In this paper, we identify and discuss some of the ethical problems associated with digital sensors used to detect water contamination and air pollution in the United States. Such safety devices are often deployed unsystematically and with questionable efficacy, thereby structuring the life chances of people in unequal ways. Whereas most technological infrastructures are hidden from view – or at least from active awareness – until they cease to function, those infrastructures meant to monitor and/or regulate largely ?invisible? public health dangers resist public awareness even when they fail.

Abstract:
People can respond to the planet in danger through emotions. In English, some of the most common emotional reactions to the climate crisis have been labelled with terms such as eco-anxiety, climate grief and ecological distress. This chapter takes the popular, rather than academic, reception of these emotion terms based on a collection of English-language podcasts. As a cultural pragmatics study, its method is semantically-enhanced discourse studies, which draws on natural semantic metalanguage (NSM) approach. Through examination of popular discussions of climate emotions, which show some diversity of opinion, the chapter moves to put forward an emotion model for overarching relevant ecological feelings and an action model for a typical motivation of School Strikers. These models constitute two innovative representations arising from semantically-enhanced discourse studies. The chapter ends with some proposals for how to study the pragmatics of emotions and how to work with novel, often environmental, vocabulary for which fixed senses have not settled.

Abstract:
AbstractFor obvious reasons, space activities are generally classed as ultra-hazardous endeavours, i.e. they are inherently dangerous, not only for the various vehicles leaving the Earth atmosphere, but also the cargo such vehicles carry, be it human or otherwise. Additionally, space activities generate environmental risks in outer space that can, at times, impact the Earth as what goes up, must inevitably come down. The hazards of spaceflight come from multiple sources, including, but not limited to, the technology used (e.g. nuclear power sources) and the hostile nature of outer space which is difficult to reach, difficult to survive in and difficult to return from. This inherent danger has been tragically highlighted not only by the shuttle disasters involving Challenger (1986) and Columbia (2003) but also by the vast field of radioactive debris left in Canada after the uncontrolled re-entry of the Soviet satellite Cosmos 954 in 1977. The latter accident exemplifies that ultra-hazardous activities require liability rules because when something goes wrong, the consequences can be significant for any injured parties.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the context of the global climate crisis and the resulting catastrophic flooding phenomena, the contribution looks at an innovative digital model for the coastal recovery, attentive to the protection of waterfronts and their stakeholders. By intervening in the relationship between transformation and conservation of built environment, it is necessary to establish governance support tools capable of foreseeing emergency scenarios to protect the population. The research looks at the port areas of coastal cities as a contemporary and collective public space in which to test the collaborative digital model proposed for waterfronts recovery and maintenance. The need-based methodological process used the human life protection, exposed to flooding danger, as the input of a design process. Through a survey and modeling phase, the waterfront breaks down into environmental and technological systems, specifying the extent of the failure. The waterfront digitization allows providing the governance with a sensor alert tool that gives the monitoring of the behavior and the state of the waterfront elements’ degradation. This information is simplified and given back to the users who both made responsible for the maintenance culture of the places they use and alerted to the possible danger they are exposed. The case is Atrani, where an internal flooding, caused by the estuary overflowing, degenerated in the entire coastal system up to the sea. The results provide a digital model capable of exploring and optimizing the coastal built environment to increase the governance capacity and the waterfront performance.
