Purpose The present work aims to analyze the feasibility of wingtip device incorporation into transport airplane configurations considering many aspects such as performance, cost and environmental impact. A design framework encompassing optimization for wing-body configurations with and without winglets is described and application examples are presented and discussed. Design/methodology/approach modeFrontier, an object-oriented optimization design framework, was used to perform optimization tasks of configurations with wingtip devices. The planes fly alone or in formation covering wide swaths of the entire landscape. These images of the herbicide spraying during the United States-Vietnam War are ubiquitous in media material about Agent Orange, the most heavily used of the fifteen herbicides sprayed during the war. Aircraft noise is the chief source of the airport and its peripheral areas. CCAR imposes restriction on specific categories of aircraft and requires more strict measurements of the noise. More scientific measurement method is required to meet the progressively tighter certification standards. Test noise procedures for transport category and turbojet airplanes are analyzed in this paper. The main aspects involved are: test sit requirements, aircraft flight path guidance, aircraft position determination, take off tests, lateral tests and approach tests.

As product performance increases, system complexity and the number of failure modes also increase. In aeronautics, economic and environmental aspects become increasingly important. As those are very much influenced by the frictional drag of the airplane, a reduction of skin friction which causes a major portion of total aerodynamic drag is desirable. One possible approach for passive drag reduction is the application of riblets small longitudinal grooves orientated in flow direction. Through an adapted rolling process, riblets can be brought into metal sheets on a large scale. For this process a thin high-strength steel wire is wound around a work roll to structure it with the negative ribl

Past research at this university has proven the feasibility of the multi-disciplinary design of a complex system involving the complete interaction of aerodynamics and structural mechanics. Critical to this design process, is the ability to accurately and efficiently calculate the sensitivities of the involved quantities (such as drag and dynamic pressure) with respect to the design variables. These calculations had been addressed in past research, but it was felt that insufficient accuracy had been obtained.
