Abstract:
Due to its peculiarity and significance, occasional poetry occupies a special role in the literary output of Sibylla Schwarz. In her epithalamia, epicedia and other casual poems, in which she shows her thorough humanities education, one finds not only conventional, partly trite rhetorical figures, but also some interesting autobiographical references. The following article attempts to analyse the poet’s output with respect to the epigonic (imitative) character of her works both in the spirit of Opitz’s poetics and her own originality.

Abstract:
Critics generally agree that Statius’Silvae2.4, a poem about a dead parrot dedicated to Statius’ patron Atedius Melior, is modelled closely on Ovid'sAmores2.6, a poem about Corinna's dead parrot. In particular, many read Statius’ poem as picking up on the metapoetic strand in the Ovidian model, in which the parrot may be interpreted as a poet-figure, though they also note that Statius’ poem shows more of a concern for the tensions involved in a poet's relationship to his patron (and the emperor). I agree with this general interpretation of the poem and its metapoetic aspect; however, there are some oddities about the dead parrot and its relationship to itsdominusthat have not been fully explained by theories that equate the parrot with either Statius or a non-specific Flavian poet-figure and thedominuswith Atedius Melior or a similar patron-figure. For instance, why is the parrot dead, and why does Statius write an epicedium for it that is similar in tone to the epicedia for dead people inSilvae2? Why is the parrot's relationship to its master an ambiguous one such that his cage can be described as a prison (carcer, 2.4.15), and the master's grief over the parrot's death is never specifically mentioned? Finally, why does the parrot speak the name of Caesar instead of Atedius Melior, the friend of Statius to whom the poem is dedicated?

Abstract:
The occasional poems of Statius are an enticing field for critics interested in topics like the interaction of Greek and Roman culture or the relationship between public activities like government and private activities like writing poetry. Most recently John Henderson has explored these issues in Statius' poem for the consular Rutilius Gallicus (Siluae1.4). In this paper I will discussSiluae5.3, an epicedion for Statius' own father. Statius uses the occasion of writing the epicedion to celebrate his father's life as a teacher, writer and performer and, by extension, his own life too. In his poem Statius develops a portrait of himself and his father as Greeks in close sympathy with Roman values. Against a backdrop of teaching and performing Greek literature they value above all filial duty and the skills of Roman government. Yet literature does not remain consistently in the background. Because Statius' father was also his teacher and model in literature, Statius as the dutiful son celebrates his father's literary skill and defers to it. By extension, Statius defers also to the subjects of his father's teaching, the famous masters of Greek and Latin literature.

Abstract:
: Vascular diseases are the main reason for morbidity and mortality worldwide. As we know, the earlier phase of vascular diseases is endothelial dysfunction in humans, the endothelial tissues play an important role in inflammation, coagulation, and angiogenesis, via organizing ligand-receptor associations and the various mediators’ secretion. We can use many inflammatory non-invasive tests (flowmediated dilatation, epicedial fat thickness, carotid-intima media thickness, arterial stiffness and anklebrachial index) for assessing the endothelial function. In addition, many biomarkers (ischemia modified albumin, pentraxin-3, E-selectin, angiopoietin, endothelial cell specific molecule 1, asymmetrical dimethylarginine, von Willebrand factor, endothelial microparticles and endothelial progenitor cells) can be used to evaluate endothelial dysfunction. We have focused on the relationship between endothelial dysfunction and inflammatory markers of vascular disease in this review.

Full text
Abstract:
The following MA thesis insists on the point that an indespensable characteristic feature of casual poems consists in the fact that body in early modern literature can be identified as theoretical-model entities, as catalysts and the object of a repre- sentation discourse. The question of the functional way and the rhetorically created images of body constitutes the centre of attention. That means, the form of calculation of this literary text kind, the rhetorical ,plan ' and the social-historical und anthropological draughts ,representation' and ,body ' are keywords for the inter- pretation. Because a usable representation-concept for these interpretations of early modern literature is not introduced up to now, it is not least about the methodically adequate installation of this approach for the scientific work in history of literature by an interdisciplinary linking of this research with aspects of art history, aesthetics, general history as well as politics, philosophy and theology. Four funeral-, grave- and consolation-poems of Johann von Besser constitute the textbase for this survey. Idea history (M.Foucault), semiotics, social history, historical anthropology, body-theory and other methodical concepts are the theoratical background for the analysis and associates ‘representation’ and ‘body’ as well as body and literary text. On this base other areas of the discourse are selected, the relation between representation and ceremonial for example or the ‚liberation from bodies' as a result of the social-restrictive communication (affect debate) or the meaning; better to say the impor- tance of the perceiving look and the concious glance in the sense of a reflection of the perceived things and a double representation in the result. The aim of this thesis manages the supply of contents extracted from the analysis of the representation discourse of human bodies. These contents present themselves as unities in terms of the most internal law of representation-discursive orders (Foucault) and form separable subjects for further research.

Cassella, Dean Marcel. "Culture and Self-Representation in the Este Court: Ercole Strozzi's Funeral Elegy of Eleonora of Aragon, a Text, Translation, and Commentary." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2010. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc33223/.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation presents a previously unedited text by one of the most distinguished- yet neglected-Latin writers of the Italian Renaissance, Ercole Strozzi (1471-1508), a poet and administrator in the court of Ferrara. Under the Este Dukes, Ferrara became a major center of literary and artistic patronage. The Latin literary output of the court, however, has received insufficient scholarly scrutiny. The text is a verse funeral elegy of Eleonora of Aragon (1450-1493), the first Duchess of Ferrara. Eleonora was a remarkable woman whose talents and indefatigable efforts on behalf of her husband, her children, and her state, won her accolades both at home and abroad. She also served as a prototype for the remarkable careers of her two daughters, Isabella d'Este, and Beatrice d'Este, who are celebrated for their erudition and patronage of arts and letters. The text is a mirror of the Estense court and reveals to us how its members no doubt saw themselves, at the very peak of its temporal power and the height of its prestige as a center of cultural creativity. It is also important for the striking portrait it presents of Eleonora. Ercole Strozzi chose to call his poem an epicedium, an ancient minor literary genre that had received attention in the two decades prior to its composition, due to the discovery and printing of the silver age Roman poet Statius, whose text includes several epicedia. Strozzi deftly adapts and transcends both his ancient and contemporary models (especially Poliziano), and in the process, creates a new Latin literary genre, the Renaissance epicedium. It is a fine poem, full of both erudition and creativity, and as such is the first fruits of what would be Ercole Strozzi's illustrious poetic career. The work is genuinely worthy of study on both esthetic and historical grounds.
