One of the most important types of archaeological sources is epigraphy, which has become a separate auxiliary historical discipline. Inscriptions are quite objective and, most importantly, contemporary informational material, so the use of epigraphic data in any study can be justified both by the need to confirm the historicity of an event or a specific person, and by extracting the necessary information from the text of the inscription itself. For young researchers, working with such material can be difficult. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to try to clarify the directions and poss

Epigraphic monuments in Arabic are important sources on the history of Islam in Dagestan, which makes the work of identifying, studying and translating inscriptions relevant. The study of the place and role of Qur’anic texts in the structure of the epigraphic monuments of Dagestan is based on the new finds of Arabic inscriptions in Akhty, one of the richest epigraphic districts of Da-gestan. The epigraphy of this highland district was studied by the author over the period of many years of field research aimed at a complete study of the inscriptions of this district. Instead, it has been incorporated into a broader discourse of the geographical-historical spread and enculturation of Christianity into the Central Asian landmass.
