Zweifel, Aara. "Spiralist Interconnection and Environmental Consciousness in Caribbean Literature." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/20511.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation addresses the politics of interrelation between living beings and the natural world within Caribbean literature, and the underlying dangers inherent in modes of existence that deny such interrelation. Spiralism is a chaotic and pluralist literary movement emerging from Haiti in the 1960s, and this project features René Philoctète’s Spiralist novel Le Peuple des terres mêlées (1989) as its literary center, joined with two other Caribbean novels: Jacques Roumain’s Gouverneurs de la rosée (1944), and Mayra Montero’s Tú, la oscuridad (1995). In my comparative reading of these novels, I argue that their representations of environmental consciousness, social collaboration, and all-inclusive modes of interacting with the natural world provide models of co-existence in the context of the many socio-environmental injustices that threaten the continuation of many life forms on Earth, including humans. These novels evoke empathy and imagination, and add vital perspectives to the understudied field of environmentally conscious literature. Each of these three novels emotionally engages and reconnects humans as members of ecosystems – a move often lacking in the objective presentation of environmental studies. Given that the Earth is our only home, the continued ecological devastation caused by the human species increasingly deserves our full attention. I argue that the all-inclusive Spiralist imaginary and the related literatures are apt ideological tools to help address the cognitive dissonance currently preventing sufficient social change.

Wilson, Mark. "The British environmental movement : the development of an environmental consciousness and environmental activism, 1945-1975." Thesis, Northumbria University, 2014. http://nrl.northumbria.ac.uk/21603/.

Full text
Abstract:
This work investigates the development of an environmental consciousness and environmental activism in Britain, 1945-1975. The 1970s have been described as ‘the decade of the environment’ and was the period when the modern environmental movement emerged. In this thesis, the environmental movement is considered to be a broad network of individuals and pressure groups engaging in collective action with shared environmental beliefs. Much of the work on the movement has ignored or played down the importance of the post-war period on its development. This project challenges that, dealing less with the movement itself and more with the developments which led to its emergence: through analysing events like the great London smog of 1952 and the Torrey Canyon oil spill of 1967, as well as through television programmes, this thesis traces the post-war influences of the movement and the growth of environmental awareness. Environmental pressure groups form part of the movement and a number of them are studied here, such as the Newcastle-based group Save Our City from Environmental Mess and the London-based group Commitment, WWF, Friends of the Earth and the National Smoke Abatement Society. From analysing the resources of these groups and the political processes within which they appear (resource mobilisation theory and political process theory) a better understanding is made about their successes, failures and how they fed into a growing environmental awareness. Television programmes from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s – notably natural history programmes such as Look, Zoo Quest, Doctor Who and Doomwatch – also helped an environmental consciousness develop. In marrying together these different issues, this work provides an original contribution to knowledge, and assesses some of the influences which led to the environmental movement emerging in 1970s Britain.

Bohlen, G. M. "Environmental consciousness : the construct and its application in an industrial setting." Thesis, Swansea University, 1994. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.636116.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is comprised of two distinct components. The first is a 'theoretical' component, which explores the nature of the latent construct of environmental consciousness as it applies to the UK consumer. Specifically, using established procedures from the measure development literature, a total of five instruments were devised from extensive qualitative and quantitative research, capturing individual's knowledge, attitudes and behaviour related to the environment. The psychometric properties of dimensionality, reliability and validity were confirmed through rigorous statistical assessment on data obtained from a mail survey of the general public, which achieved a sample of 1,697 respondents throughout the UK. Using the five developed scales, an investigation of the value of socio-demographic characteristics for profiling the environmentally conscious members of the population was undertaken. The results suggested that there is no typical green consumer in terms of such characteristics. The second component of the investigation is an 'applied' component, which investigates public perceptions of key environmental issues in the freight transportation industry. Here, the nature of public concern about the environmental effects of freight transportation was explored and, again using the measure development framework, comparative instruments capturing perceptions of road and rail freight transport were devised. Using the latter scales, an assessment of the utility of segmentation variables (situational, socio-demographic and environment-related) for profiling population members according to their concerns about freight nuisances was carried out. Finally, perceptions of possible action strategies to reduce the environmental disbenefits of freight transportation were addressed. The thesis is concluded with a discussion of theoretical and managerial implications in the study of environment-related issues and a number of suggestions for future research are outlined.

Jacob, Sarah. "Imagining Equality, Shifting Human Consciousness Toward Ecological Sustainability." FIU Digital Commons, 2012. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/724.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis explored the idea that inequality is a human-made perspective that has been informed concurrently through social and metaphysical structures. My intent has been to show how inequality as a learned man-made system of consciousness has played a pivotal role in justifying the exploitation of other cultures and the environment in the name of progress, advancement and human destiny. I have explored the idea that anthropocentrism and ethno-centric patriarchy has been woven so deeply into the fabric of modern perception that we are largely unconscious of its existence, even while we reap the results in both environmental and social degradation. My thesis has argued that a metaphysics, which supports equality, would result in a different value system that would prioritize diversity of life above and beyond human advancement, and emphasize cross-species interconnectedness thereby reducing the risk of exploitation inherent in the existing globally driven capitalist system.

Osuteye, Emmanuel Nii Noi. "Environmentalism in Ghana : the rise of environmental consciousness and movements for nature protection." Thesis, University of Kent, 2015. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/47995/.

Full text
Abstract:
The modern wave of environmentalism that swept most of the Western world since the 1960s, has generated considerable academic interest and has been widely documented. However there are apparent gaps in the knowledge, understanding and academic coverage of the phenomenon in the developing world, particularly in Africa. This thesis is an empirical exploration into the nature of environmentalism in Ghana, West Africa dwelling on the phenomena of environmental consciousness and movement activity. It identifies the presence of a small yet viable indigenous environmental movement. The movement is most visible through the partnering and collective networking activities of small, institutionalized local organizations that came together to form coalitions, share resources and work together on broad thematic issues that were of common concern.

Zelle, Carsten F. "Why is there no Green Party in America?: Environmental politics and environmental consciousness in the United States and West Germany." Thesis, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1989. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/52094.

Full text
Abstract:
The present paper attempts to explain the absence of a Green Party in America by means of comparison with the country that gave birth to the most successful Green Party so far: West Germany. In the first section it will be shown, that neither the electoral system nor other legal barriers prevent new parties from emerging in the United States. Then, the two countries will be examined from two different perspectives. First, through comparison of the politics of environmental protection it will be shown how a dialogue between the state and interest groups could be established in America, while it could not in Germany. The conclusion will be drawn that different opportunity structures define different incentives to founding a Green Party. From this finding the hypothesis will be developed that the conflictual environmental politics in Germany caused environmental concern to merge with other New Politics concerns and visions of a new state. It is from this ideology that the Green Party drew its electoral success. Due to aggregation of the environmental issue in institutional politics, this potential Green electorate did not emerge in the United States. The hypothesis will be tested empirically using survey data. Three operationalizations of the Green ideology will be employed: postmaterialism, the New Environmental Paradigm, and support for protest movements. The results deliver strong support for the hypothesis. The electoral resources for an American Green Party are weak.

Reddy, Colleen. "Ecological consciousness in modern Australian poetry." Thesis, Queensland University of Technology, 1998.

Find full text
Abstract:
One of the most significant issues confronting humanity as the twentieth century draws to a close is that concerning environmental degradation. This study posits the dual notion that at the centre of any movement to protect the earth from further degradation there must be a change in the predominant anthropocentric worldview, and that there is a role for poets to help bring about such change by writing ecologically-conscious poetry. The study explains what is meant by ecological consciousness as distinct from a conservation or environmental ethic. There follows a brief discussion of Deep Ecology (the philosophical perspective which, along with others, critiques human domination of nature) and a survey of relevant literature. The growth of an Australian poetic and the concomitant development of an Australian relationship with the land are also surveyed. Then, through a process of close reading, comparative analysis and discourse, the work of a number of poets (both indigenous and non-indigenous) is considered for its ecological awareness. The study highlights some pivotal ideas for the development of a new worldview: these are the development of a non-anthropocentric perspective of nature similar to that embraced by adherents of Deep Ecology; acceptance of the notion that nature is ambivalent (that the cycle of life is also a cycle of death and decay); and the possible use of indigenous people's deeply ecological relationship with the land as a basic model on which to build a new worldview. The study contends that only poetry which is grounded in ecocentrism, rather than anthropocentrism, can claim to be ecologically-conscious. It concludes by reaffirming the need for poets to encourage a change in the prevailing anthropocentric worldview by adopting a deeply-ecological focus on nature in some of their poetry.

Estrada, Alvarez Laura Marcela. "Developing ecological identities and environmental consciousness : study of children's understandings and attitudes about nature during a 10-month environmental education program." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/31615.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis investigates children's perceptions of the natural world, and how their experience with one environmental education program has shaped their ecological identity and environmental consciousness. In order to examine children's understandings and attitudes about nature and the environment, I became a participant researcher in the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project (ILLP) at the UBC Farm during the 2005-2006 school year. The age of the children in this study was 9-10 years old. I employed a qualitative approach based on naturalistic inquiry and interpretation that aims to understand the context of lived experience. After the program finished, I chose to do an in-depth analysis of six children's experiences with ILLP at the UBC Farm based on semi-structured interviews collected. These interviews were complemented by recorded observations of particular activities at the farm, alongside my informal researcher journal. The value and significance of this study lies in the insights that the children's stories provide, and the many possibilities they reveal for educators interested in Education for Environmental Sustainability. My findings suggest that the students' experiences with the ILLP deepened their understandings about nature, and informed their attitudes about environmental sustainability. The study provides evidence that engaging the child in a local, place-based educational setting enables him/her to develop a stronger sense of place and nourish a strong connection to nature. The children developed more complex understandings of the environment and an empathic and compassionate relationship to the land and the people with whom they worked. They came to understand the importance of farms and local, organic food production through their experiences working with soil and cultivation. Their concern for the environment and their sense of responsibility toward taking care of it also grew stronger. The stories of these six children showed the importance of integrating emotions, understandings and practical skill development through experience with hands-on learning in the outdoors. The thesis offers an argument for the re-conceptualization of the ways we teach and learn about the Earth, and highlights programs like the ILLP, and places like the UBC Farm, as educational environments in which we are able promote education for environmental sustainability. It also provides examples of effective educational tools (such as Earth Literacy) that can help educators, parents and community members to enhance the development of children's ecological identity and environmental consciousness.

Kruyswijk, Renske. "Socio–environmental factors, objectified body consciousness and drive for muscularity in undergraduate men / Renske Kruyswijk." Thesis, North-West University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4857.

Full text
Abstract:
The display of the male body has recently become a common phenomenon in Western culture. The objectification of men is a new theoretical concept that originates from the more familiar concept of the perceived objectification, observation and evaluation of the female body (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). McKinley (as cited in Soban, 2006) terms this concept Objectified Body Consciousness (OBC). Past studies confirm that the concept of OBC may also be successfully applied to males (Grieve & Helmick, 2008; Tiggemann & Kuring, 2004), especially in relation to current cultural expectations for the male body (Grieve & Helmick, 2008; Soban, 2006). At an extreme level internalisation of the mesomorphic body shape as body ideal may lead to a Drive for Muscularity (DM; Grieve, 2007). Grieve and Helmick (2008) indicate that males who score high on objectification measures show higher incidences of DM. According to the socio–environmental theories of Grieve (2007) and McCabe and Ricciardelli (2004) males experience significant social pressures to achieve the muscular ideal. There is a scarcity of literature concerning body–image concerns and the muscular ideal within the South African male undergraduate population. This research was therefore exploratory in nature and aimed to determine whether undergraduate men with high levels of OBC differ significantly in DM from undergraduate men with low levels of OBC. In addition, the study investigated the existence of a correlation between OBC and DM and whether undergraduate men differ in DM in accordance with exposure to certain socio–environmental factors. The quantitative study employed a survey design (Mouton, 2001) and used the Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (OBCS; McKinley & Hyde, 1996) and the Drive for Muscularity Scale (DMS; McCreary & Sasse, 2000). A convenience sample of 278 undergraduate males (mean age = 19 years) was selected based on availability and readiness to partake in the study (Field, 2005). Participants were all males aged between 18 and 20 and residing on the North–West University Potchefstroom Campus. Results indicate that undergraduate men with either elevated or low levels of OBC do not differ in terms of their DM. No correlation exists between OBC and DM. A group of undergraduate men who read fitness and health–related magazines, participate in sport, exercise regularly and have used steroids and supplements in the past year was identified. This group presented with high incidences of Muscle Development Behaviour suggesting that they may be at risk of internalising an attitude of increasing muscularity that may result in DM.

Long-time institutional and socioeconomic segmentations make rural China become a distinctive society from the urban China. The remarkable rural and urban division in China supplies us a good context to explore the formation and diverse social facets of environmental consciousness. This study aims to clarify the specific structure and formation mechanism of environmental consciousness under the different social backgrounds of rural and urban China based on the statistical results derived from survey data. Three dimensions of environmental consciousness and an integrated theoretical framework which involves both social structural and social psychological variables are proposed. Based on the proposed theoretical framework and examined data analyses, the inner causes and externally influencing factors of environmental consciousness were clarified.

Munger, Michael. "Ten Years of Winter: The Cold Decade and Environmental Consciousness in the Early 19th Century." Thesis, University of Oregon, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/1794/22676.

Full text
Abstract:
Two volcanic eruptions in 1809 and 1815 shrouded the earth in sulfur dioxide and triggered a series of weather and climate anomalies manifesting themselves between 1810 and 1819, a period that scientists have termed the “Cold Decade.” People who lived during the Cold Decade appreciated its anomalies through direct experience, and they employed a number of cognitive and analytical tools to try to construct the environmental worlds in which they lived. Environmental consciousness in the early 19th century commonly operated on two interrelated layers. The first was local, encompassing what people saw and experienced around them in their day-to-day lives, communities and localities, including the weather above them and outside their windows and the environmental characteristics they knew and felt they understood. The second was a broader layer, less known and often less knowable, encompassing the world outside of the local which included climate, the region, the planet, the heavens and the cosmos. Many people during the Cold Decade tried to explore and conquer that broader layer—to pull it closer, to define it, in some cases to tame or harness it—and people’s efforts to do this, while different depending on who they were and their life situations, had real-world consequences not merely in the Cold Decade itself but in the modernizing world that subsequently emerged. This dissertation examines Cold Decade environmental consciousness in five groups of people, most in the United States but some in Europe and other parts of the world: weather watchers, who kept detailed records on weather phenomena and used this data to discern patterns and theories of climate and weather prediction; diarists, ordinary people who recorded and remarked upon weather and climate phenomena in their journals, and who explored the broader layer by knowing weather and climate through personal experience; doctors, who leveraged weather and climate knowledge for the benefit of their patients; arguers, who conducted an intellectual debate about whether the Earth’s climate was growing warmer or colder; and travelers, people who sought to understand the broader layer through travel and geography.

Abstract:
This thesis examines how the type of waste recycled into textiles influences consumers’ contamination perceptions and other responses to sustainable clothing. Two experiments were conducted through online surveys to examine consumers’ responses to clothing made from materials like recycled coffee grounds and used plastic bottles. The use of recycled waste that is perceived to be more natural in manufacturing sustainable clothing reduces consumers’ negative contamination perception but does not increase the product’s attractiveness. To overcome contamination concerns, visual signalling of environmental consciousness through a logo on the clothing was investigated; however, this strategy should be undertaken with caution.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine through the lenses of an environmental historian the myths and the realities of soil exhaustion as this ecological process relates to the developing environmental ethics of tobacco farmers of Prince Edward County, Virginia, from 1850 to 1880. During the nineteenth century the tobacco farms of Southside Virginia experienced three phases in a century long process of ecological change that both influenced and were influenced by events that occurred in human history. The first phase coincides with the agricultural reform movements led by the planters of the late antebellum period. The second phase spans the Civil War years. The third phase begins with emancipation and Reconstruction and lasts until the end of the century when the cause of scientific agriculture was taken up by the agricultural reformers of the Progressive era. With each phase of ecological transition in conjunction with the transition from slave labor to wage labor, the relationship of white men and women and African American men and women to the rural landscape changed, thus creating a diverse, dynamic environmental ethic among the tobacco farmers of Prince Edward County, Virginia.

Abstract:
As we come to the end of the decade declared as United Nations Decade for Biodiversity 2011-2020, the impact humans are having our planet is clear. The current primary school children are the future decision makers, consumers and electors; therefore, they must be exposed to approaches that can assist development that is sustainable and that will prevent further degradation of our planet. A key way to achieve this is to transform the education current and future generations of children will receive. Education must address sustainable development to support the formation of responsible citizens, eager to actively engage in decision-making processes, environmental issues and societal matters. This can be assisted through a focus on a specific approach to Education for Sustainable Development, Biodiversity Education. To add to current research about this approach to ESD, I investigated the effect biodiversity education had on the sustainability consciousness of primary school children. I chose a qualitative method of data collection and analysis through focus group, semi-structured interviews with 5th class students. The results showed that the participants' sustainability awareness, regarding two of the three dimensions of sustainable development, was highly developed; the environmental dimension and the social dimension. There was less evidence of a consciousness for the economic dimension of SD. Therefore, biodiversity education had a positive influence on the participants' sustainability consciousness, making them more aware of sustainability issues and action-oriented to address these issues. However, they lacked one dimension of sustainability; therefore, their sustainability consciousness was not fully developed. Further research is needed to analysis and interpret the rationale as to why the economic dimension was less developed in these participants who attended a school that promotes biodiversity education.

Mchakulu, Mphatso Grace. "Rural Malawi households' environmental concern and consciousness about appropriate energy consumption practices amidst prevailing socio-economic conditions." Thesis, University of Pretoria, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/77847.

Full text
Abstract:
Malawi rural households’ dependence on fuelwood as a form of energy and as a source of income is contributing to alarming rates of deforestation in the country with detrimental consequences for climate change. This study targeted two of the rural areas in the southern part of Malawi, worst affected by climate change in recent years. The study aimed to generate empirical evidence of households’ energy consumption as a consequence of their way of life, and to gather evidence of their practical- and discursive consciousness concerning sustainable consumption practices and climate change as pre-requisites to facilitate and promote behavioural change. This research was conducted in three sequential phases. Phase 1 entailed a quantitative survey that involved 231 non randomly selected households from two rural areas, namely Balaka and Phalombe, in the south of Malawi. Questionnaires were completed in interview format, facilitated by trained research assistants following a pre-test in a nearby village. Phase 2 entailed focus group discussions with selected members from phase 1, to allow opportunity for discussion of main topics. Phase 3 involved the contribution of government officials and important role players to share their views about environmental issues, the issue of indiscriminate deforestation and use of energy sources by communities. Results show that biomass, including fuelwood, is still the predominant source of energy that most rural households use for diverse activities because other sources of energy are either inaccessible, or too expensive. Negative consequences such as respiratory problems caused by smoke inhalation are therefore common among females and children who are constantly exposed to toxic substances that are present in the air in their homes and immediate surrounds. The wood that is used, is mostly collected by females who perform this tedious task almost daily, collecting from nearby woodlots and forests, further aggravating deforestation. Households’ practical consciousness of sustainable energy consumption practices seem fairly good and their discursive consciousness, specifically with regard to the effect of climate change on rainfall patterns, micro- and macro factors that are responsible for climate change, are fairly impressive. This may be attributed to first-hand experience of the environmental challenges that they have experienced in recent years. Unfortunately, lack of knowledge concerning the implications of their behaviour in terms of the economic growth of the country, as well as nearby countries’ well-being, confirm the complexity of the phenomenon that may be difficult for them to comprehend. Concerted effort is thus required by local- and Governmental bodies to educate and empower communities socially and economically, also to supply safer sources of energy to replace what they are obliged to use presently. Rural households are struggling financially and will not be able to adapt their behavioral practices without the premeditated support of government and relevant role players who have an interest in environmental issues and who have the well-being of Malawi citizens at heart.

Parsons, Ashley. "Young Children and Nature: Outdoor Play and Development, Experiences Fostering Environmental Consciousness, And the Implications on Playground Design." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32281.

Full text
Abstract:
Play is a pivotal part of a child’s life. Outdoor play fosters opportunities for creativity, imagination, social connections, and learned behaviors. There are two types of outdoor playscapes: natural and constructed. Natural playscapes offer sensory stimulation and physical diversity which is critical for childhood experiences outdoors. Through careful design, constructed playscapes can be greened to simulate natural playscapes. Greening is the integration of natural elements and processes in a playscape. Children’s direct social and individual experiences in nature in early to middle childhood during the “developmental window of opportunity” between the ages of three and twelve years help shape their environmental identity and guide their environmental actions. Outdoor play in greened playscapes has a positive effect on children’s social development, motor skill development, attention, and activity level. It also can provide children with experiences in naturalistic landscapes which could impact their morals, values and actions. School yards have the ability to assist in teaching children and act as a safe-haven where parental concerns for safety and risk do not inhibit play. Understanding the relationships between play, experiences in nature, environmental identity, the health, learning, attention, and development benefits of outdoor play, and the evolution of playscape design, a series of guidelines can be created to provide better childhood playscapes.

Abstract:
The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development is approaching its end and it is important to investigate the effects of the efforts to implement education for sustainable development (ESD) nationally, before decisions on forthcoming efforts are made. There are few investigations of the effect of ESD implementation that take a broad approach. In order to measure the educational effects of ESD implementation broadly and inclusively, I introduce the concept of sustainability consciousness (SC), which will be operationalized into the research through a Likert scale questionnaire. This licentiate thesis contributes new knowledge on the implementation of ESD in the Swedish school system as reflected in young people’s SC. Two studies have been conducted. In the first study, I investigated the effects of ESD implementation by a comparison of SC between students in schools with an explicit ESD approach and control schools without an explicit approach. In the second study, I investigated whether the perceptual dip among adolescents found in the field of environmental education was also present in the economic and social dimensions of their SC in addition to the environmental one. The total sample included 2 413 students in 6th, 9th and 12th grades of the Swedish schools system. Results of the two studies indicate that the implementation of ESD in the Swedish compulsory school system does not seem to have been particularly successful as there are only small positive effects of an explicit ESD approach in 6th grade and even a small negative effect of an explicit ESD approach in the 9th grade. Furthermore, the dip in adolescent 9th graders’ SC is confirmed. This indicates that different age groups tackle the effects of the prevailing traditional sustainability teaching in different ways, which suggests that ESD in schools need to be adapted to different levels.

Moolla, Zainub. "South African consumers’ consciousness and concern about environmental and social issues in the local fashion industry when purchasing apparel." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/79620.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was inspired by an exceeding number of global calls for action to limit global warming and combat climate change. This research aimed to investigate South African consumers’ overall consciousness of sustainable production and consumption practices, related concern for the environment, and their willingness to purchase sustainably produced clothing merchandise. The researcher was particularly interested in identifying market segments (income groups) that are conscious, concerned and willing to purchase, as they could be key to drive a call for more responsible purchase and consumption behaviour in the future. The theoretical perspective that guided this research was Rational Choice Theory (RCT) that attended to consumers’ conscious deliberation of product alternatives based on specific product information. RCT was an effective solution to guide the differentiation of consumer decisions across different income levels for this research. A survey was carried out in a single electronic phase by distributing a structured, quantitative questionnaire. A total of 325 completed questionnaires were collected through non-probability sampling techniques and analysed thereafter. The findings indicated that South African consumers are only moderately conscious and concerned about environmental practices, and specifically that they are less concerned about the future implications of their clothing consumption behaviour. These findings reveal a need for concerted effort to inform and educate consumers as many prominent retailers have already begun to do. This study could not indisputably confirm that consumers are discouraged from choosing sustainably produced merchandise over similar, more affordable items. A pertinent outcome of this research is that in South Africa, income level does not seem to influence consumers’ consciousness and concern about the sustainability of clothing production practices, as well as their willingness to purchase sustainably produced clothing. The implication for retailers is that they can therefore strategise to incorporate more extensive ranges of sustainably produced clothing in their stores, knowing that consumers, irrespective of the income category, are not unwilling to pay for it.

Lupindo, Mongezi. "Millennials' Attitudes Towards Organic Personal Care Products in South Africa: An Application of the Theory of Planned Behaviour." Master's thesis, Faculty of Commerce, 2021. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/32766.

Full text
Abstract:
The organic products market has grown worldwide in recent years. Increasing demand for products that are less harmful to the environment and health is one of the factors driving this phenomenon. Consumers are becoming more conscious than ever before about the environmental effects of the products they consume. Specifically, millennials have become environmentally responsible consumers. Although earlier studies have provided insights into factors influencing attitudes towards organic products in various contexts, there is limited research into organic products in the South African context, specifically research focusing on organic personal care products among millennials. Millennials are influential consumers who are environmentally conscious and digitally savvy. Recently, social media has gained increased attention for its ability to amplify environmental concerns and promote sustainable behaviour among young people. As a result, understanding how young consumers develop their purchasing behaviours towards organic personal care products is necessary. Therefore, this study investigated millennials' attitudes towards environmental issues and health consciousness, and the effects of their attitudes, social norms, and perceived behavioural controls on their willingness to pay for organic personal care products. The study followed a descriptive, quantitative research design using an online selfadministered survey. A non-probability virtual snowball sample of 433 Facebook users, aged between 18 and 25 years who live in South Africa, was followed. Out of the 433 questionnaires that were collected, 377 were included for analysis. Data were analysed using Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results reveal that South African millennials' environmental concern and health consciousness had a significantly positive influence on their attitudes towards organic personal care products. The results also showed that attitude towards organic personal care products had a significant positive effect on subjective norms, and attitude was the strongest significant predictor of willingness to pay for organic personal care products. The results provide marketers with insights into how millennials ' attitude and willingness to buy organic personal care products can be influenced. Specifically, marketers should develop marketing strategies that incorporate environmental concerns, health awareness, and social influence to increase customer willingness to pay for organic personal care products. The findings also help policymakers understand the level of customer concern about the environment and their health, develop effective environmental policies necessary to achieve sustainability, and boost green purchasing through legislation. In addition, policymakers should be more constructive to promote ecologically conscious consumer behaviour. Collaborating with the private sector in various campaigns would help to enhance consumers' attitudes regarding the environmental concern.

Abstract:
The starting-point for our study has been to investigate if organic food is used as a tool in the teaching of environmental history. The research of teaching in environmental history motivates it’s purpose in many levels. The subject is supposed to be used in schools for interpretation of the local and global environmental situations in the world. We begin our study by uplifting different researchers motive for teaching environmentalhistory in schools. By interviewing teachers and students on the field it’s possible to see how good their knowledge is in organic food and Swedish history of agriculture. In our study we discuss subjects like environmental history, historical consciousness, ecological thinking and local history which are common subjects for us as future history teachers. The result of our investigations showed that there is weak intrest for organic food and Swedish agriculture among teachers, students and households. From our interviews we could tell that our students has a certain history consciousness to the connection between organic farming and Swedish history of agriculture before pesticides and industrial fertilizers.

Erswell, Christopher Charles. "UK aid policy and practice 1974-90 : an analysis of the poverty-focus, gender-consciousness and environmental sensitivity of British official aid." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 1994. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.387285.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis provides a detailed analysis of UK Aid policy over the period 1974-90. Its focus is primarily upon the extent to which official aid was concerned with poverty alleviation. This theme permitted a comparison to be made between the records of the Labour administration of 1974-79 and the Conservative administration of 1979-90. A quantitative comparison is made of the two aid programmes. The philosophical, moral and ideological aspects of the British aid programme are explored. Two themes in particular are studied in depth: aid and gender and aid and the environment. The influence of lobby groups is considered, including those representing political, commercial, gender, environmental and “human development” interests. The implications of conditionality are also considered. Assessment is made of the proportion of ODA projects which can be said to be relevant to women using unpublished ODA documents. An analysis is also made of internal, unpublished ODA “flagship” projects documents, aimed at the poorest, women and the environment. The results of this investigation indicate that official aid during the period under scrutiny was characterised by a continuity dictated by the exigencies of the export lobby, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Treasury and the Foreign Office. The commercial and political influences were already evident under Labour. A quantitative increase in aid was negotiated in return for the introduction of the Aid for Trade Provision. This significantly increased the commercial influence on aid, resulting in a shift away from the poorest countries and the sectors most critical to the poorest. It also prepared the ground for the greater emphasis on, and expansion of, commercial uses of aid under the Thatcher Government. Similarly, the political continuity between Labour and Conservative periods of office was typified by the support for the Somoza regime by the Labour Government and the axing of aid to the Sandinista regime by the Conservatives. A sectoral analysis of British aid reveals a heavy bias towards cash crops and a lack of emphasis on sub-sectors critical to basic needs and human development. Very few projects can be said to be relevant to women in a conscious, pre-planned way. The very small number of poverty-focussed, gender-conscious or environmentally-sensitive projects are unlikely to ever account for more than a tiny fraction of the aid budget. It is argued that the conditionality attached to an increasing amount of aid is a mechanism for imposing a model of economic development in the interest of the donor, making it advisable for recipients to avoid using aid until such time as conditionality can be eliminated. Conditional aid should be abandoned by Northern agencies, but, given that this is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future, it is necessary to support attempts to reform aid in order to eliminate as many strings as possible in the medium term.

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a way in which architecture and the built environment might work to integrate human consciousness and natural process. A theoretical design entitled Landscope is presented as a responsive, sustainable landscape that offers understanding of nature through active observation, interpretation and transformation of the environment. The design proposal is situated at the edge of Hamilton Harbour, Ontario, Canada, adjacent to the existing facilities of the National Water Research Institute. Two extended studies accompany the design proposal. The first, Water, presents a poetic exploration of cosmic, responsive, and connective qualities of water relating to nature and technology. The second study, Connected Fields, focuses on the visionary American engineer Buckminster Fuller and his ‘Geoscope’ project, a geodesic dome designed to act as a monitoring and control centre for global material and resource flows. This section also includes a discussion of general conceptions of the world, focusing on key twentieth-century conceptions of the Biosphere, Gaia, and the Noösphere. Historical theories of environmental perception are discussed including Gestalt psychology and technical systems of observation. Drawing upon this cultural material, the thesis attempts to open boundaries that separate nature and technology, encouraging a complex, mutually dependent relationship between these traditionally separate realms. The general pursuit is a cybernetic and virtual model for environmental and ontological hybridity, involving an evolution of consciousness at both individual and global scales.

ABSTRACT The environmental protection pressure and environmental protection regulation were considered to be a kind of corrosive strength for corporate competitiveness in the past, so most of enterprises would select to resist, escape. The whole world faces the serious greenhouse effects in recent years that arouses people to pay more attention on the environmental protection problem. The green environmental management is rising to a new trend between industry and business. The enterprise''s environmental management policy always implement under the forcing of external environmental protection pressure. Enterprises carry on the change complied with the external environment in green management, be able to look forward, fast action strength, sharp observation to promote the efforts at environmental protection, become the environmental protection leader. This research is the foundation of significances with the community responsibility and enterprise''s environmental consciousness and its importance born of enterprises, and then in order to complement with the two of a new line of environmental consciousness and the regulation (for example Kyoto Protocol that will come into force in 2005 ) of the international environmental protection convention, to probe into enterprise community responsibility and enterprise''s environmental consciousness for the industry in domestic to affect the competing advantage, it can offer the references for the industry manufacturer, the main purpose is to probe into enterprise''s community responsibility and enterprise''s environmental consciousness and compete for the influence of the advantage on enterprises, study ‘environmental consciousness'' with ''environmental protection promise'' to ''environmental protection competes the advantage'' exert an influence. And offer the community responsibility and investment correct appraisal and position of environmental protection. The corporate investment of environmental protection and green management say to be the inevitable trend in the future, enterprises invested early can also obtain the advantage of entering the market early, to hesitate to move forward to environmental protection, will not merely take the risk disciplined as a warning by the regulation of environmental protection in the future, and will cause a lot of manage difficulty that go to, enterprise should pay attention to itself and inter-dynamic of surrounding environment, enable the enterprise body to protect activity participant''s high-quality life too while be able to get the rational profit, this is not only community responsibility of an enterprise, and the environmental consciousness that should all possess of enterprises even more, so as to reach the goal of the green environment, and improve the competition advantages of enterprises by this. Taiwan is an island country. People in Taiwan generally are in lack of marine consciousness due to the traditional concept of “land over ocean” rooted in people’s mind and the ignorance of marine education. In recent years, to awaken people’s marine consciousness, the government started to promote the policy of “building nation through ocean” and furthermore initiated a number of marine-related programs. College students are generally regarded as future elite leaders and decision makers in our society. Their understanding and perception of the marine environment plays a critical role in shaping the ocean policy of a country. In this regard, this paper aims to examine how college students in Taiwan perceive the marine environment and marine related issues and analyze the factors to the marine environmental behavior. A questionnaire method was employed. 20 colleges were selected based on their geographical distribution. Students enrolled in these colleges were conveniently sampled to fill the questionnaire. A total of 1,000 surveys were collected. The results show that the mean of environmental consciousness is 4.25, indicating that students on average perceive the destruction of the marine environment is serious. The mean of environment attitude is 4.28, showing that students have a positive attitude toward the marine environment. As for participation of marine recreational activities, the mean is 2.66, indicating that students are seldom engaged in the said activities. The factors of marine environmental knowledge and attitude have a positive on behavior. The effect of knowledge is much greater than that of other two factors, indicating that education is crucial in promoting students’ environmental consciousness.

This article aims to explore the relationship amongst corporate environmental consciousness, green procurement, environment performance and competitive advantage. This study emphasizes green procurement as the vital position of supply chains and the trigger of operating activities. Both on-site questionnaires and mail questionnaires are implemented in Taiwan’s manufacturing industry. The results of structural equation model (SEM) indicate that corporate environmental consciousness positively affects green procurement and environmental performance and competitive advantage. The findings also suggest that corporate environmental consciousness affect environmental performance not only by a direct way, but also by an indirect way via green procurement. Specifically, corporate environmental consciousness promotes the environmental performance through green procurement, and environmental performance further boosts corporate competitive advantage. Therefore, the manufacturing industry in Taiwan ought to cultivate corporate environmental consciousness and well manage green procurement to achieve environmental performance and enhance their competitive advantages.

Stern (2007) stated global warming represents the failure of the market on a colossal scale. Economic theory says prices are set by the forces of supply and demand in the market. However, greenhouse gases are considered an externality in economic terms; that is, environmental costs are not paid for by those who create the emissions. The key aim in implementing environmental measures is to ensure that those generating emissions face a marginal cost of emissions that reflects the damage they cause. Not only does this encourage emitters to invest in alternative, low-carbon technologies, it encourages consumers to change their spending habits in response to price increases (Stern, 2007). We explore the idea of environmental costs as externalities in the context of willingness to pay for environmental measures. These environmental measures include an environmental tax and voluntary carbon offsets. To determine an individual's willingness to pay a tax or voluntary carbon offsets, we explore an individual’s environmental consciousness, which has been broken down into three distinct constructs: environmental attitudes, environmental behavior and ascription of responsibility.

Abstract Rapid urbanization and booming economy, along with various environmental problems and insufficient public facilities, have directly influenced urban development. Since a sound living environment is everyone’s expectation and pursuit, a proper space and legal standard offered by administration and legislation organization for reasonable and smooth operation seems essential. However, the quality is mainly guaranteed by all the habitants’ and users’ participation, identity, responsibility, and affection. For meeting the needs, the government has carried out couples of reformation policies, hoping to advance participation and promote eco-concept, eco-action, and further common awakening. On the contrary, the effects are still under observation and review. Due to the above, the study, through environmental recognition, environmental attitude, sense community, dwelling environment quality, and related researches, understands the general habitants’ behavioral reaction, clears the key factors, constructs the hypothesis, and thoroughly explores the relationship and impact from questionnaires. The questionnaires indicate that the four factors: community awakening, community affection, community participation, community support are considerably related; and the evaluation of living quality is determined by the habitants’ age, educational background, and dwelling years. Meanwhile, the study shows that community reformation has positive influence on the four mentioned factors, particularly on community participation and living reaction. Such an observation immediately illustrates the community reformation has positive impact on living environment.

The issues of environmental pollution are concerned with by more and more customers who have environmental consciousness. There are also more and more green/ friendly products which may be less pollution for our environment in the market. The purpose of this study is to know the factors which influence customers to purchase environmental friendly products. Therefore, this study discusses the relationship of environmental consciousness, product involvement, and purchase intention of each other. Hopefully, the results of the study will help marketers to develop their marketing strategies. There are 414 questionnaires which are from general customers. The research use Smart PLS 3.0 to explain the relationships of variances. The results are as following: 1.Both the relationship between the reality of limits to growth and rejection of exemptionalism of environmental consciousness and purchase intention are significant. 2. The relationship between product involvement and purchase intention is significant. 3. Product involvement is completely mediator between the fragility of nature’s balance of environmental consciousness and purchase intention and between the possibility of an ecocrisis of environmental consciousness and purchase intention. According to the study, we suggest that marketers can understand the products which they sell are which facets of environmental consciousness. Then marketers can improve customers about the environmental consciousness and their product involvement. By this way, customers may have high purchase intention to buy environmental friendly products.
