Abstract:
In the panorama ofNew Testament soteriology, it is shown that the epistle of Hebrews stands ' out as unique. This distinctiveness, while unique, it is complementary not fundamentally different. . The writer of Hebrews is seen as an individual who, even though he was educated by Hellenistic standards, hence his excellent Greek, was very much steeped in the Jewish, Old Testament Levitical and sacrificial tradition. Because his audience is also seen to be, largely, Jewish it explains why Hebrews is the most Levitical-steeped document in the New Testament. The author waS writing to an audience tha

Full text
Abstract:
The subject of “glory”, used to translate the Greek term δόξα, has been relatively neglected in Pauline scholarship. Due to the wide semantic range of δόξα, the few studies on glory in Paul’s epistles have focused on certain aspects of it, such as its association with honour, effulgence or immortality. Although the association of glory with power has been noted by classical and biblical scholars, it has not been explored in detail within the Pauline corpus, particularly Romans where the connection is immediately evident in Romans 1:18-21 and 6:4. This study attempts to address this lacuna by e

The objectives are to understand the intent of the author, the persuasive power of the text upon the original audience, and how the author has transmitted his intent through the text. Abstract:
The present thesis aims to determine the genre, the compositional structure and the hermeneutics found in the letter of James. It is divided into five parts. Part one first examines the various proposals for the genre of James. James is found to be a "counter cultural" wisdom instruction challenging the hearers' worldview and to reorient them to the values acceptable to God. Part two examines the previous attempts to uncover the structure of James. Here I adopt discourse analysis, paying special attention to the formal features of wisdom instruction. Part three explores the importance of law a

The textual problems of the Pauline epistles have rarely received systematic study since the work of Günther Zuntz in 1953. This thesis is a study of the text of 1 Corinthians using a different methodology, called "thoroughgoing eclecticism. The discussion of the textual problems in 1 Corinthians comprises most of the thesis. In them, effort was made to determine whether a given type of variation is typical of any single manuscript or of manuscripts in general. Th

Abstract:
This dissertation reexamines the assumption that regards the language of a text to be primarily discursive and propositional, signifying the antecedents to its real world, whether real or hypothetical. It will be argued that such an assumption reduces the meaning of the text to the nexus of its historical relationships. A methodological reconsideration sets out to reconceive the text of I John as a function of language, i.e., a communicative event encapsulating a series of speech acts which constitute the subjectivity of both writer and reader/hearer and which make truth claims about the world

The nature of trials, tests, and temptation in the Epistle of James has been extensively debated in New Testament scholarship. However, scholarship has underexamined the tension between the author’s mitigation of divine agency in testing ( Jas 1:13–14) and the author’s appeal to well-known biblical testing narratives such as the creation account (1:15– 18), the Binding of Isaac ( Jas 2:21–24), and the Trials of Job ( Jas 5:9–11). is juxtaposition between the author’s theological apologetic and his biblical hermeneutic has the potential to reveal either the author’s theological incoherence or

This thesis seeks to conduct an exegetical and theological investigation of the notion of submission in the Epistle to the Philippians, in order to evaluate whether or not the normative understanding of submission as oppressive or coercive can be sustained in Philippians. Our investigation begins with exegesis of Philippians 2:6-11 and 3:2-11. In Chapters One and Two, we interact with the dominant interpretations of each passage and propose our own interpretation of each passage and suggest a theory of integration between Philippians 2 and 3. The term "personal speech-ethics" sounds foreign to contemporary man. Not only is the term unfamiliar, but the concern which it describes is far removed from what people today associate with their endeavor to be ethical. Time and again during my course of study, upon announcing the title of my thesis I have been met with looks of bewilderment from academics and non-academics alike. I doubt this would have happened in the ancient Mediterranean world. People in that time understood that morality in speaking is intrinsic to the fabric of society, essential for friendship, vital for learning, and,

Abstract:
This thesis is about the application of modern literary criticism to the epistle of Jude. One of the major questions it asks is "What happens to a text (Jude) when a reader reads it using one of these literary theories?" Or to put it a different way, "What does this way of reading emphasise which may have been neglected, ignored, or treated as irrelevant by other forms of reading?" The answers to these questions have been constructed around three loci: the reader, the text, and the author. Within the chapters constructed around those foci, the issues of power and desire, knowledge and language

Whereas commentators frequently restrict the categories for purity language in James to either ritual or metaphorical (and uniformly conclude the language is a metaphor for personal morality) this is overly restrictive and ignores how purity language was used in the first-century. Such descriptions are not only unjustifiably restrictive, but they also fail to account for the function or meaning of the purity language within the rhetorical goals of the compos

This dissertation presents a reconstruction of the canonical formation of the New Testament Catholic Epistle collection.  Following on similar studies of the origin of 2 Peter, it presents a new hypothesis regarding the provenance of the letter of James: the letter was written in the second century in the hopes that it might forge together a literarily coherent and theologically robust non-Pauline letter collection, a “Jerusalem Pillars” collection to balance the “Pauline”.  This hypothesis, which originated out of assumptions derived from the final shape and contents of the collection itself,
