Abstract:

Abstract:

Pálfy Eszternek e folyóiratban olvasható tanulmánya meggyőzően érvel amellett, hogy a korábban mellékszereplőnek tekintett Naprádiné a szerelemkoncepció felől tekintve Kemény regényének egyik kulcsfigurája. E korreferátum egyetért Naprádiné kitüntetett pozíciójával, ám regénybeli szerepét, az olvasáshoz és a szerelemhez való viszonyát a rajongás (enthusiasmus) (Schwärmerei) XIX. fogalma felől interpretálja. A Platónnál még alapvetően pozitív értelemben előforduló rajongás (enthusiasmus) Luther értelmezése nyomán negatív felhangot kap. Ő főként az 1520-as, 1530-as évek millenarista protestáns mozgalmait nevezte rajongónak.

West, John Peter. "Dryden and enthusiasm." Thesis, University of Warwick, 2011. http://wrap.warwick.ac.uk/51566/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis interprets the work of John Dryden in the context of the cultural, political and religious controversy that surrounded the concept of "enthusiasm" in later seventeenth-century England. It argues that Dryden is a more "enthusiastic" writer than is commonly thought, both in terms of poetics and of epistemology. It examines the tensions inherent in this enthusiasm when it is placed in the context of contemporary anxieties surrounding religious dissent and the memories of mid-century radicalism. Chapter One explores how "fancy", commonly a cultural signifier for fanaticism, was important in the formulation of an idea of poetic enthusiasm in Dryden's early critical works. In seeking to represent things beyond nature, this model of enthusiasm was underpinned by a concern that marvellous fiction could be mistaken for truth. Chapter Two pursues these ideas into the period of Plot and Exclusion. Dryden responded to a changed political culture with a renewed prioritisation of judgement, but the chapter will show how he sought to retain some aspects of his "enthusiastic" style. Chapter Three discusses Dryden's use of the later seventeenth-century Pindaric ode, a form in which cultural debates about religious enthusiasm and poetic inspiration took place. Chapter Four investigates Dryden's understanding of providence in some of his late work and considers how the mysteries of the divine, that had previously been a source of literary inspiration, began to suggest suffering after the political losses of 1688. As well as positing a revised view of Dryden as an imaginative writer, then, this thesis suggests ways in which the relationship between politics and literature in the later seventeenth century was less oppositional and more a fluid process of contest for, and appropriation of, key ideas. It also outlines Dryden's place in a larger narrative of the development of poetic "enthusiasm" in the eighteenth century.

Hui, Allison Tanya. "Enthusiasts' travel : mobilities and practices." Thesis, Lancaster University, 2011. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.618331.

Abstract:
While it is widely accepted that people travel not for the sake of travel, but in order to do various things, the relationship between travel and everyday practices is not well understood. My research project investigates the underexplored and dynamic relationship between everyday practice and travel, focusing in particular upon how the multiple mobilities of people, objects, images and skills condition and constrain performances of practices. In this work, I incorporate and extend concepts from theories of practice (Schatzki, Bourdieu, Reckwitz, Shove), the new mobilities paradigm (Sheller and Urry), anthropology (Ingold) and time-geography (Hagerstrand). Drawing upon semi-structured qualitative interviews and participant observation of bird watching and patchwork quilting, as well as literature on leisure walking and Ashtanga yoga, I explore the interactions between situated performances of leisure and the circulation of the elements that-make up each practice, showing for instance how the objects of leisure change participants' networked travelling. In addition to offering compelling proof of how people do not independently choose, but are rather compelled to travel. this thesis demonstrates how travel is the collective product of people and practices. and confirms the importance of relational arid practice-specific understandings of travel. By theorizing travel as not only general movement through objective space, but also networked circulations of practice-specific elements, this research provides concepts and approaches that can be taken up in the future to re-frame the challenges of curbing unsustainable travel and widening participation in socially desirable practices. Andersson, David. "An Enthusiast’s Guide to SICs in Low Dimensions." Thesis, Stockholms universitet, Fysikum, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:su:diva-168921.

Abstract:
In this thesis for the degree of Master of Science from Stockholm University we explore the ideas of Symmetric Informationally Complete Positive Valued Measures (SIC-POVMs; commonly just SICs). This is an emerging concept in quantum information theory with ambitious claims, such as being a candidate for standard measurements [23] and perhaps being of importance to error correcting universal quantum computing [32]. While the definition of a SIC is exceedingly simple they have proven notoriously hard to find. This thesis explores new approaches to finding SICs. It is our ambition that this thesis shall provide the reader unfamiliar with SICs with a thorough introduction to the subject along with both the necessary quantum theory and group theory. We also hope to intrigue the reader already attuned to SICs by establishing a link between how close to a SIC a state is and how close to a MUS (Minimum Uncertainty State) it is. This is the main result of this thesis and we leave the reader with several open questions relating to this discovery to provoke further scrutiny of the matter. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first part provides the necessary background and theory; while the second part presents our results. There are also three appendices attached to this thesis where we delve into a discussion about computing power and also present some of the code used. Being appendices these are not essential to the thesis per se – they are rather supplied as a reference for the curious reader who might be interested in recreating some of our results.

Abstract:
This study explores the motivation of English undergraduates to study German. In a context focused approach the history of German language learning in England is reviewed first. The historical findings in combination with a review of L2 motivation research lead to the empirical work. Inspired by Ushioda’s (2009) person-in-context relational view of motivation I have conducted cross-sectional qualitative interview research with groups of British undergraduates who study German at two different English universities. The data collected gives an insight into language learning motivation in general and shows what is specific to Anglophone learners and to German language learning. Through qualitative data analysis relating to different language learning motivation models I test the relevance of the concepts of integrativeness, instrumental orientation and the L2 motivational self system, to the learning of a high status ‘niche’ language which is often a third language for Anglophone students.

Abstract:
Abstract With a growing number of outdoor enthusiasts becoming increasingly dependent on electronic devices such as GPS units, cellular telephones, and palm-sized computers, the need exists for a lightweight, field-maintainable electronic power source. Since batteries are neither lightweight nor environmentally friendly, the outdoor enthusiast’s proclaimed advocacy of “environmental awareness” furthers this necessity. As a result, there is a strong desire on the part of the outdoor community to have alternative methods for generating portable power. This paper describes the development of a device capable of producing up to 10 watts of electric power by converting thermal energy into electric energy. This is achieved by placing a bismuth-telluride thermoelectric module between a highly efficient heat exchanger and an integrated cold-water reservoir. In addition to thermal efficiency and eliminating the user’s dependency on batteries: size, weight, and system volume were also critical design specifications. Design efforts have resulted in a pocket-sized, multi-use device, which can be used as a power generator, water heater, or distillation unit. The unit has also been designed to work with equipment already possessed by most outdoor enthusiasts. This paper discusses the design challenges and novel solutions encountered during the successful development of the unit.

Abstract:
Like other bird and mammal species whose populations have been restored through conservation efforts, wild turkeys are treasured by many recreationists and outdoor enthusiasts. Wild turkeys have responded positively to wildlife habitat and population management. In some areas, however, their increased populations have led to increased damage to property and agricultural crops, and threats to human health and safety. Turkeys frequent agricultural fields, pastures, vineyards and orchards, as well as some urban and suburban neighborhoods. Because of this, they may cause damage or mistakenly be blamed for damage. Research has found that despite increases in turkey numbers and complaints, damage is often caused by other mammalian or bird species, not turkeys. In the instances where turkeys did cause damage, it was to specialty crops, vineyards, orchards, hay bales or silage pits during the winter. In cultured crops or gardens where wood chips, pine straw or other bedding materials (mulch) are placed around plants, wild turkeys sometimes scratch or dig up the material and damage plants when searching for food. Wild turkeys are a valuable game species, treasured by recreational hunters and wildlife enthusiasts.

Abstract:
At national and aggregate levels, COVID-19 vaccination across G7 countries appears successful. To date, 79.4% of the total population of G7 countries have received a first dose, 72.9% a second, and 45.4% a booster shot (28th April 2022 data). In France, 80.6% of the total population has had a first dose, 78.2 % have had two doses, and 55.4% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). In the UK, 79.3% of the total population has received one dose, 74.1% a second one, and 58.5% have received a booster. In Italy, 85.2% of the total population has had a first dose, 80.4% have had two doses, and 66.5% have had their booster jabs (28th of April 2022 data). These figures indicate enthusiasm across G7 countries for COVID-19 vaccines. Yet high overall vaccination rates at the national level, disguise significant in-country disparities. For example, by the end of 2021, less than 50% of residents of the Northern Districts of Marseille were vaccinated, compared with over 70% in wealthier neighbourhoods. In the Ealing borough of Northwest London, 70% of the eligible population has had a first dose – which is almost 10% percent below the national average (4th of April 2022 data). Disparities are also seen in other urban metropolises across the G7. This brief investigates these disparities through the lens of “vaccine (in)equity”, focusing on the role of local actors. It builds on ethnographic and qualitative research carried out in the Northern Districts of Marseille and ongoing research engagement around vaccine equity in Ealing (Northwest London), as well as qualitative research carried out in Italy among networks of healthcare providers, intercultural mediators, and civil society organizations that collaborated during the COVID-19 campaign in the Emilia Romagna region and in Rome. This brief is based on research conducted between October and December 2021 in Marseille and ongoing engagement in Ealing which started in May 2021. It identified how local governments, health actors, community groups and residents play key roles in shaping vaccine (in)equity. This brief was developed for SSHAP by Santiago Ripoll (IDS), Tabitha Hrynick (IDS), Ashley Ouvrier (LaSSA), Megan Schmidt-Sane (IDS), Federico Federici (UCL) and Elizabeth Storer (LSE). It was reviewed by Eloisa Franchi (Università degli Studi di Pavia) and Ellen Schwartz (Hackney Council Public Health). The research was funded through the British Academy COVID-19 Recovery: G7 Fund (COVG7210038). Research was based at the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Susssex, and the Laboratoire de Sciences Sociales Appliquées (LaSSA). The brief is the responsibility of SSHAP.
