Abstract:
Aim: Increased awareness of creating design solutions that can meet the social and psychological needs of patients in healthcare spaces highlights research on the psychology of place-patient/ doctors/healthcare staff. Therefore, patient-oriented health space designs that provide a sense of trust and satisfaction to patients – along with a supportive approach to their treatment – are the points of departure in this study, while understanding the effects and experiences of design on patients. Environmental graphic design elements (photographs, illustrations, typography, and pictograms) in the interiors of hospitals emerge as the factors that shape the patient's spatial experience, such as orientation, information, and perception of a space. In this study, the effects of such design elements on user perception in health spaces were investigated, and these design criteria that play a role in determining and actively interacting with the environmental graphic design elements in hospital spaces are encountered. Based on the abovementioned facts, this research aims to contribute to the graphics in health spaces in the context of environmental graphic design, with experience covering both fields. Method: Three hospitals, which are sufficient in terms of environmental graphic design elements and have differences between them, were determined as the research places. The elements in these hospitals were photographed and surveyed on user groups (patients, doctors, health personnel) who experienced the places continuously or temporarily. Results and Conclusion: It was demonstrated by statistical data that the elements in the investigated places could not provide the expected effects as a whole. As a result, environmental graphic design applications that have a supportive design understanding in hospital spaces should have a holistic language, and that design understanding can only be demonstrated with the cooperation of architects, interior designers, graphic designers, and industrial designers.

Abstract:
Background: Health message design plays an important role in knowledge acquisition and changes in attitudes towards a nutrient or substance, such as caffeine. To foster the effectiveness of health education, greater attention should be paid to the gist-based design of health messages that include visual representations. Fuzzy-trace theory indicates that gist knowledge can be influential in decision-making about health and medical problems. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of different graphic types (i.e. gist, verbatim and decoration) on knowledge of gist and verbatim messages, which may in turn influence attitudes and intentions towards caffeine control. Method: Middle school students ( n = 315) in South Korea individually studied reading materials on caffeine under three research conditions with respect to graphic types. Results: This study found an interaction effect between sex and graphic types when it came to student perceptions of gist representation and the visual design of graphics. Graphic types also significantly influenced gist knowledge but not verbatim knowledge. Gist and verbatim graphics were more effective in acquiring gist knowledge about caffeine control than decorative graphics. In addition, gist knowledge significantly influenced attitudes and intentions towards caffeine control. Conclusion: The main finding of this study is the importance of acquiring gist knowledge from health messages, which can be enhanced through the effective use of visual representations.

Abstract:
Set against a background of graphic designs identity crisis, this paper proposes that information design can provide an adaptable and relevant framework for teaching graphic design. With social, technological, environmental, and industrial changes providing a new context for design and how it operates in the world, an audience-focussed, problem-solving approach is validated as central to reimagining graphic design education. Through a case study example, the paper suggests that when graphic design students in a traditional craft-based design education programme are offered a human-centred approach to solving design problemsspecifically information design problem solving and research methodstheir own graphic design practice changes.

The article examines curatorial practices in regard to graphic design and posters—a subject only sparsely covered by poster research. It investigates how urban, environmental structures can work as guidelines for curating posters and ephemerals in museums. By applying an ecological view to design, it stresses the reciprocal relationship of humans with their built and product-designed environments and suggests this approach to be viable for curatorial work. It further demonstrates the point in regard to a recent event, the exhibition Spot on! British Posters from the Interwar Years, which was exhibited at the Danish Poster Museum in 2015–2016 and initiated by author and graphic designer Michael Jensen.

Nelson, Elisabeth S. "Using Selective Attention Theory to Design Bivariate Point Symbols." Cartographic Perspectives, no. 32 (March 1, 1999): 6–28. http://dx.doi.org/10.14714/cp32.625.

Full text
Abstract:
The research discussed in this paper applies the theory of selective attention to graphic variables used in designing map symbols. Selective attention contends that our ability to analyze a symbol’s graphic variables (i.e., color, size) is affected by other graphic variables present in the same symbol. Psychological research suggests that certain combinations of graphic variables can enhance or restrict selective attention. In this literature, variables are described as either separable (capable of being attended to independently of other dimensions), integral (cannot be processed without interference from other dimensions), or configural (shows characteristics of both integrality and separability and may also form new, emergent properties). For example, sometimes it may be desirable for a map user to focus individually on separate symbol dimensions when using a bivariate or multivariate map, whereas under other conditions it may be advantageous for him/her to integrate the graphic variables visually for interpretation. Without empirical evidence describing such interactions for various combinations of graphic variables, cartographers cannot truly evaluate the functionality of the symbols they use on maps. The research reported here is the result of the first of a set of four inter-related experiments. Combinations of graphic variables were examined in an abstract setting using a speeded-classification task. Response data and accuracy data were used to provide an initial assessment of the levels of integrality, separability and configurality of several graphic combinations. Findings from this study will be integrated into subsequent map-using experiments, the results of which will assist cartographers in the design of complex map symbols.

Abstract:
Today one of the important spaces in cities is the public spaces that, according to their classification and specifications, there is no limit to the use of different groups of people, and due to the presence of all type of people in these spaces, attention to identifying is of paramount importance. Environmental graphic is one of the useful tools to design the spaces and create identity. Of course we know that urban identity is based on the relationship and coordination of various branches of art and science such as psychology, sociology, economics, traffic, landscaping, urbanization, architecture, graphic design and so on. Although, as an interdisciplinary topic, it can be said that this branch of graphic can affect urban identity reformation, given its potentials. In this paper we attempt to study about this topic through applied descriptive-analytic method and to consider the position and importance of environmental graphic in create identity for urban public spaces, using required parameters analyze and definition by library method. Considering the space constructed in city without notice to identity, we analyze this important that if there is public space made with environmental graphic, how it creates an identity.

Abstract:
The history of the art of graphic design and posters goes back to cave drawings during the Stone Age. Graphic design and posters are based on social needs and change in different stages of social development. They are now enjoying one of the apexes of their development. The art of graphic and poster design which developed and evolved in the historical and social development process, has taken on new dimensions during the transition from the modern to the postmodern period in accordance with the needs of our society of consumption and by using the technical/technological tools and methods within this period. In particular, the invention of the printing press, lithography, and the Industrial Revolution have led to great leaps in the art of graphic and poster design as in all other areas of life. Computer and digital technologies that were first developed in the middle of the 20th century almost brought about a revolution in the art of graphic and poster design. These great breakthroughs caused technical and technological innovations and changed the art of graphic design. While education in graphic design acquired an institutional dimension, its aims and objectives were transformed. Discussions of postmodernism, new forms of relationship, concepts and schools are reflected in the art. Relationships between postmodernism and graphic design, poster styles categorized as postmodern and advertising culture have caused new debates. Advertisements and advertising posters have acquired new forms to meet the needs of today’s consumer society, which are getting more and more complex. Its dynamics have changed posters and advertising. This study discusses the evolution of the art of graphic and poster design within the whole historical and social development process, its dimensions, postmodernism and striking examples of postmodern advertising posters.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to test the effects of cigarette warning labels that used text-only or text-plus relevant graphics. The labels were framed in terms of either the negative consequences of smoking (loss frame) or the benefits of not smoking (gain frame). The role of smoking identity – the centrality of being a smoker to one's self-concept – in the effects of the warning labels was also examined. Design/methodology/approach – An experiment was conducted online with 132 college smokers. Participants were randomly assigned to viewing either graphic or text-only labels that were either gain or loss framed. Smoking identity was measure prior to viewing. Message evaluations and smoking intentions were assessed after exposure as dependent measures. Findings – A consistent interaction between graphics and framing emerged across a number of dependent measures. For graphic warning labels, the loss frame was more advantageous than the gain frame. For text-only warning labels, framing did not make any difference. This two-way interaction was further qualified by smoking identity for some, but not all, dependent measures. Practical implications – Findings from this study support the use of graphic warning labels that focus on the negative health consequences of smoking. Originality/value – Experimental research on graphic cigarette warning labels is limited and rarely considers the roles of framing and smoking identity. This study offered an initial test of the complex interaction among these message and audience variables as they jointly influence message reception and smoking intentions.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to present a case report involving environmental performance analysis of a big Brazilian graphic company. Design/methodology/approach An “environmental performance indicator” (Iepa) was developed, which is calculated taking into consideration the weighting of potential environmental impact of each residue/sub-product generated, the relative spatial dispersion which each residue/sub-product can reach and adequacy evaluation of final allocation accomplished by the company for each residue/sub-product. Findings Despite the evidence that the corporations emit gases generated by the burning of volatile organic compounds to the atmosphere, the result obtained is favorable to enterprise, largely, due to the adequate allocation given to industrial effluent, which is the waste with the largest share on Iepa (50.2 percent). Industrial effluent is collected by a company licensed by Environmental Sanitation Company of the state of São Paulo, which is an environmentally adequate practice. The result of Iepa=90.8 percent is explained by the large amount of CO2 emitted by the operations into the atmosphere throughout the year. Practical implications The method used can be applied to measure the environmental impact generated by any business of a graphic service sector. Originality/value The authors observed, in the specialized literature, a small number of works dealing with the environmental management of graphic sector companies, as well as methodologies for assessing the environmental performance of companies through environmental performance indicators. The originality of the work is in the developed method, which takes into account: the potential impact of each residue/sub-product generated; the amount of each residue/sub-product generated in a given time period; the dispersion that each residue/sub-product can attain; and the evaluation of eventual allocation of each residue/sub-product.

Abstract:
Introduction:The quality of transit services has long been recognized as a significant factor affecting passenger behavior and station quality. The objective of this paper was to compare the environmental graphic designs for passengers’ decision to choose walking ways in subway stations of Bangkok Metropolis, Thailand. Methods:It uses the multi-stage sampling approach at various forms of station entries-exits and traffic statistics of service usage by passengers. The forms of station entries-exits can be divided into four types: 1) Silom Station (2-way exits), 2) Sukhumvit Station (3-way exits), 3) Huai Khwang Station (4-way exits), and 4) Phahon Yothin Station (5-way exits). Questionnaires were used to collect data from 445 passengers, using Likert Scale and t-test/ANOVA. The comparative analysis of directional signs was conducted with three factors as follows; 1) signs with 1-point location, 2) signs with 2-point locations, and 3) signs with 3-point locations. Results:The results found the signs with 2-point locations could provide additional information about the places and were suitable for the general environment of all stations. However, when adding further information about the places on the signs with 3-point locations, some limitations were found regarding the passengers’ need for location information with a complex physical environment of the station. Also, when considering the passengers’ attributes and behaviors, it was found that they also affected the environmental graphic design significantly. Conclusion:The research findings can be used as information for the environmental graphic designers to develop wayfinding system to improve for passengers’ travelling in mass transit stations.

In order to verify the incidence of some aspects related to communication in urban space studies, this paper approaches first the notions of perception and interpretation of cities in the works of the geographer, Milton Santos; of the architect, Gordon Cullen; of the urban designers, Kevin Lynch and Amos Rapoport, and the semiotics master, Lucrécia D'Aléssio Ferrara. The purpose is to characterize urban design as an interdisciplinary system of environmental communication. This system expresses the development of a field of design professions and the preparation of the professionals combining design knowledge and skills of different areas of design professions (urbanism, architecture, ergonomics and graphic design) with a general understanding of the communication and educational processes. This paper aims to show that spatial organization and the circulation system can not be seen independent of environmental communication, which provides the information the users will need to solve the wayfind problems. Environmental education has to be based on perceptual, cognitive and behavioral development.

The article deals with the evolution of the environmental consciousness of the population of a megapolis in the conditions of the development of the postindustrial epoch of town planning, when such concepts as “the att ractiveness of the city, the prestige of the address of residence, the ecological background, the level of improvement” become indicators of the level of its development. The author reveals the basics of the contradiction between the creative qualities of the above factors and their dominant characteristics that facilitate the emergence of a megapolis on the international market for competition and investment. The search for regularities in the development of the spatial-functional environment of the megapolis is actualized depending on the specifi city and level of the environmental consciousness and behavior of the townspeople. Abstract:
Today’s industrial design has gone beyond the traditional product design. China is in the transfer process from the world's manufacturing plant to the world's manufacturing center. Green design is the basis of access to green products, and has become one of the hot researches in design areas. The results show that the design phase determines the 70% to 80% of manufacturing cost, while the design itself accounts for only 10% of the total cost. The importance of the roll of design to product is still increasing if considering the environmental factors. Because the level of ecological damage caused by the product design is far greater than the level of ecological damage caused by the design process itself, only in the design stage should the "green level" of products be taken as a design target, the desired design result could be achieved, which is one of the goal of ergonomics. In today's information society, the graphic communications industry is charged with an irreplaceable task of information manufacture and dissemination. A variety of devices (including electronic, optical, mechanical equipment and instruments, and even household facilities and equipment, etc.) used by the modern graphic communications industry need the direct contact, operation or use of the operator. Design and manufacture of these devices need to apply modern ergonomic design theory and research results. In this paper, the importance of ergonomics, the features and research aspects of green design, developing trends of ergonomics, and the application of ergonomics in the graphic communications industry are described.

Abstract:
The paper addresses the training of specialists in civil engineering, having skills in project activities and advanced design techniques. Including technologies for the design of facilities, taking into account environmental norms and rules of nature management. Teamwork skills are one of the important competencies of a modern specialist. The paper describes ways to implement students’ teamwork in the training process at universities. It is shown how collective training techniques are introduced to the training process of engineering students. The author notes the importance of further development of project-based learning for the training of specialists in civil engineering, architecture and other engineering fields. It is also noted that the accomplishment of assignments — and not only individually but also in micro-groups — often adds a competitive aspect to the process, helps reveal leadership skills, and makes it possible for students to fulfill themselves at their best and demonstrate their talents. Collective assignments always require thinking outside the box, looking for unconventional solutions, and make students have an open mind. The paper also addresses matters of developing the graphic culture in students during their training and highlights the importance of the graphic culture in the training of highly qualified specialists.

This paper focuses on using a popular microcomputer graphic design package (CorelDRAW 4.0) in conjunction with a variety of GIS/mapping software to test their capacity to transfer map images. Emphasis is placed on the advantages and disadvantages of transferring different bitmap and vector formats, rather than on the nature of the formats themselves. All of the cartographic packages tested had some capacity to export thematic maps to CorelDRAW, although some file formats provided greater flexibility than others. Generally, it appears that simpler thematic maps transfer easily, while more complex types require considerably more effort to transfer successfully. Both Windows Metafiles and Computer Graphics Metafiles proved to be efficient file formats for exporting most types of map images to CorelDRAW.

Abstract:
The study of 'Graphic design for children with learning disabilities' is a study that delves into learning-disabled children in the Isaan region. The author used the survey to formulate a graphic and media design model to enhance LD children's learning. This paper is a qualitative study of the data retrieved from the literature review and field data. Target groups include experts, practitioners, and stakeholders. Research instruments are structured and non-structured interviews, observation forms, and tests. The collected data were then analyzed using the 'information processing theory,' 'structural-functional theory,' product design principle, and graphic design element principle. The paper presents the result using descriptive analysis. Based on the study, it was found that the cause for learning disabilities in children living in Isaan mostly concerns with environmental learning disabilities. The best period for children with learning disabilities to effectively receive help is during their early primary or elementary education. The types of learning disabilities that can be found in children in the Isaan region are mostly reading and writing disabilities. Further, it was also revealed that Nakhonratchasima Primary Education Service Area 2 has the highest rate of learning-disabled children in Isaan. Most of the children with learning disabilities did not receive proper care from their caretakers. To identifying children with learning disabilities, the author collaborated with the children's caretakers, schools, Special Education Bureau, and hospitals. Common classroom behaviors among these children are their inability to read and write; this includes difficulties in social interactions and activity participation. As for the learning materials, it is clear that the materials used did not correspond with their special needs due to their disabilities. It is clear that these children need materials made for individual use that does not require participation in front of the class or learning through multimedia. The discovery can be used as a guideline in formulating graphic design. The graphic design should make insignificant information less distinct while reinforcing the main contents with bold lines, complementary colors, page distance, pictures used in representing alphabets, and the adoption of fun and creative characters. As for the material design guideline, the media should focus on one story for individual use. Students should also learn through playing, repeated reading, writing practice, using materials repeatedly without being bored, and can memorize the lessons when participating in hands-on activities. Abstract:
BackgroundUruguay, a South American country of 3.4 million inhabitants that has already banned tobacco advertising, prohibited such terms as light, mild and low-tar and required graphic warnings covering 80% of cigarette packs, is considering the imposition of plain, standardised packaging.MethodsWe conducted an experimental choice-based conjoint analysis of the impact of alternative cigarette package designs on the risk perceptions of 180 adult current Uruguayan smokers. We compared plain packaging, with a standardised brand description and the dark brown background colour required on Australian cigarette packages, to two controls: the current package design with distinctive brand elements and colours; and a modified package design, with distinctive brand elements and the dark brown background colour. Graphic warnings were also varied.ResultsPlain packaging significantly reduced the probability of perceiving the stimulus cigarettes as less harmful in comparison to the current package design (OR 0.398, 95% CI 0.333 to 0.476, p<0.001) and the modified package design (OR 0.729, 95% CI 0.626 to 0.849, p<0.001).ConclusionsPlain packaging enhanced the perceived risk of cigarette products even in a highly regulated setting such as Uruguay. Both the elimination of distinctive brand elements and the use of Australia’s dark brown background colour contributed to the observed effect.

Abstract:
Objective: The study aimed to investigate whether children use specific types of graphic cues (facial, postural, contextual) in their drawings of healthy and ill persons and whether these cues differ as a function of age. Design: Cross-sectional design. Setting: A public primary school in a medium-sized city in Greece. Method: A total of 200 children in the age group of 5, 7, 9 and 11 years were first asked to define the terms under investigation, and then to draw a healthy and an ill person, as well as a baseline drawing (of a person neither healthy nor ill). Human figure drawings of health and illness were compared with their baseline drawing in an attempt to detect possible alterations in the (1) face, (2) body and (3) overall context of the drawing. Results: From the age of 5 years onwards, children were able to use a combination of graphic cues to convey health and illness in their drawings. Moreover, children in all age groups more often (1) employed facial cues to depict illness and health, (2) used more postural and contextual cues to depict illness than health, (3) introduced a variety of contextual cues in their drawings (e.g. linguistic, nutritional, environmental, physical and medical) and (4) used more types of graphic cues as well as more categories of contextual cues to depict illness than health. Finally, it was found that the drawings of the 5-year-old children involved significantly fewer graphic cues than those of the 7- and 11-year-olds, and significantly less contextual cues than the drawings produced by the 9- and 11-year-olds. Conclusion: Study findings shed light on the way children perceive and represent graphically illness and health and these are discussed in relation to their implications for health education.

Abstract:
Abstract First-generation Chinese and Korean male immigrants in the United States are at high risk for tobacco use. This study pilot-tested a graphic, native-language text-messaging intervention to promote smoking cessation among these groups. First-generation Chinese and Korean male immigrant smokers (N = 71) were recruited from the Washington DC area. Participants were randomly assigned to one of four conditions based on a between-subjects 2 (graphic plus text or text-only messages) 2 (quitline information or quitting tips) design. The text-messaging intervention included 30 text messages in total and lasted one month. Participants completed an expired air carbon monoxide (CO) assessment and self-reported measures at both baseline and follow-up. Results show that, from baseline to follow-up, participants’ expired air CO levels decreased significantly (P = 0.001). Attitude toward quitting also became more positive (P = 0.028). Compared with text-only messages, graphic text messages produced greater positive changes in quitting attitudes (P = 0.039) and elicited greater fear response (P = 0.005). Compared with quitting tip messages, quitline information resulted in greater regret (P = 0.016) and fear (P = 0.051). These findings suggest that graphic text-messaging can be an effective method to promote smoking cessation among first-generation Chinese and Korean male immigrants.

Abstract:
<p>There is significant potential for responsive sun screening systems to improve the energy performance of large scale public and commercial buildings. However there has been minimal uptake, primarily due to the capital and maintenance costs. We propose that these costs can be offset by providing added value in three ways. (1) Development of a finer grained control interface for occupants to enhance individual comfort, which has been shown to improve worker productivity. (2) With a high granularity of panels and a control system that enables individual movement of each panel, the system can be re-purposed as a low resolution media screen to foster social interactions in urban settings. (3) Enabling a new movement-aesthetic for architecture of indeterminate states that coalesce and shift during the daily and seasonal cycles, thus enlivening the public face of architecture. To evaluate the feasibility of such hybrid responsive facades we are developing physical prototypes calibrated to real time simulation and control software. A initial proof-of-concept design explores the optimal configuration and geometry of the kinetic panels to enable the granularity required for a range of graphic and textural information, along with development of the actuator. We document progress to date on this research into hybrid environmental-media façades’.</p>

Abstract:
Every other year, the International Cartographic Association sponsors an international map design competition, for children 15 years old or younger, that coincides with its biennial congress. The competition promotes the creative representation of the world. The theme of the latest competition was “A World Map.” The breadth and ambiguity of this theme does not convey information about its conceptual basis or the grounds upon which entries might be judged. In promotional material, words like “creativity” often appear but it is unclear what is meant in this cartographic context. In comparing what cartographers and art educators say about creativity, it is clear that there are perceptual skills and a body of principles of graphic design which cartographers can systematically apply to enhance creative map design particularly when specific problems are being addressed. This paper provides some background on these and other related questions and suggests ways that the Map Design Competition might provide more useful guidance for competitors and judges alike.

AbstractObjectiveTo demonstrate the use of four different qualitative methods in creating content, including text and graphic design for print interventions to support better nutrition in low-income households that rely on charitable pantries.DesignFour methods were used for measuring household cooks’ responses to the content and design of recipes and food-use tips especially designed for low-income households: (i) focus groups with pantry clients; (ii) questionnaires administered at sites where the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) programme beneficiaries gather, to survey cooks’ judgements about the appeal of recipes; (iii) recruitment of WIC clients to prepare recipes at home, followed by phone interviews about the cooks’ actual experiences preparing and serving dishes; and (iv) a new technique to gauge pantry clients’ preferred ordering of print information, using bits of content backed by Velcro™ strips that participants applied to felt boards. Ten sets of illustrated recipes and food-use tips were prepared, each set focusing on a different fresh vegetable that is periodically available from charitable sources.SubjectsLow-income recipients of food from community pantries in the USA, and beneficiaries of the WIC programme.ResultsIllustrative findings show how the four types of qualitative evaluations can inform decisions about content and about graphic design. Discoveries from this formative research illuminate challenges of supporting better nutrition among households that depend on charitable sources of food supply.ConclusionsThese multi-method evaluation techniques can be adapted to the development of any print material, whether intended for widespread dissemination or for field research into nutrition behaviour.
