Full textThe aim of this thesis is to study the small enterprises and the different kind of organisation on which they depend. In order to explain this, we have to drop the idea of independant enterprises in an uncertain state. That is the more reason why the small enterprises in charge of the transformation of cassava in Congo, create a short lived organisation. Our thought is organised in the following manner: after the presentation of the theoretical and the conceptual aspects of the economic activities, we have tried to show how the networks help in the creation and the running of small enterprises. The social networks, for these enterprises constitute the means of cutting down the running costs. Then, we have pointed out some characteristics of social networks. This kind of organisation gives birth to social proximity extraordinary situation, that is the systematic reference to the clan, to the lineage, to the ethnic group, to the region and to the village. The social proximity favours the integration in the organisation of the enterprise, the phenomenon which have nothing to do with the economy
Tyulyupo, Alexey. "Categories, search and selection in early competitor identification." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Cergy-Pontoise, Ecole supérieure des sciences économiques et commerciales, 2024. http://www.theses.fr/2024ESEC0007.
Full textThis thesis examines the search function of categories and alternative means of search in the context of identifying competitors for startup ideas. Traditional categorization literature often assumes that audiences search based on category membership, focusing primarily on the selection stage within predefined categories. However, categorization systems are complex, with hundreds of categories that are not always exclusive or sufficiently granular, making them insufficient for guiding searches effectively. Alternative search methods such as recommendations, user tags, and semantic search are increasingly available and can diminish the reliance on traditional categorization systems. Using a behavioral simulation methodology, we developed an information portal where participants were tasked with finding competitors for a startup idea. This approach allowed us to precisely record their search and selection activities, capture self-reported experiences, and observe post-search changes in their perceptions of the startup idea and its market. The participants' lack of prior knowledge about startup competitors made this setting ideal for exploring search processes and their consequences. The first chapter demonstrates that atypical companies are less likely to be selected as competitors when searches rely on industry categorization systems. This finding suggests that the search path toward objects can moderate the effect of their categorical positioning. The second chapter delves deeper into the search process, revealing that participants identified very different competitor sets due to insufficient guidance from the industrial category system. These diverse search results significantly influenced their perceptions of market competitiveness. The third chapter explores how identified competitor sets serve as reference points for strategic differentiation. Participants adjusted their startup ideas based on the competitors they discovered, indicating that search outcomes can directly impact idea development. Collectively, these studies highlight that search processes are consequential and that reliance on category membership for search may be inadequate. The findings suggest that search procedures can lead to varied perceptions and strategic decisions, emphasizing the need to consider alternative search methods in both theory and practice
Moumene, Lamia. "Communication et entreprenariat dans le cadre du développement durable : étude des pratiques des PME de la ville d'Annaba." Thesis, Nice, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013NICE2008/document.
Full textThis study deals with the question of entrepreneurship and communication within the framework of the sustainable development- the case of small business in Annaba city “Algeria”. It aims at identifying the opportunity and constraints in terms of knowledge, attitudes and behaviors which impede the entrepreneur’s expected role of leadership within a perspective of sustainable development. In other words, we believe that the importance of the responsible communication is double fold. It can lead the companies to better meet the environmental challenges. It can also promote the emergence of a new entrepreneurial profile of an eco-transformational type. Our assumptions are confirmed through the collected data in the field work on the basis of direct observation, interviews and a questionnaire applied to a sample of 100 entrepreneurs and supported by the Epi. Info.Software test. Trends and suggestions are made to the chamber of commerce and industry in the form of an action plan which confirm that the establishment of an observatory has become necessary

Full textThe aim of this thesis is to further the understanding of the entrepreneurial process, from opportunity recognition to the development of start-ups. Various literatures are used, such as those of entrepreneurship, innovation studies and theories of organisations. The theoretical framework also introduces the concept of entrepreneurial agency. This framework is tested through thirteen case studies of biotech start-ups. The results are presented in three analytical chapters. The first develops the impact of involving financiers on entrepreneurial agency and firm evolution. The second aims at observing the effects of a change of leadership throughout the entrepreneurial activity, and links the background of the founder with the strategy of the firm. The final chapter attempts to understand the steps that a research project goes through when transitioning from the incubating organisation to a newly created enterprise

Full textAn increasing number of organizations want to commit fully to a more sustainable practice of business, and attempt to profoundly change the way they operate. For those, it is the assumption of the work that the whole society has a duty to implement measures, attitudes and initiatives that will foster the change of behavior and practice. While people steeply increase their demand for responsible practice and governments draw boundaries within which to operate, this work contributes to fulfilling the academia’s duty, by offering guidance to organizations on how to move out of business – as - usual to create and appropriate a corporate strategy that integrates sustainability considerations. For the purpose, it investigates how organizations can effectively integrate sustainability considerations into their inner corporate strategy, and identifies new resources, processes and incentives that can foster the change towards a more responsible practice of business

Full textIn my first paper, I study the spillover effects of removing barriers to growth in one product market on entry and growth of firms in the downstream market. Firms that are constrained produce low quality goods and, in turn, constrain the downstream market. I exploit the repeal of product reservation in India, whereby hundreds of products stop being reserved for exclusive production by small firms. With a more efficient input market, entry in the downstream product market increases with no observable decline in quality of entrants. Productive downstream firms grow and less productive ones shrink. My results imply that business dynamism has positive spill-over effects along the supply chain. In another paper, I study the process of creative destruction and whether incumbents faced with displacement risk continue to innovate. To do so, I construct a measure of displacement risk using patent text similarity measures. Theory predicts that threat of technologically advanced entry incentivises firms closer to the frontier to catch up but may discourage innovation in firms further away from the frontier. As predicted by theory, firms far away from the frontier decrease their investment in R&D when faced with displacement risk. At the same time, I find that ex-ante low productivity firms are not more likely to exit than ex-ante high productivity firms. Moreover, while firms far away from the frontier reduce in-house R&D spending, they are more likely to engage in mergers and acquisitions and invest as corporate venture capitalists. My findings suggest that upon facing displacement risk, firms regain their innovation edge by investing outside the boundaries of the firm. In a third paper, my co-authors and I investigate the role of banks in propagating the negative effects of large corporate bankruptcies to the real economy. Banks that suffer from large corporate bankruptcies on their loan portfolio increase loan spreads in subsequent commercial lending. The effect persists after controlling for borrower risk, industry and geographical contagion. The effect does not manifest via deterioration of the bank’s balance sheet, loss of reputation or bank learning about its screening ability. Rather, it stems from earnings management by the bank and disproportionately affects small firms with fewer outside options for raising financing. Overall, our findings suggest that banks play an important role in disseminating microeconomic shocks

Full textThis thesis consists of three chapters and studies the firm's organizational structure at a different stage of its life cycle: early-stage, growth, business group. The first chapter investigates the underlying reasons for the gender funding gap in the venture capital industry. It highlights a significant role for investors' stereotypes that ultimately impedes minority-founded startups' growth. Entrepreneurs’ human capital mitigates to some extends investors’ stereotypes. The second chapter identifies conditions under which firms choose to grow by buying an incumbent company as opposed to building on their pre-existing human capital resources. The third chapter focuses on large business groups. It provides evidence that investors are not always aware of the boundaries of the firm and miss predictive information released at another level of the group
