The contamination of natural resources by human activity can have severe socio-economical impacts. Environmental analytical chemistry plays an essential role in the solving of these environmental problems. However, conventional environmental analytical procedures are generally lengthy and necessitate several steps. Hybrid microscale analytical techniques have been developed with the objective of minimizing the number of sample preparation steps, avoiding the use of organic solvents and reducing the size of the samples required for an analysis as well as increasing the speed of analyses.<br>An

Abstract:
Proteins have evolved over millions of years to serve a plethora of highly specialized functions in biological systems. Given the enormous diversity in structure and function, it is truly surprising that only 20 different amino acids are utilized as the building blocks of proteins. Furthermore, only a small set of metal cations that are biologically available are used as structural or catalytically active cofactors in proteins, whereas rare metal cations such as platinum, ruthenium or rhodium remain absent. In the 20th century myriad catalysts, based on non-biological transition metals, emerge

Abstract:
Petroleum is one of the most important natural resources, but can also be problematic to environmental and human health. Petroleum is comprised of thousands of compounds, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and heterocycles, some of which are toxic and/or carcinogenic. Traditional analytical methods for environmental monitoring of low-level PAHs are time-consuming labor-intensive, and often laboratory-bound. Efforts to achieve timely, sensitive, and accurate analysis of PAHs in the field have become a priority for environmental research and monitoring. Antibody-based biosensors a

Abstract:
The primary objectives of this research were therefore to evaluate polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) bioavailability to ecologically distinct soil invertebrates exposed to Penta-BDE-treated consumer polyurethane foam (PUF) products and biosolid products with incurred PBDEs. In laboratory bioassays, earthworms (Eisenia fetida) bioaccumulated SigmaPBDEs (47+99+100+183) up to 11,000 mug/kg lipid after 28 days from a mixture of artificial soil and anaerobically-digested sludge biosolid (ADB). Earthworms also bioaccumulated SigmaPBDEs (47+99+100+153+154+183) up to 13,500 and 838,000 mug/kg lipid
