Abstract:
Transformations of public spaces in different parts of the city have their own characteristics. The fate of public space in the center and on the periphery may seem to be a predetermined by location. But the changing social environment makes its own adjustments. This paper analyzes the influence of the social environment on the public spaces changing in the peripheral part of Kyiv. Research subject is the contemporary transformation of two green public spaces in Kyiv neighborhoods. The aim of the paper is to determine the peculiarities of green public spaces transformations in the peripheral part of Kyiv influenced by the social environment, to determine the nature of its impact on public spaces changes. Analysis of the transformation of public spaces in the peripheral part of Kyiv confirmed the decisive role of the social environment, which is manifesting through the needs of local residents, and made it possible to identify the main factors of change: local initiatives, web forums, cooperation with business, new construction, changes in the residents’ age and social structure, housing ownership. Based on the analysis of users’ perception of public spaces, their accessibility, use, image and integration it was determined the most problematic aspects of the functioning of Kyiv neighborhoods’ public spaces that require priority changes. All this determines the scientific novelty and relevance of the study of green public spaces on the periphery of the city in the context of the social environment of their evolution.

Abstract:
In October 1948, a comprehensive long-term plan for the transformation of environment was adopted in the USSR in order to ensure maximum sustainable yields in the main agricultural regions of the country. The project, designed for the period 1949–1965, was developed as a reaction to the consequences of severe 1946 drought, but its content is undoubtedly a strategic document of national importance. The created forest belts and reservoirs had to significantly diversify the flora and fauna of the country. Consequently, the plan combines the tasks of environmental protection and obtaining maximum sustainable yields. The paramount feature of this plan was its thorough scientific support based on the ideas of a whole galaxy of prominent Russian scientists and practitioners. This plan anticipated the emergence of the national concept of rational nature management. It was not fully implemented. However, the very fact of its adoption and partial implementation has become a bright page in the history of domestic land use and an instructive example of a combination of economic, social and environmental interests. Numerous manifestations of this plan legacy in modern conditions are perceived as a multifunctional historical heritage that deserves a high national status.

Abstract:
In this study, it is understood that Turkey is developing rapidly, the increasing need for accommodation due to migration from the village to the city and the distorted structure in the cities, and the urban transformation efforts carried out in order to overcome this skewed construction necessitated the reorganization of the environment and the place. Urban transformation, which brings about significant changes in social life, causes positive / negative effects especially on the social life of women. In this context, the historical process of urban transformation in Turkey and in the world has been analyzed and discussed from the perspective of environment and women's issues. In this context, it is aimed to analyze the reflections of the new place and the surrounding area, which are the result of urban transformation, on the social life of women, by interviewing face to face with the women living in Etimesgut in the city of Ankara and having experienced the process of urban transformation. In this framework, it is aimed to produce suggestions on spatial planning and environmental regulations that take into account the needs of women in urban life. The fact that women spend more time in domestic life, that women play an active role in neighborhood culture, requires that women be treated as a special category in every kind of urban transformation project and the possible effects on women should be examined. At the end of the work; It has been determined that women are not included in decision-making mechanisms in urban transformation projects carried out in Etimesgut region, that the lifestyles and needs of women are not adequately taken into account when domestic and environmental regulations are being made and that urban transformations have more intense and different effects on women.

Abstract:
The digital environment is forming new social reality: the structure of society and principles of formation and functioning of social groups are being changed, identity is being blurred, as well as the labor, education and consumption markets are experiencing changes. These changes demand serious social thought. The article presents social inequality transformation issues in conditions of digitalization and its probable reasons. In particular, some of the reasons, that influence new inequity forms, are: identity bounds violation, due to technological progress affecting personal space; simultaneous existence of virtual (online) and real (offline) spaces, severely increased multiplicity of statuses (including fictional), migration virtualization, and transition of some parameters from rank to nominal, etc. Digitalization also impacts on social institutions, such as education one. For instance, part-time or full switch to online-education is gaining popularity. The article shows some researches among students about online educational programs: respondents claim that the traditional and online models should be combined. For sure, online platforms have advantage in access to variable sources, such as particular online courses, subscription to EJ, useful data bases, permanent chatting with students and professors, etc. In addition, it is assumed that the social structure of the education system that has implemented e-learning becomes less hierarchical, which is associated with the digitization of the text.

Abstract:
The paper concerns the fundamental issues of the sustainable social progress. As follows from the argumentation, a realistic design of institutional changes in connection with resource and organizational changes needed for sustainable progress is called for to realize in the line of overall social system transformation. This approach presupposes an exhaustive study of interconnected transformations in the main societal fields as system processes considering the influence of relatively exogenous factors (technological, demographic and climate changes). In turn, it is advisable, taking in view current world challenges, to expose an idea of universal sustainability, the property of which is inherent in all social practices, and not just mediating the relationship between society and its environment. The first result of study concludes in revealing the fundamentals of overall social system sustainability. The second result: the transition to sustainable transformation of society supposes the synergetic implementation of structure-forming system and policy-driven shifts.

Abstract:
Purpose: the main goal of the research is to develop a humanistic approach to digital transformation management based on the principles of social responsibility in the current uncertain environment. Methods: the research is based on the integration of conceptual approaches to understanding the specifics of the functioning of a modern organization in the context of digital transformation and the impact of the new crisis on Russian business. The author attempts to determine the emerging trends in the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the decisions made by company managers in relation to their employees. The basic concepts of the research cover the areas of digitalization of the economy, humanization of economic growth, human capital, personnel management, and social responsibility of business. Results: the analysis of the combined influence of factors of economic, technological, demographic and cultural Genesis on the formation of a new approach to the construction of interaction between organizations and people in the direction of greater emphasis on anthropocentrism. It is determined that this kind of relationship should be based on the principles of socially responsible business behavior, recognizing the person as the main resource for digital transformation, achieving commercial success and sustainable development. The article assesses the real situation in the labor market and in Russian companies under the influence of digital challenges and the coronavirus pandemic. It is emphasized that the demand for social orientation of business increases many times during crisis periods, during which there is a rethinking of values and the formation of new foundations for future development. Recommendations are given for eliminating or minimizing the conflict between humanistic and technocratic approaches in the management of companies based on the principles of social responsibility. Conclusions and Relevance: the solution of a set of tasks for the digital transformation of the economy, saturating the business environment with new technological solutions, in the current conditions of uncertainty formed under the influence of the coronavirus pandemic, actualizes the problem of preserving humanity in a technologizing world. It is imperative to find ways to remove the generally accepted (perhaps far-fetched?) contradictions between human essence and technological transformations. Companies, while adopting strategic guidelines in the field of goal setting, building their potential and building prospects, should give priority to the development of human resources as an integral element of technological progress and a key factor in creating long-term value for companies and society as a whole.

This article considers whether different types of Clinical Legal Education (CLE) programs have the same potential to provide a transformative learning experience for students. The author uses Mezirow’s theory to postulate that, although addressing a societal need, ‘missing middle’ Clinical Legal Education programs – those that assist middle-income Australians – may not provide the necessary environment, including an environment ripe for ‘disorienting dilemmas’, for transformative learning. After a comparison of missing middle clinics in Australia and poverty law clinics in the United States of America (US), the author suggests that disorienting dilemmas may only be offered by Clinical Legal Education programs aimed at assisting society’s most vulnerable people.

“How does an airport transform the environment of a region?” As a case study, the Cancun airport is proposed, which is the second in importance at the national level. It is explained that in the international civil aviation system there are norms and recommended methods that guide the construction of the airport infrastructure, to conserve and contribute to their environment in compensation of the social, economic, environmental and political transformation carried out. ASUR (aerodromes operations group) governed by Mexican aeronautical legislation, every 5 years presents its master development plan to contribute to the improvement of the environment and the prudent use of Cancun’s natural resources, thus, although the inhabitants have a contrary perception about the Cancun airport, it has become a sustainable infrastructure, which although it is true it modified the environment, nowadays it is the most important tourist bridge in the country leaving an economic development, social and cultural development superior to that of other airports. The above is concluded based on a mixed methodology that used the survey as an instrument for collecting information, statistics for data analysis and documentary information to provide legal support to the study. While the questions are not identical to those asked in previous research in post-Soviet societies, our findings are comparable—greatest trust in relatives and friends, less in people in general and least in politicians and institutions of social control. Levels of trust are not high, and there are interesting differences between the countries, giving support to the view that trust and confidence are eroded by sudden and dramatic negatively perceived change.

Abstract:
The structural organization of the city's architectural environment, including territories, spaces, and loci, is considered. It is shown that the architectural environment of the historical center of the city is characterized by special subject-spatial inclusions-loci of power. The complex dynamics of the interdependence of social existence and the architectural environment determines the relevance of studying the interaction of the locus (architecture) of power and society. The basic features of the architecture of power are considered: sociotechnical character, features of functioning, orderliness of the structure. The author analyzes the advantages and social significance of the power architecture, the latent features of the functional structure, the diachrony of compositional properties and the principles of ensuring closeness. The potential influence of power using architecture semantics is correlated with the processes of implementing algorithms for habitation, distribution, and dominance. The transformation of the status of the architectural space of power is considered not only as an architectural and planning transformation, but also as a change in its semantics and attitude to it. It is argued that the conceptualization of the locus (the assertion of authenticity) is converted into the popularity, influence, and economic growth of the locality. The social significance of loci of power is in their ability to subject-spatial modeling of social reality; in the formation of the potential for relieving social tension; in prompting the behavior of social actors in non-standard situations. It is noted that modern spaces of power are characterized by a gradual rejection of traditional closeness in favor of simulated openness. It is stated that the image of the architectural space of power is one of the angles of the socio-historical portrait of power.

Abstract:
The paper presents several basic arguments which corroborate the researches of the Russian sociologist Zinaida Golenkova aabout transformational processes in postsoviet Russia, specially about the processes which led to the changes in the social structure of the Russian society. The author believes, relying also on the researches of other Russian scientists, that the transformation of the post-soviet Russian society occurs within the historical type which is called "the social engineering". Unlike the other two types of historical transformation ("modification" within a specific type of social relations and the changes created in "the bourgeois-democratic revolutions"), "the social engineering" implies a specific violation of the historical reality of a society. In author's opinion, "the social engineering" is characteristic both for the revolutionary transformation of Russia in 1917 and for its transformation in the last decade of the 20th century. Namely, the transformations realized in Russia in the last decade of the 20th century to a great degree represent "social engineering", because they are realized with the help of the instruments of political power, by the forceful reforms from the top, in order to form the social-economic structure according to the models which were historically created in significantly different social environments. In that sense, the post-soviet transformation of the Russian society could be designated as a state of social chaos. Such a state to a great degree created a specific social system, which is argu-mentatively discussed in the research studies of Z. Golenkova.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to report the results of an industry-funded qualitative interdisciplinary research project that has produced a new approach to motorway noise management called “noise transformation”. Design/methodology/approach Four iterative design tests guided by listening as methodology. These included field recordings, laboratory tests and two field tests. Field tests were conducted in combination with ethnographers, who verified community responses to field-based transformations. Findings Transformation requires an audible perception of both background and introduced sounds in all instances. Transformation creates a 1–2 dB increase in background sound levels, making it counterintuitive to traditional noise attenuation approaches. Noise transformation is an electroacoustic soundscape design method that treats noise as a “design material”. When listening to motorway noise transformations, participants were actually experiencing another rendering of a sound that they had already acquired a degree of attunement to. Thus, they experienced transformations as somehow familiar or normal and easy to feel comfortable with. Originality/value Noise transformation is a new approach to noise management. Typically, noise management focusses on reduction in dB levels. Noise transformation focusses on changing the perceptual impact of noise to make it less annoying. It brings together urban design, composition and ethnography as a means to think about the future design of outdoor environments affected by motorway traffic noise, and should be of interests to planners, designers and artists. The authors have structured the paper around listening as methodology, through which both design and ethnography outcomes were achieved.

Abstract:
Calls for transformation, transformative research, and transformational impact are increasingly heard from governments, industry, and universities to recast a course towards sustainability. This paper retraces a social, qualitative, and interpretive research endeavor to contribute to broadening the conceptual base of transformation. Drawing on perspectives of practitioners involved in working with communities to bring about change in how land and water are managed, the objective of the research was to elicit a range of practice-based encounters of transformation to inform policy and theory. In identifying precursors and processes for change, the findings bring into view the often unseen internal and experiential dimensions of transformation. As such, the research provides insights on where transformation takes place, what the first step of transformation might look like, and what might be deemed transformational. The paper also builds on social practice theory to produce an explanatory model of transformational capacity that is enabled and constrained by structures, processes, understanding, and authority that impact on social practices of knowledge generation (including science) and land and water decision-making.

The key role of company management in promoting the ideology of digital transformation is noted. Since the use of digital technologies, along with positive effects, can pose a threat to human security, the preservation of his rights and freedom, it becomes necessary to use the concept of social responsibility in carrying out digital transformations of society. The principles of social responsibility in carrying out digital transformations are defined. Conclusions and Relevance: the processes of digital transformation have firmly entered into all spheres of society. Despite the technological nature, digital development should take place in the logic of a humanistic approach. It is based on the principles of morality, recognition of the inviolability of human rights, with the emphasis on the importance of social responsibility of all actors of digital transformation. At the same time, Russia should build its own model of digital transformation based on respect for dignity, freedom and human rights guaranteed by the Constitution.

In this paper I examine two activities which are often attributed with a role to play in social transformation, namely environmental education and research, for their potential to contribute to collective change. I do so by drawing on the results of a recent empirical study in southern Africa, in which I distinguished four orientations to research in/and environmental education. In exploring the transformatory roles of research and environmental education, as conceptualised in these four orientations, I conclude that the most prevalent orientations reveal modernistic assumptions which limit their potential to contribute to social transformation. The decision to interpret the results by focusing on social transformation grew out of what I regarded as the most significant dimensions of the context of the study. These are the global and regional calls for social transformation in response to the environment crisis, the dramatic political changes in parts of southern Africa, the need to improve education in the region, and finally, less obvious global epistemological shifts in the conceptualisation of science, education and social research.

Over the past four decades, the economy and society of China and Russia have undergone transformation. Relevant social policies and business environments have constantly changed. So have the ways of interaction among governments, enterprises and citizens. In the relationship between government and citizen, China and Russia have walked different paths in choosing and adjusting social policies, but both have steadily improved people’s well-being. In the relationship between government and business, both countries have achieved significant improvements in business environment through supply-side reforms of public goods and institutions. The theoretical relationship between government and citizen and that between government and business are embodied in social policy and business environment in reality. However, the two are not parallel, but interact with each other and are nested in each other. The government plays a leading role, and its interaction with enterprise and citizen tests the governance systems and capabilities of Beijing and Moscow.

Abstract:
Abstract Digital transformation, uncertain funding and global competition are rapidly disrupting higher and vocational educational contexts and contributing significantly to the challenges and opportunities of a fluid educational environment. To remain relevant for the 21st century and to Industry 4.0, educational providers, disciplines and professions must anticipate the future world of work and educate today’s students as tomorrow’s graduates with capabilities for work in emerging contexts that may not sit within existing roles, disciplines, trades, professions or forms of communication. The tertiary sector increasingly seeks to navigate these challenges, remain competitive and create engaging learning through flexible, integrated and personalised learning offerings and pathways, adopting digital learning and multi-modal designs and by innovating in curriculum, pedagogies and assessments. However, to transform legacy learning environments and practices requires academic development that builds capability, resilience and agility, as well as an appetite for such transformation within the discipline. It requires a cultural transformation toward anticipative education both in the profession and in the university. In this article, we demonstrate that a framework to scaffold anticipative education does enable social work educators to accommodate uncertainty, build curriculum flexibility, retain relevance and foster academic resilience to navigate and find a fit in new and emerging contexts.

The multidimensional social problems that everyone seeks to remedy them are very complex and no actor can confront them on their own. So the different parties have to work together by creating relations of partnerships. The State has long been the main actor in the control and regulation of social relations. However, in recent years there has been a rapid decline in their role given the enormous charge and lack of resources. Hence the need for the intervention of other parties. Some review of literature explores the conceptualization of social partnership in order to meet the needs of the organization or solve organizational problems. More and more large companies and multinationals get started on a voluntary approach to social responsibility and have begun to move closer to certain social enterprises by concluding partnership agreements. The purpose of this study was to study the social transformation that follows the creation of a relation of a social partnership between a social enterprise and a company that has involved a strategy of social responsibility. Then, we will present the environment to finally study the impact of social partnership on the environment; on economic, cultural and political dimensions.

Abstract:
Over the last three decades, the disruptive quality of urban and social restructuring processes in Turkey has been intensified by the government’s decision to embrace the concept of urban transformation as a tool to boost the Turkish economy and development. In this respect, many cities have experienced a rapid urban transformation, practicing more of a top to down approach in implementing an urban planning and design, and at the same time undervaluing the potential of a participatory process for a common future and for the improvement of the quality of social and urban life. The article examines the process of “social and spatial restructuring” for the old-city housings of the city of Istanbul, as part of a larger urban transformation phenomenon. The research comparatively analyses three different urban transformation projects from the city of Istanbul's historically valued Golden Horn area and focuses on missions, actors and roles of the projects in terms of the social and spatial restructuring phases. As all three cases in this respect reclaims an upgrading of the quality of urban environment of the historic neighbourhoods; the mission is to expose the local multidimensional structure of these transformations via comparative discussion of their potentials, capabilities and limits in respect to the dynamics of urban transformation and community participation.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate diversity conflict intersections and how the meanings of diversity markers such as gender and race might be transformed. It highlights the resources of South African women leaders in higher education institutions for doing so. Design/methodology/approach This study proceeds from a social constructivist perspective, seeking to uncover narrated conflict experiences via a hermeneutical approach. Findings Women leaders in South Africa experience diversity conflict across multiple intersecting diversity markers, such as gender, race, ethnicity and class. They are united by inner resources which, if utilized, might bring about transformation. Research limitations/implications Intersectional approach to diversity conflict is a viable means for uncovering positive resources for transformation across intersecting diversity markers. Practical implications Practitioners wishing to overcome diversity conflict should identify positive resources across intersecting diversity markers. This way, organizations and individuals might bring about transformation. Social implications In societal environment wherein one diversity marker is institutionalized on a structural level, such as race in South Africa, diversity conflict might be enlarged beyond its actual scope, thereby becoming insurmountable. This needs to be prevented. Originality/value This paper studies diversity conflict intersections in a highly diverse societal environment in organizations facing transformational challenges and from the perspective of women leaders.

Abstract:
A social community as the main structure of people's social functioning is an interdisciplinary subject for study. Its different definitions accentuate social interactions in social communities irrespective of the basis and purpose of their unity. The authors focused on territorial communities (urban and country residents) as the primary community where social interaction takes place and social connections are formed in a certain location. Empirical findings obtained in the framework of RFBR grant no. 19-411-340002 "Territorial communities in social transformation: sociological and managerial analysis" permit an analysis of processes taking place in territorial communities at the time of social transformation. Most provincial Russian regions, towns and villages show low social activism, apathetic social behavior devoid of initiative. Among the characteristic features of social anomie experienced by territorial communities, the authors also emphasize low or moderate degree of trust on social institutions and other people, half-faced loyalty to one's community, poor solidary ties inside a territorial community which obstruct social interactions and put the very existence of a territorial community at stake. Besides, the state of a territorial community may be a which may be a response to social change, crises, and the depressive vector of regional development. The inert social environment, a condition of social anomie represents the greatest difficulty in management since it is marked by latent conflict and "alienated sociality". The authors consider different scenarios of development of a territorial community and overcoming disunity as a response to social transformations and inequality. Understanding the new social reality of towns and villages, the meanings and practices found in the interactions of urban and country residents in the ever-changing social landscape can help in overcoming social anomie, developing a territorial identity and solidary relations in the region, and preserving the community.

This paper discusses the issue of theology that is indebted to sciences and technology. Technology, even though imposes a negative impact on theology particulary to those whose faith is still unstable, has strengthened Moslem’s belief and does not become a threat. How technology reinforces the faith of Moslem is strongly related to the agenda of reactualization through the praxis activities. The mode of social life should be put on the basis of social transformation in accordance with needs and challenges. The tranformation is closely tied to the development with race structure or human consciousness with the environment. The modification of human life in order to achieve such transformation can be actualized through four basic cultural structures: ethical constitution, esthetic, work orientation and the knowledge of technology. The writer concludes that four elements mentioned above determines the success of Islamic civilization for the future life.

Abstract:
The article shows that the specificity of a holistic personality adjustment process in social systems is not confined only because of the peculiarities of its elements, such as the personal maturity, changes in the social conditions of the environment, and is determined by the interaction of structural components of the adaptive capacity of the individual. This maladjustment of one of these components will inevitably impact on the integrity of the individual adaptation process. It was determined that based on the analysis of the structural components of adaptation of the person (socially adapted situation, social need for adaptive, adaptive psychological need) there is the need to clarify the role of each of these components in the process of adaptation of the person. In the context of investigations under the holistic process of social adaptation of personality in social systems we mean active mutual adaptation of the individual and the social environment to each other in order to create a harmonious cooperation for the effective functioning of the individual in these social systems. Violation of this process or the implementation of its social disapproved or antisocial ways leads to the violation of the integrity of the adaptation process and it flows in unacceptable forms of society. It is emphasized that social exclusion leads to disruption of the socialization process, reflected in the increasing complexity of learning and the use of social roles, values and attitudes. In accordance with the social work we should pay attention to the replacement of anti-social norms, values and attitudes to prosocial. This process we treat as a social reinsertion - purposefully organized restructuring of the moral and valuable personality and behavioral areas that promotes the formation of social and value orientations and behavior. It was stated that the whole process of social adaptation of the person can provide awareness and reflection of environmental changes in the social systems of the environment; activity of the person in the regulation of adaptive capacity; transformation of adaptive capacity into more complex and sophisticated forms of interaction with the surrounding reality

Abstract:
The article analyzes the phenomenological character of Abay’s poems, cognitive and aesthetic representation of being (activity). The fact that the manifestation of human characteristics in the social environment is studied within the framework of an existential dichotomy (E. Fromm) is a characteristic feature of most of Abay’s philosophical poems. We see that the division of existential dichotomy summarizes the classification of the concepts «myself» and «other» in Abay’s poems. The separation of the poet from his «I» is associated with his psychological state, incompatible with the social system. The reasons for the contradiction between the individual and society are, at first, a phenomenon that takes place in consciousness. Abay’s identification with the social environment was ambiguous. The psychological and phenomenological features of the discrepancy are clearly visible in Abay’s poetry. The main motive of Abay’s poems is the search for answers to the reasons for these contradictions. At the same time, reflections on the meaning of life in terms of the dichotomy of life and death are accompanied by a search for the path of truth. At the same time, sending thoughts to the essence of existence from the point of view of the the dichotomy of life and death is combined with the search for the path of truth. The formation of transcendental phenomenological consciousness in Abay’s poem «Time is like wisps of fog on the hills” is found in many of the poet’s poems.

Abstract:
Transformations in social sciences accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic remain under-explored. The aim of the article is to analyse scientific literature on social sciences’ transformation in light of COVID-19 underpinning the elaboration of implications for teaching a Research Methodology course to the higher education students. The present research work made use of theoretical and empirical methods. The exploratory study was of qualitative nature. The study carried out in April 2021 was based on the analysis of scientific publications selected from the Web of Science and google search by indicating the key words “COVID-19” and “Social sciences’ transformation”. The conclusion is drawn that social sciences’ transformation to the remote conduct is “a new normal” in the conditions of uncertainty. Virtual fieldwork is proposed to be a new qualitative method in social sciences’ research as some populations live mostly in digital environments. Another conclusion is that there is a need for a balance, when composing the empirical study’s sample, between respondents in the digitally divided populations, namely inclusions of both groups’ - digital and non-digital - respondents. Implications for teaching a Research Methodology course to the higher education students are presented. Research limitations are identified. Directions of further research are proposed.

Abstract:
The social functions of tertiary education have gone through considerable changes with the transformation of economic environment in the more than two past decades. In the decade after the political transformation the number of students in the tertiary education increased more than threefold. Personal interests, social needs and the demands of the society lay different claims to the performance of this sector. The needs for structural transformation of the tertiary education system are connected with the development of social and economic processes. The changes of legal regulations determining the operation of the sector are induced by these factors, which refer to the autonomic characters of the public participants. Tertiary education possesses a specific market environment each of whose characters – both the supply and demand sides – strive for the enforcement of self-regulatory mechanisms.

Abstract:
In recent years, the rate of climate change appears to have accelerated, and digital transformation and environmental performance have become increasingly important in the field of corporate social responsibility. Previous studies have mainly focused on the economic consequences of digital transformation. However, research on the effect of digital transformation on reducing firms’ emissions is relatively rare. This study focused on two kinds of typical environmental pollutants: waste gas emissions and wastewater emissions. Using data on Chinese listed firms from 2010 to 2018 and adopting the fixed effect model to investigate the emission reduction effect and mechanism of digital transformation on waste gas emissions and wastewater emissions of firms, we found the following: (1) digital transformation significantly reduces pollution emissions; (2) the relationship is more pronounced in state-owned enterprises (SOEs), high-polluting enterprises, and economically developed regions; (3) to gain a more in-depth understanding of how digital transformation affects the pollution emission behavior of firms, we further conducted mechanism tests and found that digital transformation reduces pollution by increasing total factor productivity and green innovation and improving firms’ internal controls. The above conclusions still hold after a series of robustness tests, including alternative econometric specifications and overcoming potential endogeneity with an instrumental variable. Overall, our findings provide new insights into the effect of digital transformation on environmental pollution emissions. Hence, all governments should pay more attention to digital transformation for sustainable development and improved environmental quality.
