Abstract:

Abstract:
In this thesis we study the properties of strongly-coupled large-N conformal field theories (CFT’s) using AdS/CFT correspondence. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction. In Chapter 2 we study the shear viscosity of strongly-coupled large-N conformal field theories. We find that it is affected by \(R^2\) corrections to the AdS action and present an example of 4D theory in which the the conjectured universal lower bound on viscosity-to-entropy ratio \(\eta/s > 1/4 \pi\) is violated by 1/N corrections. This fact proves that there is no universal lower bound of \(1/4 \pi\) on viscosity-to-entropy ratio

Abstract:
This thesis describes how transmission of the 2009 A/H1N1 influenza pandemic in the United States varied geographically, with emphasis on population distribution and age structure. This is made possible by the availability of medical claims records maintained in the private sector that capture the weekly incidence of influenza-like illness in 834 US cities. First, a probabilistic method is developed to infer each city's outbreak onset time. This reveals a clear wave-like pattern of transmission originating in the south-eastern US. Then, a mechanistic mathematical model is constructed to descri

I divide these topics into three categories: the Physical Category, the Relevance Category and the Signal Elements Category. So one naturally wonders: where is $hbar$ hiding in entropic gravity? To address this question, we first reformulate the entropic derivation of Newton''s gravitation force law to address a self-consistent approach to the problem. Next we argue that as the concept of minimal length has been invoked in the Bekenstein entropic derivation, the genera

We study a proposed statistical explanation for the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of a black hole in which entropy arises quantum-mechanically as a result of entanglement. Arguments for the identification of black hole entropy with entanglement entropy are reviewed in the framework of quantum field theory, emphasizing the role of renormalization and the need for a physical short-distance cutoff. Our main novel contribution is a calculation of entanglement entropy in loop quantum gravity. The kinematical Hilbert space and spin network states are introduced, and the entanglement entropy of these s

One of the recent fundamental developments in theoretical high energy physics is the AdS/CFT correspondence [1, 2, 3, 4] which posits a relationship between Quantum Field Theories (QFT) in a given dimension and String Theory on a higher dimensional anti- de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. This has revolutionised our understanding of QFTs (more speci fically conformal fi eld theories (CFTs)) and string theory/gravity, and has far reaching consequences for explorations into a vast array of physical phenomena. Abstract:
This dissertation covers two di erent but related topics: the construction of new black hole solutions and the study of the microscopic origin of black hole entropy. In the solution part, two di erent sets of new solutions are found. The rst concerns a Plebanski-Demianski type solution in the ve-dimensional pure Einstein gravity, and the second concerns a three-charge (two of which equal) two-rotation solution to the ve-dimensional maximal supergravity. Obtaining new and interesting black hole solutions is an important and challenging task in studying general relativity and its extensions.

I begin by showing that the classical null energy condition (NEC) can arise as a consequence of the second law of thermodynamics applied to local holographic screens. This is accomplished by essentially reversing the steps of Hawking's area theorem, leading to the Ricci convergence condition as an input, from which an application of Einstein's equations yields the NEC. We show that the quantum entanglement entropy of the ground state of the free Maxwell field in d=4 dimensions, conformal p-forms, and conformal higher spins can be obtained from the partition function on the hyperbolic cylinder.
