Abstract:
The aim of this study was to measure environmental awareness in the world. The level of environmental awareness of the nations is important, because previous literature and research on environmentalism have demonstrated that the publics’ support for the protection of the environment depends on the level of its environmental awareness. In order to improve environmental awareness it is essential to first understand the level of environmental awareness in the countries today. Furthermore, we studied what factors correlate with environmental awareness on national level. In addition to measuring environmental awareness in countries, we also measured the current state of the environment in those countries and if the environment was perceived to be deteriorating or improving. The main objective of this study was to form a profile of environmental awareness in the countries of the world. The purpose of this was to give a view on the level of the country in the three different elements of environmental awareness: motivation, knowledge and skills. We were also interested to know if our measurement of national environmental awareness correlated with other national level indicators of social and economic development. The theory, methodology and tools of our study originate from two earlier projects that measured environmental awareness in the Baltic Sea Region and in the states of India. For this study the research area is extended to cover the entire Earth. An online survey was used to acquire data about the three elements of environmental awareness: motivation to act pro-environmentally, level of education, and skills to act pro-environmentally. The questionnaire also asked five questions about other issues of interest: current state of the environment, trend of the environment, environmental knowledge, possibilities to act pro-environmentally, and availability of environmental information. A total of 1861 responses were received, and 543 of those passed the initial screening process. The respondents were experts in the field, and evaluated the situation in the neighbouring countries. In consequence, 57 countries obtained the sufficient number of answers. The survey proved to provide relevant and valid data. According to the results, the countries vary significantly in their performances in the eight indicators. Overall, the countries score better in motivation, skills, and availability of information than in state of environment, trend of environment, or environmental knowledge. It is worth noting that the median of six of the nine measures fell below 50, i.e. on the ‘not so good’ area. On the other hand, the three measures that had a median over 50 are measures of empowerment. Therefore, even if the environmental situation globally is seen as worse than it could or should be, the respondents overall feel that there are ways to improve it. In order to visualize the results, maps of them were created. They showed that environmental awareness in generally higher in Europe than elsewhere, although with some exceptions. It also seems that the countries near the Equator perform worse in environmental awareness, current state of the environment and trend of the environment. As for the tested correlations with other national level indicators, we found that environmental awareness is positively correlated with national wealth and the level of education. Furthermore, populations that hold postmaterialistic values were more likely to have higher environmental awareness than materialistic publics. All in all, the information about the country’s performance in the different elements of environmental awareness is expected to be helpful in national attempts to improve environmental awareness. In our view, the method we have presented in this work provides a ready-to-use survey for others to use to measure environmental awareness cross-nationally. Further runs of the survey would provide information on the development of environmental awareness in the world
Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli mitata ympäristötietoisuutta maailmassa. Tieto ympäristötietoisuuden tasosta eri maissa on tärkeää, koska aikaisempi kirjallisuus ja tutkimus ovat osoittaneet, että kansalaisten tuki ympäristönsuojelulle riippuu yhteisön ympäristötietoisuuden tasosta. Parantaakseen ympäristötietoisuutta on tärkeää ensin tuntea ympäristötietoisuuden taso eri maissa tällä hetkellä. Tähän selvitykseen tutkimusalue on laajennettu kattamaan koko Maa. Tutkimuksen data saatiin online-kyselyn kautta. Kaiken kaikkiaan tiedosta eri maiden suoriutumisesta ympäristötietoisuuden eri osa-alueilla on oletettavasti hyötyä yrityksissä parantaa ympäristötietoisuuden tasoa maailmassa. Mielestämme tässä työssä esittämämme menetelmä tarjoaa käyttövalmiin kyselyn ympäristötietoisuuden mittaamiseen kansainvälisesti. Toistamalla kysely sopivin väliajoin saataisiin tietoa ympäristötietoisuuden kehittymisestä maailmassa

Waste disposal has always been one of the challenging aspects of human life mostly in populated areas. In every urban region, various factors can impact both amount and composition of the generated waste, and these factors might depend on a series of parameters. Therefore, developing a predictive model for waste generation has always been challenging. We believe that one main problem that city planners and policymakers face is a lack of an accurate yet easy-to-use predictive model for the waste production of a given municipality. It would be vital for them, especially during business downturns, to access a reliable predictive model that can be employed in planning resources and allocating budget. However, most developed models are complicated and extensive. The objective of this research is to study the trend of solid waste generation in Philadelphia with respect to business cycle indicators, population growth, current policies and environmental awareness, and to develop a satisfactory predictive model for waste generation. Three predictive models were developed using time series analysis, stationary and nonstationary multiple linear regressions. The nonstationary OLS model was just used for comparison purposes and does not have any modeling value. Among the other two developed predictive models, the multiple linear regression model with stationary variables yielded the most accurate predictions for both total and municipal solid waste generation of Philadelphia. Despite its unsatisfactory statistics (R-square, p-value, and F-value), stationary OLS model could predict Philadelphia’s waste generation with a low level of approximately 9% error. Although time series modeling demonstrated a less successful prediction comparing to the stationary OLS model (25% error for total solid waste, and 10.7% error for municipal waste predictions), it would be a more reliable method based on its model statistics. The common variable used in all three developed models which made our modeling different from the Streets Department’s estimations was unemployment rate. Including an economic factor such as unemployment rate in modeling the waste generation could be helpful especially during economic downturns, in which economic factors can dominate the effects of population growth on waste generation. A prediction of waste generation may not only help waste management sector in landfill and waste-to-energy facilities planning but it also provides the basis for a good estimation of its future environmental impacts. In future, we are hoping to predict related environmental trends such as greenhouse gas emissions using our predictive model.

Abstract:
According to Environment Canada, across the country there are currently over 1400 abandoned gas station sites that are contaminated. Unbeknownst to local residents, many of these sites are undergoing remediation. Temporary interventions called remedial landscapes can be designed by landscape architects to communicate to the public the remediation activities, which are otherwise hidden from view. Environmental psychologists note that pro-environmental behaviour stems from increased awareness of environmental degradation. Furthermore, by presenting first hand information in the form of a landscape, people can make their own decisions concerning their role in unsustainable practices. This thesis posits that by experiencing remedial landscapes, people will change their environmental attitudes and or behaviours. Remedial landscapes also offer opportunities for public art and further exploration of alternative forms of remediation. It includes not only precedent studies of other remedial landscapes, but a public perception survey concerning a gas station undergoing remediation in Kerrisdale, Vancouver. The survey indicated that the remediation of contaminated sites is a community concern and that the remediation should be made more visible. Participants also agreed that the use of a designed landscape would be a viable tool for communicating the status of the site. This research informed a set of design guidelines for the Kerrisdale ‘test site.’ A remedial landscape has been designed using these guidelines and is included as part of the thesis.

Abstract:
Life in the Woods (1854) och Into the Wild (1996) av Jon Krakauer, med hjälp av en ekokritisk analys. Arran Stibbe, 2009).

Abstract:
Over the last 30 years, environmental education has been part of the curriculum in Southwest Florida public schools. Curriculum objectives, such as, environmental attitude, knowledge, and awareness (AKA), have been investigated in the literature as ways to improve the overall behavior of future citizens toward the environment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the aforementioned objectives among the following groups: environmental specialists, high school instructors, high school students, and the parents of the corresponding students in three Southwest Florida counties during the 2003-2004 school year. An instrument was developed to measure the groups' levels of awareness, knowledge, and attitude as well as their levels of self-efficacy. The returned surveys represented responses from: 27 environmental specialists, 15 high school instructors, 224 high school students, and 222 parents. This study found statistically significant differences among the groups regarding the levels of awareness, knowledge, and attitude as related to environmental issues. The environmental specialists scored highest for all AKA components as compared to the lowest levels presented by parent awareness, parent attitude, and high school student knowledge. In addition, factors such as socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and preference of leisure activities resulted in differences among the groups regarding their levels of environmental AKA. This study supports the evaluation of AKA levels among participants as an appropriate approach to the evaluation of environmental curriculum objectives. In addition, the study suggests a simplified measurement of AKA as an attempt to unify the parameters measured by numerous instruments found throughout environmental education literature. The results of this study may assist environmental specialists, instructors, and school districts in the evaluation of environmental education curricula.

Abstract:

Environmental problems are seen as the first priority that all countries try to find as a solution to be more sustainable. These issues arise due to the lack of our responsibility to the world. Researchers agree on that the starting point in changing our society to be green is to increase environmental awareness (Jiang et al., 1999). Several sectors accept this idea like UNESCO which focuses on education as a tool to promote sustainable development (UNESCO, 2002).

Following UNESCO, our study investigates university students’ environmental awareness. The Authors hope that the outcome not only reflects university performance, but also helps to develop the environment in the future.  Hence, the authors selected the University of Gävle or HiG, as a case study because it is a best practice in Environmental Management System (EMS). Moreover, HiG received the ISO 14001 certificate and it has a continuous improvement program (Sammalisto, 2007, p.69).

The study was started by reviewing research literatures concerning Environmental Management System (EMS), Sustainable Development (SD), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Environmental Awareness. The authors found that there are few studies talking about students’ awareness in universities after being awarded ISO 14001. Notice that the research was seen only from environmental perspective (Flint, 2004).

To answer research questions, two surveys were adopted. The first part focused on teachers and officers (or staffs) who work on environmental issues. While, the second part focused on the students which were divided into Swedish and international.

The research outcomes indicate that HiG has a good EMS performance supported by annual environmental audits, regular policy revision and the attempts to minimize non-conformities. Conversely, when the authors pointed at student awareness, it shows that students have insufficient environmental knowledge. Moreover, some students have lower environmental awareness and act in a less ecological friendly way. Nevertheless, a knowledge problem was also found among several university staffs. This is because of the lack of communication about environmental issues inside the staffs community and lack of environmental education for students.

Whatever the university situation is, there are some groups of staff and students eager to develop themselves and their university. This point of strength could be the best driving force. It can push the university forward until the university reaches sustainable development and it brings the aware graduates into society.

Kim, Kyou Woong. "Exploiting Cyclostationarity for Radio Environmental Awareness in Cognitive Radios." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/27928.

Full text
Abstract:
The tremendous ongoing growth of wireless digital communications has raised spectrum shortage and security issues. In particular, the need for new spectrum is the main obstacle in continuing this growth. Recent studies on radio spectrum usage have shown that pre-allocation of spectrum bands to specific wireless communication applications leads to poor utilization of those allocated bands. Therefore, research into new techniques for efficient spectrum utilization is being aggressively pursued by academia, industry, and government. Such research efforts have given birth to two concepts: Cognitive Radio (CR) and Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) network. CR is believed to be the key enabling technology for DSA network implementation. CR based DSA (cDSA) networks utilizes white spectrum for its operational frequency bands. White spectrum is the set of frequency bands which are unoccupied temporarily by the users having first rights to the spectrum (called primary users). The main goal of cDSA networks is to access of white spectrum. For proper access, CR nodes must identify the right cDSA network and the absence of primary users before initiating radio transmission. To solve the cDSA network access problem, methods are proposed to design unique second-order cyclic features using Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) pilots. By generating distinct OFDM pilot patterns and measuring spectral correlation characteristics of the cyclostationary OFDM signal, CR nodes can detect and uniquely identify cDSA networks. For this purpose, the second-order cyclic features of OFDM pilots are investigated analytically and through computer simulation. Based on analysis results, a general formula for estimating the dominant cycle frequencies is developed. This general formula is used extensively in cDSA network identification and OFDM signal detection, as well as pilot pattern estimation. CR spectrum awareness capability can be enhanced when it can classify the modulation type of incoming signals at low and varying signal-to-noise ratio. Signal classification allows CR to select a suitable demodulation process at the receiver and to establish a communication link. For this purpose, a threshold-based technique is proposed which utilizes cycle-frequency domain profile for signal detection and feature extraction. Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) are proposed for the signal classifier. The spectrum awareness capability of CR can be undermined by spoofing radio nodes. Automatic identification of malicious or malfunctioning radio signal transmitters is a major concern for CR information assurance. To minimize the threat from spoofing radio devices, radio signal fingerprinting using second-order cyclic features is proposed as an approach for Specific Emitter Identification (SEI). The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated through the identification of IEEE 802.11a/g OFDM signals from different Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) card manufactures using HMMs.

Abstract:
Sustainable tourism requires accommodation businesses to balance economic, environmental and social issues, taking into account the needs of current and future generations. However, despite the ever E increasing attention on sustainable tourism and the acknowledgement of the impacts of tourism on the environment, this form of tourism only represents a minor share of all tourism. Ecotourism forms part of sustainable tourism and is one of the most common forms of commercially focused wildlife management on privately owned land. Luxury safari lodges are expected to provide a high level of hospitality , luxurious facilities and exquisite cui sine . Consequently, these lodges consume large quantities of resources and are reliant on the adequate supply of water and energy. Safari lodges are also reliant on the natural environment to attract guests. Therefore it is prudent of these businesses to conserve and protect water, energy and ecological resources to ensure the perpetuity of the lodge. Furthermore, both the environment and society benefit from the conservation of these resources. This study investigates the awareness of sustainable tourism and environmental practices in luxury safari lodges. Twenty-five luxury safari lodges in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa were approached and a total of six safari lodges participated in an email E based questionnaire and one took part in semi -structured interviews. The research reveals that luxury safari lodges are aware of sustainable tourism and its importance. In addition, they involved in a number of environmental activities in order to achieve sustainability. The environment is emphasized as central to sustainable tourism, stemming from the fact that these lodges rely on the natural environment to attract guests. Balancing financial commitments to sustainability was found to have an impact on certain aspects of the luxury safari lodges attitudes and actions. The research indicated two key directions to pursue to sustain environmental activities in the luxury safari lodge industry. Firstly, education and awareness of staff and guests is acknowledged as central to supporting and achieving sustainability in luxury safari lodges. Secondly, lodges affiliated with voluntary initiatives such as FTT and Greenleaf are audited regularly to ensure a specific standard has been achieved, thus maintaining sustainable best practices in the lodges. The research concluded that the motivation for achieving sustainable tourism within luxury safari lodges can be seen as driven by: the need to preserve the natural environment, the opportunity to reduce operating costs (increase profitability) and the growing demand for environmentally friendly safari lodges.

Modern reconfigurable digital designs are using new architectures which can utilize environmental awareness to increase the system's tolerance to faults caused by radiation strikes. These digital fabrics are capable of reprogramming circuitry based on information provided to the system by an external source. In this thesis the design, modeling, and characterization of a radiation sensor is presented. This radiation sensor is coupled with an FPGA based reprogrammable computer system to provide spatial information about radiation events to the computer. The radiation sensor uses a PN junction as its fundamental sensing element. As a high energy radiation particle passes through the sensor, the substrate is ionized (electron-hole-pairs are generated). The internal electric field of the PN junction separates these charge carriers which are then collected on the orthogonally placed electrodes on the top and bottom of the sensor. This XY grid of electrodes provides the spatial location of an ionizing radiation strike. These coordinates are then input into the computer system which analyzes the location and reconfigures the system to avoid the potentially damaged circuitry located at the strike coordinates. A high speed event detector is also implemented in the FPGA to aide in the sampling and storing of the incoming radiation strikes. This event detector samples the incoming data at a high rate to ensure that even fast output pulses are detected by the computer system. A model was developed to predict the response of this radiation sensor for a given radiation source. This model was used to predict the signals out of the top and bottom electrodes on the radiation sensor. Extensive testing was then performed using a high energy radiation source. The sensor was able to determine the location of the radiation strike and relay this information to the computer system. The model was also capable of predicting the sensor response with the desired degree of accuracy.

The present thesis aims at comprehending the young's formation of awareness and attitudes towards environmental issues, stressing the parents' role. This work uses the microdata for PISA Portugal 2015, comprehending 4 questionnaires addressed to: students (N=7325) and respective parents, schools and teachers. The empirical analysis takes advantage of comparable questions in the students' and parents' questionnaires. The results, obtained via linear models and correlation analyses, show a higher transmission of parental preferences in the attitudinal component than in the awareness aspects. Student and parental characteristics show a major role performed by these agents, as opposed to the lack of significance showed for school and teacher characteristics. Student's enjoyment of learning science and a higher expected future educational level are predictors that affect positively environmental awareness and attitudes. It is furtherly suggested that girls correlate heavier with their parents than boys and mothers correlate heavier with their children than fathers. As for household characteristics the cultural resources and books plays a part, especially concerning female students. For male students, the household income and other materialistic resources appear to have a higher importance in both awareness and attitudes. The parents' educational attainments only favour the students' awareness not showing significance for the attitudes.

Abstract:
This project employs participatory action research methods in efforts to create a community specific environmental curriculum for the high school age youth at the only Jain faith community in the North Texas region. Aligned with the community’s goals, the youth led in deciding, creating, and carrying out initiatives that were aimed at increasing the level of awareness about environmental issues amongst community members. The research done by the youth aimed at looking at environmental issues through the lens of Jain doctrine. The final creation of a curriculum as a living document to be used by the youth in efforts to promote critical thinking skills and class discussion continues the participatory model. The curriculum encourages experiential and interpretative learning, which grants ownership of the topics to the youth themselves and ultimately empowering them to learn more and spread the importance of being environmentally friendly.

Abstract:
The central purpose of this thesis is to explore broader issues related to Chinese environmental awareness through examining a new form of tourism - urban (eco)tourism in China. More specifically, the thesis focuses on investigating two parallel themes: Chinese (eco)tourists’ attitudes towards nature/the environment and how political-economic conditions shape environmental practices as exemplified by two selected case studies. This is undertaken through examining two very different contemporary experiences of urban (eco)tourism: Shen Zhen Wetland Park and Hong Kong Wetland Park, and by applying three different conceptual approaches: Chinese cultural/religious influences on nature (’Chinese Philosophy’), Western approaches to modernity (Disneyisation and Ecological Modernisation). Disneyisation, Ecological Modernisation and ’Chinese’ models of nature are not usually associated with research on environmental awareness. Combining these approaches suggests that research can stimulate researchers and policy professionals to explore the value of combining and comparing different conceptual models of nature and the environment, to better understand underlying forces of environment-related behaviour and practices.

Abstract:
Green marketing is, in a sense, an oxymoron in that it merges the seemingly contradictory concepts of marketing, which focuses on facilitating and encouraging consumption, and environmental concern, which focuses on environmental conservation. Green advertising represents an important marketing tool for communicating an organisation’s green image and is the driving force behind fostering environmental awareness and environmentally friendly behaviour. As with any type of advertising, an important determinant of the success of green advertising is consumers‟ attitudes towards green advertising and corresponding environmental concerns and behaviour. The last decade has shown a staggering number of marketers targeting the green segment of the population with green advertising, with increasing green advertisements manufacturers are informing their customers about the pro-environmental characteristics of their products and services. Green advertising is an essential tool in an organisation’s overall environmental marketing strategy; one which possibly leads to achieving superior performance and assists in creating a sustainable competitive edge. An in-depth understanding of the relevant consumer behavioural aspects of a target market is tantamount to formulating successful marketing strategies. This holds true with the formulating of green marketing advertising strategies, which aim at encouraging consumption in an environmentally sustainable manner. There is a dearth of published literature on the South African Generation Y‟s consumer behaviour in general and none that specifically focuses on the environmental concern, attitudes towards green advertising and environmental behaviour of the significantly sized black Generation Y cohort. The Generation Y cohort is defined as individuals born between 1986 and 2005. In terms of South Africa, Generation Y individuals accounted for 40 percent of the South African population, with black Generation Y individuals making up 84 percent of this generational cohort. In addition, the black Generation Y cohort of South Africa makes up approximately 33 percent of the whole population, resulting in a highly attractive market segment. Individuals attaining tertiary qualifications are of particular interest to marketers since they are likely to enjoy higher earnings and a higher social status, which together is likely to make them opinion leaders amongst their peers. The primary objective of this study was to investigate black Generation Y students‟ environmental concern, attitudes towards green advertising and environmental behaviour within the South African context. The target population of the study was defined as full-time black Generation Y students, aged between 18-24 years, enrolled at South African registered public higher education institutions (HEIs). The sampling frame comprised the 23 registered South African public HEIs. Using a judgement sampling method, this was narrowed down to four HEIs located in the Gauteng Province - two of which are country-based and two of which are city-based. For this study, a convenience sample of 400 full-time black Generation Y students who were enrolled at these four South African HEIs during 2012 was drawn. The relevant primary data was obtained using a self-administered questionnaire. Lecturers at each of the four HEIs were contacted and requested to distribute the questionnaire to their students either during class or after class. The self-administered questionnaire was hand delivered to these lecturers. The questionnaire requested respondents to indicate on a five-point Likert scale the extent of their agreement/disagreement with items designed to measure their environmental concerns, their attitudes towards green advertising as well as their current environmental behaviour patterns. In addition, the students were asked to provide certain demographic data. The findings of this study indicate that South African black Generation Y students are environmentally concerned, have a positive attitude towards green advertising and report behaving in a pro-environmental manner. Previous research found gender to be a significant factor in displaying concerns for the environment. However, this study determined that gender played no significant role towards the black South African Generation Y cohort environmental concerns and attitudes. Similarly, the study found no significant difference between black Generation Y students who were based at city HEIs and black Generation Y students who were based at countryside HEIs. Insights gained from this study will help both marketing academics and practitioners understand current black Generation Y consumer attitudes towards environmental concerns, green advertising attitudes and the significance of their pro-environmental behaviour.

Abstract:
Teaching preschool children about the environment. A comparative study of how two preschools work with environmental issues. My investigations are based on qualitative interviews and observations carried out at two preschools, one of which has a nature and environment profile while the other works in traditional ways with these questions. I sought to explore the ways in which pedagogues in each preschool raise environmental awareness and, more generally, awaken an interest in nature in the children. The consequences of methodological similarities and differences will be considered. This term paper concludes that the difference between an environmental profile preschool and a traditional preschool working on environmental awareness is not large. The knowledge gained by children in the latter preschool surpassed that gained in the former. Another difference was the greater commitment shown by pedagogues working in the traditional preschool. The big difference had to do with the fact that in the traditional preschool more time was spent in talking about environmental issues that in the profile school.

Dickey, Kerri A. "Longitudinal Awareness: A Study of Vulnerability to Flooding in Polk County, Iowa." Scholar Commons, 2017. http://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/6828.

Full text
Abstract:
Flooding has become a problem of national proportion and many scholars have started to take note of the human impacts in this area. This study will focus on the social vulnerability framework in tandem with the environmental justice theoretical frameworks being applied to Polk County Iowa so that information can be added to the body of works within a Midwestern U.S. context. This research will contribute to the current geographical knowledge in natural hazards, environmental justice, and vulnerability to flood hazards. Taking into consideration the scarcity of county or sub-county studies in the Midwest U.S. measuring spatial tendencies in hazards vulnerability, this thesis is fitting. This study examines Polk County Iowa for social vulnerability factors present today to the natural disaster of flooding and then looks longitudinally back to 1990 to see if similar individual variables were also prominent historically. This study utilizes block group census level data and creates from it a social vulnerability index (SoVI) following Cutter et al. (2003). The study then used FEMA flood risk level boundaries and the 100-year floodplain to create a comparison of vulnerability of higher flood risk areas and lower risk areas to see if exposure to flood prone areas coincides with an increase or decrease in social vulnerability. Findings of statistical tests and the bivariate choropleth map of the study area suggest that Polk County exhibits a spatial vulnerability paradox, where the persons most socially vulnerable do not necessarily always preside in the source area for flooding. Interestingly enough the study suggests that risk capable and risk resilient populations live in some of the most physically risky places. An examination of specific individual vulnerability factors from the present and historically in 1990 give the same picture of spatial paradoxical vulnerability, leading many variables to be inconclusive. However, four variables (QFAM, QMOBILE, QEXTRACT, and AVGTRVL) did show correlation to prolonged historical disenfranchisement within the flood boundaries. It is crucial to take this information and widen the spatial location of risk from the present immobile boundary set forth and perpetuated by government entities, to a realistic flexible range of spatial locations that consider historical cultural forces and formulate new mitigation policies from these understandings. This thesis further highlights the need to use multiple interdisciplinary methods to understand what is happening within our space, place, and time. This thesis adds to the ever-growing literature in social vulnerability, and environmental justice but in a U.S. Midwestern context instead of a U.S. coastal context to a flood hazard situation.

Abstract:
The United Nations launched their 'Decade for Sustainable Development', which directly relates to Education for Sustainable Development, a new environmental management system for schools. The formal education process provides a key testing ground for the development of new Infori-nation and Communication Technology (ICT) tools designed to raise environmental awareness. Several types of purpose designed ICT tool are available, but there is a distinct lack of empirical research into their design and effectiveness. Strategic objectives performance takes the central role in the work reported here. A number of strategic objectives of the use of ICT tools were identified; learning, education, trust, motivation, commitment, inclusion, justice and openness. A number of prc-existing software platforms, each specifically designed to provide environmental education and to raise awareness specifically focussing on issues surrounding water were selected and forinally evaluated under controlled conditions with small groups of evaluators. The respondents involved in this investigation included the developers of the tools thernselves, school and postgraduate students (representing users) and experts from academia and industry. The developers of the tools were asked which strategic objectives they considered when they designed their respective tools and the degree to which their tools promoted the strategic objectives was tested in evaluation sessions involving the users. The results from the evaluation sessions involving the users and the experts revealed that strategic objectives such as learning, education, trust and openness were promoted by the tools to some degree, whilst objectives such as justice, motivation and inclusion were promoted to a lesser degree. Whilst it is possible that the tools evaluated simply do not promote the objectives listed, the evaluation methodology adopted in this investigation may go some way to explaining why only certain strategic objectives were found to be promoted. A discussion into the possible methods by which the presence of these strategic objectives could be determined is presented in the concluding chapters of the thesis.

Meris, Ronald G. "Application of a Plume Model for Decision Makers' Situation Awareness during an Outdoor Airborne HAZMAT Release." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3631580.

Abstract:

In a large-scale outdoor, airborne, hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incident, such as ruptured chlorine rail cars during a train derailment, the local Incident Commanders and HAZMAT emergency responders must obtain accurate information quickly to assess the situation and act promptly and appropriately. HAZMAT responders must have a clear understanding of key information and how to integrate it into timely and effective decisions for action planning. This study examined the use of HAZMAT plume modeling as a decision support tool during incident action planning in this type of extreme HAZMAT incident. The concept of Situation Awareness as presented by Endsley's dynamic situation awareness model contains three levels: perception, comprehension and projection. It was used to examine the actions of incident managers related to adequate data acquisition, current situational understanding, and accurate situation projection. Scientists and engineers have created software to simulate and predict HAZMAT plume behavior, the projected hazard impact areas, and the associated health effects. Incorporating the use of HAZMAT plume projection modeling into an Incident Action Plan may be a complex process. The present analysis employed a mixed qualitative and quantitative methodological approach and examined the use and limitations of a "HAZMAT Plume Modeling Cycle" process that can be integrated into the incident action planning cycle. HAZMAT response experts were interviewed using a computer-based simulation. One of the research conclusions indicated the "HAZMAT Plume Modeling Cycle" is a critical function so that an individual/team can be tasked with continually updating the hazard plume model with evolving data, promoting more accurate situation awareness.

Abstract:
Environmental education plays an important role in the preservation and protection of biodiversity but also on the environment. It is for this purpose that the thesis aimed to assess the environmental knowledge and attitudes in school children in urban areas and those in rural areas in three regions of Senegal. This evaluation is focused on interviews with teachers and questionnaires administered to children. On the basis of 786 questionnaires collected in 19 schools including 7 in rural area (317 responding children) and 12 in urban areas (448 responding children), I found that children in rural area had higher environmental knowledge in comparison to those in urban areas, and it was also higher in boys than in girl with the same pattern in rural and urban areas. The level of environmental knowledge did not depend on the age of responding children. Concerning environmental attitudes, children expressed mostly similar attitudes in rural and urban areas and these were mostly negative towards environment. Regarding such results, it is recommendable to address the environmental issues through environmental education programs in order to get better knowledge and to build pro-environmental attitudes. The informal environmental education programs can provide opportunities for schools to improve their knowledge, interests, motivation and encouraged to adopt new attitudes towards the environment. The environmental education increases with theoretical and practical experience.

Thesis, Linköpings universitet, Industriell Produktion, 2012. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:liu:diva-80969.

Full text
Abstract:
The Swedish company Kockums AB, at the forefront within maritime and naval technology, is in need of a tool, document, and/or method to include environmental aspects in their product development process. This is mainly because of additional requirements put on Kockums AB from their main customer. Ship recycling is the major issue that has to be addressed and included in Kockums AB’sworking procedures. Moreover, ship recycling is a pressing issue to handle due to horrible conditions in South Asian countries, where most ship dismantling is taking place. For these reasons, the objective of this M.Sc. thesis was to integrate environmental aspects in the product development process at Kockums AB by designing and proposing a way of implementing a tool, document, and/or method. Environmental product requirements that Kockums AB is demanded to fulfill mainly derives from customers, classification societies, laws and legislations, and themselves. The Hong Kong Convention has been adapted, in 2009, but is yet to enter into force. Ship recycling is covered by the convention, and an ‘Inventory of Hazardous Materials’ has to be provided from the ship builder, and hence this is the main aspect for Kockums AB to consider. Naval ships are, however, excluded from the Hong Kong Convention. Kockums AB does not have a routine on how to handle environmental requirements nor are environmental aspects included in their product development process. Consequently, Kockums AB’senvironmental ambition should not be put too high and rather aim at follow laws. In an empiricalstudy, regarding environmental aspects at Kockums AB, difficulties were identified. Lack of environmental knowledge, communication problems, and misunderstandings regarding the ambiguous term environment showed to be most notable. The three most prominent success factors for asuccessful integration of ecodesign, from the conducted literature review and empirical findings, are education for employees, existence of an environmental champion, and top management support. A Long-term Environmental Action Plan (LEAP), which took the success factors into account and contains 18 Actions, was developed for Kockums AB, and is the ultimate result of this research. The LEAP was developed in accordance with ISO 14006, a new standard for incorporation of ecodesign in Environmental Management Systems, with the aim of reducing adverse environmental impactsthroughout a product’s lifecycle. Moreover, the proposed way of implementing the LEAP was based on a ”Plan, Do, Check, Act” methodology from Product-Oriented Environmental Management Systems (POEMS). POEMS focus on a product’s environmental efficiency throughout its lifecycle, by a systematic integration of ecodesign in the company’s strategies and practices, and hence continual improvements. This way of implementation should be familiar to Kockums AB because the company is certified according to ISO 14001, where continual improvement of environmental performance is a key factor. The proposed LEAP includes tools, documents, and methods that are to be used in daily work and product development at Kockums AB. It is a step towards environmentally conscious design and enhanced environmental knowledge at Kockums AB. Additionally, as a result of the LEAP, the expectation is that environmental conscious mindsets of employees arise.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between personal norms and pro environmental intentions of youth travelers in Sweden including the intention to involve in sustainable purchasing behaviors while travelling (IISPB), intention to involve in recycling activities while travelling (IIRA) and intention to preserve natural and local resources while travelling (IPNLR). Also the study aims to test the moderating impact that the environmental awareness and ascribed responsibility have on the relationship between personal norms and pro environmental intentions considered. Design/Methodology/Approach- The study distributed an online questionnaire among university students in Sweden employing non probability sampling methods of volunteering sampling and snowball sampling methods. Answers of 293 completed questionnaires were subjected to the analysis, employing structural equation modelling, muli group structural equation modelling. Findings – The results indicated positive and substantial relationships between personal norms and each pro environmental intention considered in the study (IISPB, IIRA & IPNLR). Both environmental awareness and ascribed responsibility could not be tested for its moderating influence on the relationship between personal norms and each pro environmental intention due to the existence of metric variance in the measurements. Practical Contribution –Considering the highly influential impact of personal norms on pro environmental intentions, the study proposes the destination marketing organizations across Sweden to address the moral obligations of young travellers to ensure environmentally friendly behaviors within their destinations. The study proposes to do this via implementing advertising and awareness campaigns, devised to activate the personal norms of young tourists. Value/Originality- This study contributes to the existing gap in tourism literature regarding the application of Norm Activation Model as a moderator model in pro environmental intentions of young travellers in Sweden.

Adabzadeh, Ali. "Consumer awareness of the effects of under-inflated vehicular tires on global warming in southern California." Thesis, California State University, Los Angeles, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1528239.

Full text
Abstract:

The primary and immediate objective of this educational intervention study is to raise consumer awareness of the impact of under-inflated tires on global warming. The short-term result of this would be the widespread maintenance of proper tire air pressure, the use of low-rolling resistance tires, and the inflation of tires with nitrogen instead of air, which could assist in the reduction of fuel use and resultant CO2 emissions. Such a reduction could have a significant short-term result of benefitting consumers economically and the world environmentally.

Utilizing a quasi-experimental design, a pamphlet and pre- and post-survey questionnaires were employed to collect data from a convenience sample of consumers (N=126). An educational pamphlet was prepared to increase consumer awareness about the importance of how properly inflated tires can be a factor in driver safety, fuel conservation, and the prevention of unnecessary increases in greenhouse gas emissions, which are among the major factors affecting global warming.

Data from the pre-intervention survey provides strong evidence that participants possess insufficient knowledge of general tire care, maintenance, performance and the impact of under-inflated tires on the environment in general and global warming in particular. Statistical analysis demonstrated significant change from pre- to postintervention surveys in the participants’ attitudes and knowledge regarding the maintenance of tire pressure and the impact of under-inflated tires on greenhouse gases and global warming.

The improvement in overall knowledge and attitudes demonstrated in the analysis between pre- and post-survey data indicates greater recognition by the participants that appropriate car care and tire maintenance are essential, and that for consumers, the acquisition and application of this knowledge can be powerful in improving the economy and environment. Suggestions for further study include development of consistent monitoring and data collection processes for use by facilities responsible for automobile care and the development of a broad-based, media-driven consumer education programs on the importance of the studied variables.

Gallagher, Michael Jerome. "The growth in environmental awareness and its implications for the National Health Service." Thesis, University of Salford, 2002. http://usir.salford.ac.uk/26683/.

Abstract:
The NHS is a large complex organisation employing almost one million people and with an annual revenue budget in 1999/2000 in excess of £40 billion. Responsible for a range of activities with the potential to cause environmental damage on a local, national and global scale, the NHS recognises its obligations to minimise the environmental impact of those activities. Although improving environmental performance is only one of the many issues and priorities which the NHS must address, it is considered particularly important for the following reasons: a. The NHS consumed approximately 1.6% of the total energy generated and energy consumption in English hospitals alone results in an annual emission of approximately 7.5m tonnes of CO2 b. NHS Trusts generate in the region of 100,000 tonnes of clinical waste each year c. In 1992, the NHS spent approximately £52m on water and sewage throughout England and Wales d. NHS Trusts spent in the region of £7 billion on purchasing goods and services in 2000. This thesis examines the growth of environmental awareness together with the adverse impact of modern living upon the environment, and particularly, the use of non-renewable resources. It reviews the systems available to assist organisations in managing their environmental performance and examines the limitations of the processes currently in use. The focal theory for the project involves an investigation into the integration of environmental management within the operational and strategic management of NHS Trusts. In particular, the study examines the political and cultural issues which prevent the NHS as a corporate body from improving its environmental performance. It considers the more centralised approach adopted by the UK Government since 1997 to the delivery of healthcare and the implications of this strategy on the environmental performance of the service. This includes the introduction of Control Assurance, a risk management system which requires all NHS organisations to focus on the range of issues including environmental performance. This centralised approach has been further reinforced with the introduction of a 15% energy reduction target for all healthcare organisations which must be achieved between 2000 and 2010. The project included a major case study which was undertaken between 1994 and 2000 the objective of which was to provide a detailed understanding of the approach adopted by one large acute hospital to environmental management. In addition, a national study involving 161 NHS Trusts was undertaken and the results analysed to provide quantifiable data in respect of a number of variables. The study involved a review of fourteen environmental parameters and in particular, focused on Trusts performance in eleven key areas. To further refine the data and to provide a more meaningful conclusion, a comparison was made between the environmental performance of those Trusts which had commenced the implementation of an environmental management system, with those that had not yet commenced the implementation process. Chapter ten evaluates the findings from the case study together with those of the national survey and draws comparisons between the results of the respective approaches. From an examination of the data, it is evident that there are significant similarities between the two studies and the conclusion reached following a detailed analysis included in

Abstract:
Considering the environmental problems that happen globally, environmental education was perceived in this study as an important key to deal with the problems. This study was carried out to support environmental education by exploring persuasive games to raise environmental awareness. Through a design science research (DSR) approach, EcoScout Game was designed as a mobile persuasive game for conveying some existing environmental issues to children. During the DSR, a playtest phase was conducted to evaluate the first level of EcoScout Game that contains persuasion goals to keep the environment clean and to dispose waste correctly. The playtest involved 10 participants age 4 to 6 years that provided various responses. Majority of the participants showed their interests to play the game. When the participants were playing the game, all of them understood that they must keep the environment clean. More than a half of the participants (60%) understood and motivated to follow the waste disposal rules. Several improvements for the game are proposed, especially to help children who are still not able to read textual labels and descriptions in the game. Further development and research are required to advance the game and to confirm its effectiveness in persuading children. However, this study showed a possibility to use persuasive games for raising environmental awareness among children in the context of environmental education. Finally, this study demonstrated a potential to apply DSR in persuasive game design.

Brikke, Sarah. "Young People and the Environment: Exploring Factors that Influence Young People's Environmentally Caring Behaviours in Indonesia." Thesis, Griffith University, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10072/365547.

Abstract:
Within the space of a few decades, young people's understandings and experiences of nature have changed radically. Today, many young people are aware of the global threats to the environment - but their physical contact, their intimacy with nature, is diminishing, leading it is argued to a "nature deficit disorder". In order to minimise the risk of nature deficit disorder, this study seeks to understand how behaviour change models, innovative environmental education approaches, and an ethic of care may influence young people's environmentally caring behaviours. The main research question is: What are the factors that influence young people's environmentally caring behaviours in Indonesia? This question is addressed through three sub-research questions: 1) What can we learn from behaviour change models about young people's environmentally caring behaviours?, 2) How do environmental education approaches influence young people's environmentally caring behaviours?, and 3) What added value do ethic of care principles bring to better understanding young people's environmentally caring behaviour?

Abstract:
The use of persuasive technologies can induce changes in attitudes or behaviours, even in individuals that other strategies of persuasion can not reach effectively. In addition, this type of technology can be applied in numerous areas such as health, education, finance, e-business, among others. Although persuasion can be seen as something negative, being used to serve the interests of the persuader rather than the interests of the persuaded, this work aims to achieve a common and shared goal: to change people's behaviour towards the environment. A significant part of the population is still not aware of the sustainability problems that our planet is facing, so it is important to inform people about the theme while persuading them to change their behaviour and acquire proenvironmental attitudes. In this dissertation, work was conducted to alert citizens to this issue in a fun and immersive way using mobile devices, more specifically smartphones, and augmented reality technology that was used to create an environmental scanner. This scanner provided the user with informative insight about the surrounding environment, while highlighting the environmental threats. In addition to augmented reality, pro-environmental actions were positively reinforced using a reward system and a virtual character that interacted and motivated the user. A form of rapid spread through social networks was also created, allowing the persuasive effect to quickly reach a large number of users. Finally was performed a study to assess the success of the work done in changing behaviour towards environmental issues, and to study the influence of augmented reality and positive reinforcement in the changing of behaviours and acquisition of pro-environmental attitudes.

Pienaar, Melanie. "The merit of environmental impact assessment for civil engineers in South Africa." Thesis, North-West University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/9817.

Abstract:
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been successfully adopted in South Africa in line with international trends. A number of international scholars found that EIA offers distinct advantages to a proposed project (Bartik, 1988; Porter & van der Linde, 1995; Annandale & Taplin, 2003). The widespread successful adoption of EIA could be an indication that the benefits of conducting EIAs outweigh the potential economic loss due to delays and costs related to the EIA. However, there are negative perceptions about EIA and its influence on development. But the question is whether South African engineers are experiencing these benefits at project level? South African civil engineers are faced with the legislative requirements of EIAs on a daily basis. Through a survey of professionally registered civil engineers this research examined the merits that EIA has for civil engineers. It was found that EIA helps engineers to ensure that they have all the legal aspects of the development in place before the development starts. Furthermore EIA creates the opportunity for the engineers to design out the most significant adverse environmental impacts. It was found that since the implementation of EIA engineers are observing a shift towards more environmentally sound design alternatives. Therefore, if the EIA process is influencing engineers to review their designs from an environmental point of view, it could significantly minimise environmental impacts. According to engineers it was found that, EIA is assisting them in taking all the potential impacts of a new development into account during the design process. The engineering design normally determines the true environmental impact of a development. According to the respondents, the majority were aware of projects where the design was changed as a result of potential impacts highlighted by the EIA. It was found that for the majority of the respondents the environmental review of the design was a key component of the design process. According to the engineers that took part in the survey, they were aware of projects where the EIA improved the sustainability of the design by effecting a change to the design or to the construction materials. Since the implementation of EIA they have become more aware of, not only the life cycle, but also the sustainability of the development. EIA is therefore creating awareness about sustainability in the engineering fraternity. The engineers experienced EIA as a useful tool for improving the sustainability of the design. However, it was found that EIA also caused a significant delay in the majority of the projects where the respondents were involved. The delays were sometimes so severe that it jeopardised the economic feasibility of the projects in question. According to the respondents, the delays are mainly due to slow decision making by the competent authority. Due to this slow decision making process, the engineers blame the competent authority if they start with the construction of the project before authorisation. However, in spite of these delays, the engineers are still of the opinion that EIA is doing more good to the environment than harm to the economy. It was found that what the majority of the engineers knew about the EIA process was what they had learned from their own experience. They agreed that there was very little focus on environmental sustainability during their undergraduate studies and that EIA training during their undergraduate study would have been useful. But in spite of this, the majority of respondents did not complete any environmental short courses or post graduate studies. It was found that EIA does in fact have a positive influence on the work of civil engineers and that they experience these benefits at project level. The engineers have a positive attitude towards EIA and it is increasingly influencing their work positively.
