Abstract:
This article investigates the interaction between resumption and movement. Lebanese Arabic distinguishes between true resumption, where a pronoun or an epithet phrase is related to an Ā -antecedent via Bind, and apparent resumption, where the pronoun or the epithet phrase is related to its Ā -antecedent via Move. Only apparent resumption displays reconstruction effects for scope and binding. As resumptives, strong pronouns and epithet phrases cannot be related to a quantificational antecedent unless they occur inside islands. We account for this Obviation Requirement as follows: (a) (true) res

We manipulated the risk of fish predation and cannibalism in semi-field and laboratory experiments with larvae of the dragonfly Epitheca cynosura. Results of a 22-week semi-field experiment showed that larvae from different densities were indistinguishable in mean size by the end of the experiment, but that individuals from low densities were larger until week 12. Larvae from low densities varied less in size than did those from high densities. Larvae showed rapid convergence of densities in the absence of fish. Fish predation also generated rapid convergence of densities. The presence of fish

In this paper I want to reconstruct the genealogy of relating Islam to fascism and fascism to Islam by assembling evidence from Western discourses. Such a reconstruction of course suffers from the fact that it has to draw a picture based solely on a collection of idiographic interpretations. The result is more a mosaic than a coherent narrative. My purpose is not to discuss again the meaning of the current ideological discourse on Islamofascism and the use of Fascism as an epithet for Islamism or even for Islam.1 Nor do I want to examine the fallibility of identifying certain Islamic political

In this article we explore the affectivity of the sexualized epithet ‘whore’ when employed by 150 young social media users in Sweden. By adopting a Deleuze-Guattarian inspired approach to affect we illustrate how ‘whore’ works to restrict and inhibit girls’ affective capacities within the online sexuality assemblage. We further explore targets’ and peers’ resistance to being called whore. We found that targets and peers alike employ aggressive and sexualized language to rebuke and resist the term whore. We argue that these acts of resistance may serve to further support the postfeminist logic

Depth psychology provides a means to view consilience as an expression of anima mundi, a world ‘alive’ with consciousness, in which humanity takes part. Mythopoïesis becomes an active mode of cognition via the imaginative interaction with the cosmos. The Greek god Hephaistos, crippled god of technology and making, is the paradigmatic possessor not only of consummate technical skill (techne), but also of cunning intelligence and flexible opportunism (metis). Logic places these qualities at opposing ends of a cognitive and behavioral spectrum, but the unique combination of techne with metis, see

Active decoding of innersemantic elements of NST revealed stylistic devices based on the interaction of 1) the vocabulary and contextual meanings (metaphor, metonymy, irony), 2) primary and derivative meanings (zeugma, pun), 3) the logical and emotional meanings (epithet, oxymoron), 4) logical and nom

The history of Salon Music can be traced through the tense, dynamic relation between the consumers of that kind of music (performers, listeners) and critics. In the early 1930s, and later even more, a designation ?salon style? started to appear in the reviews of the Salon Music. By that fact alone, it was implied that compositions, which were published as Salon Music, or were defined as such in reviews, corresponded to specific musical norms, which, on the other hand, evolved merely from recipient?s needs. Abstract:
This chapter attempts to expand our knowledge of Aristotle’s Homeric Problems through an examination in context of a select number of references to Homer in Aristotle’s Rhetoric. The first half of the chapter deals with Homeric problems involving emotions (namely lamentation, anger, and indignation). Odysseus’ interaction with the Cyclops Polyphemus receives special attention. The second half deals with literary style, specifically problems concerning epithets, asyndeton and repetition, and metaphors. It is argued that references to Homer in Aristotle’s Rhetoric likely provide additional evidence about the content of the Homeric Problems. Or at the very least, they give us a better idea of how Aristotle would have approached some of the debates engaged in by Homeric scholars in antiquity.

Abstract:
The effective implementation of European Union environmental policy depends upon the efficient cooperation and coordination of various administrative levels and actors. Key to this are the sharing of environmentally relevant information, mutual support, and common agreement aimed at the ‘high level of protection’ of the environment sought by the Union. The transboundary nature of environmental issues, whether through emissions, transterritorial waste transport, or management of shared water resources, or of climate and nature resources, and administrative action related to such matters, pose particular challenges. Were there insufficient collaborative interaction of all the relevant actors in the field of EU environmental protection, and were this field to be characterized primarily by Member States’ acting on their own, the fate of environmental protection in Europe would be bleak. The generation, management, and sharing of information play here a vital, perhaps even dominant, role. The concept of a highly (inter-)networked, indeed integrated, European administration can thus be illustrated very strikingly through a consideration of this policy sector. Indeed, a great deal of EU environmental administration, while not alone within the general setting of Union administration, appears characterizable only through the epithet ‘integrated’.
