Full textNearly twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, many walls continue to divide countries and their populations, while others are being built and strengthened, why? The answer to this question calls for the definition of the nature of these walls: Firstly, the walls are erected in order to separate communities (in Northern Ireland, in the occupied Palestinian territories, in Iraq). The walls also define boundaries between two worlds (the wall between the United States of walls also appears as the extension and the consequence of imperfect peace treaties (wall separating Greek and Turkish Cypriots, the one aiming to divide the two Koreas). It can also be analysed as the paradoxical result of the globalization that is said however to open… The list is not exhaustive. How do these walls fit in with the international law? Insofar as these walls imply spatial closure, thus exclusion, do they not hinder the liberty of movement of goods and people, established by the international conventions? As they contribute to demographic and geographic changes, or even topographical changes of occupied areas (Iraq, Palestine), do these walls not violate the right of people to self-determination affirmed by the resolutions of the United Nations? Are they not in the limit a theatrical demonstration of sovereignty in decline? These questions define the content and scope of our problem

Full textThis PhD thesis in Anthropology offers an ethnography of the so called ‘vandal’ and ‘half legal’ graffiti practices in urban areas. It first highlightes the forms of markings, that is, the medium and production through which graphiti writers publicly materialize their presence. It then focuses on the wide range of strategies writers deploy in their practices, from protection to infiltration. This study also aims to interrogate the relationship between ‘painters’ and urban space and time, on the basis of their modus operandi. In an attempt to account for these objects, this study adopts a comparative approach to fieldwork, in this case mainly Nice (French Riviera, France) and the province of Granada (Andalousia, Spain) which casts analytical light not only on the impact of the cultural context oin writers’choices and practices, but also on the political character of a practice that is rarely considered and verbalised as such

Full textThis PhD thesis aims to understand and analyse the heat exchanges that occur between a building and its environment in the presence of intensive vegetated walls. In this manuscript, a numerical and experimental approach to evaluate the thermal impact of green walls is presented. A platform composed of three identical prototypes (3 thermal mini-laboratories) under real weather conditions has been designed and instrumented. As a first step, two screens permitting a rapid and gradual variation of coverage rate from 10 to 100% were added to the prototypes. Thus, several series of measurements were performed and significant reductions in temperature and heat flow were recorded and interpreted. The primary objective of this experimental approach was to implement an artificial shading and thus controlled. A first model was developed based on the writing of heat exchanges energy balance equations between the wall with variable coverage rate and its climatic environment. This model confronted to the experimental results allowed the validation of the theoreticalapproaches at the level of radiative and convective heat transfer. Secondly, the first model that was developed in this work has been adapted to the case of a "real" occultation by vegetation (Ivy or Virginia creeper) then validated experimentally. It was finally implemented in a dynamic thermal simulation code (TRNSYS), and thus the thermal impact of green walls were evaluated at the real scale of a building. Simulation results in a temperate climate show that the presence of evergreen plants has a negative impact on winter energy demand. Conversely, in summer, the results show that green walls have an interest in limiting overheating. Their presence significantly reduces energy consumption needed to cool the building and improves the indoor thermal comfort

Full textResistance to antibiotics is increasingly frequent and therapy for patients infected by multi-resistant strains is more and more complicated and delicate, nay sometimes inefficient. Therefore, there is an urgent need for novel antibiotics to stave off the resurgent threat of bacterial epidemics. The relatively well-known mechanism of bacterial cell wall formation remains a pathway of prime interest in the search for therapeutic targets. Strikingly, recent studies have suggested that the biosynthesis of its main component, peptidoglycan, would involve macromolecular protein-protein complexes. Particularly, Mur ligases were suggested to form a multipartite complex which would recruit transglycosidase MurG and bacterial actin homolog MreB as well. Interestingly, these enzymes are targetted by none of the antibiotics in clinical use.The work carried out during this PhD showed by surface plasmon resonance and dot blot techniques that MurD, MurE, and MurF all recognize MurG and MreB, but not each other, whilst the two latter proteins interact. A crystallogenesis screening allowed to determine the crystallogenic fingerprints of single proteins and potential complexes, aiming for the crystal structure of one of the Mur complexes. Thanks to this screening, the structures of MurD, MurE, MurF were solved, suggesting that the conformational flexibility of their C-terminal domain might be involved in complex formation and stability. In addition, two data sets which could correspond to MreB-MurE and MreB-MurF complexes are still beeing processed. These results mark a further step in the characterization of the cytoplasmic peptidoglycan machinery, opening up towards novel therapeutic targets which would impair the integrity of the macromolecular complex

Full textIn the 21st century our image of a globalized world seems a priori paradoxical to the heavy increase in barriers designed to create or maintain divisions. We will focus on the artistic interpretation resulting from this paradox in the context of geopolitics, history and social situation. How and why the Wall should make think the artists? In a first step, historical development broadly reports the features and contexts of our phenomenal object. Then, effective phenomenology mainly refers to the Berlin Wall; this for an eventual metaphor to the two others studied objects-walls: the one located in Israel and Palestine, the other located between Mexico and the United States. Understanding of the Real is qualified by the sovereignty of States, understanding of the Symbolic via territory and cultural identity, and the realm of the Imaginary by the relationship with others and with oneself. The confrontation to the border (limologie) related to the strategy of the wall (teichos), would reveal an imbalance of principles of universality. Eventually, globalization as an exchange of interests is the one that would promote the existence of the object-wall; and a hyperreal perception of the object would be more the result from artists foreign to the phenomenon

The cities as they grow, has been closed between new walls, leading to worsening of issues the streets and occupation of urban space, the privatization of public spaces, the neighborhood relationship mandatory, the allusion of greater security and status. With this, the public spaces of the contemporary city are marked by selective appropriation and differentiated spaces that should be accessible to everyone. The gated alters the relationship between public and private from the privatization of public spaces. In the southern city of João Pessoa, only in the neighborhood of the Sun Portal, has today closed with seven condominiums, each with its large leisure areas. How cities can generate a variety of uses with an extension of breakaway walls for those who owe more purchasing power? The objective of this research is to analyze the areas of collective use of closed condominiums: Cabo Branco Residence Prive, Puerta del Sol and Orchid Grove, the morphology and sociospatial organization, noting planning rules, forms, uses and user behaviors . The methodology of this research is structured using as reference base: Lynch (1997), Kohlsdorf (2005) and Gehl (2006). Despite the formal and functional similarities visible in these collective spaces, there are fundamental differences in the spatial practices of its users. Know them in order to understand the dynamics and performance of these spaces and the social logic of segregation and production part of contemporary culture.

Full textThis research explores, in Eastern European countries contemporary literature, some possibilities of trauma fictionalization when you live in an area restrained by an authoritarian state. During the Cold War, the inhabitants of countries aligned with the Socialist Soviet regime suffered with general restrictions such as the limitation of freedom of movement, the government control of the economy and the food shortages, but also suffered with a constant threat: the possibility of a nuclear war happened. Furthermore, citizens who were denounced as enemies of the state passed to be persecuted by the political police, which manipulated them through surveillance, physical violence and emotional instability. The repression atmosphere, the fear and the violence were components of a disturbing reality that created conditions for a cumulative trauma existence. The aim of this paper is to check how the traumatic experience of this time and the trauma resistance strategies are represented in literature written after the end of communist dictatorship. For this purpose, three works were selected: Am kürzeren Ende der Sonnenallee, by Thomas Brussig; A fehér király, by György Dragoman; and Heute wär ich mir lieber nicht begegnet, by Herta Müller. The works were analyzed in the light of theorists such as Theodor W. Adorno, Michel de Certeau, Gaston Bachelard, Linda Hutcheon, Boris Uspenski, among others. As in these three novels the historical context interferes in different ways in the characters’ lives, the books were analyzed separately to make possible to identify, in each one, the periods of trauma construction and internalization. This division remains in the final chapter, where the compositional aspect of the works is checked, taking into account the narrator and his spatiotemporal point of view, the organization of narrated memory and the distorting mirrors through which the period is revisited. From these analyzes, it was observed that, although they have some differences, the narratives studied bring some features that approach then and that can be considered specific representations of literature that focuses on the Cold War period.
