Abstract:
In this thesis, we address problems encountered in complex network analysis using graph theoretic methods. The thesis specifically centers on the challenge of how to characterize the structural properties and time evolution of graphs. We commence by providing a brief roadmap for our research in Chapter 1, followed by a review of the relevant research literature in Chapter 2. The remainder of the thesis is structured as follows. In Chapter 3, we focus on the graph entropic characterizations and explore whether the von Neumann entropy recently defined only on undirected graphs, can be extended t

Statistical analysis of time series. With compelling arguments we show that the Diffusion Entropy Analysis (DEA) is the only method of the literature of the Science of Complexity that correctly determines the scaling hidden within a time series reflecting a Complex Process. The time series is thought of as a source of fluctuations, and the DEA is based on the Shannon entropy of the diffusion process generated by these fluctuations. All traditional methods of scaling analysis, instead, are based on the variance of this diffusion process. The variance methods detect the real scaling only if the

In econometric analysis, the traditional bootstrap and related methods often require the assumption of stationarity. This assumption says that the distribution function of the process remains unchanged when shifted in time by an arbitrary value, imposing perfect time-homogeneity. In terms of the joint distribution, stationarity implies that the date of the first time index is not relevant. There are many problems with this assumption however for time series data. With time series, the order in which random realizations occur is crucial. This is why theorists work with stochastic processes, wit

The Residence Time Distribution (RTD) is a non-parametric model that more fully describes solute transport than traditional models, and therefore can provide additional insight into the underlying mixing processes. As a predictive model, a downstream concentration profile can be expressed as the convolution of an upstream concentration profile with an

Requests to internet servers do not in general behave in a manner which can be easily modelled and forecast with typical time-series methods, but often have a significant presence of spikes in the data, a property we call “burstiness”. In this thesis we study various entropy measures and their properties for different distributions, both theoretically and via simulation, in order to better find out how these measures could be used to characterise the predictability and burstiness of time series. We find that a low entropy can indicate a heavy-tailed distribution, which for time series correspo

Abstract:
Provisional or unfinished images, forms and actions can sustain their status by continuing to change. This can resist programmed experience of their state, and shift their relationship as images within time. The sub-aesthetics of the unfinished and entropic can alter our understanding of where and how images are formed and located within time. My paintings each exist within their own emergent systems of time, structure and productive disorder. This thesis discusses these ideas in relation to DAY FOLDER and other work made during my MFA studies.

STUDY 1. INTRODUCTION. Insufficient physical activity is a major risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. Using isotemporal substitution models, the influence of replacing modest durations of sedentary time with physical activity on diabetes risk scores can be studied. The aims of this study were to examine the relationship between diabetes risk scores, sedentary time and physical activity measured using wrist worn accelerometry, and to model the changes in risk scores by reallocating movement behaviours from lower to a higher intensity. METHODS. Data from 251 (93 males; aged 56.7 ± 8.8) pa
