Abstract:
This PhD responds to a two fold problem with the philosophy of design and the practice of design. The philosophical problem is stated as the discrepancy between a dominant philosophical framework that orders the world according to eternal essences and the actual conditions of the world in which we exist: the conditions of becoming and of flux. Commencing with a critique of the western metaphysical tradition of statics this research project proposes that we need to find a way of describing an evolutionary model of practice, and by so doing to provide a revitalised narration of process. Consequently, the PhD explores the meanings of process through a critical examination of an ensemble of projects created by the author. Within this framework, a number of questions are posed in order to explore the proposition of a process practice. These questions are: What is process? How does one think process? Indeed, how do we get to grasp change? What are the consequences of process thinking on the practices of design, their fields of operation, and their productions? And, how can the thematising of process contribute to the design of the constructed environment, as well as reconfigure the practices of design? This thematising of process is argued to involve a necessary address to the constitutive and interrelated characteristics of process: space/time, movement, change, form and matter. Such an address is also seen to problematise the status of the object, the paradigms of representation, the modes of creation, the economies of exchange, and the structures of community, and to offer a modality of practice which would re-imagine the forms of social exchange to offer an ethical alternative to the tyranny of supply and demand, and thereby reconfigure the potential for dwelling. Making an overview of the discourses and practices engaging with theories of becoming, this thesis argues that almost all of these re-inscribe statics and that consequently the practice of design seems to drag behind our understanding of the world. Through a meditation on dis/appearance, in which the dynamics of being and becoming and the restless ambiguity of the gap are examined, the work establishes a process vocabulary, and makes clear through a material practice, the domains of process thinking, its inclinations, and the kinds of operations and procedures that flourish there. Foregrounding the fertile character of process practice, the PhD then proceeds to introduce notions of the movement-form, the duration-form, the transformational-form, the geometry of encounter, and to argue for physical form as an in-movement poise. Advocating new modes of approach and of attentiveness, and demonstrating new generative methods, this PhD argues that process thinking is not simply an operational stance, but an ethical position that identifies a field of care, and that consequently the design practices be expanded by taking seriously the relationship between process thinking and place making. Thus, this thesis concludes by advocating a mode of place making which, rather than reproduce planned environments as systems of control, configures place as the discursive contested place of encounter and exchange.

This thesis is an investigation into the construction of ephemeral phenomena through material means and at multiple scales. Studies utilized abstract methods that are not immediately relatable to the scale of occupable architecture but at the same time convey inhabitability. These investigations informed the design of an art gallery for Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and the town of Blacksburg, Virginia.

Abstract:
Music, it has been shown, has the potential to both create social cohesion and encourage conflict resolution (Koelsch, Offermanns, & Franzke, 2010). In a city with deep roots in slavery, music may be more powerful than language or the toppling of monuments to help create a cultural identity that every demographic can fit. Not only can music improve mood in an individual, but musical contagion affects large groups at once. Creating a space to equalize access to and share the experience of music—both making and appreciation—would give the city an opportunity for reconciliation and community bonding. While a universal quality of humanity, music is unfortunately not equally accessible to all races and ages. Children in low socioeconomic schools and aging adults are two populations that are less likely to engage in musical opportunities due to prohibitive costs, lack of resources, diminished support, reduced funding, insufficient skills for participating in organized groups, and no access to spaces for playing (Deisler, 2011; Hallam, Creech, Varvarigou, & McQueen, 2012). A public music library could remove many of the prohibitive factors for marginalized populations outlined in prior research. To ensure that these populations are being served, a team of community members who lead a bi-weekly music-workshops for musicians of any age or level will be interviewed. Literature reviews of acoustics and spatial organization will help to inform design choices and practical considerations. Researching methods to reduce attrition in musical settings as well as projects that have successfully encouraged community engagement will be important aspects for design development. Determining and analyzing case studies via research and site visits will reveal tested solutions and offer feedback for how to improve upon existing examples. Touring the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts would be useful, and an application for funding will be submitted for traveling to New York. In an independent study class, design details specific to music libraries are being investigated with the assistance of an internationally recognized library design firm, which in turn is applying this research into current projects utilizing similar acoustical and storage needs. To address the imbalance in musical engagement, the space will accommodate renting instruments, checking-out scores, listening to audio recordings, and collaborating with other musicians. There will be practice studios available for use by individuals and ensembles, stacks, a café and lounge space to encourage leisure, and a community concert hall for performances. Music is a shared human experience, and access to learning and creating music should be accessible to all.

I am interested in the relationship between solidity and transparency, between permanence and ephemerality, in the context of the modern city. This thesis is an exploration of transience and of social and phenomenal exchange, using music, and, more generally, sound, as a vehicle. The project is an alternative music school and performance center located in Harlem, in New York . The functions of the institution include a community music school for neighborhood youth, a cabaret, a conservatory for adult students of music, a radio station with recording studio, and a library/museum . There are a total of up to five performance venues, depending on the configuration of the facilities . The project aspires to changeability not merely to accommodate different performance scenarios but also to create a volume of space that is porous and alive, a landscape that is accessible to all urban bodies.

This thesis examines the ways in which sound installations aesthetically provide spatial encounters with a location, emphasizing ephemerality, multiplicity, and relationality. Informed by experimental sound practices, spatial studies, and theories in critical cartography, current conceptions of the sound map are challenged. Though the origins of the sound map date back to the 1970s soundscape movement, modern sound maps are online repositories of location recordings that are geo-referenced and navigated with the use of a digitized, aerial map. A critical analysis of sound maps argues for a more embodied, sociocultural, and dynamic spatio-sonic experience. Through lenses of sound, space, and cartography, this thesis interrogates such topics as: attentive listening, the notion of "sound art", location recording and phonography, acoustic ecology, the soundscape, resonance, the relationship between inscription, vibration, and transmission, site-specificity, map making and map use, bioregionalism, meteorology and the history of weather maps, radar, spaces of representation, proxemics, architecture, and embodiment. Through these different interrogations, the sound installation is understood as an aural cartographic process that suggests a multi-layered way of knowing about a location through sound. The organized, spatio-sonic encounter is an embodied synsonic mapping in practice -- a constant, fleeting, and relational process that engages the shifting circumstances of the world.

Abstract:
The architectural theorist and practitioner Bernard Tschumi asserts that enquiring and working at the limits of a discipline expands our knowledge and experience. Within this thesis I examine the limits of architecture as they relate to the non-material and the nonvisible elements of space. As Mark Wigley observes in his essay on atmosphere, architects, at different times, have sought to understand, capture and control the otherwise ungraspable aspects of space. The elusive nature of such ephemeral architectural aspects and elements makes them hard to manage and map. Their examination provides a challenging exercise within architectural research. Atmosphere is such an elusive element; as Zizek would call it, it is that which remains always as a backdrop to daily life. It seems to vanish when subjected to conscious scrutiny. Non-visual sensations such as sounds, smell, textures, temperature, clearly constitute invisible elements that are notoriously difficult to represent. As a further example, event, the way in which a space is or could be deployed or inhabited over time, provides another unpredictable and ambiguous design consideration. Spaces relate to performance. The performance of a place constitutes its nature, character, function and meaning. However, the complexity, changeability, and potentiality of spatial performance render it as something abstract and non-representable. As Steven Connor, and Jonathan Hill, amongst other theorists, observe, new media, electromagnetic fields, and digital gadgets, also constitute invisible elements of space. They create invisible fields, territories, links and boundaries, affecting everyday spaces and relationships. So a typology of the elusive and ephemeral characteristics of space would include: non-conventional materials, elements changing over time, electromagnetic fields, electronic equipment, nonvisually representable sensations, situations, processes and events. Attending closely to these themes reveals some key questions. Why do these themes appear (or re-appear) now, at this particular moment in history? How are they related to contemporary thought, practice, and to current shifts in society, culture and technological development? New technology, new means of representation, and emerging design media change both the way in which we inhabit space, and also the way in which we understand and represent it. Digital media allow us to record and represent time and duration. Hence, events and situations occurring over time can be documented and studied. Subsequently, new media can also function as a new tool to think about space, and for designing accordingly. As Marshall McLuhan claimed in the 1960s, the emergence of new digital media has caused a ‘shift in the sensorium’ and has readdressed the significance and role of experiencing and sensing other than through the visual sense. In this thesis I discuss in turn a series of limits and the qualities of the spaces that they reveal. Each chapter title is based on a binary and a theme that indicates its transgression: (a) the visual versus the non-visible – the sensuous (chapter 2), (b) the discourse about the formal versus the material – the performative (chapter 3), (c) the physical versus the digital – the hybrid (chapter 4). In order to examine these themes and explore the design potential they entail, I review relevant literature in parallel with the conduct of a series of design experiments. The experimental processes deployed are of three kinds: (1) mapping and documentation of sensory situations, (2) design experiments that challenge the issues discussed and (3) real-scale interventions that test some of the design ideas at a 1:1 scale and in an actual place. The latter includes a major installation at the 2009 Venice Biennale on the theme of Athens by Sound initiated and designed by a team involving the author.

Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] I have evaluated the effects of different types of ephemeral pools on the evolutionary dynamics of two large branchiopods in Australia, the clam shrimp Lynceus and the fairy shrimp Branchinella longirostris. Both shrimps are passive dispersers, relying on their sexually produced resting eggs for continuity of populations in time and space, although their actual dispersal ability remains speculative. The two currently recognised species of the genus Lynceus (L. tatei and L. macleyanus) are widespread across Australia, and they occupy a wide range of ephemeral fresh water habitats, while the fairy shrimp Branchinella longirostris is endemic to rock pools on granite outcrops in south-western Australia. Samples of populations were collected from a total of 96 ephemeral pools at 80 locations in New South Wales, Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia . . . This highlighted the contrast between the two species and their microhabitats, and implied that these microhabitats offered different opportunities for dispersal. These were identified as frequent disturbances of the clam shrimp’s egg-banks due to ‘wash-out’ effects during heavy rains and animal and human vectors attracted by the water stored in the deep pools. My comparative study shows that the difference in evolutionary dynamics observed between the two species was a consequence of their environmental interactions rather than of the microhabitats themselves. Similar to patterns detected in other passive dispersers with disjunct population distribution, evolutionary dynamics in Lynceus and B. longirostris seem to be a result of complex interactions among gene flow, population histories and ecology of their habitat. The results contribute to the emerging evidence that branchiopod crustaceans are poor dispersers and highlight the importance of local context in determining evolutionary processes within species.

Abstract:
Triggered by advanced technologies, physical structures are becoming increasingly efficient and vanish from the experienced space. Eventually, the main task of architects will shift to shaping and manipulating the atmosphere that is surrounding the dissolving physical reality of architecture. Any clear separation between interior and exterior starts to blur as every biological and metaphysical experience can be simulated in any given environment. A phenomenon accelerated by efficient communication technologies, merging the analog and digital space. Not only profane architecture will be affected, but also the very intimate setting of our living habitats. The proposal of a prototypical future dwelling explores the potential to both implement spatial simulations and to manipulate cultural rituals in our living environments. By communicating through the medium of post-processed pencil drawings, the project dares to predict the future relation of serving and served spaces to our body and mind.

Abstract:
Architecture is a narrative of places and the settlement of knowledge and human motivation. The built environment offers the space for that representation in each monumental, scenographic or pragmatic singularity. Focussing on the site of the Exhibition of the Portuguese World 1940, in the monumental place of Belem the thesis will analyse one Monument, one Ephemeral museum and a pragmatic building, a restaurant. The Monument to' Prince Henry the Navigator was resolved by Cottinelli Telmo's design for the ephemeral Monument to the Discoveries. Rebuilt in 1960, for the commemoration of the 5th Centennial of Prince Henry's death, it became an "Icon" of the city of Lisbon. The continuity of a set of ephemeral pavilions for the centennials exhibitions has materialized as the Museum of Popular Art, while the water mirror restaurant has survived despite numerous transformations. Public spaces provide for the synthesis between meanings and values that determine, the continuity of the built heritage. Between architectonic theory and practice, concepts and urban reality, the knowledge spectrum is huge. The ephemeral context of the exhibition allowed for creativity in the way Man related himself to the World through architectural representation.

Abstract:
That's why it is a place much desired by both the resident population, as well as by outsiders. Its history is constantly marked by moments of great stability e prosperity, which quickly change, provoking considerable changes to the population and reflecting itself in an accelerated transformation of urban and architectural morphology. A site with an ancestral availability of natural resources, which enhanced its human occupation and its significance as a place. Ecological, environmental and cultural values of great wealth and paradoxical fragility are revealed, which can only be apprehended and invoked, as long as they are allowed to exist and be preserved, in a constant natural balance. Facing the pre-existing ephemerality and dynamics, such as architectural concepts capable of provoking new approaches to the project, validating the knowledge and understanding of the territory and ensuring multidisciplinarity in an integrated perspective of efficiency and sustainability, turns out to be a great opportunity for derivation and reunion with the intrinsic values of the place, allowing to project new horizons.

ABSTRACT: Faced with a society that is always changing, at a rate in which cities are not always able to respond to in a timely manner, the work at hand emerges, whose objective is to solve the problem of urban voids. While there is no direct action in these spaces, these can be inserted again into the city dynamics through a temporary low-cost structure. In this way, the work explores concepts such as urban emptiness, requalification and ephemeral architecture, and then responds to the challenge in question. An ephemeral, modular, removable, and affordable structure is proposed. The base module undergoes some transformations and adaptations and is replicated and adapted to various types of urban voids. This structure of cultural support can be a space for larger shows, such as a theatre, or spaces of more informal and smaller shows, such as concerts. As an example of this situation diversity it is explored a specific implantation in an urban void in Marvila.

Abstract:
This dissertation intends to understand the architectural project implications in the moment of the execution of ephemeral works, and tries to elucidate the essential paradigms to this project due to the advanced stage of depredation found within the planets natural resources. However, even facing a bibliographic shortage on the theme, searching this thought, we will analyze three summer pavilions inside Serpentine Gallery, executed by well-known architects we believe that the concept in architecture remains in this work. The reading of these objects, non-verbally organized, needs a reference capable of elucidating the thought syntax that guides it, revealing the designer repertory through iconic and inkling data. In this moment, Charles Sanders Peirces theory is shown to be abundant, not only to reveal the architectural repertory and the projects paradigms that guide it, but also to find the way that these professionals turn their thoughts into matter through non-verbal architectural language. On the other hand, what is exhaustively seen throughout commercial events is the use of similar industrialized constructive systems, from which OCTANORM is the most known, what guarantees the continuity of the modern process and the elevation of the mounting an dismounting capability as the main value of the work. The hypotheses raised in here consider these systems as a manifestation of continuity and point to other architectures, still ephemeral, but disconnected to this dynamic and owners of specificities that characterize a particular field of study. The basis of this work, regarding the use of epistemology, features peircians semiotics a lot and, the fundamental bibliography, that gives the research an orientation, has its origin in the architecture philosophy and in the psychology of perception defended by many theorists.

In this thesis and in my graduation project, I am taking a closer look at the word temporary. It is an investigation in the transition between the two states: temporary and permanent. I am using the contrasting state permanent as an anti-pole to get perspective and to have a fair comparison. I want to give the state of temporarily a shape or a face and to define time through the material and design, like a time capsule. As an interior architect I am questioning the usage of the temporary in the architectural and giving it attention by using architecture, furniture, states and materials as my framework.

Abstract:
In recent years, "architects’ collectives" have occupied a significant part of the media space. Do we even know who they are and what they do? These are the two main questions to which we have tried to answer. A research is based on opportunities, mine was to be the co-founder in 2009 of one of these groups, Collectif Etc. I have been one of his main fanimators, and all this research has been based on this group. The first part enabled us to highlight a network of practitioners that we call "architects’ collective ", groups formed mainly by architects, whose goal is to promote citizen involvement in the processes of transformation of the cities, in order to create self-managed situations. Their methods of intervention correspond to the combination of the practice of residence, the use of self-construction and the production of ephemeral architectures. In a second part, we were able to formulate the hypothesis that these groups developed an original model of project practice, based on the construction of three matrices, which we called mythogenic, constructive, and political. For each of them, a historico-theoretical research has enabled us to form more complete definitions, characterizing a matrix practice of the project, favoring the involvement of the citizen. And if this model was built from the practice of these particular groups, we believe that it might be relevant to all practitioners wishing to involve various actors in the city's making processes

Charles Michel-Ange Challe (1716-1778) began as an History painter, a professor of geometry and perspective at the Royal Academy in Paris, before being appointed as Dessinateur de la Chambre et du Cabinet du roi. He was born among a family of Parisian craftsmen, with no link with the numerous dynasties of artists flourishing during this era. The way he pursued his life attest to his outstanding professional emancipation. At the same time, the personal life of the artist, whose background was very modest, attest to a certain social mobility, marked by many recognitions such as his academic affiliations, his links with the Nattier family and the exceptional progress of his economic, cultural and social situation. Punctuated by as many chaos as victories, the career of Michel-Ange Challe, alternately acting, subordinate, forced or emancipated, illustrate in many ways the situation of the parisian artists in the mid of the 18th century

Abstract:
The opening of the Academy of San Fernando in 1752 marks a turning point in the history of architecture in Spain. It quickly became a center of creation, debate and diffusion of a new architectural thought inspired by the European models. The Academy introduced a new architectural culture from a pedagogical model complemented by experiences such as travel to Rome, and attested in architectural competitions. Alongside these artistic transformations, from the 1770s on, the Academy took on an incredible power in defining the profession of architect and control of Spanish public architecture. This is where the relationship between the Academy and the urban environment intensified, especially in Madrid, where a great process of embellishment and equipment began during the same period. In this context of exchange between academic thought and the transformation of Madrid, the public authorities of the late eighteenth century, structured around a management administration of the architectural project renovations, encouraged the construction of a series of great monuments, through which we can see the theoretical and stylistic evolution of the new Spanish classicism of the end of the Enlightenment. In 1808, the incorporation of Madrid into the First Empire system marks a turning point in this process begun since the 1770s. Madrid is then the subject of profound institutional, urban and architectural transformations that brings it closer to European experiences, completing previous experiences and mark the subsequent evolution of this capital from the Restoration of 1814

Abstract:
The abandonment as opportunity Robinson Factory: The instant in the construction of a provisory time This research aims to show architectural programs that question the reuse of places in the context of industrial heritage, through an architectural design, in a revitalization process. The aim is to look to models / actions that, starting with the abandonment problem, may answer to the post-industrial spaces transformations. The main goal is to create an approximation process to the problem of reuse, whose project design process finds in its production and operations forms a symbiosis between artistic practice, curatioral approach and architecture, in the development of a program to revitalize a place. The object of this study is part of a research project / research by design concerning the architectural complex Fábrica Robinson located in Portalegre, whose original appropriation of part of Convento de S. Francisco is today occupied by Espaço Robinson. The acknowledgment of this complex as a space placed in-between a recent past and a pending future marked the design proposed. A temporary design proposal whose concept establishes the validity of the temporary action, underlying to the act of reuse, creating new occupation programs, promoting new ideas and heritage definitions and thus given back meaning to the empry industrial structures. What to preserve and how to save may mark the importance of safeguarding this heritage and the prediction of its transmission to the future, set by the idea of preservation. The Fábrica Robinson and the urban regeneration of this area sets itself as a new opportunity to safeguard these architectural ensembles and enhance the value of the industrial heritage. This study intend to show the relationship between the program and a vacant place, through a temporary proposal, supported by the interdisciplinary debate and the hypothesis of design implementation that completes a void temporarily suspended.

Light, James J. "GPS ephemeris message broadcast simulation." Thesis, Monterey California. Naval Postgraduate School, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10945/2023.

Full text
Abstract:
The warfighter constantly needs increased accuracy from GPS and a means to increasing this accuracy to the decimeter level is a broadcast ephemeris message containing GPS satellite orbit and clock corrections. The ephemeris message is produced at the GPS MCS (Master Control Station) which receives GPS signal data from NGA and Air Force worldwide and uses sophisticated software to produce the orbit and clock corrections. The problem is getting the ephemeris message to the tactical user in a forward operating area. This thesis proposed a notional architecture for pushing the ephemeris message to the tactical user. It then modeled the architecture and simulated the broadcast of the ephemeris message to a tactical user using NETWARS. The baseline architecture was simulated and analyzed and then additional constraints were placed upon the network to simulate a real-world model. The simulation results demonstrated that the architecture was feasible for ephemeris message broadcast with the constraints on time intervals between broadcasts, residual traffic and message size.

Abstract: Due to the fierce competition between companies in a globalized market, promotional architecture has been developing steadily to meet the marketing needs of big and small companies. Meeting these clients' needs quickly and effectively has become a challenge for professionals in the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industries (AEC), hired to design and build stands in tenths of trade shows a year, following extremely tight schedules. Cases where the client, the designers and the builders are geographically apart are very common. In such cases, the use of New Information and Communication Technologies (NICT) help them in project development, allowing them to share documents and work simultaneously. Utilizing the World Wide Web (WWW) through the Internet has been crucial in this process, allowing for virtual collaboration sites (extranets) to help improve the quality of the projects, as well as the speed of its execution. The main objective of this research is to characterize trade show stands according to considerations determined by trade show promotional marketing and identify the technology utilized for support in the stands building process when its stakeholders work apart. In order to better understand this process, a field study was carried out, in which the exploratory research was conducted on the development of projects related to promotional architecture for EMBRAER (Empresa Brasileira de Aeronáutica) marketing department, located in São José dos Campos, SP. In that study it was analyzed how the projects of stands are developed when its stakeholders are working apart, focusing on two aspects concerning project quality: conceptual and management aspects. The former relate to project quality concerning to implicit and explicit needs, in which we analyzed important factors, following the theoretical framework presented as follows: briefing, project flexibility, reutilization capabilities, ease of assembling/disassembling and logistical agility. The latter aspects concern communication and management of the paperwork generated during the execution of the project and the technology involved in it. In order to collect the data needed for analysis, questionnaires and forms were distributed to the sector¿s designing and building outsourcing AEC companies. Results indicate that, even though these companies don¿t carry out their work according to the standards for project and development, they seek to meet the needs detected in this bibliographic research. The majority of the work developed by the companies researched follows traditional engineering processes; however, results also show that the use of NICT has been playing a very important role in project development and validation. Therefore, the use of project extranets can give an important contribution to project quality control and development

Abstract:
The Permo-Triassic lower Beaufort Group fluvial deposits extend over 100s of kilometres within the Karoo Basin, South Africa. A detailed study of the depositional architecture and stacking patterns of sand bodies within a 900 m thick succession has enabled interpretation of the controls on ancient river channel and overbank processes. Facies include very fine- to medium-grained sandstone, intra-formational conglomerate, mudstone and palaeosols. Channel-belts are dominated by upper flow regime structures, consistent with a flashy to ephemeral fluvial system. The overbank deposits comprise splays interbedded with purple, green and grey mudstone; these floodplain colour changes signify water table fluctuations. A hierarchy of channel-related elements has been established that recognises beds, bedsets, storeys, channel-belts, complexes and complex sets. Each channel-belt may be single- or multi-storey, whereby one storey represents the complete cut and fill cycle of a single migrating river, comprising bar accretion elements and channel-abandonment fill. The abandonment fill elements often consist of heterolithic plugs of climbing ripple-laminated very fine-grained sandstone, or interbedded claystone with siltstone. The Beaufort channel-belts preserve either lateral- or downstream-accretion patterns, or a combination. Each belt has either a lenticular or tabular geometry, recognisable by an erosional base overlain by intra-formational conglomerate lag and barform deposits. Genetically related channel-belts cluster to form complexes, of which two broad styles have been identified: Type A) laterally and vertically stacked channel-belts, and Type B) sub-vertically stacked channel-belts. There is evidence of localised clustering of sub-vertically stacked channel-belts adjacent to extensive overbank mudstone deposits. The apparent lack of a well-defined ‘container’ surface with mappable margins, suggests that this stacked channel-belt architecture represents an avulsion complex rather than a palaeovalley-fill. The lateral and stratigraphic variability in fluvial-overbank architecture is interpreted as the interplay of several controls. Allogenic forcing factors include, tectonic subsidence that influences accommodation, sediment supply, and high frequency climate cycles associated with the flashy discharge regime and expressed in the mudrock colour changes and distribution of palaeosols. The depositional river style, variability in channel-belt stacking patterns and compensational stacking of some channel-belt/splay complexes is interpreted to be the result of autogenic channel avulsion, supported by an absence of significant erosion. The relative merits of basin-axial trunk river and distributive fluvial system (DFS) models are assessed from detailed architectural and stratigraphic outcrop studies.

Abstract:
Aesthetic criticism very often has been overlooked and considered a lesser form. However, many interpretations, applications and discernments can be obtained from this kind of art writing. Using Osvaldo Sánchez's work as a case study, this thesis examines how writerly art criticism offers an active reading framework of the work of art by using philosophical, literary and poetic constructions. In this regard, I will see how the "writerly" condition has contributed compelling insights to the History of Aesthetics, highlighting the connections and disconnections between Sánchez and other writerly critics, which demonstrates the significance of developing a flexible, available and aesthetic learning model of art appreciation. I will analyze as well various models of experience, subjective and objective, that release certain "openness" as a premise for their existences. Here are included the Kantian sublime, Heidegger's ontological Being, the surrealist cultivation of chance, Kaprow's happenings, and the attitude of disinterest developed by the vanishing poets as defended by the scholar Rafael Hernández Rodríguez. I will show that, by choosing an accommodating approach to discover forms of knowledge, an assortment of valuable empirical content can be found. Finally, I investigate the writerly work of Cuban critic Osvaldo Sánchez that does not adopt a fixed critical pattern. Instead, Sánchez's art writing passes through fields, providing us with a heuristic methodology in which the aesthetic emerges not as a preconditioned set of principles/procedures, but as a true lived experience.

Architecture, as a human discipline, has as in its basis shaping of concrete spaces whose materialities resonate with both the geographical and anthropological environments. In this way, it could not have remain indifferent to the ethnographic turn in the arts, seeking new plasticities in the narratives of people. This dissertation results from the field of tectonic investigation expanded to the arts, where tools such as fieldwork enabled a methodological framework for the recentralization of the subject in contemporaneity times. Considering the identity potential of the Ovamuila, and their direct relationship with space and earth, we will try to demonstrate theoretically and plastically how the concept of the native gaze taken as a laboratory for experimentation of creative possibilities, unlocks constructive potentialities. The idea of transient habitat will also be presented as a reference to a temporal and historical dimension, whose criteria constitute the design conditions for a proposed site-specific artistic intervention. By observing the miscegenation between theoretical principles and practical experiences, the research advanced looking for plastic strategies to reconcile the studies associated with a particular culture, in this case the Ovamuila, to the tools of representation of the contemporary world, evident in the way different disciplinary areas converge in great area of human knowledge that is architecture.

The basic concept associated with the development of this dissertation is to insert the society in a prefab/modular way in order to adopt a posture and sustainable consumption habits for a period of housing. The document covers several topics that focus on pre-fabricated modular homes and the various types than can be obtained with only one type of housing. Depicts, describes and highlights aspects that should be incorporated in “good” modular building, such as the implementation of renewable and recyclable materials, as well as the elevation of the dwelling from the ground through metal shoes, and the inclusion of solar panels and heating water and wind fans, making the building sustainable and environment friendly. Focuses on the way that certain procedures, more or less complexity, can be inserted into people’s daily lives, at home and even in the same experiences with nature. Addressing specific issues and how the local context, materiality to be used, the appropriate means of transport, through the environment impact and ecological footprint that support the building. Define parameters of quality, cost and structure with regard to factors/concerns such as thermal comfort, acoustic and utilization of wind and water to supply the model. The modeling itself allows for different housing typologies that keep pace, and the same architecture’s reading.

Abstract:
In Portugal, accompanying other European nationalisms, emerged a revival of traditionalist architecture in the second half of the 30s of the twentieth century, which neutralized the practice of architectural modernism, rendered the modern architecture inoperable during the 40s and 50s, and led to the emergence of the so-called «soft Portuguese» slyle [estilo «português suave»]. In the historiography of Portuguese architecture, the role and responsibility of Raul Lino are not consensual in this process. However, critical hostility to modern architecture is present in Raul Lino's «Portuguese house» doctrine, and contributed to the inflection of modernist architects into traditionalism, which put an end to the so-called "ephemeral modernism." Raul Lino, in 1933, with the publication of the book Casas Portuguesas assumed an anti-internationalist activism and the leading role of criticism against Portuguese modernist architecture. His actions came to be conflictingly critical and he was eventually considered the censor of architecture with opposition actions taken in the official offices of the Regime against modern architecture. The Portuguese Regional Architecture Survey organized by the National Union of Architects in 1955, which gave rise to the publication of the book Arquitectura Popular em Portugal, 1961, [Popular Architecture in Portugal], deliberately presented without excesses of erudition or exaggeration of details, marks a turning point in the history of Portuguese architecture, concluding precisely that Portugal lacks unity in the field of architecture and that the existing diversity prevents one from admitting the existence of a «Portuguese Architecture» or a «Portuguese House». Although there is unanimity in considering that the Survey has put an end to the question of the «Portuguese house», it is not known any study in the discipline of architecture that has dealt with the understanding of the causes of the «Portuguese house» problem and the evolution of the conditions of the professional practice in the first half of the 20th century culminating in the need to carry out a study to the housing conditions of the regional architecture. The present thesis is intended to clarify that the degradation of these conditions, and the loss of conceptual freedom, in a context of professional dignity crisis, was largely determined by an ideological evolution of the doctrine of the «Portuguese house» that guided the traditionalist architecture of the late 30s to such an extent that only the creation of an instrument promoted by the National Union of Architects, with an overview of popular architecture in Portugal, could be able to overcome the constraints felt by the architects. One of the main objectives of the thesis is to determine and characterize a line of evolution of the research method of the Portuguese Regional Architecture Survey, trying to ascertain how some lines of thought proposed by Le Corbusier may have had repercussions in the development of that study.
