In this paper we explore the determinants of changes in the industrial populations rates in Austrian manufacturing. The research questions whether or not the nature and causes of the net entry of firms across three different stages of entry-exit decision and firm growth are different. Our econometric analysis suggests that there are differences in leading to the determination of the entry and exit at different stages of the entry-exit decision, and that aggregate growth and disaggregate growth (measured in employment terms) play a major role. Bricolage is one way firms innovate in the midst of resource constraints. In this thesis bricolage in entrepreneurial firms is investigated as is its impact on firm performance. The research provides empirical tests of bricolage and firm performance and tests environmental dynamism and team compositions as moderating effects that impact the bricolage-performance relationship. The limits of bricolage during firm creation are also explored. Using data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor and the World Bank, I examine the effect of the Great Recession on total early-stage entrepreneurship rates in nineteen European countries relative to the United States, as well as on male and female entrepreneurship independently. I find that the Great Recession has led to increased entrepreneurship rates overall and that there is little variation across European countries relative to the United States.
