affect the level of use of the ERP system. The appreciated value of the effort expended in these activities and identified cost saving opportunity is $25 million a year, if these activities are executed in the ERP.

Abstract:
Case study research on enterprise systems in higher education organizations has shown that the challenges associated with implementing enterprise systems in higher education occur when unique organizational characteristics found in universities do not align with the standard characteristics built into the software programs. Based on such findings, the purpose of this study was to further explore the interaction between higher education organizations and enterprise systems during Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementations in order to gain insight into the effects of ERP implementations in higher education. Through the theoretical lens of actor-network theory, the purposes of this comparative case study at three universities were to identify (a) how higher education organizations re-structured to the standards of the enterprise software, (b) how ERP software was customized in order to adapt to the characteristics of higher education organizations, and (c) how the enterprise software and higher education organizations interacted and translated into a unique identity as a result of ERP implementation. The data for the study were collected through semi-structured interviews and institutional artifacts at three universities which were commonly bound by similar institutional characteristics and the same enterprise software. Further, the study was limited to the examination of the interaction between individuals associated with the registrars' offices at the three institutions and the student module found in each instance of the software. The data revealed that, while the institutions did not organizationally restructure or make policy changes in order to adapt their institutions with the infrastructure of the software, the registrars' offices made many reactionary changes in their business processes, procedures, and nature of work as a result of the enterprise system implementation. The data also revealed that the software customizations, developed to account for unique statutory requirements, caused overwhelming implementation challenges during the enterprise software implementation and post-implementation phases.

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems have evolved from the Material Requirements Planning (MRP) systems and, accordingly, manufacturing companies represent the natural environment for their application. Nevertheless, ERP systems have also been introduced to different environments (e.g. service industries, refineries etc) with considerable success. However, comparatively little research has been conducted in the area of ERP implementation in such contexts of application.

This project was conducted as a case analysis of the Navy's ERP efforts, from the decision to adopt ERP up to the current Navy ERP program. The objective of the report was to develop a singlesource document which provides the reader with enough information to have an understanding of the ERP efforts within the Navy. This study analyzes the history of ERP systems and the lessons learned from the commercial sector. The revolution in business affairs motivated the Navy to adopt ERP systems in 1997 and an initial program consisting of four pilots was initiated at major shore commands. Although the Navy viewed the pilots as a success, Congress criticized the pilots as a waste of one billion dollars. The Navy is continuing with the project and will integrate them into the current Navy ERP (N-ERP) program. The program (N-ERP) was established in 2004 and is expected to be complete in 2011 at a cost of over 800 million dollars.

Abstract:
Abstract Background - Not all companies choose or are able to grow, especially not in an unstable economic climate. However, fast growing organizations (gazelles) have managed to grow with a significant pace. As researchers claim control to be one factor in developing an organization, this lead the authors to question whether these gazelle organizations perceive control systems to contribute to their rapid growth. Purpose - The authors wish to investigate whether strategic planning, enterprise resource planning and management system, as three different components of control, are present in gazelle organizations, and if they are perceived as contributors to growth. Method - The authors use a quantitative research approach and used a survey in order to capture the wider perspective of control. The chosen population is Swedish medium sized gazelle organizations. In order to analyze the findings, modified 6-point Likert-scale statements are included in the survey, where the authors interpret whether the respondents agree or disagree to the chosen statements, which are incorporated through the literature review. In addition to this, ANOVA tests are included to establish if there are significant differences among users and nonusers of the different control systems. Conclusion - The conclusions drawn from this study is that the usage of strategic planning and an enterprise resource planning system is common among the participating organizations. However, the majority do not use a management system. Despite the level of usage of the three different control systems, they are all perceived as beneficial for the organizations, and the respondents do believe that the systems contribute to their growth. In addition, there is no significant proof that there is a relationship between growth and using the control systems, when comparing the percentage increase in growth with using the different control systems.

Melrose, Heather. "How do resource foster parents conceptualize concurrent planning?" Thesis, McGill University, 2003. http://digitool.Library.McGill.CA:80/R/?func=dbin-jump-full&object_id=83166.

Full text
Abstract:
In this small qualitative study, the researcher explores how four families involved in resource foster care services conceptualize concurrent planning in the child welfare system. Analysis of the four semi-structured transcribed interviews revealed four dominant themes: hope and optimism that resource foster care could be a rewarding alternative to further infertility treatment; anger and fear of disruption related to birth family visits; identification of the foster child as their own; and uncertainty regarding resource foster care team rules, roles, and responsibilities. Each theme was influenced by an attachment to the child they were fostering and the fear of losing that child.
The findings suggest that resource foster parents do not fully embrace concurrent planning as a philosophy of care that supports and works towards the best interests of children. Practice principles central to concurrent planning were often abandoned as a result of intense identification with adoptive parenthood status.
The researcher has included a number of recommendations with respect to future studies, training needs, and recruitment strategies. The conclusion states that in the best interests of children, resource foster parents must fully embrace the concept of concurrent planning defined within child welfare context and legislation.

Abstract:
This research is concerned with the role played by integrated packaged software in organisations and the validity of the emerging notion of improvisation in implementing such systems. It is informed by the information systems (IS) literature on systems implementation, improvisation, and social shaping of technology, and by the social science literature on the role of technology in society. It is also guided by the sociological approach of Actor Network Theory (ANT). The study examines social and organisational efforts to implement Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems in two international organisations, taking account of the role played by the system itself. The research findings deny both the technology and social deterministic perspectives and argue that the technology effect is a result of negotiation between the technology and society. The findings also argue that implementing a large, integrated, module-based packaged IS like ERP can be seen as an improvised activity, in which the plan is an actor and that drift is inherent in the process of moving the multi-layered project into different social and technical networks. The research therefore contributes to the long-standing debate about technology determinism and social construction of technology. By focusing on a structured technology, such as ERP and its implementation, the study extends existing work that supports the argument of IS improvisation and makes significant progress in appropriating ANT for its application in IS research. This novel application of ANT as a theoretical framework and analytical vehicle provides an alternative way of analysing the role of technology in organisations. It supports the social contructivism view without undermining the role played by the technology. This could provide a solution to one of the main difficulties of IS research, namely accounting for the capacity of technology without losing the social focus. The research findings invite practitioners to rethink and reflect on two aspects: how the evaluation procedures of IS implementation and use can best incorporate and encourage the improvisation view; and the role of technology in organisations and the way integrated systems projects are managed.

Abstract:
The importance of aligning information technology and business strategies to exploit capabilities and change business practices has increased as firms strive for competitive advantage in a diverse and changing marketplace. Nevertheless, over 50% of firms implementing enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems ranked expected process and value enhancements as inadequate, whereas only 13% indicated that implementations met their needs. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model formed the conceptual framework of this single case study. The study comprised a purposeful sampling of 8 business managers in Southeast Alabama working in related job roles and based on established eligibility criteria. Data collection involved semistructured interviews, casual observations, and document analysis. Through method triangulation and predetermined themes directly related to the UTAUT conceptual framework, 5 themes emerged: management endorsement, change management, training and education, dedicated resources, and governance. Results of this research may influence the elimination of key barriers central in the deployment and adoption of ERP systems by the public sector. The study's implications for positive social change include the potential to enhance social and intellectual capital formation through recognizing strategies that mitigate employees' gender and age variances during an ERP implementation.

In ASME 2016 11th International Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/msec2016-8783.

Abstract:
The development of digital technologies for manufacturing has been challenged by the difficulty of navigating the breadth of new technologies available to industry. This difficulty is compounded by technologies developed without a good understanding of the capabilities and limitations of the manufacturing environment, especially within small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs). This paper describes industrial case studies conducted to identify the needs, priorities, and constraints of manufacturing SMEs in the areas of performance measurement, condition monitoring, diagnosis, and prognosis. These case studies focused on contract and original equipment manufacturers with less than 500 employees from several industrial sectors. Solution and equipment providers and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Hollings Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) centers were also included. Each case study involved discussions with key shop-floor personnel as well as site visits with some participants. The case studies highlight SME’s strong need for access to appropriate data to better understand and plan manufacturing operations. They also help define industrially-relevant use cases in several areas of manufacturing operations, including scheduling support, maintenance planning, resource budgeting, and workforce augmentation.

Tursunov, Bobir. "Strategic Planning of Production Capacities in Textile Enterprises." In International Conference on Eurasian Economies. Eurasian Economists Association, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.36880/c10.02179.

Full text
Abstract:
In the article the author studied the process of planning production capacities at textile enterprises. The author considers the production capacity as a reflection of the maximum possible release of the ready-to-sell products of the relevant nomenclature within the established timeframe while effectively using the production potential of the enterprise. This implies the full use of all economic resources based on the use of advanced technology, advanced forms and methods of organizing labor and production. An important task for enterprises in the use of production capacity is to plan production capacity. Since in the case of not matching the production capacity to the parameters of the market environment, the enterprise has the risk of losing its target market due to the expectation of manufacturing an order or the capture of a larger market share by competitors. Otherwise, excess capacity will cause problems in the formation of market demand, which will inevitably lead to loss of income due to excessive costs to maintain the production system in an optimal state, such as: inventory, depreciation, staff salaries. Founded that solving the problem of planning production capacity lays the foundation for ensuring rhythmicity. The concept of strategic capacity planning relies on achieving economies of scale and development curves, focusing the capacity and flexibility of production. At the end of the article has been visually presented the process of capacity planning and suggests the decision tree, balance models, breakeven analysis and sensitivity analysis as evaluation methods for solving the design problem of production capacity.

Abstract:
Cloud manufacturing is a novel service-oriented networked manufacturing paradigm for the manufacturing industry. Through aggregating distributed manufacturing resources from different enterprises and transforming them into services, cloud manufacturing is able to provide on-demand manufacturing services to customers. Scheduling, including resource scheduling and task scheduling, is a critical instrument for achieving on-demand service provisioning, and also an important research issue in cloud manufacturing. In the process of service scheduling in cloud manufacturing, the manufacturing services are firstly matched according to the service demander’s functional requirements and service availability to form the candidate service sets. And then the optimized service scheduling scheme is generated according to the service demander’s non-functional requirements. The individual requirements of service demanders are analyzed from aspects of functional and non-functional requirements in this paper. On this basis, the scheduling process for individual requirements in cloud manufacturing system is studied and a cloud manufacturing service scheduling method is proposed. This work can provide support and foundation for the related research of task planning and scheduling in cloud manufacturing system. Finally, a case study is given to verify the proposed service scheduling method.
