Abstract:
The Enthymeme, which is a central concept in Aristotle’s rhetoric, is also one of his most debated notions. A majority of the interpretations proceed from Aristotle’s own words “the enthymeme is a kind of syllogism” and most of them understand the enthymeme as a reduced syllogism or a syllogism based on the plausible. In this article different views of the Aristotelian enthymeme are examined, and an alternative outlook inspired by Aristotle’s own examples, is put forward. This is a suggestion that takes into consideration the context dependence, the dialogical nature and the need for presence (in a Perelmanian sense), in human communication and construction of meaning. The enthymeme is here viewed as a discursive process in which the reasoning of the speaker connects with the listener’s structures of meaning. An important phenomenon in this process is the establishment of coherence

Abstract:
Zottoli argued that the enthymeme theory was a very useful tool to understand Chinese texts. To show this, he analyzed and examined the Baguwen (八股文). The enthymematic features of it are compable to enthymemes of signs or enthymemes of wide-ranging opinions. They are considered to be makers of contexts that are accepted and approved largely by the audience according to common sense. They are also very similar to loci communes of Cicero.

Abstract:
This paper argues that surface-level analysis of political argument fails to explain the effectiveness of ideological enthymemes, particularly within the context of presidential debates. This paper uses the first presidential debate of the 2012 election as a case study for the use of “Obamacare” as an ideological enthymeme. The choice of a terminological system limits and shapes the argumentative choices afforded the candidate. Presidential debates provide a unique context within which to examine the interaction of ideological constraints and argument due to their relatively committed and ideologically homogenous audiences.

Abstract:
Kent Wisti is a new phenomenon who is successful in social media with his satire drawings. With a softly approach Wisti is questioning the opinions and reactions to current events. The aim of the research is to examine ways and means Wisti uses to form opinions. Today it is difficult to debate about sensitive topics because of the fear of not being considered politically correct, a racist or tied to the opinions that we do not want to be associated with. By examining the topos used and how Wisti speaks about racism and immigration I can thereby discern how Wisti creates enthymem. Therefore I examine the question: How is enthymem created in Kent Wistis drawings? This, in turn, I examine by studying how different topos are used to create enthymem. The research is based on Maria Wolrath Söderbergs method for topos, where I stake on the concepts of points for discussion, bases for discussion and operations for discussion to thereby examine how enthymem are created. The results clearly show that Wisti leaves much implicitly requiring the reader to become a co-creator of enthymem and hence their own convictions. This demands that the readers are well informed of the topics and have similar thought patterns to Wisti in order to fully understand the message. Wisti argues against including prejudices and racism through flaws in various doxa. There are contradictions between what we say and what we do, or between which we want to be and who we are. Doxa is simply something that binds together our decisions and actions with our thinking and reasoning. If these elements do not match, a persons overall impression ruptures.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
While Pauline studies today are grappling with the question of the core of Paul's thought, the investigation of the apostle's social world is also gaining interest among scholars. The study of Paul's argumentation offers a fundamental contribution to both endeavours. Enthymemes, defined by the rhetorical tradition as the basic building blocks of deductive argumentation, constitute an important part of Paul's argumentation which until now has been relatively unexploited. Study of the manner in which Paul constructs enthymemes gives us insight into his thought world. The premisses that he uses as argumentative proofs can be viewed as a reflection of the common "social knowledge" of the Pauline milieu.
The object of this inquiry is to study Paul's use of enthymemes as a rhetorical and argumentative tool and to evaluate what this reveals about his thought, his teaching, and his social world. The study begins with a discussion of the problem of enthymeme definition, followed by a clarification of criteria for identifying enthymemes in texts. A method of analysis is proposed. The entire corpus of Paul's seven undisputed letters is then "combed" for enthymemes, one epistle at a time. Enthymemes are identified and analysed, and their argumentative premisses are catalogued thematically. This exercise permits a serious consideration of Paul's modes of argumentation, rhetorical aims and social world in the context of each epistle. Results from different epistles are compared as a means to consider, in general, Paul's rhetorical habits.
This thesis argues that enthymeme analysis is a necessary first step in Pauline exegesis. It is also argued that more attention needs to be given to enthymeme study in the research into Paul's social world. The question of how enthymeme study can inform the study of Paul's theology and core convictions is also discussed.

Abstract:
This thesis provides a formal treatment of the utilisation of enthymemes in dialogical settings, and thus contributes to the formalisation of a key argumentative practice ubiquitous in real world dialogues. The underlying argumentation formalism of our work is ASPIC+, a general framework for structured argumentation which is shown to capture existing systems for argumentation based reasoning. Due to ASPIC+’s lack of support for enthymemes, we modify the ASPIC+ framework so as to enable representation of a broad range of argumentative structures, including arguments and enthymemes. We formalise how an agent i can utilise its model of another agent j's beliefs and arguments, in order to construct enthymemes from its arguments to send to j, while attempting to ensure that j is capable of reconstructing the original arguments from their respective enthymemes. We then formally define the process of reconstructing the argument from which a received enthymeme was originally constructed, similarly using agents’ models of each others’ beliefs and arguments. We define mechanisms for constructing and maintaining an agent’s model of another agent’s beliefs and arguments. The mechanisms are based on agents’ dialogical exchanges, as well as their quantitatively measured like-mindedness. The latter harnesses the notion that agents in the environment are distributed in groups and communities that are formed on the basis of agents’ intrinsic and extrinsic properties. We then present a general framework for argumentation based dialogue. The framework formalises core elements that are common amongst existing dialogue systems while abstracting away from the details that restricts it to particular systems or specific dialogue types. To illustrate its generality, the framework is instantiated to capture existing dialogue systems, each for a different dialogue type. The framework is then instantiated to represent a system for a new dialogue type, called resolution. Resolution dialogues are designed to be easily embedded within other dialogues of potentially differing types, and enable their resolution dialogues can additionally capture and generalise one of the primary dialogical mechanisms in existing dialogue systems, and can formalise information-seeking and potentially inquiry dialogues. We then show that resolution dialogues can additionally capture and generalise one of the primary dialogical mechanisms in existing dialogue systems, and can formalise information-seeking and potentially inquiry dialogues.

Abstract:
Communication enables us to share our ideas, feelings, beliefs and opinions with others. Therefore it constitutes the very root of our civilization. However, in order for communication to be meaningful, it must initially be understood. To be understood, the message must be communicated in a language we know, with reasoning based on what we already understand (as knowledge). Definitions often function as such premises, and starting points, for our reasoning. Definitions can be explicit, but mostly appear as implicit argumentative perspectives, which is why this essay intends to investigate the argumentative nature of definitions. More specifically I have chosen to examine the definitions Amnesty International use in defense of their decision to advocate for the decriminalization of sex work more closely. The theoretical framework consists of rhetorical theories about argumentation. The results show how one, by analyzing definitions as argumentative perspectives, is able to alert problematic and questionable premises that went unnoticed in the overall examination of Amnesty Internationals argumentation.
