Properties of nanomaterials are known to be size dependent and generally are very different from those of the corresponding bulk. Such behaviour, which is strongly system and structure dependent, allows one to tune material’s properties by varying their dimensions. Thus, understanding size-dependent properties of nanoparticles and mechanisms taking place at the nanoscale is fundamental for the improvement of existing materials and for the designing of mo

However, the use of high amount of Active Ingridient (AI) for seeds coating is causing concern about negative effects to non-target animals. Pollinators insects are exposed to contaminated pollen and nectar, but also herbivore insects are exposed through contaminated leaf. In addition, these insecticides can leach from fields and contaminate

Hickey, Joseph D. "Studies of normal and deficient colour vision with relevance to occupational environments." Thesis, City University London, 2015. http://openaccess.city.ac.uk/15009/.

Abstract:
The studies described in this thesis aim to assess the importance of normal colour vision in visually demanding, colour-related tasks that are often safety-critical and aim to improve our understanding of how congenital deficiencies can affect the processing of colour signals and the corresponding changes in visual performance. The first study compares the colour vision requirements within different professional environments. 519 subjects were tested: 141 normal trichromats, 268 deutans and 110 protans. All subjects carried out the Ishihara 38-plate test, the CAD test and the Nagel anomaloscop

Halley, Fraser. "Perceptually relevant browsing environments for large texture databases." Thesis, Heriot-Watt University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10399/2562.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the development of a large database of texture stimuli, the production of a similarity matrix re ecting human judgements of similarity about the database, and the development of three browsing models that exploit structure in the perceptual information for navigation. Rigorous psychophysical comparison experiments are carried out and the SOM (Self Organising Map) found to be the fastest of the three browsing models under examination. We investigate scalable methods of augmenting a similarity matrix using the SOM browsing environment to introduce previously unknown texture

Abstract:
While the politics of the institutional location and physical environment of the writing center is not a new issue, the majority of this scholarship does not adequately consider tutors' and tutees' perceptions regarding these issues. The purpose of my study, then, was to understand if and how the institutional location and / or physical environment within a writing center affects the tutors' and tutees' perception of the writing center and / or affects the dynamic of a peer tutoring session. The participants in my study were volunteer tutors and tutees who had worked or been tutored at one o

Abstract:
<p> Nitrous acid (HONO) is a photochemical source of hydroxyl radical that plays an important role in initiating radical reactions leading to photochemical air pollution and aerosol formation in the lower atmosphere. Field studies suggest nocturnal and daytime HONO sources that stem from heterogeneous reactions on environmental surfaces. However, the mechanisms are not well-understood and atmospheric models under-predict daytime HONO levels by 30&ndash;50%. The main aim of this research is to examine proposed nocturnal and daytime sources with a focus on elucidating the mechanisms of HONO form

Abstract:
Antibiotics are essential drugs in modern medicine. After consumption antibiotics are excreted in unmetabolized form in the urine and reach our sewage treatment plants (STP). STP are not able to degrade all antibiotics leading to release of antibiotics into the aquatic environment. Aquatic animals are thus continuously exposed to antibiotics. This study involved assessment of the toxicity of eight antibiotics previously detected in the river Fyrisån, Uppsala, Sweden, in developing zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos up to day six of age. The experiments included assessment of embryonal toxicity fo

Mitchell, David Ross. "Environmental factors relevant to the rising incidence of gastro-oesophageal reflux disease." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/30793/.

Full text
Abstract:
Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) is one of the commonest chronic conditions in the western world with a reported prevalence of 10-20% in Europe and the USA. The disease involves an interplay between factors promoting reflux of gastric juice and failure of defensive forces designed to neutralise the resulting acidity. Transient lower oesophageal relaxations, the acid pocket and the presence of a hiatus hernia are important factors. Acid reflux can cause benign oesophageal injury, including oesophagitis, oesophageal ulceration and peptic structuring, as well as malignant complications li
