Abstract:
Environmental ethics and environmental journalism are influencing the developing philosophy of environmental citizenship. This philosophy involves the ideas that people are part of the environment, that the future depends on a healthy environment, and that action on behalf of the environment is necessary. It applies to individuals, communities, large and small companies and corporations, governments, and a coalition of nations. Environmental philosophers and environmental journalists can work together, in a symbiotic way, to foster discussions among citizens and policy makers about ideas as well as events, and thus, influence attitudes and policies, and continue to influence environmental citizenship. Environmental citizenship as an extension of democracy offers the best chance for undoing the manmade problems which are degrading the quality of life on Earth. A healthier environment is the will of the people. An informed, voting public will succeed in creating a healthier environment. Pioneering work by philosophers and journalists, especially over the last forty-five years has brought the dialogue about environmental problems to an unprecedented level and continues to offer encouragement to the mindful evolution of mankind. These ecological discussions of rights and responsibilities, intrinsic and economic values, pragmatism and utilitarianism, culture and spirit, are increasingly being applied to a developing idea of sustainability, and are, thus, helping to expand ideas about what it means to be a citizen in a democracy.

Abstract:
The phenomenon of human-caused climate change releases a “cosmopolitan imperative” (Beck 2010, 258) that demands cooperation across boundaries: national, scalar, temporal, epistemological and ontological (cf. Hulme 2010, Urry 2011). However, many of the approaches taken today only reinforce such distinctions: for example, by insisting on a universal scientific understanding of climate change as a basis for policy (Jasanoff 2010a). In the People’s Republic of China, the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide (PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency 2007), the new leadership has made “Beautiful China” and “Ecological Civilization” two of their most prominent official slogans and enshrined sustainable development as core state policy (Geall 2012, Geall and Hilton 2014). This drive for “low-carbon development,” like climate change more broadly, reveals a set of social, ecological and political concerns with interlocking, complex and uncertain dynamics. How we frame incomplete knowledge about such dynamic systems affects the political approaches that are taken to sustainability (Rittel and Webber 1973, Leach, Scoones and Stirling 2010). This dissertation uses ethnographic methods to investigate how Chinese environmental journalists make framing decisions around the science and politics of climate change. This reveals how reporters can find spaces for political engagement in a restrictive and changeable media and governance environment, one that not only reflects a changing history of attitudes towards the environment in China, but also an international arena dominated by technocratic and managerial approaches to sustainability. It finds that Chinese journalists have found sophisticated ways to map the complex interactions of human and natural systems presented by climate change – and have addressed uncertainties in a fashion that points towards more open and plural pathways to sustainability.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2001.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: It is calculated that the biosphere is worth between $16 and $54 trillion. The environment, however, is constantly under threat of proposed development that focuses on recreational, industrial, commercial and residential developments. The environment is an unobtrusive subject. Members of the public can seldom gain firsthand experience about those activities and actions that influence the environment. Therefore, the public relies heavily on the media to inform them of the general state of the environment. This thesis aims to provide guidelines to journalists who work in the field of environmental reporting. Various models of the communication of science, according to which environmental journalists present their work, are discussed. Sustainable journalism is presented as a solution in the debate between objective and subjective reporting. Environmental journalists have diverse sources to tap in search of credible articles. Attention is given to the specific relationship between the media, scientists and lobby groups. Attention is also given to the process of interviewing sources. Certain issues and activities generate more media attention than others. This is discussed with reference to news subjects, agenda setting and the framing of messages. Attention is given to the issues that make a subject newsworthy, ie risk journalism, local input, human interest, conflict and visual impact.<br>AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die waarde van die biosfeer word geskat tussen $16 en $54 triljoen.

Abstract:
Economic retrenchment, social shifts, and technological changes endanger journalism's democratic role. Journalism education faces parallel threats. I review the state of journalism and education, linking the crisis to society's loss of story, framed philosophically by the Dewey-critical theory split over journalism and power. I explore the potential for renewing journalism and education with Carey's ritual model and Postman's restoration of storytelling. I then summarize existing major academic programs and suggest a new interdisciplinary curriculum for environmental journalism, a specialty well suited to experimental, democracy-centered education. The curriculum uses as pedagogy active and conversational learning and reflection. A graduate introductory course is detailed, followed by additional suggested classes that could form the basis of a graduate certificate program or, with further expansion, a graduate degree concentration.

Abstract:
This thesis explores the topic of how one can streamline a data journalists analytical workflow in a graph visualization environment. Interactive graph visualizations have been used recently by data journalists to investigate the biggest leaks of data in history. Graph visualizations empower users to find patterns in their connected data, and as the world continuously produces more data, the more important it becomes to make sense of it. The exploration was done by conducting semi-structured interviews with users, which illuminated three categories of insights called Graph Readability, Charts in Graphs and Temporality. Graph Readability was the category that were conceptualized and designed by integrating user research and data visualization best practises. The design process was concluded with a usability test with graph visualization developers, followed by a final iteration of the concept. The outcome resulted in a module that lets users simplify their graph and preserve information by aggregating nodes with similar attributes.

Kim, Sa-Seong. "News organisational culture and crisis of journalism in the Internet environment : the development of newspaper specialism in Korean journalism." Thesis, University of Leicester, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/2381/30561.

Full text
Abstract:
This study intends to explore how news organisational culture in Korean journalism deals with new policies introduced in an effort to resolve current problems. It aims to identify how the established news organisational culture of Korean newspaper journalism relates to the specialist journalism that news organisations are introducing in order to deal with such problems as journalists' job prospects and Internet challenges.;This study posits three research questions: "Why do news organisations intend to introduce specialism?"; "What does specialism have to do with news organisational culture?" and "Is specialism effective in providing 'better journalism'?" This study conducts four pieces of field research: 26 in-depth interviews, two focus group discussions, a survey, and a brief content analysis. This study finds that specialism is a strategic choice which is arbitrarily adapted for problem-solving rather than an established culture. Secondly, specialism reveals some significant conflicts between specialists and generalist reporters regarding personnel management policies and the routines of news production. Accordingly, specialism is considerably restricted by the news organisational culture. Lastly, specialism does not necessarily provide better journalism, especially in terms of supplying mobilising information to guide audiences out of their grievances caused by government's mishandling of public policies.;The current news organisational routines of Korean newspapers is related more closely to resisting changes rather than bridging the individuals of news organisations with newly emerging environments, and these routines do not provide effective systems for the newsgathering activities of specialist reporters.

Abstract:
The aim of this research is to examine the changing nature of risks that face journalists and media workers in the world's difficult, remote and hostile environments, and consider the 'adequacy' of managing hostile environment safety courses that some media organizations require prior to foreign assignments. The study utilizes several creative works and contributions to this area of analysis, which includes a documentary film production, course contributions, an emergency reference handbook, security and incident management reviews and a template for evacuation and contingency planning. The research acknowledges that employers have a 'duty of care' to personnel working in these environments, identifies the necessity for pre-deployment training and support, and provides a solution for organizations that wish to initiate a comprehensive framework to advise, monitor, protect and respond to incidents. Finally, it explores the possible development of a unique and holistic service to facilitate proactive and responsive support, in the form of a new profession of 'Editorial Logistics Officer' or 'Editorial Safety Officer' within media organizations. This area of research is vitally important to the profession, and the intended contribution is to introduce a simple and cost-efficient framework for media organizations that desire to implement pre-deployment training and field-support – as these programs save lives. The complete proactive and responsive services may be several years from implementation. However, this study demonstrates that the facilitation of Managing Hostile Environment (MHE) courses should be the minimum professional standard. These courses have saved lives in the past and they provide journalists with the tools to "cover the story, and not become the story."

Nik, Hasan Nik Norma. "The Representation of Environmental News: A Comparative Study of the Malaysian and New Zealand Press." Thesis, University of Canterbury. School of Political Science and Communication, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/1904.

Abstract:
This comparative study examines trends in the representation of the environment in Malaysian and New Zealand newspapers over an eight year period. By comparing the two media contexts, it explored the role of journalism’s occupational norms, of the relationship between journalists and sources and of media ownership in determining the quality of news coverage of the environment. The sample was made up of eight mainstream newspapers which were selected based on biggest circulation figures, sampled in 1996, 2000 and 2004. The four Malaysian newspapers, all nationally distributed, were the English-language papers The New Straits Times and The Star, and the Malay-language papers Berita Harian and Utusan Malaysia. The four New Zealand newspapers, all regionally distributed, were The Press, The Dominion Post, The New Zealand Herald and The Otago Daily Times. The study employed content analysis as the prime method to observe trends in environmental news; while in-depth interviews with 40 respondents were used to verify from subjects’ experiences the various forces that might cause the trends. Major content analysis findings were that environmental news is underrepresented in both countries and that the news patterns in the two countries are quite similar. The study raised questions about the quality of the news, with much of the coverage being conflict-framed, one-source event stories, with high dependency on government officials. These problems were less acute in New Zealand. Trends were largely stable across the three years. The most significant change in Malaysian coverage was an increase in the use of the public and scientists as sources over time. Interviews revealed some differences between New Zealand and Malaysia in journalists’ awareness of organizational determinants of news, editorial policies towards the environment, sources criticisms of journalists’ laziness, but also many common problems, including journalists’ lack of knowledge about environmental issues and science. In Malaysia, government control of the news and editors’ self-censorship of sensitive news was identified as a problem. The study concludes that newspapers in both countries do not operate as information providers or educators, but most of the time are reactive towards environmental issues.

"Underreported Stories on Climate Change and Coral Reefs in These Times of Diminishing International Reporting| Mining the Scholarly Literature Through Regular Annotated Bibliographies." Abstract:
<p> The goal of this project is to explore solutions to the increasingly difficult challenge of covering international environmental topics, such as coral reefs and climate change, during times of constrained budgets, shrinking environmental reporting, and disappearing foreign news bureaus. In this context of limited resources, this study explores whether the periodic bibliographic review of scholarly literature may offer a low-expense avenue for news organizations to sustain or even increase the breadth and depth of coverage of these important topics. This study compares coverage of coral reefs and climate change in scholarly journal articles (2007&ndash;2011) to those in the popular press (2007&ndash;2012) using the <i>New York Times </i> (<i>NYTimes</i>) as an exemplar of the latter. The extra year in the latter was to allow for a possible time lag in information moving from the scholarly literature to the popular press. Articles on coral reefs and climate change identified in the scholarly literature (239) revealed numerous possibilities for stories that were not covered in the 22 annotated articles on this topic that appeared in the <i>NYTimes.</i> Whereas the most frequently discussed topics in the scholarly literature were the relationship between herbivorous fish and coral health, sea surface temperatures (SST), coral bleaching, and the resilience, recovery, and acclimation processes of coral reef ecosystems, the <i>NYTimes's</i> articles focused on conservation, tourism, SST, and broad discussion of climate change and how it might affect coral reef ecosystems. Additionally, of the 22 <i>NYTimes </i> articles on coral reefs and climate change, only three (14%) included hyperlinks to scholarly articles and 12 (55%) included at least one scientific reference. Overall, this study demonstrates that during these times of declining resources for on-the-spot reporting, scholarly literature represents an affordable but currently underutilized means for news organizations to continue providing wide ranging and detailed coverage of international environmental issues. </p>

Koro, Emmanuel. "Evaluating coverage of the environment: a comparative study of the observations of academics and journalists." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/64888.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is a comparative analysis of the way that academics and journalists evaluate media coverage of news about the environment. The purpose is to gain insight into the kind of contributions that each of these groups can make to debates about the role that such coverage should play within processes of public deliberations about the environment. The dissertation begins by establishing theoretical terms of reference for assessing discussions of the journalistic coverage of the environment. It proposes that it is of value to consider the conceptualisation, within such discussions, of credible knowledge about the environment and, more particularly, to establish whether such conceptualisation is based within a positivist, interpretive, or critical realist paradigm. It is demonstrated that each of these epistemological traditions brings valuable perspectives to the discussion of journalism about the environment within such literature. It is, however, the positivist perspective that remains dominant, and this limits the extent to which the potential of the other two epistemological positions are fully realized. It is also demonstrated that there is a tendency, within this literature, to focus on the performance of individual journalists with minimal attention to the particularities of institutional and social context. It is proposed that this tendency results from the adherence to a positivist approach to the evaluation of journalism. The dissertation then describes the design and implementation of the empirical component of the study - dealing with decisions made about the overall methodological framing, the choice of method, the fieldwork plan and the approach to analysis. It is explained that the aim of the empirical component was to examine South African print journalists’ discussions of coverage of the environment in their own publications, and to compare such discussion to that which is represented in the academic literature. The dissertation then presents a summary of the themes that emerged from the analysis of the interview material that formed part of this empirical work. It is demonstrated that the evaluation of coverage of the environment, as articulated by the research participants, is informed by many of the assumptions and values that can be identified within academic literature. Such evaluation is, furthermore, similarly informed by a positivist, interpretive and critical treatment of knowledge - with, again, a tendency for the positivist position to dominate. One important difference is that the research participants include more references to institutional context. It is proposed, however, that the tendency to prioritise a positivist epistemological framing continues to place limitations on the extent to which the participants are able to fully articulate their knowledge about such context.

Abstract:
The majority of earlier studies on media and the environment have concentrated on media contents, effects, and associated problems and limitations. The focus here on 'approaches to improvement' advances research in this field a step forward. This research proposes three broad 'approaches to improvemen' and undertakes four case studies to provide an exploration of their potentials. First is the 'educational approach' of building journalists' knowledge. Two cases studies illustrate the high potentials of this approach. Assessment of a mid-career training initiative in environmental reporting reveals positive impacts on journalists' knowledge, reporting skills, and job satisfaction. Evaluation of a university journalism module on sustainability shows increases in students' understanding of the meaning and multidimensional nature of sustainability, and their appreciation of the need for enhancing public awareness through media coverage. Second is the 'social responsibility approach' of media receptiveness towards a more responsible role in communicating these issues. An analysis of newspersons' views reveals partial support for this approach – although they were somewhat unreceptive to media environmental policies as a way of expressing social responsibility, they tended to be receptive towards an educative role. However, journalistic routines and norms may restrict an educative approach to news reporting. Third is the 'message framing approach' of employing effective and persuasive communication strategies in the framing of mediated information to influence understanding and perception. An experimental assessment of an information campaign on 'sustainable consumption', designed based on this approach finds some increases in community understanding and concern; thus, illustrating the potentials of this approach. Finally, drawing from the findings of the case studies and other observations in the literature the study identifies the interdependencies between the three approaches and the interconnected network of other influencing factors that are likely to determine their success – thus providing a clearer perspective of their viability in the real world.

Abstract:
This thesis explores how peace journalism (PJ) translates into practice in the Kenyan media environment. Through the personal accounts of practicing reporters in Kenya, this research reveals the challenges and opportunities Kenyan journalist-participants faced while covering the 2013 presidential election. Through their personal experiences, this research reveals reporters were working in an exceptionally challenging media environment; one significantly shaped by the 2007 election and post-election violence. Participants identified numerous constraints that shaped their reporting practices, including structural constraints within their newsrooms and societal constraints in relation to ethnic identity. This thesis concludes that PJ has yet to offer sufficient concrete or practical solutions addressing these influencing factors, largely because of an overestimation of the agency journalists possess. Therefore, this research validates an existing body of research that suggests there is a need for PJ to consider factors outside of journalists themselves, which may constrain their work. The objective of the research is not to discredit the value of the tools PJ offers, but rather draw attention to the notion that those tools alone are insufficient.

Abstract:
This study examined environmental reporters and their attitudes toward the stories they cover. Sixteen journalists, from across the United States, who reported either full-time or part-time were asked to participate in a Q study by sorting fifty-four statements. On an 11point distribution grid from most disagree (-5) to most agree (+5).The statements were selected from a model of short term and long-term problems facing the environmental reporter. Issues raised in the statements included topics surrounding the beat. For example, do journalists who report on the environment feel frustrated by the short-term vision of reporting? Do they feel they are watchdogs for their community when reporting about environmental issues?Research revealed three factors that were labeled the "Watchdogs", the "Company People," and the "Frustrated Reporter." This study revealed that environmental reporting has emerged into a legitimate "beat" in the past thirty years. There is also a large gap between scholarly research has found and what the environmental reporter faces on a day-to-day basis while out in the field.<br>Department of Journalism

Abstract:
A temática ambiental é, simultaneamente, simples e complexa. The environmental theme is both simple and complex. O corpus se constitui de exemplares representativos da mídia impressa, com ênfase para os veículos de maior circulação e influência no Brasil: Folha de S. Paulo e O Globo, em maior escala, e O Estado de S. Paulo e Veja<br>Abstract: This work aims at analyzing the discourse on the environment in the Brazilian media, with emphasis on global warming. The main reference is the publicity of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's fourth report, the AR-4, in February 2007. The objective is to investigate the ways the scientific and the political discourses circulate in the main printed media as well as to verify up to what extent they influence one another, involving scientific, economic and political issues. The French Discourse Analysis (AD) was used as the theoretical reference. One of the most important issues identified was the sensationalist bias on the IPCC's conclusions. Linguistic formulations such as "apocalypse", "chaos", "catastrophe" and other related expressions have been used profusely. What AR 4 pointed as "unequivocal" about global warming, the media read and offered to be read as "irreversible". Another important aspect concerns the attempts to discredit the IPCC, especially in what became known as Climategate and the "wrong predictions" for the melting of Himalayan glaciers. Controversies also reverberated in the Brazilian scientific community. Terms such as "alert" vs "eco-terrorism" and their paraphrases, confirming or refuting the IPCC's analyzes, circulated in articles written by renowned scientists, bringing to light the presence of the political debate in the scientific discourse. We analyzed how these statements appear coming from the so-called scientific discourse, being thus legitimated, which presuppose the delegitimation of the other. It is essential to recover the notion of discursive formation (DF) in order to understand the different meanings in the functioning of the discourses, since by observing the conditions of production and by checking the functioning of memory; one can refer the meaning to a determined FD to try to understand the meaning(s) of what is said. In the task of questioning the historical traces of the constitution of meaning, it is necessary to reflect on the role of science in society and the role of science dissemination, via journalism, and the notion of objectivity as a strategy to cover up the subjectivism and other interests that constitute the processes of signification of these discourses. Science, like the news - and as news - is also produced from economic interests, and it is important to discuss when it is convenient to disseminate science and how it happens. Our analysis concluded that the focus of the discussion on global warming is the economic issue, focused mainly by the confrontation between developed and developing countries. Although most countries recognize the need to establish goals for reducing GHG emissions, while major emitters refuse to sign global agreements, any attempt at negotiation is a priori a "failure". The concepts of language, discourse, text, subject, ideology, marks and properties of discourses and of constitution-formulation-circulation were critical to support the theoretical considerations proposed in this work. The corpus consisted of representative samples of the print media, with an emphasis on groups with the largest circulation and influence in Brazil: Folha de S. Abstract:
To fight climate change, people need to change their behaviours towards emitting fewer greenhouse gases and build a system that is resilient towards the future shocks that climate change will create. Education can be seen as a key factor in behaviour change. Climate change education, in particular, provides people with the knowledge they need to transition towards a more sustainable state. Education does not only involve giving people information on natural and social systems, though: Since climate change can potentially threaten life on earth, it evokes strong emotional responses, such as depression and helplessness. When students feel that they cannot do anything about climate change, when they feel hopeless and pessimistic, they are less likely to engage in pro-environmental behaviour. Even if they have adequate knowledge of what to do. This constitutes the gap between cognitive and emotional learning where I enter with my study. With an online survey addressed to German grammar school pupils and university students (N = 438), I examine how the design of content on climate change can influence the perception of content. I used techniques of presenting content from Constructive Journalism to write five short texts on climate change for half of the participants. The other half represented a control group that read texts using the opposite of these constructive techniques of presenting. The participants answered questions regarding the two dimensions of learning: cognitive, and emotional. Within the emotional dimension, I asked students about their feelings of engagement, hope, depression, self-efficacy, and collective efficacy toward climate change. Constructive techniques of presenting content influence mainly the emotional dimension of learning, not the cognitive dimension and not the feeling of cognitive engagement either. The study showed, however, that if students understand the challenges of climate change well, they showed to be more prone toward feelings of depression. Teachers can engage with these negative feelings by including such framings as solutions-orientation, community-orientation, or long-term trends. While keeping cognitive learning and engagement at the same level, teachers can increase the positive emotions students have towards the content by designing it constructively. This study provides a way to encourage behavioural change in young people that is easier than transforming the entire global educational system. The insights can also be used for the broader public. Empowering people through information can inspire them to take action for mitigation and adaptation.

Abstract:
Abstract The research examines public debate related to mines in Northern Finland. The material is texts about Kavitsa and Talvivaara mines published in Helsingin Sanomat, Kaleva, Lapin Kansa and Kainuun Sanomat. The work creates an analytical overview of writing about mines and considers possible changes in the style. The problem set out in the dissertation is especially linked to the practices for producing environmental journalism. The background for the case study is a more general question of how financial projects affecting the environment are handled in the media. The material is approached with a frame analysis. The analysis is three-tiered: first we identify the main frames that structure the writing, then the interim frames that specify the main frames and finally the sub frames that sums up the viewpoints are identified. The work also compares texts based on different featured voices and examines the changes the first years of operation have generated in the public treatment of mines. Three main frames were identified in the material: a financial, an environmental and a safety main frame. In texts classified as belonging to the financial frame, the mines were mainly examined as financial phenomena. The environmental frame highlighted the environmental impact of mining and environmental protection. Within the safety frame, the texts examined health effects of mining emissions. The main frames were divided into eight interim frames from which 27 sub frames were derived. Based on the material, newspaper writing about northern mines is dual. Contrasting financial and environmental main frames were used nearly as much. There were, however, paper and mine-specific differences in how the main frames were divided. Kevitsa was usually approached from the financial viewpoint, while Talvivaara was more commonly determined through environmental effects. The financial frame was featured relatively most in Lapin Kansa. Helsingin Sanomat was most keen to construct the environmental frame. Mining industry representatives, journalists and politicians had most defining power in mining texts. The media treatment of Talvivaara changed over time and became clearly more negative, while the change for Kevitsa was positive<br>Tiivistelmä Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Pohjois-Suomen kaivoksiin liittyvää julkista keskustelua.

Abstract:
Given the environmental crisis that challenges the contemporary society, bringing with it a sense of urgency for changes in direction and worldviews, the media has a role of mediating meanings in the social construction process of environmental problems. The main objective of this research is to analyze the environmental news of Jornal Notícias, in view of the potential of this newspaper to contribute in the environmental awareness of Mozambican society. The theoretical framework dialogues with constructionist theories of journalism, sociology of journalism, environmental journalism, the agenda-setting theory and content analysis. We use the methodology of content analysis in order to check the most common genres in coverage; the types of news sources used; the environmental issues in the public agenda and the ability to make society aware of environmental problems. Among the results, it was found, for example, environmental coverage is based primarily on official sources - present in 69% of the analyzed texts. We conclude that the quality of environmental news coverage in the Jornal Notícias, from the points of view of the environmental journalism criteria and the pedagogical function of journalism, proved deficient. The published articles do not have a deep and questioning approach able to point out ways and solutions to cope with the environmental problems in Mozambican society. In short, we can say the paper´s contribution in the agenda-setting and social awareness of environmental problems in Mozambique is weak.

Abstract:
This doctoral submission grew out of a series of long form documentaries that I wrote, produced, and directed between 1993 and the present. The films, which were broadcast on US television's PBS network, all deal with scientific, medical, or environmental issues that developed into prominent national and international controversies. DVDs and scripts of the seven programs are provided along with a detailed overview. The submission is organized as three projects and an overview. 1. Project One (discussed in chapters 3-7) consists of three documentaries: the first about a novel therapy for autism ; the second dealing with the alleged health effects of power line electromagnetic fields ; and the third focused on the silicone breast implant controversy. 2. Project Two (discussed in chapters 8-11) consists of programs on nuclear energy, Gulf War Syndrome, and genetically modified foods. 3. Project Three (discussed in chapters 12-14) features a two-hour special investigation of global warming. 4. The Overview, Communicating Controversy in the Mass Media not only provides an overarching analysis of the portfolio of films and the attendant theoretical issues, but also serves to summarize the works themselves. In the Project sections of the written overview (chapters 3-14), the analysis is interwoven with extracts from the various documentaries. This portfolio and overview tells the evolving story of a body of work at the intersection of documentary, investigative journalism and science. It reveals the journey of one producer who started out with an interest in unpacking complex controversies, but became increasingly fascinated with the psychological and political dimensions of these narratives. Whether a particular controversial belief holds up under scrutiny is undoubtedly important. But there are other fascinating questions: why do people adopt such beliefs in the first place; why do individuals cling to their beliefs in the face of contrary scientific evidence; and what roles do special interests and the media play in amplifying or attenuating the public's hopes and fears? This portfolio and overview, therefore, not only examine a series of high profile controversies, but go further by: explaining the process by which these topics were turned into documentaries; exploring the way humans analyze, perceive and communicate benefits and risks; and critically examining the validity and ethical standing of modern television journalism. This submission represents a significant contribution to knowledge in several ways. First this series of in-depth, original investigations of environmental and health controversies from one producer is unparalleled in broadcast journalism. Second, the overview's analysis synthesizes and extends a wide range of social science research on risk assessment, risk perception and risk communication and applies this research to the featured controversies and the media's role in them. Third, the portfolio and overview reveal how a blend of documentary, journalism and science is an especially effective way of advancing public understanding of and engagement with modern scientific controversies and goes on to suggest some exciting new directions for communicators. Finally, the case studies in this portfolio provide a basis of knowledge about how communicators can effectively use audiovisual media to navigate the world of risks and benefits that permeates many of society's most crucial policy dilemmas.

Abstract:
This research examined Audubon magazine's representations of Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Textual and image analysis spanned the years 1960 to 2002. Text and images were analyzed using cultural studies methods of critical textual analysis, critical discourse analysis, and ethnographic content analysis. Some of these representations were compared to other environmental magazines. Analysis included nature writing and news stories that covered the Keep America Beautiful Campaign, the use of eagles by Native Americans, the Nez Perce Wolf recovery project, the U'wa struggle against oil companies, and other issues. Contributors utilizing nature writing genre often utilized brief references to Indigenous peoples. These references provided a way to make points about nature, identities, and Indigenous peoples. I concluded that the imagery was not monolithic across time or across a particular topic. The "ecological Indian" image was both challenged and reinforced. A vast array of Indigenous images supported the magazine's goals, one goal being the encouragement of activism among readers. Letters-to-the-editor served as a dialogic space for perspectives not represented in the magazine's articles.

Abstract:
Tampouco se considera que o jornalismo alternativo para a QAA seja a única forma de contribuição jornalística para o enfrentamento da problemática ambiental da Amazônia.<br>This doctorate thesis describes the fundaments of the conception and planning - and the process regarding its enablement, together with its politics and costs - of the constitutive intervention of an alternative media in the Amazon society. By using empirical and technical data, the object of this thesis refers to the process of creation of an alternative journalistic media: the Environmental News Agency for the Amazonia (ANAM). As a means of communication, the objective of ANAM is to stimulate and to promote the debate about the Environmental Question of Amazonia (QAA), by broadening its democratic sense and by contextualizing it towards a criticism of the hegemonic vision about economic development, a vision that belongs to the capitalist interests of the global process of production. The development of an editorial project for the ANAM, its construction as an online channel of communication and as a university extension program in an Amazon public university have evidenced that the intervention proposal can be enabled through the strategic conditions in which it inheres. These strategic conditions are based on the following assumptions: it is possible to contribute to the conservation of the Amazon rainforest through journalism; the QAA contextualizes itself in the panorama of a global environmental crisis, which is real; the debate about the relationships between the aforementioned assumptions should be seen as pivotal for the promotion of the conservation of Amazonia. Nonetheless, in order to be enabled, the contribution of journalism to the conservation of Amazonia hinges on other sociopolitical processes, since the media products are not direct agents of environmental conservation. That notwithstanding, the alternative journalism for the QAA cannot be seen as the unique way of contributing journalistically for addressing the environmental problem of Amazonia.
