Abstract:
Epidermoid cysts are benign lesions most commonly found in the skin but which can arise in many other locations including, very rarely the salivary glands. This rarity often leaves them off standard differential lists and can create a diagnostic dilemma. A patient with an incidentally detected parotid mass on MRI underwent core biopsy, which was unfortunately complicated by formation of a pseudoaneurysm and persistent arterial bleeding requiring coil embolisation. The histology showed only keratinous material and, in retrospect, the signal characteristics of the mass were entirely typical of a

Background: Unilateral peripheral facial nerve palsy may have a detectable cause (secondary facial nerve palsy) or may be idiopathic (Bell’s palsy). Facial palsy is attributable to various causes ranging from mild infection to severe neurological disorders. We investigated the prevalence and types of serious neurological disorders in patients with unilateral facial palsy. Methods: We reviewed the medical records of patients with unilateral facial nerve palsy and identified patients diagnosed with facial palsy secondary to serious or life-threatening causes. We investigated the clinical characte

The causes of cystic parotid lesions may be congenital or acquired and may cause bilateral or unilateral cysts. Bilateral cystic lesions include Warthin's tumor, benign lymphepithelial lesions of human immunodeficiency virus, Sjorgrin's syndrome, and sialocele. Unilateral cystic lesions include Warthin's tumor, sialocele, first-branchial cleft cyst, parotid lymphoepithelial cyst, parotid lymphangioma, necrotic and infected lymph node. Abstract:
This chapter addresses head and neck surgery. It begins with thyroglossal cyst, sinus, and fistula. A thyroglossal cyst is a fluid-filled sac resulting from incomplete closure of the thyroglossal duct. Meanwhile, a thyroglossal sinus results from persistence of the whole duct. The chapter then turns to branchial cyst, sinus, and fistula, before discussing salivary calculi, acute parotitis, and salivary gland tumours. Parotitis is inflammation of the parotid gland; most patients develop this condition as an acute episode of a chronic obstructive sialadenitis. The chapter also considers head and
