Abstract:
The relational database system has achieved widespread popularity; however, it is still very difficult for users, even those trained in the relational model, to formulate relational queries. The major cause of the difficulties is the fact that the user and the database system communicate using constructs that are not closely related to the user's world. This dissertation develops a new level of user-database interaction — the knowledge level (KL) interface — where the user and the database system exchange only knowledge of the domain. The data structure used in the database is fully hidden from the user. In this way, the query is very closely related to the user's world. Under the new KL approach, the database system is no longer seen as a store of data. It is set up as an agent to know the domain knowledge told to it by the user. The system will then provide the knowledge required by the user during retrievals. It will use elements of the entity-relationship model for communicating knowledge about the real world with the user. It is shown that the KL interface is in many ways better than the relational interface. Users of the KL interface need to know less and perform fewer data manipulation operations than users of the relational interface. The KL interface also achieves both physical and logical data independence, unlike the relational system which does not truly achieve logical data independence. This dissertation also proposes a new approach to understanding the meaning of completeness of a query language, breaking away from the traditional calculus-based measure of completeness. This new approach is then applied to the development of the knowledge level interface. The main contributions of this dissertation are the proposal and development of a knowledge level interface, the anaylsis to show that this interface is better than the relational interface, and the demonstration that such an interface is feasible even for large databases.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is to design a complete ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) data model by using Entity-Relationship diagram and the argumentation of this model in relation to ITIL Configuration and Asset Management federative approach. The thesis is build of two major parts, where the first one focuses on the theory of recommendations and best practices in the IT Governance processes, its relationship to ITIL and a high-level overview of ITIL history. Theoretical part ends with the brief description of tools and methods used in data modeling. It is followed by practical part in which the content is based on analyzing of ITIL publications in the same order as IT Service Management life cycle phases and designing of the logical data model. Each chapter discusses at its end the abiliity of designed model to cover the data requirements for particular ITSM lifecycle phase. In the very last chapter, all partial models are joined into one complete data model and shown relations are argumented.

Abstract:

Stress responsive genes play a key role in shaping the manner in which plants process and respond to environmental stress. Their gene products are linked to DNA transcription and its consequent translation into a response product. However, whilst these genes play a significant role in manufacturing responses to stressful stimuli, transcription factors coordinate access to these genes, specifically by accessing a gene&rsquo
s promoter region which houses transcription factor binding sites. Here transcriptional elements play a key role in mediating responses to environmental stress where each transcription factor binding site may constitute a potential response to a stress signal. Arabidopsis thaliana, a model organism, can be used to identify the mechanism of how transcription factors shape a plant&rsquo
s survival in a stressful environment. Whilst there are numerous plant stress research groups, globally there is a shortage of publicly available stress responsive gene databases. In addition a number of previous databases such as the Generation Challenge Programme&rsquo
s comparative plant stressresponsive gene catalogue, Stresslink and DRASTIC have become defunct whilst others have stagnated. There is currently a single Arabidopsis thaliana stress response database called STIFDB which was launched in 2008 and only covers abiotic stresses as handled by major abiotic stress responsive transcription factor families. Its data was sourced from microarray expression databases, contains numerous omissions as well as numerous erroneous entries and has not been updated since its inception. The Dragon Arabidopsis Stress Transcription Factor database (DASTF) was developed in response to the current lack of stress response gene resources. A total of 2333 entries were downloaded from SWISSPROT, manually curated and imported into DASTF. The entries represent 424 transcription factor families. Each entry has a corresponding SWISSPROT, ENTREZ GENBANK and TAIR accession number. The 5&rsquo
untranslated regions (UTR) of 417 families were scanned against TRANSFAC&rsquo
s binding site catalogue to identify binding sites. The relational database consists of two tables, namely a transcription factor table and a transcription factor family table called DASTF_TF and TF_Family respectively. Using a two-tier client-server architecture, a webserver was built with PHP, APACHE and MYSQL and the data was loaded into these tables with a PYTHON script. The DASTF database contains 60 entries which correspond to biotic stress and 167 correspond to abiotic stress while 2106 respond to biotic and/or abiotic stress. Users can search the database using text, family, chromosome and stress type search options. Online tools have been integrated into the DASTF
database, such as HMMER, CLUSTALW, BLAST and HYDROCALCULATOR. User&rsquo
s can upload sequences to identify which transcription factor family their sequences belong to by using HMMER. The website can be accessed at http://apps.sanbi.ac.za/dastf/ and two updates per year are envisaged.

Abstract:
This diploma thesis covers the design and implementation of changes and extension modules of a chosen information system, used in JUDr. Ján Bartánus's attorney office in Ružomberok. The system, implemented as a web application based on the Symfony framework, is dedicated to the simplyfing, monitoring and organization of the work processes in a generic attorney office located in the Slovak Republic. For the purposes of a correct design, the thesis contains an analysis of the current state of the given attorney office, the environment in which it operates, its information system and existing solutions. Tools that were used to conduct the analysis were the SLEPT method, Porter's five forces, model 7S and SWOT matrix. Based on the results of the analyses, a change of the system has been designed, which entails an upgrade of the system, its user interface, integration of the register of companies of Slovak Republic and an extension module intended for the financial valuation of work performed by an attorney. The application has been developed utilizing the PHP and JavaScript programming language. The valuation module integrates the Google Maps API. The stability and speed of the system were tested by functional tests and profiling of the duration of HTTP requests. The main contribution of this thesis is the design and implementation of an extension of the information system, which can be used in any arbitrary attorney office situated in the Slovak Republic, and its practical application in the chosen company. This thesis builds on a previous thesis dedicated to the design and implementation of the information system, which is being extended in this diploma thesis.

Abstract:
Russia’s economy is growing at a very fast pace and it has an enormous potential for the international enterprises. Although Russian market has a huge potential for international enterprises but at the same time it has challenges and pitfalls that need to be addressed before getting into the Russian market. Often international enterprises fail in Russia due to the reason that they are not fully aware of the challenges and difficulties of the market. Entry mode of SMEs is affected by the challenges and pitfalls of the Russian market and network relationships play vital role for the success of SMEs in the Russian market.   The aim of the thesis is to identify the main challenges of the Russian market that international SMEs can face while entering the Russian market and also how SMEs can choose a specific entry mode while taking into consideration the challenges that Russian market poses to international enterprises. Thesis also deals with the importance of network relationships and how SMEs can take benefit of the network relationships in order to serve the market better.   Empirical data has been collected by conducting interviews with representatives of different Swedish SMEs that are operating already in the Russian market. After the empirical analysis, the challenges of the Russian market are stated that were experienced by the interviewees. Common mode of Swedish SMEs based on the interviews is stated and it is also stated that how Swedish SMEs establish and maintain relationships with Russian counter parts.   This thesis will be helpful for the SMEs that are going to enter in Russia; to identify the key successful factors of the internationalization in Russia through a theoretical background, and cases of Swedish SMEs competing there. Moreover, the present study could also be of great interest for the Russian authorities that try to improve the business environment in Russia as it shows the perceptions of international enterprises on challenges of the Russian market.

Abstract:
To offer a deeper understanding of how Peruvian firms internationalize this paper aims to throw in an acknowledged theoretical gap in international business research by giving a contribution towards the internationalization of Multilatinas based on a network perspective. The purpose is to investigate what drives Peruvian Multilatina's to internationalize, what market they select, how they enter these markets, and how different network relationships can influence their internationalization. Research question: What does the internationalization process look like for a Peruvian Multilatina? Method: Includes a qualitative research method with the use of semi-structured interviews. A multiple case study was utilized to gain comparative insights into how Peruvian Multilatinas internationalized through their networks relationships. For the analysis, the theoretical framework consisted of: internationalization drivers, market selection, choice entry mode, and importance of networks. Conclusions: The results conclude that Multilatinas do not follow a unique pattern of internationalization, but follow an accelerated expansion strategy based on the context of their political and economic environment. The Multilatinas studied started off by exporting to markets that had similar characteristics to their own. Once they had adequate experience and knowledge of operating there, they followed up with contractual and investment entry modes. The Multilatinas relied on different network relationships in order to internationalize. The most important being the business relationship and institutional relationship in order to gain insidership.

Abstract:
Validation and verification in machine learning is an open problem which becomes increasingly important as its applications becomes more critical. Amongst the applications are autonomous vehicles and medical diagnostics. These systems all needs to be validated before being put into use or else the consequences might be fatal. This master’s thesis focuses on improving both learning and validating machine learning models in cases where data can either be generated or collected based on a chosen position. This can for example be taking and labeling photos at the position or running some simulation which generates data from the chosen positions. The approach is twofold. The first part concerns modeling the relationship between any fixed-size set of positions and some real valued performance measure. The second part involves calculating such a performance measure by estimating the performance over a region of positions. The result is two different algorithms, both variations of Bayesian optimization. The first algorithm models the relationship between a set of points and some performance measure while also optimizing the function and thus finding the set of points which yields the highest performance. The second algorithm uses Bayesian optimization to approximate the integral of performance over the region of interest. The resulting algorithms are validated in two different simulated environments. The resulting algorithms are applicable not only to machine learning but can also be used to optimize any function which takes a set of positions and returns a value, but are more suitable when the function is expensive to evaluate.

Abstract:
The development of digital solutions has changed the way consumers complete purchases today. New distribution channels through internet and mobile applications have come to challenge the business of traditional retailers. Thus, retailers must find new ways of keeping customers loyal to the store. One way of retaining customers is to provide a more prominent customer experience. This study focuses on technological solutions for the food retail industry that enables the creation of this experience, more specifically self-scanning applications provided by the Swedish company Datema. The Swedish market, in which Datema acts, is among the most technologically advanced in the world regarding self-scanning solutions and has begun to reach a maturity phase. This, along with desires to expand the marketplace, has created an attraction to larger foreign markets such as North America. Similarities in business culture and a strong buying power have led to a certain interest in the Northeastern part of America. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is to investigate the need for self-scanning solutions in this specific area and to provide recommendations for how the market could be targeted. To create an overview of the market structure the consumer market has been studied through an in-depth literature review of the latest market investigations. Furthermore, the technological level of Northeastern supermarket chains was investigated through market observations and interviews with store managers in Boston, Massachusetts. To create the holistic view of the market, interviews with experts in the US retail market and with US IT-vendors were conducted. Additionally, interviews with management consultants and experts in market entries have contributed to answering the question of how the market should be entered. Finally, in order to provide conclusions and recommendations, the results have been analyzed with relevant literature and theories within marketing, change management and entry mode management. The findings in this master thesis indicates that there is a need for technological solutions that enhance the customer experience in the Northeastern American food retail market. Furthermore, the technological level of the existing supermarket chains in Boston is considered low and that the level and acceptance varies with the store concept. The previous resistance towards implementation of new technological solutions in the stores was found to mainly depend on a low knowledge, low trust in the consumers and fear of losing customer interaction.Datema is recommended to address the middle and high-end supermarket chains with a follower approach. Further recommendations include that the market should be entered through a joint venture with a local partner.

Abstract:
This thesis takes a cross-regional analytical approach of three distinct economic areas to evaluate productive knowledge and diplomacy in the context of regional integration alongside determinants of business creation. From the angle of European integration, we introduce a new synthetic control methodology to evaluate the impact of EU accession on the economic complexity index of new CEE member states its results indicating that accession to the EU acted as a catalyst for the productive knowledge of countries with low levels of complexity before accession, allowing a higher rate of development in the sophistication of their product export space. Expanding our analysis to include all European countries and North African states, we proceed in a second stage to analyse institutional and logistical infrastructure determinants of trade by extending the traditional Gravity model to incorporate elements of diplomacy (including the presence of embassies and ambassadors). Our results demonstrate the benefits of soft and hard infrastructure as well as diplomatic activity on the bilateral trade fixed effect CEE and North African countries, validating their importance of these variables as powerful drivers of regional integration. In a final part, we turn our analysis to the Russian Federation as a regional geography with a panel regression analysis of the determinants of firm entry and exit. The empirical evaluation concludes that institutional failures and the politico-economic environment exhibit statistically significant and economically meaningful effects both on the creation and destruction of Russian firms, with a robust estimate of the world oil price (irrespective of the difference in target regions) suggesting a possible high exposure of each Russian region to a global crisis

In recent years there has been a growing interest in explicit introduction of time modeling in a conceptual schema. This comes about as a result of a realizing that the development of large information systems is becoming increasingly more difficult as user requirements become broader and more sophisticated. Arguably the most critical activities in the development of a large data-intensive information system are requirements capture and specification. The explicit representation of time in a conceptual model plays a major role in capturing requirements. This paper uses the extended Entity-Relationship-Time Model (EERT) to enhance the specification of information in the real world. The EERT model uses the entity-relationship approach as its basic structure in order to preserve the well-known advantages. namely, graphical display, increased readability, and wide acceptance by practitionres, In addition, using ER methodology can keep complete requirement specifications in static model for designing databases. Adding time factor can present the dynamic aspect of databases. Finally, by adding a two-dimension time structure, we can minimize the changes of the architecture of database and extend the maximum functional requirements in today's relational databases.

Abstract-based life-cycle model was proposed because of the defect of the traditional software development life- cycle, which is usually called the waterfall model. Abstract model emphasizes automatic code construction and maintaining specification. It incorporates the evaluation and validation process into the development/evolution process in order to reduce the software development crisis. Using such model, the user can design system at various stages concurrently. In other words, a part of system requirements can be generated into prototypes and the others can be designed continuously at the design stage at the same time. By the entity-relationship model (ER Model), which is used as the conceptual design of database and by the evolution of abstract-based life-cycle model, We try to develop a system that can be used to design relational database. The system can produce relational database language, structured query language (SQL), and send SQL codes to relational database management system (RDBMS) in order to execute designer''s requirements. The user or designer can design elementary relational database and simple query just only to understand the diagram of ER Model, the specification of system interfaces, and the basic system operations.

Entity-Relationship model and Microsoft® ASP.NET technology are frequently used in developing web relational database applications. Without using any commercial Computer-Aided Software Engineering(CASE)tools, however, programmers tend to develop ASP.NET applications in a traditional way. That is, draw an E-R model on paper at first, and then use that model to manually create the desired database and tables, and finally start to develop programs manipulating data in the built database. This process appears to be time-consuming and involves a lot of manual works. In this study, we use Visual C#®, as a programming language, to develop an E-R model designer and an ASP.NET database application generator. The designer, as a simple CASE tool, provides users a visual interface for designing an E-R model. More importantly, it enables users to customize and generate the pre-defined XML parameters required in the ASP.NET database application generator. And the application generator, in turn, takes the XML parameters to generate the specified relational database and ASP.NET programs. By applying the designer and the generator with built-in functionalities of Role-Based Access Control(RBAC), developers can quickly get a handy web database application for further usage.

Data mining can raise potential business value for managers and it drives lots of research for automatic analysis. Since E-R model based relational databases have been widely used in firms, schools, and governments, it motivates us to develop a data mining algorithm to discover interesting patterns on multi-relational data. Hence, we define relational itemset as inter-itemset and propose three inter-itemsets mining algorithms which can search frequent relational itemsets without propositonalization. The proposed algorithms can avoid deviation problem, extreme horizontal and vertical data blow-up, and loss of important semantic entity-relationship information. A new support count measure which calculates number of key pairs in relationship is developed to express the actual relationship among entity tables and produce interesting patterns. The proposed algorithms can find various attributes in entity with cardinality of 1:1, 1: N, or M: N. For eliminating redundancies, the closure concept is introduced to find closed inter-itemsets. In order to search inter-itemsets on an E-R model based database, the rooted E-R tree is proposed to avoid cyclic paths in a graph scheme. In the experiments, three approaches are evaluated and compared with each others that running on a practical financial database. The E-R diagram of the database is transformed to five semantic connection paths. We also show inter-itemsets with different support values. Finally, the inter-itemsets of experimental results are used to generate association rules.

Machine learning algorithms can produce high-value analysis and prediction for decision making from a mass of data without the help of humanity. Thus, the machine learning technique becomes one of most popular data analytics. Regarding the trend of big data, cloud computing has the ability of parallel processing and high scalability. More and more companies try to migrate from the traditional SQL database into the new NoSQL database. However, most engineers may not be familiar with the NoSQL database like the SQL database. Thus, this paper presents an SQL-to-NoSQL schema transformation based on the entity-relationship model (ER model) for machine learning. First, the proposed approach analyzes the schema of one SQL database based on the corresponding ER model. Then, our approach can produce the schema of the NoSQL database by merging related tables according to the proposed rules. That is, any SQL engineers can transfer the SQL database into the NoSQL database even if they need not design the schema of the NoSQL database by themselves.

The method for generating potential Key Performance Index (KPI) by studying the characteristic of ERP database, such as Attribute of Entity in Entity-Relationship Model, is feasible, which is proven from previous research. In order to reflect the current operating status of enterprise, KPIs have to present in different managerial aspects. Therefore, user needs to know what dimension can be used to present the new-found KPIs under the existing data of database. As mentioned above, proposing an automatic method to generate the potential KPIs with its dimensional model is the motivation of this research. In previous research of automatic KPIs generating method, it compares the similarity of description of Entity-attribute in ERP database with the operand of existing KPI in DW system by text mining technique to make the linking of Entity-attribute and operand. And it uses the predefined formula structure to compose the KPI candidates. In the past method, it ignores the situation of affix difference which causes the error on counting term frequency. Hence, this research applies the stemming algorithm to improve the accuracy on the TFIDF weight calculation. Besides, because the past method defends entire entity as the compared unit, it causes too much useless KPI candidates and its definition is not reasonable. This research also corrects this problem on the definition of compared unit, and therefore reduces the quantity of new-found KPIs to the number that can be filtered by human. KPI candidates are composed by the Entity-attribute in database. The Entity-attributes used in those candidates are not always chosen from the same Entity. In the research of constructing Dimensional model form the data model of source system, it seldom discusses the problem which data is coming from different entities when defining the Fact table. This research uses the shortest path algorithm to find which path connects the used entities of KPI candidates. And the entities on the path are joined to construct the fact table of Dimensional model. This method ensures the minimum number of joining operation. Then we use the joined entity and Modified ER diagram to construct the Dimensional model of KPI candidates by the existing algorithm for dimension development

Abstract:
In text mining, being able to recognize and extract named entities, e.g. Locations, Persons, Organizations, is very useful in many applications. This is usually referred to named entity recognition (NER). This thesis presents a cascaded framework for extracting named entities from text documents. We automatically derive features on a set of documents from different feature templates. To avoid high computational cost incurred by a single-phase approach, we divide the named entity extraction task into a segmentation task and a classification task, reducing the computational cost by an order of magnitude.
To handle cascaded errors that often occur in a sequence of tasks, we investigate and develop three models: maximum-entropy margin-based (MEMB) model, isomeric conditional random field (ICRF) model, and online cascaded reranking (OCR) model. MEMB model makes use of the concept of margin in maximizing log-likelihood. Parameters are trained in a way that they can maximize the "margin" between the decision boundary and the nearest training data points. ICRF model makes use of the concept of joint training. Instead of training each model independently, we design the segmentation and classification models in a way that they can be efficiently trained together under a soft constraint. OCR model is developed by using an online training method to maximize a margin without considering any probability measures, which greatly reduces the training time. It reranks all of the possible outputs from a previous stage based on a total output score. The best output with the highest total score is the final output.
We report experimental evaluations on the GENIA Corpus available from the BioNLP/NLPBA (2004) shared task and the Reuters Corpus available from the CoNLL-2003 shared tasks, which demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance achieved by the proposed models.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to design a database of resources for rational therapy. An investigation of the current health situation and reorientation towards primary health care (PHC) in South Africa evidenced the need for a database of resources which would meet the demand for rational therapy information made on the Helderberg College Library by various user groups as well as make a contribution to the national health information infrastructure. Rational therapy is viewed as an approach within PHC that is rational, common-sense, wholistic and credible, focusing on the prevention and maintenance of health. A model of the steps in database design was developed. A user study identified users' requirements for design and the conceptual schema was developed. The entities, attributes, relationships and policies were presented and graphically summarised in an Entity-Relationship (E-R) diagram. The conceptual schema is the blueprint for further design and implementation of the database.

This study attempts to fill the gap in the literature by providing an integrative research framework through extensive literature review to identify the general environment, industrial environment, firm’s characteristics and core competence and to examine the relationships among these determinants, entry modes choice, competitive strategies choice and the foreign market performance of the firms. The research develops nine hypotheses based on transaction costs theory and resource-based perspective and then to examine the hypotheses by empirical method. The population is the top 5000 firms of Taiwan listed in the China Credit Information Service Incorporation. A random stratified sampling method was used. 500 questionnaires were mailed, and in 107 responses were received 3 were incomplete. The remaining 104 valid questionnaires represent a useable response rate of 20.8%. The major finding of the research includes: 1. The more environment uncertainty of economics, regulations and suppliers, firms more likely adopt high control level entry mode. 2. Firms with greater size, stronger R&D core competence, the more likely adopt high control level entry mode. 3. Firms with stronger manufacture core competence, the more likely adopt low control level entry mode. 4. Firms with greater size, stronger internationalized motive and stronger marketing core competence, the more likely adopt leadership market competitive strategy. 5. The adoption of entry mode has no impact on foreign performance. 6. Firms that adapt leadership strategy are better on foreign performance. 7. Firms that adapt leadership strategy, while adopting high control level entry mode will get better foreign market performance than adopting low control level entry mode. 8. Firms that adapt follower strategy, while adopting low control level entry mode will get better foreign market performance than adopting high control level entry mode.

After Taiwan’s accession to the World Trade Organization as a full-member country on January 1, 2002, it is widely recognized that the entry is beneficial to Taiwan’s service industry in its efforts to tap international market. Meanwhile, more and more foreign service firms will also come to Taiwan to seek business opportunities. According to the rules of GATS, after accession a member of WTO can provide service in its own country for any other member country and its consumers. The member can also set up a business foothold in any other member country to provide service. At the same time, all the service suppliers are treated on an equal basis in competition, no matter what nationality they belong to. The selection of the international market entry mode is the critical factor of success or failure in internationalization, because it is a long-term overall strategy pertinent to international marketing and a variety of the related problems. The characteristics of service industry, such as intangibility, heterogeneity, simultaneity, and perishability, are obviously different from those of other industries. It is worthwhile to study the influence of the characteristics of the service industry on the entry mode of international market. Thus, this research has categorized the service industry into three types of service firms─based on the features of the service industry, and then has made an in-depth study of the relationship between the motive of their internationalization and the entry mode of international market in order to provide a framework for service firms which want to tap the international market. From the viewpoint of the service firms’ internationalization motive, this research explores what the intervention of other different types of service companies affect the entry mode of international market. Therefore, this research consists of two hypotheses : (1) motives of internationalization and the entry mode of foreign market; (2) the influence of the moderation of various service firms on the entry mode of foreign market. With exploratory factor analysis, we have extracted four factors —market development, the pursuit of efficiency, competition drive, and network connection─from thirteen chosen internationalization motives. And then we proceed with discriminant analysis using the four major factors and three entry modes of international market including high-control mode, medium-control mode and low-control mode. After analysis this study found that the market development and the pursuit of efficiency are consistent with the prediction of this research. As a result, many conditions demonstrate that the research is conducive to the service firms in Taiwan.

The focus of this research is on the entry strategies in firms’ internationalized course by the method of case study. Is the theory proposed by scholars in advanced country suitable for the firms in Taiwan? By studying the case of Natural Beauty chain-store system, which belongs to high service invisibility and customer interaction under the classification of Vandermerew & Chadwick (1992), this research are trying to figure out the answer. The core competence and characteristics of Natural Beauty were first inspected, and then study the growth strategies and influence of entry mode. In addition, this research shows that entry mode, which is a kind of institutional arrangement, will differ in each growth-stage of firms. So, the entry modes discussion of Natural Beauty was divided into three stages, including the following: 1. Go to the mainland to make the investment at the beginning of 1992. 2. Established the joint-venture company in 2000. 3. Listed in Hong Kong in 2003. These modes will be discussed under the foundations of related theories to find a suitable way for firms in each kind of situation. According to the case study, this research concluded that core competence and characteristics of firms could make the influence to firms’ growth strategies and entry modes by the following ways: 1. Branding by itself. 2. Expanding chain store fast. 3. Highly integration. 4. Internationalization experience. 5. Organizational memory and learning. Besides, four propositions can be made after the study mentioned above: Proposition one: As firms in home country’s core competence can apply the national market environments entered to, the firms will take higher control on their entry mode. Proposition two: When internationalized and experienced, but is not familiar with the national market, tends to adopt external growth strategies. Proposition three:When asoptting external growth strategies, the association of dealers will come to the possession of new core competency . Proposition four: When adoptting strengthened external strategies of growing up in the manufacturer, the manufacturer will take and highly control access mode. Proposition four:When external growth strategies are adopttde, the charateristice of alliance chain will change.

Abstract Because the market capability of the European market after economy integrated is very great, and the development trend of Taiwanese industry is toward high-tech industry. It''s important to understand the situation and the operation performances of Taiwanese high-tech companies that have invested in European market over three years. There are two main purposes of this research. The first one is to find out the factors that influence Taiwanese high-tech companies to choose the international entry mode for investing in European Market. The second one is to clarify the relationship between international entry mode and the operation performances. Empirical data were collected using a mail questionnaire, which was completed by managers in 65 Taiwanese high-tech companies. There were 45 firms responded the questionnaire. Out of the 45 firms, 3 were excluded since they contained large numbers of missing values, resulting in a final sample of 42 firms. And the response rate was 64.6%. There are three main findings in this research. First, the Ownership-Specific advantages, Investment Risk, Contract Risk, and Networking Linkage would influence Taiwanese high-tech companies to choice the international entry mode for investing in European market. Second, the Ownership-Specific advantages and Contract Risk were the key factors in deciding either the high degree of control or low degree of control. The Investment Risk and Networking Linkage were the key factors in deciding either the high degree of control or middle degree of control. Third, the international entry mode will have significally impact on the profits of Taiwanese high-tech companies that have invested in European market over three years.

In 2009, Taiwan government disclosed that 75% of foreign investment cases are in China. Governments on both sides of Taiwan Strait currently are struggling on the Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA) to stabilize the trading relationship and to release the political tension. Under the current uncertain situation, companies to invest in China are so anxious for their entry modes to achieve their goals. This research studies the decision-making model for companies in selecting entry modes that integrated four major theoretical perspectives of international business: institutional environment, network relationship, resourced characteristic, and transaction cost. We designed a questionnaire with 55 questions. We employed software package of Structural Equation Modeling to analysis the collected data. Eight significant relationships between the decision variables are indentified. Then, we constructed a decision tree for Analytic Hierarchy Process to evaluate the relative importance of those the decision-making variables. The result showed that the variables of the four perspectives would have directly influence on the decision-making. Furthermore, causal relationships with latent variable, institutional environment would have directly influenced on the network relationship and transaction cost. Institutional environment has indirectly influence on the resource characteristics through network relationship. In addition, network relationship has directly influence on resource characteristics and transaction cost. Institutional environment uncertainty is the most critical variable than the others.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE CHARACTERISTICS OF CORE RESOURCES AND ENTRY MODES AS SEEN FROM THE RESOURCE-BASED THEORY─THE ELECTRONIC TUBE AND SEMICODUTOR FIRMS OF TAIWAN AS AN EXAMPLEAdvisor: Prof. Hsien-che LeeStudent: Tzu-fang TaiTATUNG INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGYGRADUATE SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENTMASTER THESISJUNE 1997 ABSTRACT During the past decade, following the trend of internationalization, firms in the private sector in Taiwan have adopted more entry modes, instead of only focusing on export orientation. Many authors have discussed the topic on Taiwanese R.O.C. firms'''' entry modes from different angels. During the recent years, although RBV has emerged, there are a few empirical researches discussing the entry mode from this perspective. As a result, this study would like to discuss why or how the firms on Taiwan can choose some types of entry modes. This study focuses on the electronic tube and semiconductor firms in the high-tech industries, with special emphasis on IC. This study applies the Standard Classification of Industries of R.O.C. and chooses 3171 code, which includes magnetron, plasma, electronic tubes, image tubes, vacuum tubes, CRT, LCD, diode, thyristors, transistors, wafers, IC, photo conductors, solar cells, and light emitting diode as the target population. The subject of this study is limited to firms with international operations in the last years. This study uses One-way MANOVA to verify whether not all means of core resources are equivalent in characteristics of core resources, uses factor analysis to summarize and reduce the dimensions of characteristics of core resources, uses cluster and discriminant analysis to group samples, and uses Chi-square independent tests to observe whether a firm''''s entry mode will be contingent on its core resource, whether a firm''''s entry mode will be contingent on the characteristics of its core resource, and as for capabilities, whether a firm''''s entry mode will be contingent on the characteristics of its core resource. The following observations are based on this study: 1. Capabilities are more important than assets. The relative importance of the core resource of the individual firm is ''''doing,'''' ''''intangible,'''' and ''''people dependent.'''' R.O.C. high tech firms rely on manufacturing capabilities and innovation and R&D capability. 2. There is an overall significant difference in core resources for characteristics of core resources. This significant difference results from nontradeable nature between tangible assets and intangible assets and between tangible assets and capabilities. between tangible assets and 3. Entry modes of the firms are independent of their core resources and of the characteristic patterns of these resources. Hence, the related hypotheses in this study are not supported. The reasons of the results are that high tech firms need high skill workers and their capabilities and the industrial clusters are highly tacit and highly imperfect transferable. Consequently, the firm opts for export modes. Besides, in its present development, Taiwan''''s semiconductor industry still remains at the growth stage and has not entered the maturing stage; therefore, most of the firms focus mainly on export modes.
