In this paper I argue for the necessity of recognizing the epistemological basis of language (and hence of linguistic theory) for research in and theories of second language acquisition. In particular, I review the arguments for a generative approach to linguistic theory (e.g. Chomsky, 1965, 1975, 1981) and for why language as a system of knowledge must be distinct from other sorts of know ledge (Fodor, 1983), with the purpose of clarifying many misconceptions that seem to have arisen with respect to the work in generative grammar over the last 20 years. In this article, Ramy Youssef compares historically varying structures and semantics of world political status competition. Early modern and modern rankings that represent the world political status of royal titles, or modern states, respectively, serve as empirical material. It is shown that status competition in the early modern period can neither semantically nor structurally be distinguished from conflicts, whereas in modern world politics competition is framed as a distinct social relationship and as an alternative to conflicts. Methodological and epistemological conclusions are drawn from the findings, suggesting that more caution should be taken when applying modern terms to historical contexts.

Abstract This chapter traces melancholia from the early nineteenth century, when its nosological status as an independent disease category was contested, up until the 1860s. At this time, the view that insanity could be chiefly of the emotional kind, that is, largely without delusion of thought, was rapidly gaining ground among European medical writers. This shift from more traditional views of madness was crucial as it provided the epistemological foundation and conceptual framework necessary for disordered mood to become a possible and plausible medical concept. The chapter charts the nosological trajectory of melancholia through the work mid-century British physicians, who began to appropriate physiological language to speak about disordered mood and melancholia, increasingly abandoning older models.
