This study is focused on the remains of Islamic tombstones (nišani) which are currently located in the front yard of the Pirot Museum of Ponišavlje. Among other exhibits, the museum has 14 of these tombstones, or their remaining parts, with accompanying labels on display. They date back to the period of the Turkish rein, which lasted since 1385/86 to 1877, with short periods of break. In this study, the images of these tombstones have been provided, followed by their Arabic and Latin transcripts and appropriate translation into Serbian. Temporal and spatial data has also been collected to aid in understanding the enigmatic glyph. Abstract:
The concept of borders, examined from the point of view of the epigraphs, reveals how the use of inscriptions was a well-established strategic device among the elites: in particular, the knowledge of the value and efficacy of the writing displayed (as the cases of Venice and Croatia demonstrate), especially when considered within horizontal and vertical borders, indicates great attention to the epigraphic forms and formalisms employed. Such knowledge of epigraphic practice thus contributes to the construction of a lasting and widespread epigraphic landscape.

Epigraphic production is a means of representing power. The most powerful classes of Visigothic society used epigraphs as a tool to disseminate their ideas. The church used epigraphs as a means to make known its liturgy, doctrine, buildings, and hierarchies. In addition, the civil hierarchy (monarchy and nobility) used them to demonstrate their privileged social position. Epigraphs employed technical communicative strategies to transform them into an effective means to disseminate ideas.

The earliest epigraphic texts (sixth to second centuries bce) are in Greek, Iberian, Etruscan, and, later, Latin, and are relatively restricted in terms of spread, numbers, and functions. They nevertheless draw in some local communities and create the context for the adoption of the epichoric epigraphies.
